What target will Pakistan set for South Africa in the 2nd Test?

Pakistan lead by 71 runs. I say rule of thumb will be that before lead is past 100 both openers are out. So what score will pakistan get in 2nd inns and set SA final inns.

My prediction - Pakistan 210 All out (lead 281).
 
Any target of over 270 should be enough for the Saffers.
 
If we don't let Maharaj settle, that's the only way we can get a good lead.

This pitch is flat, there's nothing there apart from a few deliveries which will seam.

If we bat sensibly, and if we bat well, we can boss this game.

If Abid is not comfortable against pace, he needs to maximize his time on the crease against spin, where he's good.
 
Need to just play out the Nortje/Rabada spells and we should then look to take advantage. Remember they are a bowler less, again a big chance to take advantage of the situation and build something big
 
I hope Pak somehow gets the luxury of deciding when to declare. I think 300+ would be ideal, 275+ would be good and around 250+ should be minimum.
 
There is no excuse not to get lead of atleast 300, pitch is still good to bat on

Someone needs to get a hundred
 
Anything over 200 will be tricky.

But what a mess they are making.
 
Wasim Akram on commentary saying that 260 should be enough for Pakistan.

Another 70 from here will make Pakistan the favourites

Another 100 will push SA out of the game completely

Rizwan and the tail has to score at least 70 more
 
Pitch is flat in my opinion ...they will take it as a one day score and chase it simple
 
We have enough I recon for unlce Nauman to run circles around the SA batsmen

Need scoreboard pressure and for that the target has to be at least 300...

Anything below that and Safr will just play positively and go for it. They have nothing to lose.

Below 230 Safr slight favourites
Between 232 and 299 evens
300 and above Pakistan are favourites

These stats just tell me that Safr are a due a big score.
Plus this wicket is still pretty flat

Remember 270 was supposed to be enough at Old Trafford where the wicket was spinning and seaming around

That was a different bowling attack and a different opponent.

Don’t think SA will fare too well against Nauman+Yasir and Hassan Ali on this track
 
Anything under 250 could be tight.

There are a few cracks on the pitch, but still not very bad to bat on if you play proper cricket.

If Pakistan's tail wags it will be game over for the Saffers, otherwise they could be on for a historic win in Asia.

Misbah will be really hoping that the tail gets him 40-50 more. The Media will grill him if he fails to win from this position. In short: it could be the end of him.
 
Pak are in a similar position as they were in against England in the 1st test last year where Buttler and Woakes won the game chasing around 270. Even in that game, Pak collapsed in the 2nd innings. Such a poor batting team with useless openers.

Yasir was pathetic in the first innings

Plus at the moment Arsenal are losing

No point at all to follow Arsenal this season. Looking forward for to a post Arteta era

SA will threaten with one or two Partnerships for sure. So yes, Pakistan do need to get to 250 safely.

Only if you were playing against England, then yes, but this SA team is waiting to board their flight. No fight in the batting department apart from that Dussen, and Bavuma guy.
 
Pakistan are still in this anything around 220-250 will be fine. However, 250 should be feasible.

SA haven’t done well all series and their batsmen have made numerous mistakes.
 
I think a lead of 260 or 265 should be fine obviously if they can get more than that the better
 
What’s the pitch like? Yasir going wicketless at 4.50 rpo, damn.
 
I think SAs highest successful chase is only 150 since 2015. Its even lower if you factor in away chases.
 
Apart from nauman the rest of our bowlers are prone to leaking runs and south africa have always maintained a good scoring rate.

I wouldn't settle less than 300 this pitch seems very flat and doesn't look like turning into a horrible minefield


We need a 100 more runs it will be better we get those runs because it will also take a good chunk of time out of day 4.

300 with 1.5 day to bowl will make us favourites.
 
Pakistan has the game in their bags , lead is already 200 plus their lower order are all capable of adding crucial runs , SA were out for 201 runs in first time , I do not see them making more than that in second innings

Your confidence worries me, these are Saffers and they are used to competing, it's in the nature's of the Afrikaaner culture not to give up.

You are asking to climb a mountain. 250 is huge, I have 0 confidence in Pakistan batting unless some divine help comes to support Pakistan batting and a miracle happens, Remember miracle do take place. 😀
 
Our tail has done a good job in this series of adding runs. I think we will find a way to get around 270 which should be enough.
 
Like I said in the match thread, 280 would be great but with only Nauman, Yasir and Shaheen to come it could be anything as they can all go cheaply first thing in the first hour as well.

There's plenty of time in the game with 2 full days so Saffers won't make the same mistake as they did in the first test.

They’ve made plenty of mistakes
 
Need to somehow add 50 runs more. Hassan needs to play like he does. No use of a blockathon.
 
If we can make 50-75 runs from Rizwan along with Hasan, Yasir, Nauman and Afridi then I would expect the entire Safr batting line up to make 300....

Elgar, Faf, Makrim and VDD are due a score...

I'm hopeful but not at all certain that we're ahead in this one especially the way Yasir bowled in the first innings.
 
Nortje and Rabada can blow away the tail so Rizwan needs to farm strike at least in first 30 mins or so.

Pakistan do need around 40-50 to feel confident. SA would fancy their chances with 220 odd chase
 
Pak will win the test. RSA will need around 330 to win.
 
Hopefully the last 4 can drag the lead past 250. Anything less and I'll be nervous.
 
300 plus to be on the safe side. We all know what happened in England. They were at 117-5 chasing 270 odd and one partnership killed us. The team is full of timid kittens, a good innings by anyone from the RSA camp can kill us again.

Anything less and I'm in panic mode.
Hopefully these 2 can score a few boundaries early to settle me down.
Hasan should just take the bowling on after getting his eye in

Day 4 pitch with asking Nauman and Yasir to bowl? They’ll gobble this challenge up easily.

Gotta spot the mistakes SA have made throughout this series when batting:

1. Not going on to convert their starts
2. Playing rash/loose shots
3. Bauvuma although a good player hasn’t bothered batting with the tail on both the occasions he made 40.

Ideally yes but 300 is unrealistic from here, at best I expect them to add 50 runs and that would take some doing too

Yes i agree, but you would think they have one good innings in them. Fawad run out cost a decent number of runs.

Not much happening especially against right handers.
All wickets have been missing straight balls.
We would be relying on the other team to balls up, and I don't want to be there
And Babar will brick it if it starts getting tight
 
Should try their best and target 300 to be on safer side.

You should never underestimate your opponent.
 
275+ on this pitch with Yasir and Nauman against SA... yeah we got this in the bag!
 
This is brilliant stuff by Pakistan and Rizwan. South Africa must be gutted.
 
I don't know what to say, it could so happen that within a span of less than a month, we might see 3 instances of 300+ scores getting chased down by teams batting 4th!

Test cricket was never like this!!
 
Pakistan still favourites. Sa still need 250 more while they havent scored even 240 this whole series. And they have a weak tail. We could also see a repeat of the first game. Sa were 150-1 and collapsed. If they do manage to get there then i hope people dont blame the bowlers much who helped us set a tatget or 370. Instead blame the top order.
 
How many people in this thread honestly predicted the target would be 370?

What brilliant batting by Rizwan and Nauman!
 
Watch Pakistan wilt when put under the pressure by South African batsmen. This game is far from over. If the bowlers don't get 4 wickets in the morning session, I'm backing SA to pull this run chase off.
