Why do Pakistan cricket fans mock terms like “Intent” and “Modern day cricket”?

Are Player PR companies, blind fans and journalists forcing us to play an anchor in T20 even though we don’t need one?

It should be mocked and for the right reason.

Words like “intent” “modern day cricket” “structure” “system” is the most often used and abused word among the Pak cricket community.

Not that it’s not important or the other teams don’t focus on it but with Pak cricket it’s often overused and abused that when the fans see the dichotomy on the Tv screens with their teams approach, they are going to mock it. Pakistanis are the kings/queens of self-deprecating humor as we hear all the time .👍.

Also when some tulla hacks are even recommended for captaincy for a couple of random slogs while consistent, hardworking and strong temperament players are mocked as tuktuk etc then the joke writes itself.

I feel SAD when looking at some of these current lot
In a good side, someone with an avg of 25 and SR of 128 like Farhan would never be celebrated because he hit 2 chikkay. In T20 cricket you have

High average high SR (true elites) like Chris Gayle/Head
High average good SR (classy) like King and Kaptaana
High average poor SR
High SR poor average
Poor SR Poor Avg like Farhan

Haters of Bobsy and Rizzy are always complaining that they aren't in the elite class of T20 average of batters which I can understand especially for Rizzy as he is a wicket keeper but then to trumpet a failure like Farhan is unfortunate who has poor SR AND poor average is unfortunate.

For our sake I hope he comes good and his recent performances have been ok.

I can see the debate on Babar because he is an anchor batsman. There is maybe 1 place for such a batsman in the T20 side in every team. Pak seems to have a factory of such batsmen. Having said that Babar is probably the most premium product from the factory; he is a Ferrari in that context to the rest who are Toyotas at best. Right now he is indispensable but there is always a alternative.

With Rizwan it’s a different case; there is no keeper-bat in Pak in the same stratosphere. How is this guys place in jeopardy is beyond me.

Our wicketkeepers after Rizwan are:

Azam Khan...won't even dignify it with a response
Usman Khan....UAE reject tullar not fit to tie Rizwan's shoelaces
Mo Harris....most promising of the lot but turned out to be a UAE/Oman basher

We have no choice but to go back to Rizwan. Pak needs Rizwan more than Rizwan needs Pak. If Rizwan retires today, he can make a better living playing T20 leagues all around the world. In BBL there is a massive craze for Rizwan. Pak will be left with duds like Azam and Usman who will score 5(2) and fumble 50 times in one innings.

It's likes you speak my mind :ik

“Mohammad Rizwan so far in the BBL 2025-26 :

- 4 (10)
- 32 (26)
- 16 (12)
- 6 (10)
- 41 (38)

Intent master has a strike rate of 103.12 which is lowest for any batter in this edition with minimum 50 balls faced. Bro is a perfect example of playing ODI's in T20's. What a rare talent🫡

@topspin is it no surprise that the guys here who adamantly oppose the terms ‘intent’ and ‘modern day cricket’ are hardcore Rizwan fans?

Babar is showing a lot of intent with Sydney. Overall SR is a bit misleading because he has played according to the situation and won 2 matches for his side. King is back.

More Duck King Babar stay at the crease more chance of apposition team of winning. :klopp :kp

Please tell me what are Farhan, Fakhar, Salman and Usman Khan's average and strike rate compared to Babar Azam's in T20Is.

Do they score at double the speed and score runs consistently.

Thanks!

@BouncerGuy aakhir masla kya hai? Why are you guys, Amir Sohail+Ramiz Raja so against Intent? Why do you people think it doesn’t have a place in T20?

Things that will never be culturally accepted in countries:

Afghanistan: Women being allowed to openly manoeuvre in society

India: Pakistan and its people to be viewed as decent human beings

Pakistan: Batsmen who wish to put the team first and play fearlessly with intent and embrace modern day cricket adaptability.

Stop justifying him based on what others do. He has been downright terrible since his comeback, has got a plethora of ducks too against different opposition so it’s not as if he’s scoring slow only, he’s not even scoring those soft runs anymore.

Stop this agenda based rubbish, Pakistan cricket is bigger than this fraud.

He has a customery wasting of 10 balls to settle in as well these days

Who is stopping Pakistan players to show intent , Australia series is coming ideal time to show your intent
:yk3

Buzzwords like Intent and Modern cricket look good when you have actual talent on display.
Some deluded people relate these words with players like Mohd Haris and Sahibzada Farhan who are mediocrities whipping their bats with eyes closed.
I’m convinced t20 cricket requires the highest natural talent. You can’t just fight and stay at the crease, work on your technique to fix deficiencies. Hard work goes a long way in longer formats like tests. Most of the time it’s too late to change these players once they’re playing domestic at an adult level.

Sport in general has changed not just cricket. Natural talent + fitness often is the winning combo these days.

It is very difficult to learn to hit hard early on at the crease. It requires natural hand eye coordination and strength. And hitting the ball with proper cricketing shots and footwork. Not blind slogging. And you can’t just sit around and play yourself in to the extent you can in longer formats.

