We need more people reviewing Tamil films as well Kiri @firebird Varun sensible-indian-fan :2ar15smil:AR15firin:comeandge:2gunsfiri:133::105::97:

I don't watch them, unfortunately.

'Man of Steel' (2013)

1. An amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazingly beautiful girl......

2. .... and some okay-ish action in an otherwise a......

3. ..... rubbish film!

4. The man who adopts the hero on earth looks so like cricketer Ian Botham.

5. The hero himself does at time seem to hold facial resemblance to Matt Toomua, a rugby player and Ellyse Perry´s boyfriend.

It was absolute joke of a film except the action sequence.

Big Hero 6 - Story evolves around a gifted Japanese kid who's character is quite similar to Tony Stark(minus cockiness). Overall, a nice animated movie. 7.5/10

12 years a Slave

Cried a bucket. Great performances. Made me want to treasure every moment my life and imagine how fortunate we are to be born and live as free men. Truly deserved the Oscar. A remarkable movie.

Some parts were a little too disturbing. I had to skip them. How did you deal with slave-punishment thing?

I've tried to watch this a couple of times, but everytime I start I switch it off thinking it'll be too disturbing a watch for me and I'll end up going to bed feeling awful. The long run-time always puts me off.

I am well informed on the fact that the intelligence agencies around the world spy people on the Internet, so I am not going to reveal my plans just yet. The good thing about the above film was, I at least realised that there´s every possibility of myself harming Matt´s lookalike.

I have boycotted him completely. I never comment on his Instagram posts, with an exception though, when they announced about their engagement. I just stepped in to say that I am letting this all happen only because Ellyse looks to be happy with him. Let it be a secret that I was only playing cute though, with my plans being different of course.

Once he posted on Instagram about being excited about some rugby game. I mistakenly wished him luck and then immediately deleted my comment after realising what I had just done.

I've seen far worse before, e.g. "The Passion of the Christ". I think it was appropriately portrayed. It didn't feel that they were being exploitative or intentionally trying to gross people out. Far worse happened to the slaves then what was shown in the movie. Any attempts to play down the lashing etc. would have looked unauthentic.

I've tried to watch this a couple of times, but everytime I start I switch it off thinking it'll be too disturbing a watch for me and I'll end up going to bed feeling awful. The long run-time always puts me off.

It's not a fun movie to watch for sure but then was Schindler's list or 21 grams. It's a deeply impactful movie which gives you some idea what slavery in America was like. I watched it last night and the images are still fresh in my mind. It depends on the mood and you never want to watch such movies when you're not ready for them. I remember 21 grams DVD sat on my shelf for a month before I could muster the strength to watch it but boy was it worth it. The art of it all, the direction, acting, story etc. Then the emotional impact, one learns so much about themselves, about life and about the people around you. It moves you, educate you, make you feel human. As for run time, 2:10 is hardly long tbh, most action suspense movies are that long.

Seven Days 2010...

Brutal french revenge thriller which in Hollywood would have turned out to be torture porn as opposed to the social commentary this movie became...very good movie...

The Secret in their Eyes 2009

Good Argentinian flick about a former lawyer turned novelist revisiting an unsolved case...but overrated though with an 8.3 on IMDB...

Evil 2003...

This film was outstanding...makes one realize how awful school is sometimes...film is about how we transform from victims to oppressors within a school setting and the dangers of trying to defy that order...

In the Company of Men 1997

One of the best movies I have seen on doing whatever it takes to climb the corporate ladder...and in Chad one of the most disgraceful villains I have ever seen on screen especially cos there are so many like him in real life...

Selma.

Based on Martin Luther King and his efforts for the black community to be allowed to vote in America.

Good film, with some excellent acting.

10/10

Never tire from watching this masterpiece.

I recently watched it again as well. Greatest movie ever. Martin Scorsese's best work. The movie is simply flawless. From the first scene to the last. The pacing is so well crafted. When the cocaine using and dealing times start in the later part, everything becomes frantic and hyper...quick takes, the soundtrack changes to rock from big band jazz and soul. It's simply brilliant. Everyone remembers DeNiro and Pesci but Ray Liotta gave the performance of a lifetime. A true classic.

Scorsese was disappointed that Liotta didn't get an Oscar nomination. Even Lorraine Bracco did a really good job as the girl who is seduced by the tough but charming guy and his lifestyle only to slowly come to grips with reality. The narration was good and her vulnerability really came through. Paul Sorvino was really good too.

