Pre-arrest bail pleas: Absence of Omar Ayub, Asad Umar irks court

The anti-terrorism court on Wednesday expressed displeasure over the absence of PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub and former federal minister Asad Omar in the hearing of their interim pre-arrest bail petitions in cases of May 9 riots.

Judge Khalid Arshad heard the bail petitions of PTI’s current and former leaders including Omar Ayub, Asad Omar, Fawad Chaudhry, Azam Swati, Musarrat Jamshed, Hafiz Farhat Abbas and others.

All except Omar and Asad appeared before the court.

During the hearing, the investigating officer sought more time to present the case record, stating that written statements from Omar Ayub, Hafiz Farhat and others had not been collected yet due to duties related to Ashura last week.

The judge observed that a decision would be made on all bail petitions on the next hearing.

He said the court would cancel the bail for those suspects who had not recorded their statements to the police.

At this point, Omar Ayub’s lawyer expressed dissatisfaction over the judge, saying he would present arguments if the petitions were heard fairly.

He asked the judge to transfer the pleas, stating that respecting the court did not mean tolerating injustice.

Judge Arshad responded by saying that with Allah’s grace, “a decision would be made on the bail pleas of PTI leaders today.”

He remarked that the suspects were exploiting the situation and urged their lawyers to present their arguments, otherwise, a decision would be announced on merit.

The judge said the police had given him a USB with the videos of the occurrences, which he had watched, and noted that all the suspects had made speeches like leaders.

The lawyers for the suspects requested for more time to present their arguments.

The judge said the issue had been pending for a year and a half and ample opportunity had already been provided for the arguments. He urged all the lawyers to complete their arguments.

However, the judge adjourned the hearing till Aug 2, giving the lawyers time to prepare their arguments.

The judge also extended the bail of the suspects till the next hearing.

IHC orders immediate reopening of PTI secretariat

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the immediate reopening of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Secretariat, ARY News reported.

The court also directed the party to install fire safety measures at the Central Secretariat within a week. In its written order, the court declared the CDA’s sealing of the PTI office as null and void.

The IHC ruled that the PTI agreed with CDA to install fire extinguishing equipment, fire pumps on the roof and a separate water tank at the Central Secretariat.

The PTI has also been directed by the IHC to install manual alarm system, gas detectors for kitchen safety, and paste emergency numbers to avert any untoward incident

The IHC also directed the PTI to carry out regular electrical wiring in the building.

PTI MPA indicted in illegal construction case

Judge Dr Mumtaz Hanjra has indicted Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PIT) member of the assembly Sher Afzal Marwat in a case concerning illegal construction at a farmhouse. The judge has summoned the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) director general to present witnesses and evidence on September 26.

Last year, the RDA filed a case against Marwat for illegal constructions and encroachments, which were demolished within the limits of Naseerabad police station.

During the court hearing on Tuesday, Marwat claimed that the case was politically motivated and requested that evidence be sought from the RDA. The court has indicted Marwat, who pleaded not guilty, finding RDA’s charges to be prima facie unsubstantiated.

Marwat asserted that the allegations were false and that the actions were taken based on backdated notices. He maintained that the farmhouse was his private property and that no illegal constructions or encroachments were made.

Speaking to the media afterwards, Marwat reiterated his stance that the RDA had fabricated the case and had no evidence against him. His lawyer, Syed Yasir Hussain Shah Tirmizi, stated the court had taken serious notice of the lack of evidence and summoned the RDA director.

PTI protests as NA committee passes bill to ‘circumvent’ reserved seats ruling

The PTI registered its protest as a National Assembly committee on Wednesday approved a bill proposing amendments to the election law, suggesting that a political party should not be allocated seats reserved for women and non-Muslim candidates if it failed to submit its list for the reserved seats within the prescribed time.

The PML-N had tabled the Election Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the National Assembly on Tuesday. Immediately after the bill was tabled, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar suggested it would be appropriate if the bill was referred to a committee for input from all political parties.

Another amendment proposed to the Elections Act 2017 in the bill said that a candidate should be considered an independent lawmaker if they had not filed a declaration with the returning officer about their affiliation with a particular political party before seeking the allotment of a poll symbol.

Similarly, it also said that an independent candidate shall not be considered a candidate of any political party if, at a later stage, they filed a statement to that effect.

The amendments to sections 66 and 104 also included a declaration that the proposed amendments would take precedence over court orders, including the Supreme Court.

Some political observers are seeing the controversial bill as a move to frustrate the Supreme Court judgement on July 12, which had declared the PTI eligible for reserved seats in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies and also confirmed its status as a parliamentary party.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs met today to discuss the bill and approved it by a vote of eight against four with one abstention from the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the issue of independent members joining any political party and reserved seats was “clear”, adding that the bill cleared up many confusions.

“Parliament is the legislative body. Courts only interpret. Parliament has the power to legislate where it feels its powers are being interfered with or the Constitution is being rewritten. It is the power of Parliament to make constitutions and laws,” the minister said, asserting that there was nothing new in the bill.

Meanwhile, PTI MNA Ali Muhammad Khan remarked that “the bill seems to have come with the will of the law minister.”

He questioned whether the bill, were it to be made an act, would apply retroactively or not to which Tarar said it would. The PTI lawmaker said the bill would be tantamount to pitting Parliament against the Supreme Court.

CDA unseals PTI office

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Wednesday unsealed the PTI office following the orders of Islamabad High Court.

The court had also directed the PTI to adopt fire prevention measures in the building.

PTI agreed to make 10 arrangements with CDA officials.

The IHC ordered that PTI would install a fire extinguisher, separate water tanks, a manual alarm system, a gas detector to protect the kitchen, display emergency numbers, and regular wiring of electricity in the building.

It is pertinent to note that the CDA anti-encroachment team in collaboration with the district administration launched the operation to remove the alleged encroachments and unauthorised constructions at the PTI’s central secretariat.

A portion of the PTI central secretariat was also demolished during the operation. The CDA officials stated that the illegal constructions of PTI offices were demolished.

The clash erupted between PTI workers and police personnel and political workers were booked in the case of attack on police and CDA officials afterwards.

Ten activists of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) including its Secretary Information Raoof Hasan arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency under the “Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca)” were shifted to Adiala jail on Wednesday.

The FIR was registered with the FIA police station Islamabad against the activists, allegedly involved in “anti-state propaganda”.

Besides Raoof Hasan, the PTI media cell members who were shifted to Adiala jail were identified as Afaq Ahmed Alvi, resident of Islamabad, Hameedullah, resident of Islamabad, Rashid Mehmood, resident of Rawalpindi, Zeeshan Farooq, resident of Rawalpindi, Syed Osama Wajid, resident of Rawalpindi, Mohammad Rizwan Afzal, resident of Toba Tek Singh, Mohammad Rafique, resident of Pishin Quetta, Syed Hamza, resident of Islamabad and Liaquat Ali, resident of Islamabad.

Judicial Magistrate Shabbir Bhatti on Tuesday sent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Raoof Hasan and other activists of the party to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

NOC dispute

Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday asked Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the district administration to resolve dispute related to the ‘No Objection Certificate’ for PTI’s public gathering.

IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq hinted at initiating contempt proceedings against the district administration over non-compliance with the court order.

During the course of hearing, PTI’s counsel Shoaib Shaheen argued before the court that the district administration was not complying with the judicial order.

Advocate General Ayaz Shaukat said that the PTI could hold its gathering after Jamat-i-Islami concludes its sit-in. IHC CJ urged both parties to resolve the matter mutually, warning the district administration of a show cause notice.

He advised both the PTI and district administration to deliberate upon the issue and reach a logical conclusion by Thursday (today).

Subsequently, further hearing in this matter adjourned till today.

Last week, IHC Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz asked the district administration to decide the venue for PTI’s public gathering in accordance with the relevant constitutional provisions.

She disposed of the petition of PTI with the observation that the constitution guaranteed freedom of peaceful assembly with reasonable restrictions which could not be taken away on the pretext that a political party poses a threat.

DC denies permission for PTI rally at Minar-i-Pakistan, LHC told

The Lahore High Court was informed on Friday that the deputy commissioner denied permission to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to hold a public rally at Minar-i-Pakistan on Aug 14.

Assistant Advocate General Sattar Sahil submitted a report on behalf of the DC, saying the PTI could not be allowed to hold the rally at Minar-i-Pakistan for security reasons.

He stated that the DC had also denied permission for rallies to the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party and the Pakistan People’s Party.