The mistakes are probably made in youth cricket. The guys who have that power and hand eye coordination tend to disregard technique, footwork etc. And the guys who don’t veer the other way and focus on generating runs without a power game. Thus you get incomplete players when they actually step into international cricket.

Watching Sharjeel made me realise this somewhat. He’s one of the few Pakistani players who was comfortable hitting at the start. Didn’t looked like forced blind swings. But lack of footwork, fitness and of course fixing didn’t help. If he had worked hard on those you’d generally have a quality t20 player. But that’s the problem there are guys talented like Sharjeel who do take those other things seriously in foreign teams. Which is why they churn out quality T20 batsmen at a higher rate.

Nafay can fit right in for Babar. He surely can't do worse than Babar.

Agha is fine - no problems with him.

Faheem has been in fine form recently but he is not fitting in due to team balance. Can play a specialist batsman in his place.

Faheem plays at no 8 as a specialist batter, a new norm set by Hesson and Agha

Fans have mocked these terms because stats suggest that it’s all talk, the intent brigade’s numbers are just as poor.

That Hasan is a hit or miss. But that guy can on his day win match. I think he is dropped because he has no secondary skills. Hesson drops anyone who is not multi skilled regardless of whether they are good or not. Abrar , Shufiyan lost hteir way like this. If Usman Tariq fails in 3 matches his future will be written off.

earlier the word used to be agression now it is intent, game awareness and system… this is all to escape accountability and responsibility and nothing else…. They use the word intent to show that they making effort to play shots but not actually to win that moment or little game battle… and it is so easy to say the system is bad , players lack game awareness , coach is not teaching them etc etc …. It’s all nothing just more opportunities for screentime…and they use it even not fully explaining what exactly they mean by it … the other day Amir was explaining difference between power hitter and a slogger … he tried well but somehow it lacked depth but he was class bowler so don’t expect but I m sure not many ppl can actually and properly define the difference between a power hitter and slogger… Amir was mainly the talking about difference in power and ability to come in line and defend something like that …. I think it still needs to be better understood…in my view it is more of role at that position and game situation for eg modern day t20 follows template where batters want to be ultra aggressive at the power play and then in the final 3-4 overs…. So will have batters like that in top and keep such batters for end who can muscle it …. More than slogger and power hitter .. it is role based for initial poweply or final end overs … so the actual question should be will you have a power hitter/slogger at the top or at the end or does it really matter?

'He Himself Doesn't Know What Is Modern Cricket': Ex-Pakistan Captain Slams Coach Mike Hesson

Pakistan's inconsistency once again proved costly in the ongoing T20 World Cup, as Salman Ali Agha's side fell to England in their Super 8 clash on Tuesday. After choosing to bat first, Pakistan managed 164/9 in 20 overs, with Sahibzada Farhan standing out as the lone bright spot with a well-crafted 63 off 45 balls. In response, Pakistan applied early pressure thanks to quick breakthroughs from Shaheen Afridi. However, England's skipper Harry Brook steadied the chase with a superb century, guiding his team to a two-wicket victory and sealing their place in the semi-finals.

Following the defeat, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt strongly criticised head coach Mike Hesson, questioning his reliance on what he called "modern cricket" theories.

"I honestly don't understand the coach's logic," Butt said on his YouTube channel. "Who is picked, who is dropped, who bats where-none of it makes sense. When to bowl someone, when to take them off, match-ups... he's memorised a few non-cricketing terms. He talks about strike rates and modern cricket, but neither he nor anyone else seems to truly understand what modern cricket is."

Butt also questioned Pakistan's lack of power-hitting development. "He keeps mentioning power hitting, but where is it?" Butt added. "What work has been done with these players? Who is actually hitting sixes? Our batters can't seem to play any shot other than towards mid-wicket."

He further criticised the team's preparation leading up to the tournament, pointing out that Pakistan's recent home series did not prepare them for international conditions.

"You played all your pre-World Cup series on low, slow, gripping pitches-basically substandard surfaces," he said. "Did you really think Sri Lanka's pitches would be similar? Was this an ICC event or were we preparing for a home series?"

For context, Pakistan had swept Australia 3-0 in a T20I series at home just before the World Cup.

Salman Butt knows modern cricket by advocating for Babar and Rizwan to open?

Are you a fan of Babar, Rizwan and Misbah?
Never liked Riz. Babar and Misbah, I still like them more than I dislike them.

My take on selections is that right players for right format must be chosen and at their favoured positions.

I’d like Babar to focus on tests, he’s a liability in the t20 team. Riz always ticked me the wrong away.

Misbah the test captain, the guy who made us number 1 in tests, stabilised our ship when we were going through even bigger crises in the aftermath of SL team attack, and spot fixing scandals. Made UAE a fortress for us. Yes I have fond memories of that time.

Do I like Misbah the ODI batter? Not at all.
Not a fan of his stint in selector-coach dual role either.

Can you share some stats which stop Pakistan from even trying?

Either average is poor or SR is poor. Among batsmen Babar, Usman. Among all rounders Nawaz strike rate is pitiful 51.72 at an avge of 3.75. Basically one guy is carrying the team.