Reportedly, Pesci's real life counterpart was even worse than the sick punk shown in this.

The theory of everything - Decent effort. 7.5/10

Decent effort but I thought it was a tad overrated. The lead actor is amazing and as is the rest of the cast, but I found myself detached and not emotionally involved enough with the characters. Whether that's to do with the pacing or the script, that's another matter, but I didn't feel strongly about this movie at all. Take Birdman for example, I was hooked from the first minute and found myself immersed in the characters.

Kingsman

A solid, lighthearted and entertaining action film. It turns into a bit of a parody in the final 15 minutes, but its enjoyable regardless. The action scene in the church is absolutely breathtaking and worth the admission fee alone. Decent soundtrack too. Definitely recommend this one if you want a decent and fun action flick.

8/10

Selma 8.5 out of 10. Brilliant film with some real emotional scenes. Portrays the brutality of the oppositon to the Civil Rights Movement and the great struggle. and a great performance by the actor who played MLK a fellow Brit.

'Shamitabh' (2015)

A brilliant, fantastic and wonderful..... ending of an otherwise extremely boring and long film. If not for the ending, I was really going to blast this one in my review. In short, not as impressive as the reviews suggests.

Love actually 5/10

It took me over a month to finish this movie. First, i watched about half of it couple of weeks back, then about the 2/3 in the second sitting a couple of days ago and finally i managed to watch the last 30 minutes of it today. For the reason that it was comical and filled with over the top and unreal romance.

May be director was inspired by Bollywood here.

Yes, I agree. I too didn't find a gripping aspect about the movie. It was well made, but wasn't too engaging.

:))) That happened to me with Night Moves. Awful awful movie.

Liotta outshone his more celebrated counterparts. Amazing film.

How many Oscar nominees have you seen yet?

Not many. This and Grand Budapest are the only ones. Surprisingly, I have watched every single nominated animated title.

Just checked the nominees for best picture, "The Imitation Game" seems to be the one I really need to watch.

A Theory of Everything

7.5/10

The lead was incredible in doing justice to stephen hawkings condition. Generally it was a good movie although I was left wanting more.

Would defo recommend it though very inspirational, you might learn at thing or two about resilience and shear determination. Edison was right, Genius is truly just 1%.

It wasn't rubbish, it was god awful. Worst movie in the history of cinema in terms of not doing all the hype justice.

'Batman Begins' (2005)

Not a bad film but was extremely boring overall. There wasn´t much action in it either I felt.

Roy(2015)
Although the reviews aren't good. But still i enjoyed the movie a lot.Its a bit slow but still really nice and enjoyable movie better than typical masala movies.

Hidden.jpg

7/10

A very good action horror flick reminding me of an episode of the X-Files. An FBI agent and a cop team up to take down somebody(or something) which has been wreaking havoc on the streets.

Machlachlan plays an FBI agent much like his most famous role although here he is a bit more kooky.

Slows a bit in the middle but is very inventive, tense and exciting. Recommended.

A morning nightmare !

Today ! I rose at around 7:00 ( can't remember the exact time because the shock was too great) in the morning. I saw the scorecard reading 1/4. Instantly! i rubbed my eyes in amazement to have a clear view at this horrific scorecard . Concentrated hard but still the figures remained the same. There upon i started to figure out whether 1 was the score or the number of wickets fallen, whether 4 belonged to the runs column or wickets fallen.
Then to check the symmetrical location of score and wickets i had to look at the opposing team's total and it read a fearsome 310/6 ! Hence this proved that left side can't be the wickets column. Unbelievable! Indeed 4 wickets had fallen at the total of 1 run.

Badlapur 7.5/10

Loved it. Most of Bollywood films are garbage but this was good. A gripping thriller

hahaa similar reaction. My wife woke me up, and told me about the situation. I pinched my self like two or three time if I was dreaming but I wasn't :(.

The Last Seduction 5/10
A movie on par with Bollywood standards
Jacob' Ladder 5/10
Another film on the aftermath of Vietnam war

'Badlapur' (2015)

A decent film.

It hardly made any sense to me though why the killer was shown to have transformed into a good person so suddenly at the end. I would have ideally shown that he had become a good person during his years in the prison itself but then the hero wasn´t ready to move on.

