Jack Dorsey claimed that the company had received “many requests” from India to block accounts covering farmers' protests and those critical of the government.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, in a stunning allegation, claimed that the company had received “many requests” from India to block accounts covering farmers' protests and those critical of the government. While the government was yet to react to Dorsey's allegation, the Congress's wings - the Youth Congress and National Students' Union of India - took to Twitter to share the clip of his claim which he made during an interview to YouTube channel Breaking Points on Monday.

During the interview, when asked if he had faced any pressure from foreign governments, Dorsey, who stepped down from Twitter's board last year, replied, “India for example, India is one of the countries which had many requests around farmers protests, around particular journalists which were critical of the government, and it manifested in ways such as ‘we will shut Twitter down in India’… ‘we would raid the homes of your employees', which they did; ‘we will shut down your offices if you don't follow suit’. And this is India, a democratic country.”

In November 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the repeal of the three controversial farm laws, after thousands of farmers had been camping at Delhi border points in a protest of unprecedented scale since November 2020. Modi admitted the failure in convincing the farmers and appealed to them to call off their year-long protest. In the winter session of Parliament, the three laws were withdrawn.

According to Dorsey, Turkey behaved similarly - like India. The Turkish government, too, threatened to shut down Twitter, which often got engaged in court battles with the government and won, he added.

Reacting to Dorsey's interview, national president of the Indian Youth Congress Srinivas BV tweeted, “Mother of Democracy - Unfiltered.”

Neeraj Kundan of the NSUI alleged that the “BJP is the killer of democracy, it is being proved again and again”.

Elon Musk became 'reckless': Jack Dorsey
Dorsey also spoke on Elon Musk's run as Twitter CEO, calling some of the moves the billionaire made “fairly reckless”.

The former Twitter CEO, who has backed the invite-only, Twitter-alternative Bluesky. Dorsey said he asked Musk to join Twitter's board many times before Musk joined in April of last year, during which Musk also agreed to buy Twitter.

"Elon is our number one user. He's our number one customer… He understood the platform deeply, and he's a technologist and he builds technology," Dorsey said. But when Musk tried to back out of buying the company, prompting a lawsuit from Twitter, Dorsey said was “when things really went south”.

Dorsey thought twitter is beyond the laws of the country. They refused to comply. When they were told the consequences, they move the Delhi High Court. When court asked them to comply they finally had to give in.

Twitter was trying to build a one sided narrative and letting misinformation spread.

Twitter and Dorsey are also facing accusations in US.

Perhaps they thought twitter is some kind of sovereign territory.

If he didn't like Indian laws, he should have shutdown and left.

If they can threaten Twitter then imagine what they are doing to Indian media channels behind the scenes. There is a reason they call Indian media as godi media. :inti

Dorsey's house about to be bulldozed in 3...2... by the Indian Erdogan.

What is written in the OP and what are you blabbering about here lol?

Those who posted regarding farmer protests and were criticising the government, what laws were they breaking? Please explain lol. :91:

Maybe you and others are forgetting that Twitter is used by andhbhakhts also to spread their agenda. Since they post in favour of BJP nothing happens to their accounts and nobody threatens Twitter lol. Hypocrites. :inti

funny how joshila is whining here, and if his posts were removed he would still be whining, he just doesnt understand the point

This is precisely the news the world wants to see! India and its pseudo freedom exposed under a fascist terrorist right wing government!

The world doesn't bother laughing, they just try to figure out how they can sell into an English speaking Indian market thirsting for western content.

Everyone is thirsty for western content including Chinese. Indians definitely have increased western consumption since 1991 but right now it’s comparable to everyone else.

Fortunately it’s also the reason it has become backoffice for world including non-English speaking countries but definitely the English speaking has helped learning the study materials readily available.

I agree on the world not caring, they care based on interests as we already know now.

Yes, that's what I said. I was addressing Technic's view that the world was laughing at India. India might seem funny to first world countries, but there's a serious market there to be sold into.

Absolutely agree. The West is only interested in the Indian market of 1.4 Billion people and doesn't give a hoot about Indian values, plus is fully aware of Modi antics (hence his ban from entering the West before he was PM).

History will repeat itself, with the West slowly rinsing India of its riches, and when the time comes, foreign money will be pulled out in a jiffy. The only difference is this time boots on the ground are not needed.

But the news in the OP is for those folks who seem to believe India is the next beacon of civilization despite having a 5000 year head start.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met prominent US personalities from different walks of life, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk who asserted that India has more promise than any other large country and that he is incredibly excited about its future.
Musk told reporters after meeting PM Modi that Twitter, the social media giant he owns, does not have a choice but to follow the local government. Or it will get shut down, he said when asked about the company's former owner and CEO Jack Dorsey's recent allegation against the Indian government.

"The best we can do is to follow the laws in any given country," he said, adding that it is impossible for "us to do more than that".

There are different rules and regulations for different forms of governments, and "we will do our best to provide the freest speech that is possible under the law", Musk said.

Many Western countries including the one that you call home and keep gloating about at every opportunity have a trade deficit with India ... it helps to be aware of the bare facts before indulging in keyboard warfare.

Indian police on Monday blocked roads to halt farmers who were marching to New Delhi to press for the better crop prices promised to them in 2021 when thousands of growers camped out on major highways leading to the country's capital.

Some government ministers are expected to meet farm union leaders on Monday to avoid a repeat of the year-long protest, which was aimed at forcing the government to repeal farm laws designed to deregulate vast agricultural markets.

The march comes just months before national elections in India, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is widely expected to win a third term.

India's millions of farmers form an influential voting bloc and ruling parties try to keep growers on their side.

Television footage showed farmers in tractors driving towards Delhi from the northern Indian breadbasket states of Punjab and Haryana, and barriers including barbed wire fencing and cement blocks put up on the edges of the city to stop them. Police also issued orders prohibiting public gatherings in Delhi.

The farmers have come out after a call by union leaders to demand higher support or guaranteed prices for their produce, and press the government to meet its promise to double farmers' income.

"We will move peacefully and our objective is that the government listen to our demands," Sarvan Singh Pandher, general secretary of Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, told news agency ANI.

The government announces support prices for more than 20 crops each year to set a benchmark, but state agencies buy only rice and wheat at the support level, which benefits only about 6% of farmers who raise those two crops.

In 2021, when Modi's administration repealed the farm laws after the farmers protested, the government said it would set up a panel of growers and government officials to find ways to ensure support prices for all farm produce.

Farmers accuse the government of going slow on that promise.

I thought this issue had been resolved. But now, I understand it was just silenced.