The law officer asked the court to dismiss the petition filed by PTI’s Lahore chapter Vice President Akmal Khan Bari.

Petitioner’s counsel Sardar Latif Khosa pointed out that the PTI was also denied permission for a rally in Islamabad on the same pretext.

Justice Muzammil Akhtar Shabbir disposed of the petition and observed that the petitioner could separately challenge the DC’s decision before the court.

The petitioner’s lawyer stated that the party was also denied permission for Islamabad rally at the last moment.

The petitioner had contended that his party wanted to hold a rally at Minar-i-Pakistan on Aug 14 and submitted a request for it, but received no response.

The petitioner assured the court that the rally would be peaceful and in accordance with the law.

He argued that holding rallies was the right of every political party, but the PTI was being deprived of this fundamental right.

ADJOURNED: Chief Justice Aalia Neelum adjourned the hearing of a petition of Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari against her viral edited pictures and videos on social media.

The minister asked the court to take action against PTI’s activist Falak Javed Khan.

He said evidence of electoral irregularities had been included in the reference, asserting that the CEC and the members did not fulfill their legal and constitutional duties.

He said the SJC had been asked to remove the CEC and other members from their offices.

The opposition leader criticized Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz, saying the recent spell of monsoon had exposed her performance.

Ali Muhammad Khan indicates PTI may engage in talks with three major political parties

Senior PTI leader and former minister for parliamentary affairs, Ali Muhammad Khan, has indicated that his party might be open to negotiating with the PML-N, PPP, and MQM-P to resolve ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition, provided PTI’s demands are met.

Relations between the PTI and the PML-N-led coalition government — already tense since party founder Imran Khan’s ouster in 2022 — have grown even more strained over time. Recently, the party’s central office was raided by police over an alleged “anti-state-campaign” leading to the arrest of PTI party spokesperson Raoof Hassan.

During the Dawn News TV program ‘Doosra Rukh’ on Saturday, Ali Muhammad Khan was asked whether the PTI would be open to talks with the three major political parties — PPP, PML-N, and MQM-P — to ease political tensions and address issues. In response, he affirmed that negotiations are essential.

“We can sit with our allies, the MWM (Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen) and the Sunni Ittehad Council, all day, but that will not produce any results,” he stated. “You have to engage with those you have issues with, so negotiations are necessary.”

Last week, while speaking to reporters at Adiala jail, incarcerated Imran had laid down three preconditions for potential talks with the government: the return of his party’s “stolen mandate”, the release of all detained party workers, and the holding of transparent elections.

Echoing the party founder’s sentiments, Ali Muhammad stated that the party was prepared to engage in negotiations based on certain conditions.

“We want the cases [against our workers and supporters] withdrawn as they are politically motivated,” he said. “They [the government] should apologize and acknowledge their mistake in filing all those FIRs.”

Ali Muhammad reiterated that his party’s second and most important demand was the return of PTI’s mandate.

“The government and the opposition can agree on taking the matter to the Supreme Court, so they can resolve it,” he said. “The less we negotiate and talk, the worse the situation will become.”

The lawmaker said that the PTI’s last resort would be protesting if negotiations failed.

“Political instability (through protesting) damages the nation. You can see the impact on law and order and the economy. Talking and maintaining ties will keep the country strong against any threats.”

Asked about the PTI founder’s views on negotiations, the former minister said that Imran was not averse to talks with the government.

“I’ve met with Imran Khan frequently since the elections, and one thing that has remained consistent is his openness to talks. However, these discussions need to be meaningful and produce tangible results,” he said.

“Our workers and supporters in jail need to be freed and our mandate has to be returned, as per Form 45.”

The PTI lawmaker, however, clarified that negotiations can only happen between political parties, not between parties and the establishment.

“There is nothing in the Constitution that permits negotiations between political parties and the establishment,” he said. “You can engage with the establishment, but talks are always held between political parties.”

Earlier this week, Imran had said that his party was willing to talk to the military establishment.

Speaking about the party’s political activities in the country and the upcoming steps, Ali Muhammad said that there will be a large-scale rally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday to mark the arrest of the former premier.

“We will have a large, national-level rally on August 5,” he said. “People from all over the country will take part in it.”

PTI marks Imran’s ‘year in prison’ with Swabi jalsa

As its founder Imran Khan completed one year in jail, the PTI and its allies on Monday organised a large power show in Swabi to demand the former prime minister’s release.

The jalsa was held at Shahmansoor Town and PTI leaders and workers from across the country participated in the event, despite the hot weather. The PTI workers were waving party flags and holding Imran Khan’s portraits, demanding the government release their leader immediately.

In their speeches, PTI leaders said they had launched the campaign for the release of Imran Khan and they would organise rallies in different cities, including Islamabad and Lahore.

They asked the party supporters to be ready for upcoming gatherings in Islamabad, Lahore and other cities of Punjab to sustain the pressure on the federal government. According to the PTI leaders, the public gathering in Islamabad will be held in the last week of August or the first week of September.

“If we reduce the pressure, it will mean that we have lost the initiative for which we have given numerous sacrifices,” claimed PTI leader Asad Qaiser.

Barrister Gohar said they have launched the struggle for the release of their leader, who was imprisoned along with his wife Bushra Bibi in “false cases”. He alleged that the federal government used various tactics to tarnish Mr Khan’s image and popularity but the government could not break their momenentum.

The PTI leader said that the judicial system should be independent so that the judiciary could deliver, adding that interference in judicial and political affairs must come to an end.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who heads the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party as well as a PTI-led opposition alliance, said that there was a need to restore the rule of law and constitutional supremacy in the country. He said that Imran Khan was right to say that there was a need for ‘real independence’ and they supported this idea of Mr Khan.

“We strive for the supremacy of parliament in the country…every institution should work in line with its constitutional role, and the people-elected government should deliver according to the wishes and benefits of the masses,” he said, adding that there was no space for “engineered” elections anymore.

Addressing the gathering, Omar Ayub said that he wanted to convey a message to the PTI workers from Imran Khan about the military.

Imran Khan has said that the PML-N was trying to create a gulf between the nation and the Pakistan Army but such an attempt would be foiled by the PTI leadership with complete determination, said Mr Ayub.

He added that the PTI leaders and workers had been picked up by intelligence agencies without any reason and PTI wanted that this practice should be stopped.

In his address, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said Islamabad belonged to all provinces and no one could prevent them from holding a public gathering there. He called for the unconditional release of Imran Khan, saying he did not do anything wrong.

Anwar Iqbal adds from Washington: In a separate protest, held a stone’s throw from the US Capitol, PTI supporters in the US called on Washington to reconsider its current stance towards Islamabad and back their efforts to restore democracy in Pakistan.

Speaking at the protest, former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Suri recalled that when PTI organised nationwide protests on August 5, 2019, against India, then-army chief retired Gen Qamar Bajwa had praised them. “Now we are called traitors simply because we demand our democratic rights,” he noted.

He expressed concern over the imprisonment of Imran Khan, Yasmin Rashid, and other PTI leaders on what he described as fabricated charges. Suri appealed to the US administration and international human rights organisations to demand their release.

Raoof Hasan released from Adiala jail

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary Information Raoof Hasan has been released from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, ARY News reported.

According to the details, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad issued Raoof Hasan’s release order following his bail in a case pertaining to recovery of explosive material.

After being released from Adiala Jail, the PTI leader left for his residence.

Earlier in the day, the ATC granted bail to the PTI leader against surety bonds worth Rs200,000. ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Supra announced the decision and dismissed the plea seeking Raoof Hasan’s physical remand for seven more days.

On July 22, Islamabad Police arrested the PTI leader in the federal capital. The arrest was made at the party secretariat in sector G-8.

He was initially implicated in a case registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca).

Omar Ayub asks institutions to operate within constitutional limits

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub said on Saturday every institution, including the military, should operate within their constitutional limits.

Talking to the media outside an Anti-Terrorism Court here, he said the military, Frontier Corps, and intelligence agencies were institutions of the state while politicians are responsible for politics according to the Constitution.

Mr Ayub also conveyed a message from the incarcerated PTI founder, Imran Khan, who blamed PML-N and PPP for “creating a divide between people and the army”.

Earlier this week, Mr Khan blamed the establishment for “imposing” the two parties on the country “through rigged elections”.

Mr Ayub challenged the authorities to present CCTV footage of the May 9 incident to prove the allegations levelled against the PTI.

He added that the PTI founder would seek the courts’ intervention to release the footage and rejected rumours of a deal with anyone.

