From up on Poppy Hill - 7/10
tt1798188.jpg

A group of Yokohama teens look to save their school's clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

If you liked that them, then watch: Spirited Away (10/10), Howls Moving Castle (10/10) and Arriety (10/10). Fantastic animated movies from Japan.

Is Elysium as good as District 9?

Also Ashton Kutcher is Steve Jobs. Lol.

watched The Reluctant Fundamentalist mainly for the soundtrack - worked great. Atif Aslam did a good job. The acting was good too. I read someone post that Kate Hudson did a shabby job but that's not true at all, she was as good as she needed to be. Character development was a bit restrained for her character though and she came across as a hollow person.

Was going through the thread and came across the great gatsby! Brilliant.movie thanks guys, was right up my street. Seriously how on earth has leonardo not one an oscar yet? He may well be considered amongst the best of his generation. 7.7/10, the movie was produced and directed really well the one thing which they could have improved was going in to mr gatsbys other life in more detail and how he attained his wealth

Are there any movies out there which are similar to the great gatsby? What do you guys suggest, thanks

Pain and Gain -6/10 was ok but the fact that they tried to turn real murders (based on true story )into a comedy is not on .
Now you see us -8/10 pretty good

PoliceGiri

A Sanjay Dutt typical bollywood potboiler.

One man army in Sanjay Dutt who plays deputy commissioner of Police and is a police cum goon at the same time.

4 / 10

Moonrise Kingdom 8/10

One of Wes Anderson's best.

Fantastic Mr. Fox 7.5/10

Weird animated version of Roald Dahl's classic, but Wes Anderson puts his own spin on it. It was quite entertaining.

The Aviator

I've watched most of leonardo's movies, and the aviator was incredible i loved it more since i am trying to get into the aviation industry. That movie is the best aviation movie ever, from the business side of things to design engineering to flying it had it all. Howard hughes really was a real life Iron Man back in his day

The Aviator

A future classic. To me, the best movie of the last decade with ''There will be blood'' and ''Prestige''.

I loved it..and thanks..I'll check them out:)

Check out Grave of the Fireflies its one of the best animated movies I've ever seen.

Also check out My Neighbour Totoro

Other less good ones are ''The Wolf Children'' ''The Girl who leapt through time'' ''Nausicäa'' and ''Akira'''.

But the absolute best, I would say:

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
5cm per second
My Neighbour Totoro
Grave of the Fireflies

It was reported in Media today that "Chennai Express" has broken all previous records

It left behind 3 idiotz as well :O

What's wrong with it? It's not like a huge and shitty blockbuster has replaced an awesome indie film, they are both the same kind of movie approx of equal quality.

What has this world come to, people need to get their head checked if they think that was a quality bollywood movie

To be fair we cannot blame Indians only for success of Chennai Express, this movies did well all over the world including Pakistan.

Does that thing even exist :gul

haha not really to be honest over the last few years everything has been baqwaas besides My name is khan, Rab ne banadi jodi, Don 2, 3 Idiots and Wanted (not the one with angelina jolie in it lol). Had high hopes for jab tak hai jaan and even that turned out to be rubbish.

And i also would like to apologise to everyone for the success of chennai express, i purchased a ticket to watch it in the cinema.....should have read those reviews!!.....I never watch bollywood movies these days unless sharukhan is featuring in them and in this case i thought chennai would be okay considering his chemistry with deepika but he has lost my respect a bit with the last two movies he has made.....why would you take those scripts actually i'll let him off for working with yash chopra but seriously chennai expresss? what the hell guys.....Never underestimate the power of a common man LOL LOL LOL LOL

To be honest Chennai Express was very entertaining as a pure comedy. And I think most people watch movies to get there mind of work, stress, etc. And Chennai Express does that job really well. So, no surprise really that it has been a huge success on the BO.

Yeah it's one of those movies that supposed to be for a few laughs nothing more .

Youre next...8.5...awesome movie!
Kick ass 2...5...the first part was awesome..this one not so much!

The hunt(Danish Drama movie) 8/10

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

It was my very first non English movie and it turned out to be a great one. Acting was just excellent so was the story and cinematography.

brilliant movie..acting is top notch.

