Black Panther

It was a good movie and has received a lot of hype. But a lot of the hype is related to the fact that we have a black super hero.

If you strip that from the movie it's still a good watch but just a bit more than average. The premise of the movie is nothing we haven't heard of or seen before. An unknown world where inhabitants are far ahead technologically/spiritually than the rest of the world... So in that sense I won't give credits for creativity because it was exactly expected (I do understand they are limited by the comic book)

Someone said that the prior marvel movies had some tie in to the story here so perhaps I missed a bit there

But overall it's a nice watch but nowhere near the hype

6.5/10

I haven't watched it yet but had been nauseated by its overblown hype. The "All black movie" label is so racist in my opinion. It's as if no black person has been allowed to work in Hollywoood before.

It's as if no black director has made a major movie before. Has everyone forgotten last years Oscar for best movie 'Moonlight' director Barry Jenkins or Steve McQueen who also directed the Oscar winning '12 years a slave' few years back.

As for leading man being black. Give me a break. Its like Will Smith or Denzel Washington have never existed. As if Viola Davis has never been acknowledged before.

What took the cake for me was when a hostess of the TV show "The View" told actor Chadwick Boseman who plays the lead in Black Panther, how it was an honor to watch the movie. An honor to watch a Marvel movie. Lol. Is this for real. Has the anti-Trump emotionality have so disturbed liberals that they can't distinguish between a comercially made movie made by a major studio from some kind of mammoth revolutionary movement in black history.

Just aghast at how silly our whole politically charged culture has become.

I see where you guys are coming from but the hype stems from Black Panther being the first Black super hero from the comics to finally get a live action movie under a mainstream / established platform rather then being a first across any genre for black people, black actor / director or movies but more specific to the super hero genre. Having said that the movie quality was average, Luke Cage was way better although it was a TV series and the character itself was written just after BP.

Black Panther

My personal enjoyment rating: 8/10 it was a nice little popcorn flick

Actual movie quality: Probably a 6.5 or 7 out of 10

You got to give Marvel so much credit, their execution of one dimensional narratives are masterful

Speaking of these movies, anyone else getting sick of them. Talk about over kill. Wont be watching any until the Scorcee's Joker effort or Matt Reeves Batman. If there is a gritty release like Logan will watch it; otherwise had enough of Marvel

Are you not interested in seeing Venom?I'm surprisingly excited about the summer Infitiy wars,Deadpool 2,Ant man.

I see what you did there, Hancock was reading every sentence carefully.

Watched Unforgiven ..... again.
What a movie , What an acting by all the leads!
Clint Eastwood at his finest.

This is one am looking forward to more then the others which I may not even watch, it's not classified as a part of the MCU as well. What's interesting is that spidey won't be in the movie, but having watched the trailer we can see the direction the movie will take; Venom may be seen as a villain but at times has been a bit of a anti-hero who blurs the line and his origins were very unfortunate so they can play that up

Three Billboards.

Good drama but overrated. Defo not oscar worthy material.

Just watched Thor Ragnarok. Man that was one heck of a gem. The humor was brilliant & cate blanchett was very good as villain.

I thought hulk was the strongest avenger but man thor just took it to another level. Can't wait to see him in infinity wars.

Watched Black Panther the other day. Decent movie but a bit overrated IMO

Looper and The Grand Budapest Hotel this past weekend.

Honestly thought former was better than overrated Inception. Has a really cool concept which I think was done really well.

Watched a film called Hichki - a Bollywood film starring Rani Mukherjee about a teacher with Tourette Syndrome and how she overcomes it to teach a class of very difficult students. Easy to watch, not bad although it went on a bit too long I felt 7/10.

It was a pretty good movie to be fair recall enjoying it in the cinema, Inception is a bit overly rated. Will have to see the two again to compare them.

A QUIET PLACE

9/10

Who knew Jim Halpert from the Office could craft one of the best horror films ever? The film starts with a bang and never lets up. It focuses on the characters and never loses sight of them for cheap scares. For a PG-13 horror movie, this is incredibly intense. Very little dialogue so you have to pay attention and the film is compelling enough to make you do that.

Looper is underrated no doubt but
Inception is more intriguing and offers unique hiest movie experience with mind bending premise.that's why it is rated highly.

Really not that mind bending. It’s the same concept repeated throughout the movie. Interstellar is the movie with the mind bending premise.