In an interview with Reuters earlier this week, the incarcerated PTI leader — who has consistently blamed the military for his ouster from power and subsequent imprisonment — said there would be “no harm” in engaging with the generals if he should be released from jail and seek to return to power.

Imran Khan ‘a reality’

Talking about the current political situation, Mr Ayub stressed that only a strong prime minister can steer the country out of the crisis.

The incumbent government, he said, was “ineffective” and predicted elections by the year’s end.

The incarcerated former foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, also talked to the media inside Kot Lakhpat jail after the hearing of a case in which he is accused of attacking a police station on May 9.

He said political stability cannot be achieved without acknowledging the PTI founder is a political reality. He also called out the authorities for filing cases against him over the past year.

Mr Qureshi talked about the need for consensus among political parties that they should not label each other as traitors.

On the issue of Balochistan, the former minister said the path to peace lies through dialogue.

Mr Qureshi also criticised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for his remarks about the judiciary during the National Assembly session on Friday. He said the way Mr Bhutto-Zardari attacked the judiciary was not befitting of him.

ATC hearing

Earlier, Mr Qureshi, along with Dr Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfraz Cheema and other PTI leaders, appeared before an ATC judge in the case of an attack on Shadman police station.

Mr Qureshi urged the judge, Khalid Arshad, to decide the bail petition of Dr Rashid first as she was a cancer patient.

But Dr Rashid asked the judge to decide on the bail applications of all her companions simultaneously. The hearing was adjourned till Sept 2.

Police, PTI leaders clash in Lahore during Independence Day rallies

Police chase, clashes, arrests and release of PTI workers marked the party’s Independence Day rallies, with PTI Punjab General Secretary Hammad Azhar emerging on the scene after months.

Mr Azhar, who has been mostly in hiding since last year’s May 9 violent protests, briefly emerged in the city before eluding capture by Lahore police.

PTI Punjab parliamentarians, led by Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar staged a rally, with the participants marching from the assembly gate to The Mall and up to GPO Chowk and chanting slogans like “Pakistan Zindabad” and demanding the release of PTI founder Imran Khan and other detained leaders.

Despite police efforts to block the rally, participants managed to reach The Mall. As some workers distributed the national and party flags, the police pounced on the workers, arresting more than a dozen of them and tearing the clothes of two workers.

Mr Bhachar tried to stop police vehicles, but the police sped away with the arrested workers. Later, the opposition leader, along with several PTI MPAs, including Sardar Rashid Tufail, Awais Virk, Ali Imtiaz Warraich, and others, staged a sit-in on The Mall, chanting, Zulm kay zabtay hum nahin maantay (We do not accept the oppression).

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhachar issued a stern warning to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, criticising the heavy police presence and the aggressive treatment of parliamentarians. “We are celebrating Independence Day, yet we are treated like terrorists,” he remarked, adding that PTI leaders and workers remain steadfast in their support for Imran Khan.

Mr Bhachar later told Dawn that all the workers arrested on Independence Day and a day earlier had been released.

Hammad Azhar

Hammad Azhar led a PTI motorcycle rally in Lahore despite being wanted by the police in connection with over 50 FIRs.

The rally, which began at Barkat Market and passed through Firdous Market, M.M. Alam Road, Jail Road, and Ferozepur Road, was dispersed by the police at Kalma Chowk, where around 50 PTI workers were arrested.

Mr Azhar, who was on a bike driven by PTI Punjab Information Secretary Shaukat Basra, narrowly escaped capture, protected by a strong contingent of supporters.

Mr Azhar was also seen chanting slogans alongside a police prison van. He criticised the government’s heavy-handed tactics and reiterated the party’s commitment to securing “real independence” under the leadership of Imran Khan. He accused the current government of imposing unjust taxes and crippling the economy.

Speaking to Dawn, Mr Basra said the police had almost created a curfew-like situation on Lahore’s roads, but PTI leaders and workers were determined to hold the Independence Day rally as announced by Mr Khan. He said the party would also hold a mass public gathering soon. “This TikTok government will collapse when people come out on roads,” he said.

Dozen arrested

Harappa police arrested 11 political workers and booked 70 others on the eve of Independence Day for bringing out a rally for the immediate release of party founder Imran Khan. The rally was led by Muhammad Yaar Damra, a PTI ticket holder from the PP-201 constituency.

Police claimed that more than three dozen political workers and tehsil office-bearers blocked Lakhain Mor and chanted slogans against government and state institutions.

Meanwhile, sources told Dawn that Magistrate Arif Niazi had released all seven PTI workers who were arrested and booked by Farid Town Police on Tuesday night for organising rallies in Sahiwal and Chichawatni cities.

Resignation

Meanwhile, PTI MPA and parliamentary leader in the Punjab Assembly, Hafiz Farhat Abbas, submitted his resignation from his leadership position, stating that his bail applications had been rejected in different cases and he would not be able to lead from the front.

In a letter written to PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub, Mr Abbas said he was honoured to be offered the parliamentary party leadership, but he was now unable to do justice with the position. “Until my legal matters are resolved, I cannot do justice with this office,” he said.

Mr Abbas requested Mr Ayub to accept his resignation from the office of parliamentary leader and added that he would continue serving as an MPA and party worker.

PTI founder speaks up on Islamabad power show, ‘open trial’ demand

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan opened up on postponing the Islamabad power show which was scheduled to take place in Tarnol on August 22, ARY News reported.

In an informal interaction with media inside the Adiala Jail’s courtroom, Imran Khan said he had called a meeting with Azam Swati and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan to postpone the rally, citing concerns of potential violence saying “I was informed about possible violence at the rally day.”

He said that Islamabad power show was postponed to avoid another incident like the one that occurred on May 9.

PTI founder stated that the incumbent government is planning to extend CJP Isa’s tenure and disrupting the seniority protocol for the appointment of the next chief justice.

When asked about his response to the security agencies’ comments on his demand for an open trial of former ISI chief Faiz Hameed, Imran Khan said that as the head of the country’s largest political party, he has the right to demand an open trial.

Our Generals are playing for time but sooner or later these crooks will get their day in court. You can only play God for so long. Ask Zia, Ayub, Bajwa and Mush

PTI postpone rally in Lahore

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rally scheduled for August 27 in Lahore has been postponed due to administrative challenges, ARY News reported on Sunday.

According to PTI Information Secretary Shaukat Mahmood Basra, the local administration is not granting permission for the rally, despite a Lahore High Court (LHC) order.

Basra expressed frustration over the situation, stating that PTI has decided to postpone the rally due to the lack of approval from the authorities.

He further announced plans to file a contempt of court petition against the administration for not complying with the court’s directive.

PTI intends to reschedule the rally and will request permission to hold it after September 8.

Rifts in PTI evident as senior KP office-bearers axed

The signs of infighting within the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter are growing as two senior office-bearers have been sacked with the approval of provincial president of the party and Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

The removal of PTI president for Peshawar region MNA Mohammad Atif Khan and president for Peshawar district MNA Sher Ali Arbab comes 10 days after the de-notification of communication and works minister Shakeel Khan over alleged corruption.

These three PTI leaders are reportedly part of a group opposing Mr Gandapur.

PTI general secretary in the province Ali Asghar Khan notified the elevation of PTI Peshawar district general secretary Mohammad Asim Khan as the new regional president and additional general secretary Irfan Saleem as the district president.

He also issued a notification of the appointment of Shahab Khan as the new general secretary of PTI’s Peshawar district.

The Peshawar region comprises Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s central districts, including Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera.

Conflicts in the PTI and its provincial government surfaced when party founder Imran Khan sent a stern message from his jail cell to members of his party’s government that they all would be held accountable for corruption and governance issues in their departments.

The message was made public by the then provincial minister for communication and works department, Shakeel Khan, during a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club on August 3.

“He (Imran Khan) had information that all is not well in some departments, so he asked us to deliver a clear-cut message to cabinet members, administrative secretaries and other government officials that they will be held responsible for any corruption, commission and irregularities in their departments,” Mr Shakeel said after meeting Mr Imran along with other party leaders in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.

Sources in the PTI claimed that the provincial government was not happy with the way Imran Khan’s message was delivered to the cabinet by one of its members.

They added that apparently, Mr Shakeel was punished through the August 17 de-notification as a minister amid growing PTI infighting over alleged corruption and irregularities in top echelons of the province’s leadership.

However, the former minister claimed to have quit the cabinet, with his “resignation letter” starting to circulate on social media platforms around midnight.