Moulin Rouge! (2001) 8/10, absolute gold is there anything baz lurhmann can not do, i don't particularly enjoy musicals but this was spectacular a very innovative must see movie

Sucks having to wait 6 months after a movie is released to be able to watch it on DVD/online stream since the Pakistani censor board completely ruins everything playing in movie theaters with the their ridiculous censorship policy.

Iron man 3 and Now you see me, both were pretty good and now you see me was awesome..

Yesterday, I watched a film after a long duration as I hardly ever view movies. Watching it after 3 years (I last watched in one of my Year 9 English classes as the English teacher had at the time virtually allowed us to watch a film every lesson), I was encapsulated by the film Saving Private Ryan.

Set in the heart of WW2 (specifically the D-Day Landings), a rescue party is sent out to search for a man named Private Ryan and given specific instructions to try to return him back home (the reasons of which I will not reveal here, in order for the film's storyline to remain secret). Personally, I'd award this film an 8/10 for its brilliant cinematic presence, its graphic depiction of the horrors of the war and some great acting by the cast involved. However, a few criticisms of the film include the fact that some of the words spoken in scenes are truly indecipherable (which I don't think is the result of a bad link/stream) and also the fact that not information is given to the audience on the soldiers' backgrounds (which doesn't fully allow you to bond with the characters and understand their plight). Though a great film nevertheless.

SPR was ok but can't hold a candle to the best war film ever made. Thin Red Line.

Ryan is alright. It never quite lives up to its opening half an hour though, which is genuinely brilliant and has been praised as frame-by-frame realism by many veterans. The film is one of Spielberg's very best moments as director, but the writing is flawed to me. There have also been legitimate complaints about the complete lack of attention shown by the film to the equally brave and important Canadian and British forces, who took 3 beaches of their own, and the problematic ethical message it sends that 1 life can be worth the trading in of dozens of others. Although I believe the film is loosely based on true events, which I found very surprising.

Elysium

Another gem from Neil Blomkamp. Sharlto Copley is superb. The action and visual are stunning. Add to that a brilliant soundtrack.

9/10

Die Hard 5.. Really disappointed with it.. Dint expect they could damage the value of die hard series in such a way..:(

3.5/10

Saw it, loved it. Don't know why some people are criticizing it.
Lack of character development especially given the big names. I felt no emotional attachment to any of them. It's still a great movie if you can look beyond that though...

Personally, as stated before, Saving Private Ryan's storyline was a little wafer-thin and there remains no emotional attachment to this film. Rather, I believe it just seems to be a film depicting the brutality of war but doesn't focus on emotions of soldiers and how war can affect someone mentally.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Although I hardly watch films, I hope I'll be able to watch it. It sounds pretty decent.

Elysium was a bit of a let down given the hype. Most of the movie isn't even in elysium.
Jodie Foster was awful but Damon was good and the saffer guy from district 9 was really good.

Decent movie but not as good as the hype

7/10 for me

I usually don't watch Bollywood movies (other than Shah Rukh, Aamir Khan movies) and finally watched Chennai Express after so much hype. It was just OK movie, there were funny parts here and there but i expected SRK to do a much better movie than this. Story made absolutely no sense and comedy at times was quite lame and Shah Rukh really had to try extra hard to make some scenes entertaining.

I wouldn't give it more than 6/10, 3 idiots was WAY better movie.

there's no competition..chennai express su-cks!

Now You See Me- 7/10 - Better than i expected. A few Good twists.

Star Trek Into the Darkness- 8/10 - Better than the 1st one IMO.

Iron Man 3 - 6/10 - Bit of a let down, still a decent action flick.

Agreed, 3 idiots was on a completely different level.

You are Next.

Was at the mall earlier with a friend and decided to catch this flick. We happened to be the only two people in the theatre and that added to the effect. A very good movie. One of the best ones, in its genre. A must watch if you fancy such movies.