A Quiet Place

Was really looking forward to watching this horror film. It was a huge disappointment.

Story line was interesting but the acting poor and the film was rather dull

4/10

A Quiet Place. 9/10, loved it. Went in with low expectations, had low expectations when I saw the trailer as well earlier. Thought John was new on the scene as director so I'd go in with an open mind, but it was a great watch. Entire cinema went quiet in anticipation of the suspense, people were just holding popcorn in hand with mouth open, as if they were in the same world and had to stay quiet.

Two contrasting posts on the same movie, interesting. :misbah4

Step-brothers

Around 10 years old but really funny.

Will Ferrell at his best.

8/10.

Isle of Dogs

Wes Anderson’s second foray into stop motion animation. I love “Fantastic Mr.Fox” and before the ”Grand Budapest Hotel” it was my favorite Wes Anderson movie.

It’s a dystopian tale set in futuristic Japan which is ruled by a 1984 style totalitarian regime. A mayor named Kobayashi has banished all the dogs of the country to a trash island. One boy however bravely makes his way to the island to find his lost dog and in turn ends up meeting a cast of other dogs voiced by some great character actors and Anderson usuals.

Without going much into the plot, a fight ensues between those who want to keep the dogs away and those who want dogs to come back to mainland Japan. In the process, we witness Anderson’s mastery and vision, his nerdy diligence interspersed with some extremely tender and touching scenes between the boy and his dog. Truly a man’s best friend.

The decision to not put subtitles for the Japanese speaking characters is an interesting one but I tend to favor Anderson’s approach. We are watching the movie from a dogs perspective and since dogs have no clue what humans say to them why should we be privy to that. Perhaps the best line of the movie is delivered when a dog on the island asks his fellow dogs after the boy said something very passionately in Japenese “I wish somebody spoke his language”.

As much as I admire the quirky realism of Anderson, his craftsmanship and the attention to detail, part of a meticulous process Anderson and his team went though in making this feature, the movie stopped short of making a permanent impression on me.

All in all, recommend it to all Anderson’s fans, anime fans and cinephiles. This movie is a piece of art one cannot help but admire even if not enjoy as much as his last effort.

Avengers Infinity Wars

A truly special film. Some of the best action I have ever seen in any film/TV show. The set pieces seemed like they were from a video game. Totally unreal. Loved the witty dialogues as well. The film has a sense of desperation around it due to the plot and how the avengers are under an actual threat because of a compelling villian (finally). The score is amazing and works well with the tone of the film.

Infinity war - 9/10,
I will say that this movie is inspired by Empire strikes back, no beginning and no truly ending, movie finishes with a cliffhanger.
Thanos might be the best live action villain in comic book series, never taught anybody can beat Killgrave ( Jessica jones) , Fisk( daredevil) or Nicholson ( batman movie) performances.

Infinity wars was okay for me, I had a good time but wasn't great. Most of the characters I like got little screen time. Granted I'm not really a comic fan.

Thor was great in this film, when he arrived on Earth I had a genuine epic feeling like when I watched Lord of the Rings as a kid, paring him with Rocket was a great idea

Thanos was also a good villian

Dissapointed that Loki died so quick, for me he was once of the few characters in the MCU that had proper dept. I expected him to go, but it should have been a bigger send off. Probably give it a 7/10

Also annoyed Captain America and Blank Panther didnt have more to do, but with the former I expect he will have a bigger part in the next film ( also think he will die )

Nicky Fury cameo was perfect

For me the best marvel movies remain in no specific order: Winter Soilder, Black Panther, Thor Ragnarok and Civil War.

He was good, but I think he is made better because the MCU has been awful with Villians. Only real competition he has is with Kilmonger who got one film and Loki who is more of a antihero

All comic book movies included though surely Heath Ledgers Joker is the best>

For me the top 5 are

Winter Soldier
Civil War
Avengers
Infinity War
Black Panther

Guardians Of The Galaxy was also good

Infinity War was 8.5/10.

IMO the Defenders should have been given a cameo.

Infinity wars was fantastic. Considering going to the cinema again to watch it.

All-action and your always glued to the screen. Can't wait for the next one.

9/10

Infinity War.