However, the provincial government insisted that the communication minister be removed on the recommendation of a three-member accountability committee formed by the chief minister on the orders of Mr Imran.

Mr Atif later uploaded a message in favour of Mr Shakeel from his account on X (formerly Twitter), declaring him an honest person.

“I have worked in the cabinet with Shakeel Ahmad for ten years and have never seen a more honest minister than him. He (Shakeel) pointed out the corruption in KP cabinet when asked by Imran Khan in jail. A conspiracy was hatched against Shakeel Khan. Two conspirators will be exposed when the time comes,” he tweeted.

Sources in the PTI claimed that some central leaders of the party, including former president Arif Alvi, had requested the sacked minister and office-bearers not to issue any statement that could fuel party differences.

They added that those leaders believed that the growing rifts in the ruling party would badly affect the movement for the release of Mr Imran and plans for a public rally in Islamabad on Sept 8.

PTI gets go-ahead for jalsa on Islamabad outskirts

Party leader says venue ‘belongs to military’, believes ties improving with establishment
NOC says list of participants to be shared with police; organizers to be responsible in case of violation of agreement

ISLAMABAD: The district administration on Thursday issued a no-objection certificate to the PTI for a public gathering on the outskirts of Islamabad on September 8, with a condition that the permission can be cancelled at any time in case of a “security situation”.

The venue is a 350 kanal compound located on Paswal Road near Sangjani and is reportedly under the control of the military establishment. The selection of the venue has also energised the PTI workers as they believe that the ice has started to melt between the PTI and the powers that be.

The PTI has been allocated another compound of 250 kanals for parking. According to a PTI leader, the workers believe that the ice between the establishment and the party chief, Imran Khan, has started to melt if not fully thawed.

“When we asked the district administration why the land under the control of the military establishment is being allocated to us for the jalsa, we were told that ‘they’ have directed us to issue the NOC for that land. This news has energised the workers and they have started arrangements with full enthusiasm,” he said.

PTI Islamabad President Amir Mughal told Dawn that the deputy commissioner had allowed their gathering near Sangjani Chowk. “Although the place, allotted for the public meeting, is in the suburbs of the federal capital still we will hold a massive public meeting, which will be the largest in the history of Islamabad,” he claimed.

He said the meeting would pave the way for the release of Imran Khan. Replying to a question, he said that there will be a separate enclosure for women participants. “We will start working at the venue from Friday (today) and I appeal to the masses to reach the venue on September 8 at 2pm,” he said.

Permission for jalsa

The NOC said the gathering shall not disturb or disrupt the fundamental rights of citizens of Islamabad and adjoining areas by blocking roads. Besides, the gathering shall start at 4pm and shall end at 7pm and it will be the organisers’ duty to ensure the dispersal after the end of the event.

No object of lethal or non-lethal force, including batons of any size, would be wielded by any participant in the gathering. In case of any violence, the organisers shall be held responsible. The list of the participants shall be shared with the police in advance.

The organisers shall take responsibility that the participants shall not illegally move beyond the identified boundary of the venue, and any violation of this and resultant consequences shall be the responsibility of the organiser.

Anti-state speeches shall not be made and effigy or flag of any political or religious party shall not be burnt. The traffic management plan and vehicle parking plan of the police shall be adhered to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

For the safety of the general public and maintenance of law and order at the venue, the police and law enforcement agencies shall not be obstructed in search of any vehicle or person coming to attend the gathering.

A list of people to be allowed on the stage shall be provided to the Islamabad administration at least 12 hours in advance. In case of violation of any of the above terms and conditions, the organisers shall be liable to face legal proceedings and the NOC shall automatically stand cancelled.

For the past several months, the PTI had been trying to get approval for a public meeting in the capital but it was not allowed by the administration. In March this year, after no response from the district administration despite multiple attempts, the PTI approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for permission.

The district administration subsequently allowed the PTI to hold a meeting on Ramazan 27 but the political party refused to accept the date claiming that workers would be busy in mosques.

After Eidul Azha, the district administration did not allow it to organise the gathering because of Muharram.

In July, the PTI announced a protest but it was postponed as district administration did not allow the party to hold the protest.

The meeting was rescheduled for August 22 but district administration cancelled the NOC at the eleventh hour, giving a new date of Sept 8.

PTI rally venue changed ahead of power show

The Islamabad district administration has changed the venue for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) upcoming rally on September 8, ARY News reported on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz issued a new NOC, relocating the event to a site opposite the original venue in Sangjani area of federal capital.

PTI leader Aamir Mughal, accompanied by senior party members, visited the new location late at night, vowing that the rally would proceed as scheduled.

Mughal asserted that no force could hinder the September 8 power show and that the government’s actions demonstrated its fear of PTI’s public influence.

The district administration had granted conditional approval for the rally, stipulating that it would run from 4 pm to 7 pm, with no disruption to business or public movement.

PTI organizers were tasked with ensuring security and managing rally participants.

Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz assured that the route provided for the rally would minimize inconvenience to the public, with specific routes designated for attendees from different regions, including Motorway M1 for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa convoys and Motorway M2 for those from Punjab.

The rally is set to take place on September 8 with strict guidelines, including prohibitions on sit-ins and hate speeches.

PTI will fight legal battle, says Barrister Saif

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Adviser to Chief Minister on Information and Public Relations Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said on Monday the PTI would respond legally to the government’s high-handed tactics of arresting the party senior leaders.

He made this remark while appearing in ‘Dunya Mehar Bukhari kay Sath’ in which he said the government should note that the PTI would do its politics in the same manner.

He said if Ali Amin Gandapur had made any inappropriate remarks he should be dealt with according to the law while adding that the PTI leaders have been arrested in an abrupt manner by disregarding the sanctity of the parliament.

He said severe crackdown on the most popular party meant that politics would remain in peril.

Saif also said that he would take this matter to the court as the people of the country support the PTI.

Lawyers to launch protest against curbs on judicial powers: PTI

PTI Senator and ex-president of the Supreme Court Bar Association Hamid Khan has warned the legal fraternity will launch protest against any attempt to limit judiciary’s powers.

Speaking at a presser at the Lahore High Court Bar Association on Wednesday, he expressed concern that the government seems to be attempting to curtail the powers of the courts.

He expressed surprise over the gossip about a ‘constitutional package’.

He said wherever such a package was introduced in the world, it is debated for months in the parliament.

Senator Khan said the parliament is not playing its role, and the prime minister is talking about a constitutional court.

He also expressed regret that the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the reserved seats has not yet been implemented, which amounts to contempt of court and sought action against those responsible.

Senator Khan warned that parallel courts to the Supreme Court and high courts cannot be established in the country and the appointments of so-called judges for new courts are not acceptable.

“If such actions are taken, lawyers across the country will resist the move,” he announced.

He also demanded that a notification for appointment of the new chief justice be issued. He condemned the abolition of the contempt of court law, saying the very forces that do not implement the court’s decisions want to abolish the contempt of court law.

Insaf Lawyers’ Forum-Pakistan chapter President Ishtiaq A. Khan said Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa used to talk about the sanctity of the parliament, but he was doing nothing to stop new constitutional amendments.

He alleged that the extension in chief justice’s term was part of the ‘London plan’.

PTI postpones Friday protests

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) called off its scheduled protest for Friday.

The party sources said that the protest may lead to the arrest of the party leaders and workers.

It is to be recalled that the PTI had also announced to conduct a seminar on September 17 and a rally on September 21.

After the sad incident of arrest of party MNAs, the party leadership announced protest on Friday.

The party leadership thought it more important to participate in the Eid Miladul Nabi (SAW) programmes and September 21 rally.

The party leadership also reiterated that the Lahore rally would be held at every cost.

It merits to mention here that Islamabad police had conducted an operation against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, taking into custody all PTI members who had sought refuge in the Parliament House.

Federal police arrested MNAs Zain Qureshi and Sheikh Waqas Akram from inside the Parliament House. Additionally, police detained Owais Ahmed Chatha, Syed Shah Ahmed, Sunni Ittehad Council's Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Yousaf Khan, Maulana Naseem Shah, and Ahmed Shah Khattak.

Sources indicated that prior to the arrests, the lights in the Parliament House were turned off, allowing officers to enter the premises.

Earlier, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, Sher Afzal Marwat, and Shoaib Shaheen were also arrested. Sher Afzal Marwat, Barrister Gohar, and Zubair Khan were apprehended while exiting the Parliament House, though Zartaj Gul managed to escape successfully.

