What's new

West Indies [427 & 322/5] beat England [258 & 490/8d] by five wickets at Leeds, equalise series 1-1

Incredible hundred! maiden hundred for hope well done! quiet the prospect, needs to stay there now! don't lose focus :lara

Chief Destroyer What lead do you reckon would be ideal at the very least ?

And another. Well done Shai Hope. The pull shot he played to get to 99 was top drawer.

He was unlucky not to score a century against Pakistan, but he doesn't make that mistake here. Well deserved.

Given their current position, Windies should be disappointed if they end up with a lead of less than 150.

Could not be happier with any good cricket news coming from WI, my most favorite team after Pakistan, due to their history. Will never give up on hope of revival of past cricketing glory, or something close to it.

My only fear is WI team will not be able to stay competitive through the test and will have spectacular collapse at some point, hope not.

Would be a major embarrassment for England if they lose this Test. Especially after all the criticism that was dished out by ex English players towards this Windies side.

England are as inconsistent as Pakistan in test match cricket, despite all the big claims from their media.

They have a history of losing these kind of matches.

Bandwagoners are welcome, true Windies fans support the team even when the likes of Daren Ganga and Devon Smith are stinking out the joint :))

West Indies do seem to raise their game against England (2015 series, WT20 final).

:)) Markhor the biggest bandwagoner, you left me alone in all them threads when WI's were getting annihilated :mv. Anyhow a lot of work to do, they're not in a dominant position just yet !

Oh please, I was virtually the only one posting in the match threads for West Indies vs England ODI series earlier this year !

Anyway its not surprising Windies are raising their game in Leeds. All that rubbish piled on the streets no wonder the Windies were looking to get out of Birmingham as fast as possible !

Right, second new ball taken. This is an important period of play now.

ODI bandwagonner :)) they're a decent side in the limited forms :mv

Well, I say WI got lucky that England played some loose shots. If they had played better they would be 309-3..
only explicitly loose shot was mooen, reminder England hardly have a top order and Gabriel and roach are good bowlers

The West Indies get too much uncalled for slack. Their main problem is that they don't play enough Test cricket against the big cricketing nations anymore and this is why they've suffered. Their wins against Pakistan, the drawn Test vs India, 2015 series vs England and this very Test have been clear indications of their potential and prowess.

I was there too!

Shai Hope has played two beautiful straight drives over the last two overs to both Anderson and Broad. What a talent, and only 23! He's definitely one for the future. I knew it as soon as I saw his 90 odd against Pakistan but this innings has been nothing short of spectacular. Technique personified!

The sane move would be for the skipper to come in next. He clearly has a lot of talent with the bat which is often wasted in the lower order batting with the tail-enders. West Indies are in a comfortable position and if a wicket is too fall, Holder should be the next man in. I hope we get to see something out of the box.

Woakes's pace is down since his injury, been averaging 80mph today.

Exactly.

Wi is an exciting young team on the rise!

Was thinking the same thing.

Or maybe Blackwood. He is in good form and plays at a fast strike rate too.

Absolutely. In fact, he was one of the better performers for West Indies in the previous match and is clearly in good form. However, as of now, instead of looking to play quick, I think WI need more of a bigger lead and skipper Holder is perfect for that role.

Part of the problem is FC cricket - there aren't a lot of teams so there aren't many matches in a season so don't get to hone the skills needed for Test cricket.

Kyle Hope is 28 yet has only played 35 FC matches ! Toby Roland-Jones is only one year older but has already played 94 FC matches. It was a problem back in the day too but those guys were able to play County cricket. That option isn't available to these players nowadays.

Another issue is the PATHETIC pitches in the Caribbean. Look at what these guys can do on PROPER surfaces not the slow, low, technique-destroying surfaces back home that don't enable fluent strokeplay where any mediocre spinner looks like the next Murali or Warne.

To add to what Markhor says, the Windies also play much less domestic games (they've struggled to pay domestic salaries), a problem which they've only started rectifying a couple years ago.

Brathwaite departs after playing of the best innings you'll ever see from a team struggling so much! Took his team from 30 odd for 3 to 281 - 3. Brilliant.

And out comes of the most talented batsmen in the WI, Roston Chase!

Wow WI even with their B team is on the verge of assailing a sizeable lead all that with only 3 top order batsmen dismissed

England have come back from conceding a 1st innings deficit of 100+ before - notably Edgbaston last year vs Pakistan.

Windies should aim for around 420. We all know what Chase is capable of, Blackwood can score quickly, Dowrich is a talented young bat and Holder is no mug either.

Been too many times in the past where Windies have found themselves in a favourable position but lacked the ruthlessness and knowhow to capitalise - that's the problem when you don't have experience of winning many Test matches.

Hope must stay until at least the first hour tomorrow morning.

A lovely day's cricket.

West Indies 329-5 at Stumps with a lead of 71.

WI has a better tail than most other teams - still Dorwich & Holder to come. Also, effectively this is 4 down because of the NWM, a concept I don't like. Bishu had zero chance to survive morning spell & that's a total wastage of wicket; for 9, against a tired attack, he could have added few good runs.

I think, WI is in a much better position at this point. A lead of 170 & they'll put lots of pressure to Pom top order tmro.

England not out of it, but I'd much rather be the West Indies at this point. Fantastic day for them and a pleasure to witness their dominant performance.

A frustrating day for England. Sun shining, pitch slowing down, too many bad balls, and the two Windies lads did better that I though they were capable of.

reckon solid barbadian backbone, Jamaican lower middle order flair is the future of windies cricket

Well ..... England's stock has come down a little !!!!! WI can win this match, but they have to field a lot better than the 1st Innings !!!!! Lot depends on what happens today .... of course. Go WIs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well obvious, you're always wrong about everything :yk

Thank you for your comment oh wise one. I can only hope to approach a fraction of your vast sum of knowledge one day.

After 2000, WI have had good sessions in England but not been able to keep the pressure up for a whole match. They have won four of the six sessions so far in this one. Let's see if they can win a few more.

Oops, sorry; didn't meant to rustle your jimmies :mv

lol what the heck. Windies lost two on first two balls of the day.

Beautiful cover drive from Holder. Keep going, don't throw it away.

Holder has evolved into batting all rounder over the course of his career- should be batting higher.

Handy lead this, WI's have done superbly in this inning; this morning they lost 2 in 2 but recovered very well

West Indies end up with a healthy lead of 169.

Pitch looks dry so could be a bit of turn for Bishoo but still looks good for batting.

West Indies need to do a better job of holding onto their catches and maintain the same discipline with the ball as in the 1st inns. Don't waste this opportunity !

Bump.

Windies actually had the chance to bat England completely out of the game, but that will come with time. A great effort.

Good to see the progress of this test. Hope they sustain the pressure and not give England any chance to come back.