Started off on a dark & sombre note. Then the tone shifted back & forth in the middle. Some ‘jokes’ were placed at the wrong time- like they had time to make a not so funny beard joke in the middle of a epic fight? Ok. I felt the main heroes were somewhat underpowered compared to previous movies. Thanos is a beast though. 7/10

Apart from Iron Man 1 & Winter Soldier, most MCU movies are overrated.

I think I’m a pretty generous movie critic but this new Avengers movie was surprisingly boring and lacking in action. 10 years in the making... yet so many bore scenes like the one in the ship with Thor and the others, the final fights were nothing to write home about either.

Also maybe it’s just me but Thanos seemed seriously nerfed.

6/10, 7 at best.

Watched Oldboy (2003) last week and what an emotional rollercoaster it was. It's actually adapted from a Japanese manga but it seems like it's enhanced the source material.

The subtle changes of scenery and music with the mood, the dialogue, the pacing and the stunning twists at the end are all examples of a director who pays attention to detail in a superbly crafted film and script.

The acting from the main protagonist is remarkable as we witness his transformation from drunken oaf to revenge filled *** kicker full of questions and soul searching after 15 years of imprisonment.

The twists at the end...what a kick to the gut it is but such cruel irony. The only complaint is that the violence and bloodletting became excessive but it doesn't detract from a classic. There's an English dub but it detracts from the emotion of watching in the original Korean - subtitles are adequate to follow along. This gets a 9.5/10.

It is part of trilogy of movies based on revenge called vengeance trilogy directed by the genius park chan wook. All of them are extremely violent & have lot of twists.

Oldboy is the most popular one but you should give the others a watch too especially the third part of the trilogy "Lady vengeance" in which the protagonist of oldboy is the villain.

Solo was just garbage an absolute bore fest. Out of the recent ones Infinity War and Deadpool 2 were pretty good for mine.

Hereditary

9/10

Aside from an unnecessary scene at the end where they lay everything out like the psychiatrist scene form Psycho, the movie is one of the best horror movies I have seen. I love slow burn and this one creeps up on you and then explodes. Toni Collette deserves an oscar for her phenomenal performance. It has some surprises up its sleeve and I admire the restraint in not going for cheap jump scares.

I slept just 10 mins in it, therefore I declare Jurassic World a good movie!

Agree with the review and wouldn't go lower then an 8.5, what did you make of the finishing stretch ? It was a little incoherent but the open ended nature may have been intentional; especially how Charlie was so oblivious to the King Paimons spirit.

oh man i can't believe we wasted 2 hours on this rubbish...
It was so bad that we felt we had to see a second film just so that our Saturday evening didn't feel like a complete write off!

So we saw Deadpool 2 which was extremely funny and almost on par with the first film..

But Jurassic World 2, what a completely pathetic film!!!

Haven't seen any if the new Jurrasic Parks, have the original on VHS lol remember as a kid being in awe seeing it on the telly. Will need to see them all again before giving the modern ones a look

Loved the finishing stretch because it refused to go for cheap scares. I loved how they made it seem non-supernatural until the very end. The ending pretty much concluded things for me. It does not need a sequel. You mean Peter? Because I think Paimon took over Peter.

Traffic (2000) - a film about the War on Drugs.

The switching between four different plots is jarring at first but the director manages to weave them together into one interconnected story.

Without being too preachy the film highlights the futility of the drug war and how the law paradoxically is making the drug trade even more profitable. We see how even law enforcement in Mexico are infiltrated by the cartels and their disregard towards treating addicts as people with a health problem than a criminal problem.

7/10.

Get Out - it's a film I appreciate more once I noticed the small details and subtle references (the black SUVs, the importance of the Jesse Owens reference etc) the director makes throughout the film.

Well worth watching the excellent YouTube video where Jordan Peele discusses Reddit fan theories for more on this - his attention to detail is fantastic for a first time director.

The acting is solid (the TSA guy has terrific comedic timing) and whilst the twist was somewhat predictable, this horror film gets a 7.5/10.

The latest Planet of the Apes.

Better than the previous one, but still went on a bit.

Time to end these films now.

5/10.

Very good movie. I myself don't watch horror that often but this is a beautiful film.

Basically that King Paimon demon was inside of Charlie all along right ? but she somehow didn't know it even up until the very end where Peter had a look of confusion on his face while he was being worshipped (At this point the Demon / Charlie had possessed Peter), I suppose Charlie's strange behaviour early on makes a lot more sense now though.