Sources suggested that Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Sher Afzal Marwat were arrested due to violations including not adhering to the route agreement from a rally in Sangjani, attacking Islamabad police, violating rally timings, and making anti-state speeches.

Can you explain why NS and the establishment are taking PK towards a civil war? PK had a flawed election but still IK and the PTI WON a 2/3rd majority and literallly every dog and its auntie knows that crooks couldnt win their own seats. Not one of thugs won their seat, not one. They all lost and guess what our establishment despite taking a very active part also got smashed and because his puppets got smashed, they decided to steal our mandate. IK won the election but he isnt PM, so what do you want the PK people to do when their mandate has been stolen. Do you want them to stop asking for their rights and let the thugs rule? They arent retarded, its that support these crooks that have fleeced us for generations. If Afridi stands for MNA he wont win his thesil, never mind become the PM. Afridi has been launched to attack IK a number of times, but it came to zilch. IK is PK nationalist and we are proud of him, look at the pathetic crooks with their billions in London, Paris Dubai etc asking people to invest in PK. If that isnt retarded then what is? The Cypher is fact and it was admitted at the time and SS has admitted it is fact, so at least do some research. Are you saying 1971 didnt happen? We know it was a fact because BD exists, and it happened because the establishment and Bhutto didnt accept the results of a democratic election, just like when these criminals decided that it didnt matter that they cant win their own seats, they were still going to be PM and CM under their personal deity called establishment

Most of the "game changer" CPEC "investments" are loans with a guaranteed rate of return

Military-opposition Standoff Threatens Pakistan's Stability

After Pakistan police stormed parliament's premises to arrest several opposition lawmakers on terrorism charges, analysts say a standoff between former prime minister Imran Khan's party and the country's powerful military threatens to reduce politics to a clash between the two sides.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party staged a rare demonstration in the capital Islamabad this week, the largest since the former cricketer was jailed last year.

Shortly after the rally, police cut power to the parliament compound and plainclothes officers forced their way in, where PTI lawmakers were taking refuge to avoid possible arrest.

"It is increasingly becoming a clash between the opposition and the military," political analyst Zahid Hussain told AFP.

"The way lawmakers were arrested will further escalate the politics of confrontation... it will further polarise the country," he added.

"This approach is creating a dangerously unstable situation".

PTI has been sparring with the military since Khan was deposed two years ago.

One thing is for sure, current PTI leadership in assemblies has failed to engage meaningfully with fake govt. Or Est. , IK is in jail so the responsibility is on current Chairman his core committee and CM KP to carve out a desired outcome.

Unfortunately populist approach has not yielded any result.

With this deadlock between PTI and Est. It's only the country which is suffering

PTI moves LHC for public gathering permission at Minar-e-Pakistan

The Lahore High Court (LHC) fixed for hearing a plea filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seeking permission to hold a public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, ARY News reported.

According to details, PTI Central Punjab Senior Vice President Akmal Khan Bari approached the LHC, seeking permission to hold a power show at Minar-e-Pakistan on October 5.

The petitioner maintained that holding that holding a public gathering is their constitutional right, requesting the court accept their plea.

LHC’s Justice Farooq Haider will take up the petition on Thursday and Sardar Khurram Latif Khosa to appear on behalf of the PTI.

The PTI has already approached the district administration and sought permission for the power show at Minar-e-Pakistan on October 5.

Section 144 imposed in Rawalpindi ahead of PTI protest on Sept 28

The Punjab government on Friday imposed Section 144 ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) protest in Rawalpindi.

Moreover, the provincial administration also banned all types of gatherings and political activities in the city.

The Home Department issued a notification to this effect. The department also forwarded a letter to the federal government to deploy Rangers.

Earlier, the district administration Friday sealed Liaqat Bagh premises in response to PTI's call for a protest on September 28.

Sources reported that locks have been placed on the gates of the park, and a substantial number of police deployed both inside and outside the premises. People who had come to the park for a walk were reportedly asked to leave as part of security measures.

PTI urged its supporters to gather at Liaqat Bagh by 2PM on Saturday.

On the other hand, the PTI finalised its strategy for tomorrow‘s protest at Liaqat Bagh, Rawalpindi. According to party sources, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur will lead the protest.

The PTI leaders from Islamabad will head to Liaqat Bagh in convoys, with party workers instructed to gather there by 2pm.

In case of roadblocks, the workers will protest where they can. The convoys from Islamabad, northern Punjab, and KP will join the Rawalpindi protest.

Legal support will be provided by the Insaf Lawyers Forum in case of arrests, the sources said.

KP govt to take legal action against police crackdown during Rawalpindi protest

RAWALPINDI/PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Sunday announced to take legal action over clashes between Punjab police and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers during its protest in Rawalpindi for which cases have been registered against dozens of party leaders.

"The government had planned a Model Town-like tragedy yesterday. [Our] workers were [subjected] to straight firing [and] our women [workers] were shelled upon," said Adviser to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister on Information Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif while speaking to Geo News.

The spokesperson's statement comes after the Imran Khan-founded party "called off" its protest in Rawalpindi due to violent clashes between police and workers on Saturday.

The former ruling party had announced holding a demonstration in the city, however, the Punjab government had then imposed Section 144 banning all political gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, protests and similar activities.

With PTI workers attempting to head towards the Liaquat Bagh, the police had resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the crowd which was then retaliated by party activists who started hurling stones and glass bottles at the law enforcers.

Speaking on yesterday's events, Barrister Saif said that the KP government will approach the courts and directions will be issued to the provincial advocate general for taking legal action in this regard.

Which law justifies the use of shelling against peaceful workers, questioned the provincial government official.

His remarks come after KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur, irked by police action, said that they would reply to every bullet, shell and baton that would be used against its supporters.

"More than 50 PTI workers have been injured in shelling as shells and bullets were fired every three kilometres on us," he said in a statement on Sunday, adding that bullets were fired on three of their workers and the whereabouts of one of them could not be traced.

Forward block is about to be formed in PTI, claims Vawda

Senator Faisal Vawda has made a bold claim, stating that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will form a forward block led by what he described as “subservient politicians”, ARY News reported on Sunday.

Speaking to the media, Senator Vawda suggested that certain PTI members have deliberately sabotaged the party by boycotting the vote on the constitutional amendments.

He indicated that this move was orchestrated, and the public deserves to know the truth.

According to Vawda, had the opposition been involved, they would have voted against the amendments. He further claimed that a clever politician will lead the PTI forward block.

Earlier to this, Vawda had posted on X (formerly Twitter), hinting at developments regarding the 26th constitutional amendment, writing, “Anyone wants to come is welcomed, otherwise there are more numbers than needed, Inshallah today after the amendment we will cut the cake.”

He had also emphasized that the amendment would pass regardless of opposition, saying, “Whether anyone shows up or not.” He added that there would be no resolution for those who engaged in bribery or intimidation.

In his earlier remarks, Vawda also targeted key figures within PTI, referring to them as “Bukau Mall” (sellouts) and accusing them of enjoying their positions while the founder of PTI remains in jail.

He expressed disappointment, stating that PTI had recognized the current government and even requested to meet its jailed leader.

Its now pretty clear every senior PTI leader is compromised

Ali Amin Gandapur
Barrister Gohar
Sher Afzal Marwat
Shandana Gulzar
Shibli Faraz
Ali Muhammad Khan

They had one task i.e. to keep their MNA's and Senators safe and loyal, they failed to do so and these MNA's sold themselves even though they were apparently kept in a safe house in Kpk. The action of all these leaders and workers have been suspect for a while. Its clear that they have been assured by the establishment that if they follow GHQ instructions they and their family members will not be harrassed.

The actions of Zain Qureshi and his sister Mehr Bano Qureshi are now clearly indicating that the establishment is going to install Shah Mahmood Qureshi as the next PTI leader after IK.

PTI workers will need to take matters into their own hand, their only leader is in prison. They should refuse to recognize any other leadership and march straight to Adiala.

PTI issues show-cause notice to Zain Qureshi, others for party violation

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) issued on Tuesday the show-cause notice to Zain Qureshi and others, citing party violation.

According to details, PTI stalwart Firdous Shamim Naqvi had issued the show-cause notice to Qureshi, Riaz Fatyana, Aslam Ghumman, Miqdad Ali Khan.

In an issued notification, the PTI stated: "Why had the contact been deliberately cut off?”

“The mentioned leaders will have to submit responses on the show-cause notice within seven days. The party’s membership will be relinquished if a satisfactory response is not given.”