2 Guns

A moderate action/comedy film starring wahlberg and washington. A leave your "brains at home" movie, the two stars make the film especially wahlberg who is surprisingly very good

The chemistry and witty banter between the pair is exceptional but the plot and action is unspectacular and unmemorable

5/10

Life of PI

Starring S Sharma and I khan, this drama about a shipwrecked indian boy with a tiger for company is entertaining and spectacular Vividly told by ang lee he potrays the film beautifully and will leave the viewer with an overwhelming feeling

9/10

Jack reacher

A crime thriller starring T Cruise, this was a puzzling film which i'm not sure what to make off
The story starts brightly and the plot is decent with some good sequences however the film really never gets going and is slow and over long in parts

Cruise is decent and herzog as the villain very good but the film leaves a feeling that something was missing

Decent but couldve been a lot better

7/10

I totally agree; the graphic depiction of the horrors of World War 2 are exquisitely portrayed in the beginning scene. However, what I believe it lacks was the feeling that this was WW2 - it seemed to be too modern to fully convey across the true image of WW2. Maybe the reason for this is the employment of famous actors but even if they were removed and replaced by less well-known actors, I still doubt whether the film would be conveyed across as a completely realistic painting of WW2 for it just lacks something - maybe some appropriate dialogue/an adequate storyline and background for the characters (in order for some emotional attachment to the characters to occur) and in my opinion, it progresses too quickly. To conclude, I believe there is no definitive and strong plot-line to the film.

There have also been legitimate complaints about the complete lack of attention shown by the film to the equally brave and important Canadian and British forces, who took 3 beaches of their own, and the problematic ethical message it sends that 1 life can be worth the trading in of dozens of others.

Regarding the first point, I slightly disagree. Although it is indeed true that the film lacks in focusing upon the achievements of the Canadian and British forces in the battle for the Normandy beaches, I have to state that in my opinion this does not result in a major problem. The reason for this is because the film doesn't serve as a lesson on the history of the D-Day Landings, rather it primarily draws attention to the fact that governments aren't merciless killing machines (evident with the way the US Chief Of Staff orders his minions to dispatch a search party to locate and return Private Ryan to his mother, thus suggesting that emotions do sometimes take preference during war). Similarly, instances of German and American forces sharing cigarettes and discussing topics cordially are even included in the film, showing that war doesn't necessarily two groups have to be enemies.

In addition, although the film does highlight the efforts of American soldiers whilst omitting the similar, wholesome efforts of other Allied forces, I believe it doesn't do so with negative intentions.

Regarding the point you made concerning the message it provides about how saving a solitary life can be worth the death of numerous others, I generally agree. However, what must be considered is the fact that the task was portrayed in a positive light, arguing that the mission was acceptable because of the fact that on the way they would be eradicating Nazi forces and thus decreasing the strength of the German's Army. Furthermore, one must also remember that throughout the film, on various occasions it is mentioned that by saving this one life would mean something good would come out of the war and that the party would be able to justifiably declare that they have earned the right to return back to their families. Despite believing that this could pose problems in terms of ethics (which you have mentioned), I also propose the theory that by saving this one life they are actually preventing the loss of more lives - both German and American - and are committing an act which could be perceived to be virtuous and honourable.

Although I believe the film is loosely based on true events, which I found very surprising.

Is it really? That is most unexpected actually. Does that mean that during the war soldiers were sent back home if all of their brothers had been KIA'd?

Snitch 7/10

A father goes undercover for the DEA in order to free his son who was imprisoned after being set up in drug deal.

An very enjoyable action flick I liked it.

Watched Madras Cafe last night. A very good movie, in all aspects. John Abraham must be applauded for coming up with such "sensible" cinema and producing the films he believes even if they are not usual Bollywood stuff. Glad to see the film doing so well commercially and critically.

Maybe the whole point is that there is no storyline. It was a real war after all, fought by real people.

The Ryan scenario was certainly not the norm, IMO rightly so, and the surviving Ryan in the film feels this way too - he doesn't want to leave his platoon. But apparently there were a few exceptions made here and there.

The Best Offer 9/10

An absolutely outstanding movie that will keep you hooked from star to finish. A must watch.

Monsters University.. great movie..8/10..
Monster-University-Poster.jpg

The plot involves Mike trying to become a 'scaring major'—something quite unthinkable since he isn't the least bit scary.
