After sealing the three-match T20I Series (2-1) against Sri Lanka at home, West Indies will now shift their attention to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League.

Overview

West Indies vs Sri Lanka, 1st ODI
Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, West Indies
10 March 2021; 09:30 am local

The road to qualify for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup is not an easy one for West Indies. They are languishing at the bottom of the Super League table, still waiting to open their account. They have three losses in three games, having suffered an emphatic defeat against Bangladesh in January this year.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka will be looking forward to playing their first match in the Super League.

The T20Is were a closely contested affair with the hosts winning the final match by a narrow margin to take the series 2-1. With the momentum in their favour, coupled with the home advantage, they seem to be in the driver’s seat for now.

They can take inspiration from their captain Kieron Pollard, who is in a blazing form with the bat after hitting Akila Dananjaya for six sixes in the first match.

Remember the Last Time:

The last time West Indies and Sri Lanka went up against each other in ODIs was in February 2020 with the Lankans handing West Indies a 3-0 defeated. The Windies came close to winning twice in that series but lost the first game by just one wicket (and five balls to spare) and last one by a mere six runs.

The memories will still be fresh from that tour and West Indies would be looking to make amends. Another troublesome fact for the hosts is their recent ODI record. They have lost their last six ODIs, their last win in the format coming in January 2020 against Ireland.

What they said:

Kieron Pollard, West Indies captain: "As a team we need to start winning cricket matches, win series. Because we can go down the line of saying 'we need to blood this talent, blood this talent', but some of you same guys will start talking about the results as well."

Neither side should assume they'll simply breeze through the WC Qualifiers, which was very competitive back in 2018.

They must aim for automatic qualification, and both badly need points on the board so this isn't a meaningless bilateral ODI series.

Where is Kusal Mendis and Kusal perera. These Sri Lankans are always chopping and changing. I can only recognize Chandimal and Mathews among the batters.

SL are just terrible in ODIs nowadays. No expectations from them whatsoever. Windies should win this series easily imo.

SL have surprisingly made a good start here..51/0 in 9 overs.

No penetration from this WI seam attack. Definitely need Roach and Thomas here.

After Romario Shepherd fluffed two return catches, the skipper takes a superb one.

Nissanka at the crease on ODI debut.

This youngster Pathum Nissanka has an insane FC record.

Now he is playing all formats. Opening in T20Is and in at #3 in ODIs.

:ma :bobs

Pollard has broken the partnership. Let's see what's the fuss about Nissanka..

Nissanka's lack of offside game was exposed in T20 series, but yeah I can see Mickey trying to make Nissanka in the Babar mould.

What a bizarre passage of play.

SL lose three wickets from nowhere, including that controversial obstructing the field call.

WI still playing the likes of Jason Mohammad who is not much of a LO player with a SR of 64 and average of 22 after 30+ games.

Oh my, another run out.

SL have crumbled since obstructing the field call.

SL playing Bandara who averages just 25 with a SR of 80 who is a batsman.

Some pretty low standard selections on both sides.

Geez another close call.

WI might get the remaining six wickets through runouts :)))

Pretty poor cricket from Srl after a very good start.

SL 232 (49) CRR: 4.73 - innings break

Quite a role reversal here. Shai Hope is batting like Evin Lewis, and Evin Lewis is batting like Shai Hope !

Very good opening stand for WI, SL's heads have dropped.

West Indies off to a good start.

73/0 (15)
Hope 43*
Lewis 29*

WI need 160 runs from 35 overs at a required rate of 4.57.

Both openers have reached 50 now.

West Indies 127/0 (25)
Hope 66*
Lewis 58*

WI need 106 runs from 25 overs at a required rate of 4.24.

The chase should be a doddle from here, unless something bizarre happens.

Shai Hopes consistency in ODIs is ridiculous. West Indies should back him in tests and give him a long run at 4 . They don’t have many other options.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Shai Hope scored a match-winning century and shared a record opening stand with Evin Lewis as West Indies easily beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the first CG Insurance One-Day International at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Wednesday.
Hope made 110 from 133 balls with 12 fours and a six as West Indies reached 236-2 off 47 overs in reply to Sri Lanka’s 232 off 49 overs. He added 143 with Lewis, who made 65 with four fours and two sixes – the second a mammoth hit which landed on the roof of the stand at the Sir Curtly Ambrose End.

The partnership was the highest opening stand for West Indies against Sri Lanka – surpassing the previous best of 133 by Sir Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes at Adelaide Oval in 1985. The previous highest in the Caribbean was 115 by Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles at Sabina Park in 2013.

In the last four ODIs, Hope’s scores against Sri Lanka are 115, 51, 72 and 110. This was his 10th hundred -- the most by a West Indian wicket-keeper. He joined the list of West Indians to reach this milestone: Chris Gayle (25), Brian Lara (19), Haynes (17), Sir Gordon (11), Sir Viv Richards (11), Shiv Chanderpaul (11) and Marlon Samuels (10).

Hope was named CG Insurance Man-of-the-Match.

"I just had patience and trusted my ability. I made sure I negated the threat that they threw at us. (Wanindu) Hasaranga was the main threat and I think we played him very well. He didn't get any wickets. It feels great to hit a century. Being away from the game for so long when playing is all you know - it's just great to be back,” he said.

After Lewis fell, Darren Bravo joined Hope and the pair added 73 for the second wicket, before Hope was bowled with the score at 215-2 and victory in sight. Bravo made 37 not out and Jason Mohammed 13 not out to see the home side to victory with three overs to spare.
Earlier, West Indies bowlers were very disciplined and took the last nine Sri Lankan wickets for 127 runs. Openers Danushka Gunathilaka (55) and Dimuth Karunaratne (52) shared a century opening stand while debutant Ashen Bandara hit 50. Off-spinner Mohammed (2-12) and fast bowler Jason Holder (2-39) were the leading wicket-takers.

Sunday, March 14: 3rd CG Insurance One-Day International at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. First ball is 9:30am (8:30am Jamaica Time)