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) National Assembly member Zain Qureshi announced his resignation as Deputy Parliamentary Leader, citing a recent show-cause notice from his party

Qureshi made his resignation public on social media platform X on Saturday, explaining that he had responded to the party’s notice.

“In respect of a free and fair inquiry and recognising the sentiments of our supporters, I am stepping down from my role as Deputy Parliamentary Leader,” Qureshi wrote.

He affirmed his continued loyalty to PTI, its founder, and his father, saying, “I was, am, and will remain loyal to my party, my leader, and my father.”

The show-cause notices stemmed from a recent vote on the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which PTI chose to boycott. PTI issued these notices to six members for supporting the amendment despite the party's decision to abstain.

Those people who sold their country should be kicked out of the party. How can they be loyal moving forward when they were no loyal when it mattered the most.

PTI’s Marwat reveals ‘actual number’ of defected MNAs

As many as 21 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members of the National Assembly defected during the 26th Constitutional Amendment vote earlier this month, PTI lawmaker Sher Afzal Marwat said on Monday.

“A list of 11 defectors emerged during the approval of the constitutional amendment,” he said while appearing on Aaj News programme Spotlight with Munizae Jahangir. “We horrifyingly discovered that six or seven more individuals were in contact with the government.”

The government narrowly passed constitutional amendments on Monday giving lawmakers more power to appoint top judges, who have issued a series of recent decisions favouring opposition chief Imran Khan.

The judicial reforms changed the appointment process of the chief justice of Pakistan and the formation of benches. It also set a date for the end of riba (interest-based banking) “as far as practicable by January 1, 2028.”

According to reports, some lawmakers from Imran Khan’s party defected and were in favour of voting for the amendment despite the party’s decision to oppose it.

Zain Qureshi quit as the PTI deputy parliamentary leader amid an inquiry into violating party discipline by skipping the National Assembly session earlier this month.

Marwat, known for his outspoken demeanour, stated that the ruling coalition’s “negotiations for a bargaining” with JUI-F Chairman Maulana Fazlur Rehman were ongoing until the last moment. “If they had failed at any stage, those 12 defectors would have been revealed.”

If Fazl had not agreed, then 21 PTI MNAs would have been exposed, he claimed and added that all evidence points against such defectors.

The party had decided to shift all MNAs to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and had advised those abroad not to return, he revealed. “But some returned and aligned themselves with the opposing faction while those in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa discreetly escaped to join them.” He questioned their lack of explanation for their actions.

Marwat claimed that the deals made with defecting members were neither orchestrated by the Pakistan Peoples Party nor the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz. He did not mention who was behind it.

“Attempts were made to reach nearly every MNA, with offers reaching up to Rs2 billion, which had indeed been given. The four who voted in favour did not do so altruistically.”

When asked, the PTI leader said that Khan would never want his wife, sisters, or family members to lead a protest. He substantiated his claims by saying that when Khan decided to nominate Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as chairman, the latter explicitly stated that “no family member would contest in party elections.”

While addressing the clause in the 26th Constitutional Amendment that prevents challenges, he posed a hypothetical scenario: “If a two-thirds majority approved a law mandating that men receive sterilisation injections in Pakistan, would that not be subject to challenge?”

He added: “Khan’s legal team has become limited, with most cases now handled by Barrister Ali Zafar and Salman Safdar while some cases are being overseen by Salman Akram Raja.”

Anti-graft body summons PTI lawmaker over Malam Jabba land lease

In a surprising move, the Anti-Corruption Establishment Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has summoned senior Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader and MNA Mohammad Atif Khan as part of its inquiry into the much-publicised Malam Jabba land lease case, which has already been closed by the National Accountability Bureau three years ago.

A call-up notice was issued to Mr Atif, a former provincial minister, by the head of the ACE’s special investigation wing, asking him to appear before the inquiry officer on Nov 12 for recording statement under Section 161 of the Code of Criminal procedure and Rule 3(2) of the ACE Rules.

The notice, issued on Oct 31, said that a complaint from the year 2018 had been under investigation about allegations of corruption and misuse of authority in Malam Jabba Project (Samson Group of Companies).

As the move gives credence to the reports about wrangling in the PTI, Mr Atif said that it was known to all why and at whose behest, the notice was issued by his party’s government in the province.

“The Malam Jabba case was closed by the NAB. Whoever is doing this is damaging the party as well as Imran Khan,” the lawmaker said in an audio message and apost on social media forum, X (formerly Twitter).

“This is our province and our party and I won’t remain silent over such acts damaging it,” he said.

He said the Malam Jabba deal had taken place in 2014 when he was neither the chief minister nor the tourism minister.

With the matter lingering on for many years, an accountability court accepted on Nov 2, 2021, a NAB plea to close investigation against former chief minister Pervez Khattak and several officials in the case of leasing of government land in Malam Jabba, Swat, in 2014.

The NAB had claimed that no evidence of corruption could be traced in the matter.

In the application, the NAB said that investigation was started against the then chief minister of KP, Pervez Khattak, former additional chief secretary (planning and development) Khalid Pervez, then managing director of Tourism Corporation Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TCKP), Mushtaq Khan and others regarding alleged illegal leasing of 275 acres of state forest land in Malam Jabba to Samsons Group of Companies.

It added that it was satisfied that no prima facie criminal case was made out against the accused under the provisions of National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) and therefore, the matter was being referred to the accountability court for approval of closure of investigation against those people.

The allegations in the investigation included the illegal lease of forest land measuring 275 acres; extension of lease period from 15 to 33 years by the chief minister; and irregularities in awarding of contract/ bidding process.

“In view of the facts and circumstances coupled with record made available, the request of the NAB for closure of the investigation is prima facie valid and genuine to the extent of award of contract with regard to its irregularities followed by its rectifications accordingly, as such, exercising jurisdiction under Section 9(c) NAO 1999 read with Section 18(d) of NAO, the request so floated is allowed accordingly,” the accountability court had ruled.

The court observed that the matter regarding illegal lease of forest land had been disposed of by the Peshawar High Court in its order on Oct 1, 2020, by directing the KP additional chief secretary to immediately submit the report of a committee, already notified by the provincial government on June 25, 2018, to settle the dispute of ownership and title of 270 acres of forest land.

The court observed that the committee gave its findings in a report, which was approved by the provincial cabinet on Dec 28, 2020, according to which the tourism department was the rightful owner of the said land and not the forest department and the land in question was federal land and was given prior to merger of Swat state in Pakistan.

The report also provided that prima facie the entry in the revenue record was erroneous.

The court further mentioned that the matter had been resolved and the subject land had been de-notified.

“Similarly, the lease period has also been approved by the Cabinet from 15 to 33 years, as such, ex-post facto sanction was granted,” the judge observed.

He added that the issue had also been thoroughly examined by the NAB in its executive board meeting and it had been expressed that the malice and mala fide intent had not been surfaced in the grant of subject lease and allied matters.

The issue also remained pending with the high court in the form of petitions, with the NAB adopting the same stand it had before the accountability court.

Imran violated party’s constitution in nominating Raja as PTI secy gen

The Constitution of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf does not recognize Salman Akram Raja as Secretary General of the PTI.

PTI sources told The News that there is no provision in the PTI constitution for ‘nomination’ as the Secretary General of someone who has not been elected before as party of the ‘Panel of Secretary General’. Only an Additional Secretary General can take over as Secretary General in case this all-important party get vacant.

These sources said that neither Omar Ayub, who was the elected Secretary General of the party, has been denotified nor Salman Akram Raja has been notified as yet as Ayub’s replacement. Omar Ayub had resigned from this key party position but it has not yet been formally accepted. On the direction of Imran Khan, the founder PTI Chairman, Salman Akram Raja is presently serving as Secretary General but it has no legal backing and instead is in violation of the PTI’s Constitution.

Chairman PTI Barrister Gohar Ali Khan when contacted confirmed that the notification of Salman Akram Raja as PTI’s SG has not been issued, he said these are the party’s internal matters and not all that important that the media should focus them. He said Raja’s work as SG of the party is part of the internal management of the PTI.

PTI protest: Omar Ayub reveals list of demands

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan has demanded the restoration of the rule of law in Pakistan. Speaking to a private television channel, he called for the release of all PTI members, including Imran Khan, who he claims are unjustly imprisoned. He also reiterated the party’s demand for fresh elections.

Ayub stated that the PTI does not seek concessions or relief, asserting that such relief will automatically follow once conditions are met. He described all cases against Imran Khan as fabricated, expressing concern over his lack of access to the former Prime Minister for two months. He mentioned learning about a “final call” from Khan through the media and indicated that the party will consult on the matter and act accordingly.