The wedding ringer. One of the funnier movies in recent times. Very enjoyable.

I think Nawaz was not a 'bad' person per se...but victim of his circumstance. I thin the important dialogue was when he asks Varun...he did whatever he did when he was in heat of the moment during the chase..and was not thinking...and while Varun did what he did by complete planning with a cold mind and planning which is much more scary and asks him to visit a doctor

'Roy' (2015)

I didn´t feel as frustrated about the film as many people might have - as the reviews suggest anyway - as only 20 minutes into the film I realised that it has no pace or anything, so I lowered the volume and started to talk to my family.

So will it be unfair on my part to hand out a negative review? Erm,.... not quite as I concentrated hard every fifth minute but yawned each time.

watched two movies last night.

roy
2.5/10

boring, slow and i dont know what the script writer was thinking.

whiplash (2014)

8/10
nicely made movie. although a bit slow as well but the actors performances make you glue to it.
j.k. simmons has done justice to his role.

Badlapur 4.5/10

The movie had an ok script but the cast was not suited to it mainly Varun didn't impressed as a serious actor. This script was tailor made for Sunny Deol or Sunil Shetty in their prime :))

Sunny Paaji would have uprooted some water pump..and killed everybody involved..and movie would have completed in 20 minutes. LOL.

John wick : 9/10 : Damn good movie. The story is about an an ex-assassin who returns to the underworld and takes on the Russian Mafia.

'Shutter Island' (2010)

Wow, what a stunningly brilliant film! Not boring even for a minute and kept me on my toes throughout! 10 of 10 for the film overall and exactly as many for Leonardo DiCaprio for an awesome performance!

Before the last 15 minutes began, the review in my thoughts went a bit like this..... *Posted in the spoiler*......

"Great film! Brilliantly highlights how cheap humans can be at times and how cruel they can be on one another. Pretty much shows how low we can fall. Extremely disturbing, sad and frustrating because of what innocent people have to go through."

But then, after the ending, I was left to laugh at myself and to admire this masterpiece. I thought it was a bit similar to 'Momento' (2000) in a sense considering the ending.

The IMDB summary goes like:

"In 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding near-by."

Well, there is not even a percent of truth to this if you see the ending.

Watched this one yesterday again. I was able to understand a lot more things given that I knew what the ending was going to be - and even laughed at a few things seeing that it was all a....

A masterpiece!

It definitely did. A lot of movies would have been inspired by Se7en

Yep, it was kinda ahead of it's time many movies have imitated aspects of it glad to have watched the original and first of it's kind. Se7en is one of the greatest movies ever made given it's versatility, a horror, drama, thriller and mystery all in one.

I'd have given Se7en 10/10 Leathers
They probably made Mills too cocky at the start but I suppose I can't find much flaws with it. I give 10 to very few movies which really change the way I feel even if for a brief period of time. They really leave an impact. I suppose if I watch it one more time, I could bump it up. But 9 is still a great rating.

And Saw was inspired by Se7en and to an extent, Vincenzo Natali's highly underrated Cube. Cube was even more tricky though.
You rarely see movies like that these days

Name your 10/10 movies besides Goodfellas.

fair enough leathers, my rating is boosted by the lack of quality since its release :)) so it makes me appreciate it more but you're right 10/10 has to give you feels.

Finally saw PK yesterday and now I understand why Indian's are burning theaters over it. It does raise some good questions about religion and how we follow it blindly without learning more about them and how its used as a way to make money. Still an OK movie I would give it 6/10, would have been a 7 if not for the horrible lip job.

^^^ Burning Theatres huh? Dude it Made 650 Crores World Wide ! 380 Crores from India alone. One of the highest or may be the highest collected movie in India. Few random stray incidents should not make you say ' Indians are burning theatres' !

So the festival of Holi is coming, and I get to hear that song "range barse" by Amitabh Bachchan again. What a shame that such a vulgar song has become the Holi anthem, and features the Big B. This song glorifies extra marital affairs and shame to see it was not banned.

What was the last film you watched? ('Shutter Island' 2010)

Watching second time is not that fun , but clearly a masterpiece :)

My mistake was, I least expected my sister to be interested in such a film and had back then already related the ending, but she was as I this time around watched it with her. I spoiled a bit of her fun as well.
