What's new

West Indies [318 & 200/6] beat England [204 & 313] by 4 wickets in the first Test at Southampton

Little bit of heatwave and Anderson cant buy a wicket. It sums up his career perfectly how ineffective he is without clouds.

Anyway....hoping for a West Indies win.

He has been unlucky this innings , and reversing the ball this test

I am impressed most with Dorwich actually - kept well, took 6 catches, made a crucial 61 in first innings and now doing a great job. Much better player than his stats - 3 hundreds in 30 Tests actually tells about the capability.

Will be interesting to see the changes England will make for the second test that being said its been a good test match hoping Blackwood can get his century he has looked good out their

Dowrich looking awful against the short ball but doing well to hang in there. Too little too late for England

With or without clouds, when was the last time Anderson won a match for his team based on his 4th innings performance?

His 4th innings average is 25 or something so he's not bad by any means but your question is flawed to begin with. Most fast bowlers will not have great match winning spells for the 4th innings because if the match is getting that far; the pitch has broken up and you are going to rely on and back your spinners.

So it is a flawed question.

England really layed into archer before getting him out. Nevermind it’s a no ball

dont think even West Indies can blow it from here

No harm done, gets him again. Repeat of Gabriel vs Sibley. Dowrich didn't look comfortable. Hopefully Holder can see them home. Blackwood needs to keep his head screwed on here.

oh damn.. my stream is a few minutes behind haha

Usually he struggles against any half decent bowling. But I think , collectively, Windies have shown a lot of patience in this teer match. Brathwaite, Chase, Dowrich have all been impressive.

One more wicket and it's cats among pigeons. Don't know if Campbell will come out to bat too.

This is where a crowd would have made a HUGE difference

Englsih crowd really gets behind their team and it become sort of a cauldron. And the Windies players are not used to that so would have been nervous wrecks

Has Stokes ever won a Test match with the ball.

I remember several great batting performances but eventhough his bowling record is good I dont remember any great great performance

Against India at Edgbaston in 2018.

2nd test vs South Africa earlier in the year, took the last 3 wickets with 10-12 overs left in the game when South Africa were trying to hold on for a draw. But yeah don't recall him ever completely running through a line up.

West Indies are almost home.

This is embarrassing for England because West Indies are ranked 8th.

Surely even the Windies can't lose it from here.

This is some innings from Blackwood.

Pakistan should crush this England side 2-1.

I think this England side will lose against Afghanistan on a dust bowl pitch.

27 more needed. Well done, WI.

Imagine Pakistan being in this situation they would have been the same isnt it lol

Not a betting man for obvious reasons, but Pakistan, West Indies and Sri Lanka are the 3 teams I'd hesitate to bet on to win from this position

Once Archer finishes this spell, WIN must go on attack. They can’t target these 27 runs in 20 overs.

Not WIN - sounds crazy these days but not in Test. They actually are extremely efficient side chasing low targets on tricky wickets.

Horrifying flashbacks of Azhar Ali attempting to get 6 runs against New Zealand through singles.

I wrote exactly from that memory - for me it was like a nightmare at 4:30 AM here in Toronto winter.

pakistan wouldnt have made it an easy chase even if we have 100 to chase

i legit dont remember us not making a meal of a 4th innings chase

Haha yeah even 100 wouldn't have been any easy for them or shall we say they don't do themselves any favours.

England can do one thing. They can start bowling negative line. It is not nice but it is legal.

We lost 3 early wickets chasing 40 against South Africa once before Younis and Misbah saw us home :))

Crowd makes a big difference. We have seen that in the premier league with the weak teams getting squashed with greater frequency.

England would probably have won with crowd support.

England almost lost against Ireland too. Ireland chased a similar target but they couldn't succeed like West Indies.

You always have excuses for India and England. No matter how well the opposition play you still have an excuse for England and India.

I bet you came up with this excuse after thinking for 4 days

Feel Stuart Broad would have won England the match IMO.

Anderson struggling for a wicket when there is no movement.

Crowds or lack thereof aren’t an excuse. West Indies have outplayed England throughout the match. Out of all the five days, England were only seriously competing in the game for (most of) yesterday, until the sunset collapse sealed their fate.

People can blame the exclusion of Broad, but the ultimate difference was the absence of Root.

He would have scored at least one half-century in this Test and that would have been enough to win the game.

Denly will never be good enough.

I think, Poms need to rethink their Test squad. If WIN wins this Test, which is most likely, one main reason is lack of a penetrative spinner for fourth innings. Don’t think Blackwood would have resisted had a spinner flighting it above eye line on a bit uneven wicket.

Root is a miss but England lost the game because they weren't good enough not because of no crowd.