Ayub revealed that he spends 95% of his time attending court hearings for over 100 cases, facing arrest warrants if he fails to appear. He accused intelligence agencies of attempting to create a faction within the PTI by pressuring party members.

Regarding the 26th Constitutional Amendment, Ayub stated that show-cause notices have been issued to PTI members who lost contact during that period, assuring that those who are innocent will be cleared. He criticized a parliamentary committee for deviating from its mandate.

Ayub confirmed that Mahmoud Achakzai has been authorized to hold negotiations with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other political parties.

He alleged that the events of May 9th were a setup, citing the non-release of CCTV footage as evidence. He also announced the filing of a petition against the alleged illegal detention of PTI members in Adiala Jail.

PTI bans mobile phones in meetings after Bushra Bibi’s audio leak

In light of concerns over a potential audio leak involving PTI founder Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi, the party imposed a ban on mobile phones during meetings, sources said on Monday. Despite that, an audio of her has surfaced online.

Khan has urged his followers to march towards Islamabad on November 24 for the “restoration” of democracy and the judiciary. Ruling coalition leaders have slammed the PTI for causing unrest in the country with such protests.

In reaction, the PTI founder set four demands for ending the protest. They are related to the recent steps taken by the government like the 26th Constitutional Amendment. According to former information minister Fawad Chaudhry, Khan’s demands “are not wrong.”

Special arrangements were made for the former first lady during meetings to prevent any leaks. The ban on mobile devices was strictly enforced, with phones confiscated from members and officials in previous meetings.

Bibi’s audio leak was the “primary reason” behind the mobile phone ban in such gatherings, they added.

In the audio, she can be heard saying, “I bring the message of the PTI founder. No one should say tomorrow that they didn’t receive it; everyone has been informed.”

Khan’s wife further urged that each MPA should bring a “convoy of 5,000 people and each MNA 10,000,” declaring, “No one should say they were arrested; the process of arrests will begin now, and you must strategize to avoid capture.”

She added that all officials should prepare alternatives in case of arrests, saying: “If someone gets arrested, then the convoy will be led by an alternative leader. We don’t want to hear excuses later about arrests or shelling. All officials should take pictures and videos inside their vehicles and share them with us.”

Moreover, Bibi has urged party leaders to deliver videos to both domestic and international media as soon as they are available online. She warned that those who fail to provide evidence would not receive tickets in the future.

“This is not just a struggle for the PTI founder but for the freedom of the country,” she said and insisted on the importance of keeping international media engaged. “November 24 will test your loyalty to the founder and the nation. We are a proud and resilient nation; those who are true and honourable will stand with the founder.”

ECP disqualifies PTI-backed MNA Adil Bazai over floor crossing

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday disqualified Adil Bazai, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from Quetta, under Article 63A of the Constitution.

The decision came after the ECP upheld a reference submitted by the NA Speaker at the request of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, seeking Bazai’s disqualification for violating party policy.

The ECP stated that Bazai failed to cast his vote on the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, an act deemed contrary to party directions, thereby certifying his removal. As a result, the NA-262 Quetta seat has been declared vacant.

Adil Bazai was elected from the NA-262 constituency during the last general elections as an independent candidate (PTI) and later he joined the PML-N.

A resolution demanding a ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), a main opposition party in the province, was submitted in the Punjab Assembly Secretariat on Monday.

The resolution says the PTI is an extremist party and demands that it should be banned immediately.

Submitted by PML-N member Hina Parvez Butt, the resolution said that this House strongly condemned the attack on the federation by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers in groups.

It said the chief executive of a province and the former first lady were attacking the federation. The miscreants and rioters have injured police personnel and set vehicles on fire.

The resolution said that a group caused damage to the lives and properties of the people under a well-planned conspiracy, and Pakistan suffered a loss of Rs190 billion due to the one-day protest of the PTI.

PTI facing ban? Faisal Vawda claims party's future in jeopardy after violent protest

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is facing mounting pressure following the abrupt end of its recent three-day protest in Islamabad with political figures speculating about the party’s future and the possibility of a ban.

Senator Faisal Vawda claimed that PTI is "going to be banned," citing the party's controversial role in the May 9 riots and ongoing political instability.

Vawda's comments, made during an interview on a local news channel, followed the violent clashes between PTI protesters and security forces in Islamabad, where teargas and other crowd-control methods were used to disperse the crowd.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has taken a more aggressive stance with the party announcing plans to table a resolution in the Balochistan Assembly calling for a ban on PTI.

The resolution comes in the wake of increasing calls from within the government to hold PTI accountable for the violence of May 9, a day that saw widespread protests and attacks on state institutions.

A former PTI member himself, Senator Vawda did not mince words when discussing the current leadership of PTI.

He accused the party’s leadership of being absent from the protest, stating that figures like Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan were nowhere to be seen, and PTI leaders failed to take responsibility for the chaos.

He targeted Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, accusing her of playing a central role in PTI's current predicament.

"Bushra Bibi created trouble for the party," he stated, referring to her insistence on holding the protest at D-Chowk despite the government’s offer to relocate the demonstration to a less contentious area, Sangjani.

The senator alleged that PTI’s failure to adjust the protest’s location contributed to the situation spiralling out of control.

Vawda also hinted that PTI's leadership has made preparations to keep Imran Khan in jail, suggesting that the party's future is being shaped by those closest to him, with Bushra Bibi at the helm.

Earlier this year, the government had already hinted at a possible ban on PTI due to its involvement in the May 9 unrest, during which military installations were attacked, and the party allegedly sought to undermine Pakistan's economic deals, particularly with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Salman Akram Raja resigns as PTI Secretary General

Salman Akram Raja on Thursday resigned from the post of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General, in the face of growing criticism against party leadership following the Islamabad protest.

According to ARY News, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has confirmed receiving Salman Akram Raja’s resignation.

The party leaders are under severe scrutiny after PTI workers retreated from D-Chowk in Islamabad, without succeeding in ensuring the release of party founder Imran Khan.

The former ruling party is in turmoil following the arrest of hundreds of its workers after the authorities launched a grand operation against the PTI protesters in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, sources said that PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja’s resignation is expected to be followed by more.

Sahibzada Hamid Raza steps down from PTI's core committee

Sunni Ittehad Council chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza stepped down from the political and core committee of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Sources said that Raza’s resignation arose from internal party criticism and disagreements regarding the Nov 24 protest.

It has also been reported that Sahibzada Hamid Raza plans to resign from his National Assembly seat. He is expected to formally submit his resignation following a meeting with the PTI founder.

This development follows the resignation of Salman Akram Raja from his position as PTI’s Secretary General.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan had earlier confirmed Raja’s leaving the party.

PTI's Salman Akram Raja retracts resignation on party orders

Salman Akram Raja has retracted his resignation as the secretary-general of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in adherence to the party's directive.

“Yes, he [Raja] has withdrawn his resignation, as the party did not accept it and asked him to continue,” confirmed PTI Information-Secretary Waqas Akram when approached by The News.

Waqas further elaborated that Raja had recently visited and participated in a meeting of the party’s political committee.

Raja had initially stepped down from his position after facing criticism from some party members for failing to travel from Lahore to Islamabad to join a protest alongside a convoy of demonstrators.

Before that, he had issued a video message day addressing the objections raised against him, a day after the eventful November 27 retreat of the PTI leadership and workers from the federal capital during the much-hyped "do-or-die" protest.

He also explained that the government's strict security measures, including roadblocks and bridge closures, had made it impossible for him to reach Islamabad to participate in the protest.

In his statement, the PTI secretary-general made it clear that he did not believe in theatrics or symbolic gestures like reaching D-Chowk merely for photo opportunities.

“It is not appropriate for me to act in such a manner,” he remarked. “I will always be honest with you, explaining both what I am capable of doing and what I am not,” he added.

Besides Salman, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza had also resigned from a key position in the PTI.

The resignations came after the abrupt end to the PTI's protest in Islamabad following a crackdown by the law enforcers, which saw nearly 1,000 arrests in the wee hours of last Wednesday.

The protest, which PTI described as a “final call,” took place on November 26 at Islamabad’s D-Chowk, two days after PTI supporters began a large-scale march to the capital, demanding Imran Khan’s release.

Opposition leader Omar Ayub resigns

National Assembly Opposition Leader and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub has resigned from his position as a member of the Judicial Commission, ARY News reported.