SPOILERS (for others)

Yeah the mother Annie did not let the granny near Peter but she was guilted into letting her near Charlie. I guess the granny nursed Charlie and the demon went in her. But the demon needed a male body as per the mythology and could not reach full potential. At the end, that demon was put in Peter's body and the cult's work was complete.

Black Panther. So overrated. Some of the acting is terrible.

Jurassic World- terrible movie...the whole movie takes place in a mansion! Just a filler movie.

I watched Jurassic World:Fallen Kingdom last week.

Not as good as it's prequel and definitely no match for Jurassic Park 1.

The visuals were good and main characters(Owen,Claire, that computer guy) were OK.A few scenes were deep. The plot twist near the end was interesting.

But there were a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies.A plotline was rehashed from JW 1.The main human villiain was underwhelming.Overall a middling film.

I would give it a 6/10.

Finished Ocean's 11 trilogy. Loved it, probably the only trilogy other than Bourne Identity that I enjoyed start to finish.

Ocean's 12 was more jokey, but I liked how they reintroduced the high stakes Ocean's 13.

Donal Cozzie I know you were a big fan of the original Sicario like me, have you watched the sequel yet?

The sequel had a similar thrilling pace, beautifully shot and retained the same dark and eerie atmosphere which emphasised how real and bleak the world they created is. The narrative and action delivered once again but they let themselves down big time with the finishing stretch though, not a fan of leaving your audience hanging to squeeze another movie which could still have been released but not at the expense of an anti-climatic ending. Still would give it an 8 or 8.5 out of 10 though.

Captain America: civil war. I think this movie is very overrated. I found it silly. Superheroes were joking around as they fought each other, no sense of danger or seriousness at all. It was kinda pointless, it seemed like they just wanted to do the civil war story line. The villain wasn't very good either. The end was kind of lame, nothing really happened. In the end no one died. it was Less like a war and more like a backyard fight. I would it's a decent movie but nothing special. 6.5/10.

Blade Runner 2039.

Dragged on a bit. Confusing, but excellent special effects.

5/10

Nah, loved the ending, loved the film, was a perfect sequel.

Have watched that, Nightcrawler, and Das leben von Anderen lately, all magnificent.

Gonna film binge the summer screw it why not

A 1988 cult classic known as “The Beast” or “The Beast of War”. It has Steven Bauer (Manny from Scarface) as the central character, Taj, who is trying to destroy a Soviet tank operated by four soldiers.

The film was surprisingly not cheesy and had a very memorable ending with some funny dialogues in between.

It captures the rather inhuman essence of war and how it is forced upon the youth due to the bitterness of the old, continuing the cycle of hatred and destruction.

I would give it a rating of 6.5/10 as it was a good time-pass movie with a few hearty kicks.

I felt Nightcrawler was severely overrated.

(The Jake Gyllenhall one)

After going almost a year without watching a movie, watched four yesterday lol.

Baywatch (2017) 5/10

The Stepfather (1987) 6.5/10

Dirty Grandpa (2016) 4/10

Cutting Class (1989) 4/10

I watched so much trash

^ lol. I watched the big sick yesterday. Very good movie. It was funny without trying to be funny and the romance aspect of the movie was very good. Romance was very different from other romantic comedies, especially because of the second act of the movie-which brings an emotional dept to the movie that most other such movies do not have. The chemistry between the characters was amazing. The side characters were also very good. Overall a very solid movie. 8.5/10

Jumanji 2

It was fun and easy to watch with a modern twist - but nowhere near as good as the original one which was a classic.

6/10

Prince of Persia - sand of time
- 7/10. entertaining watch. Chemistry between jack Gyllenhaal and gemma Arterton was great. Action scenes were average but I liked the plot and movie was visually stunning.

October.

I thought the film was okay. Varun dhawan acted well. I can understand if people didnt like it because of its slow pace but i dont think it was bad.

Saw PTA's Boogie Nights again.

Amazing ensemble cast, cinematography, story arc and the best soundtracks ever. Its funny as hell but also has some really dark, disturbing and violent moments. Mark Walberg is so underrated, he was brilliant in the movie. In just his second feature movie, PTA's command over the subject matter is so confident and self assured, you can tell this guy is going to be a legend.

Watched Tom Cruise's American Made which wasnt a good movie at all. Its based on a true story being a mule for Escobar. 4/10