According to reports, Omar Ayub informed the Speaker of the National Assembly about his decision through an official letter.

In the letter, Omar Ayub stated that he is resigning due to legal challenges stemming from an FIR filed against him, which hinder his ability to serve effectively on the commission.

He emphasised that, in the best interest of the institution, someone else should take up the responsibility. Ayub proposed Barrister Gohar as his replacement, expressing confidence in Gohar’s legal expertise and integrity as valuable assets to the commission.

PTI declines to participate in APC called by KP governor

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced that it will not participate in the All Parties Conference (APC) convened by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.

According to PTI, the party accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of pursuing a "nefarious agenda" aimed at banning PTI and aligning itself with policies that allegedly facilitate violence against peaceful citizens in exchange for political gains.

The party denounced the PPP’s involvement, stating that it lacks a mandate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is only furthering the federal government’s objectives. PTI underlined that the provincial government is committed to addressing the issues of the people and expressed openness to considering any serious recommendations from the governor on provincial matters.

Although SMQ has shown loyalty to IK deep down he is a status quo guy and wants to make a deal. The problem is that he can't make any deal which puts IK in difficulty because he too would be finished. The PTI ground workers are not going to accept any deal with these murderous thugs without full justice for the chaos over the last 3 years

The PTI workers and supporters need to come out against their own leadership.
Then what it will be mauja hi mauja for govt. Yes PTI workers are frustrated , same way the first tier manpower in law enfor. agencies are also frustrated. Govt, Media, Judiciary & State all have joined against Pti

PTI leadership is nothing without Imran. They cannot match even 1 percent of what Imran brings to the people.

They ran away when the people needed them the most. They got hurt while the so called leaders took safe refuge.
I don't trust anybody except Imran only.

Omar Ayub among five leaders arrested after detention at Adiala Jail

Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub and several other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders were arrested on Thursday after being detained for several hours at the Adiala Jail.

Earlier in the day, jailed former prime minister Imran Khan and 99 other PTI leaders were indicted for their alleged role in the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi that occurred on May 9, 2023.

They had visited the prison to appear before the court in a case related to May 9 events. Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry told News Insight with Amir Zia that the leaders were detained at 3:45pm.

Former Punjab law minister Raja Basharat and Ayub were apprehended outside Adiala Jail. Zartaj Gul and Fawad Chaudhry, however, left the jail premises. Azimuddin, known as Bala, a staff member for Khan, and Ahmad Chatha were taken into custody. Police transferred him to the Adiala Police Station.

The court, upon a request from Advocate Ghulam Hussain Murtaza Sanbal, ordered Saddar SP Nabeel Khokhar to present Basharat, Ayub, Chatha, Majid, and Azimuddin in court by 7:30pm. But SP Khokhar failed to bring the detained leaders on time, prompting the anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi to issue a contempt of court notice. The court directed SP Khokhar to appear personally at 9am on Friday (tomorrow) to explain the delay.

Reports emerged that Ayub, Raja Basharat, and Chatha had been arrested in connection with cases filed in the Attock district while Majid and Azim were apprehended in a case registered at the Dhmial police station.

Sources within police said that the detained leaders are expected to be presented in court tomorrow.

The five arrested leaders have been moved from Adiala Jail to the Police Lines in Rawalpindi.

In a separate development, PTI leader Asad Qaiser announced that they would file a contempt of court petition in the Peshawar High Court against the arrest of Ayub. He demanded Ayub’s “immediate release”, alleging that his arrest was illegal and that the Punjab police are conducting unlawful arrests.

According to reports, Omar Ayub during a press conference, revealed that on December 5, he had an extended meeting with Imran Khan in jail but was arrested again despite securing bail.

Ayub stated that Imran Khan has directed PTI members to hold a prayer and Jirga session on December 13 in Peshawar, inviting all political parties to participate. Additionally, PTI’s international chapters will host events in their respective countries on December 15.

Omar Ayub shared that the primary agenda of the negotiation committee is to secure the release of detained PTI workers.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has suspended the Election Commission's November 21 decision to de-seat Member of National Assembly (MNA) Adil Bazai

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, heard the case. Justice Aqeel Abbasi and Justice Ayesha Malik were also part of the bench.

During the hearing, Adil Bazai's lawyer, Taimoor Aslam, referred to the decision on reserved seats.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, smiling, engaged in a conversation with Taimoor Aslam, saying, "Oh, are you really relying on the decision regarding the reserved seats?" Justice Aqeel Abbasi commented, "Now, they're saying there has been an amendment."

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, with a smile, remarked, "Has the decision regarding the reserved seats been implemented? Well, let's move on."

Justice Ayesha Malik asked, "Can you rely on the decision regarding reserved seats in this case? Was Adil Bazai part of the list of 81 members with reserved seats?"

The regular bench observed that the Election Commission cannot issue a declaration. It was explained to the court that determining the political affiliation of a candidate is the responsibility of the civil court.

In his arguments, the petitioner's lawyer, Taimoor Aslam, stated that Adil Bazai had been de-seated by the Election Commission under Article 63-A.

He further argued that the Election Commission did not properly assess the facts, nor did it call Adil Bazai for an inquiry.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah raised the question: If the matter of Adil Bazai's affidavits was in the civil court, how does the Election Commission have jurisdiction? Can the Election Commission take notice of a matter that is pending in the civil court?

Justice Ayesha Malik stated, "Adil Bazai has two affidavits, and he says he signed the second one. Can the Election Commission investigate fraud?"

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked, "First, we need to settle the matter of the Election Commission's jurisdiction. Removing someone from the assembly is not a trivial matter, so all aspects must be considered."

The court accepted Adil Bazai's appeal against his removal from NA-262 Quetta for initial hearing.

The regular bench of the Supreme Court issued notices to the Election Commission and other parties, adjourning the case until December 12.

PHC grants transit bail to PTI secretary general, two MNAs

Peshawar High Court on Wednesday granted transit bails to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf secretary general Salman Akram Raja and two lawmakers in cases registered after the party’ last month protests.

A single-member bench of PHC Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim allowed bail to Mr Raja till January 3 in eight cases registered against him in Islamabad and to MNAs Shahid Khattak and Amjid Ali in different cases till December 31, directing them to approach relevant courts by that dates, otherwise those orders would become ineffective.

Mr Raja informed the high court that he belonged to the major opposition party and after their recent protests in Islamabad the government registered multiple cases against him and other party leaders. He stated that he wanted to surrender before relevant courts in those cases, but he apprehended that he would be arrested on way to courts.

He said that presently there was an ongoing season of FIRs registration against PTI leaders. He added that he had no idea about the contents of FIRs against him.

Mr Raja requested the bench to grant him transit bail in the said cases so that he could freely approach relevant courts. When the bench inquired from him whether he was an MNA, he replied that as per Form-45 he was the MNA.

Similarly, in the petitions of MNAs Shahid Khattak and Amjid Ali, their counsel contended that they were charged in concocted cases by the government and they wanted to appear before relevant courts for which they needed transit bail.

Moreover, another bench consisting of Justice Sahibzada Asadullah and Justice Wiqar Ahmad granted protective bail to Mr Raja for a month, directing law enforcement agencies not to arrest him in any of the cases registered against him.

The bench issued notice to federal government and sought details of cases registered against him.

Advocate Alam Khan Adenzai appeared for the petitioner and stated that so far they were aware about eight of the cases registered against Mr Raja and in those cases he was granted transit bail by the bench of PHC chief justice. He added that they were not aware about any other case against the petitioner.

He argued that it was fundamental right of the petitioner that he should be informed about the cases wherein he was charged by law enforcement agencies. He requested the bench to seek details from the government and its law enforcement agencies about the cases against the petitioner so that he could approach relevant courts.

Meanwhile, Salman Akram Raja told journalists on the premises of high court that they had been fighting for the supremacy of the Constitution and law in the country. He added that the issue was not confined to PTI only rather belonged to the entire nation.

He claimed that the people, who were arrested in connection with Nov 26 protests, were implicated in the last year May 9 cases. He stated that the government was utilising the judicial system for its political objectives.

He said that government was trying to connect PTI founder Imran Khan with the trial of Faiz Hameed so as to conduct his trial by a military court, which would be a dangerous act.

He warned the government not to repeat the mistake, which was carried out regarding late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1977 and 1979, as it would result in anarchy in the country.

“We have to follow the Constitution and law and should not be convicting political leaders and Imran Khan in concocted and baseless cases,” Mr Raja said. He added that it would be an injustice with the country.
