Which current XI test players would most likely win against india taking into account their record in Asia?

My XI is:

Azhar Ali

Tom Latham

Joe Root (I think azam is too inexperienced and wont be successful in india. Root averages 53)

Steve Smith

Ben Stokes

Shakib al Hasan

BJ Watling

Pat Cummins

Nathan Lyon

Yasir Shah( he leaks runs but can get vital breakthroughs)

Ajaz Patel( he has been a very successful spinner against pakistan in UAE and in Sri Lanka)

This team may have one too many spinners. Other possible alternatives omitted are Boult, Holder, Dilruwan Perera, Karunaratne,Chandimal, Mohammad Abbas,Elgar,

Azhar is too slow and will struggle against Ashwin/Jadeja because he is not any great against spin. Get in Babar, too good not to be there.

Karunaratne
Latham/Elgar
Root
Smith
Babar
Shakib
QDk(wkt)
Cummins
Shaheen
Yasir
Lyon

Leg spinners traditionally don't do well vs India so I won't pick Yasir. Lyon and Shakib should we enough

1. Elgar
2. Latham
3. Root
4. Smith
5. Babar
6. Shakib
7. QDK
8. Holder
9. Cummins
10. Starc
11. Lyon

India feasts on subpar spinners so only play Shakib, Lyon

Holder averages 11 with the bat, 27 with the ball. Almost the 1st picked after smith

Don't love Starc but need true strike bowlers, and he has a great SR

Basically hope Smith scores 100 every innings and Cummins and Holder can win you the test
11.

Karunaratne averages 15 in india, however he would be a better choice than elgar . The only problem with azhar ali is that he will most likely get knicked within the first 5 overs from the seamers, otherwise he plays spin much better than other openers.

You don't think williamson would be a better option than babar? babr is still new to test cricket and it is still relatively uncertain if he would be successful in india.

1. Matt Renshaw
2. David Warner
3. Steve Smith
4. Shaun Marsh
5. Peter Handscomb
6. Mitchell Marsh
7. Matthew Wade
8. Mitchell Starc
9. Nathan Lyon
10. Steve O' Keefe
11. Josh Hazelwood

The pitch should ofcourse be a rank-turner.

I think you are hyping up shaheen a bit too much :))

Funnily enough, I am struggling for a second pace bowling option. Cummins also is umproven in India. Rabada has a poor record in India but I feel if he had better support, he would have done better because his support pacer, Vernon Philander was bowling like a stock bowler.

Hazelwood has a 6-fer in India but he was ineffective in that series, he was just lucky that he managed to get that, it could have gone to anyone.

Pattinson in 2013 India tour was excellent but he had injuries and don't think he is any good now.

Boult and Starc aren't convincing either. Shaheen is from subcontinent, so he might do well in India but we may never know :))

Either way it's fine. But Kane hasn't done much in India.

Would still back India to beat this team but it can give them a proper fight.

This lineup can score 400+ and keep India to 350 on a good day.

Starc has been thrashed way too many times in india to even be considered. he averages above 50 and has been ineffective in all tests he played in india.

But you might be right about the legspinners, they get hammered usually more than the pacers sometimes.
However, Adil Rashid bowled really well in india on flat pitches which were not raging turners.

Now that I think about it, adil rashid might be a good option as well, he won engalnd the 2nd or 3rd test in sri lanka 2 years ago

Whatever team comes to India, will always get their rear side handed to them.
Current Indian XI is unstoppable in India.

wanna consider another spinner in place of starc?

Marnus

Bobby

Hazelwood
Cummins

marnus only played a 2 tests in the UAE where he scored few runs on flat pitches. no doubt marnus has alot of potential and is one of the best test batsmen, but he needs to play more tests in asia to be considered fit for india.

A test match in Dharamsala or Kolkata will have result like

India XI 234 all-out( Kohli 78, Shaheen 8-21)
ROW XI 496-3 Dec( Labu 178*, dussen 164*, Jadeja 3-141)
India XI 302 all-out ( Pujara 112, Kohli 59, Archer 6-47)

2 dodgy SL spinners who have a 25 degree bent elbow

I’ll take Mushi against India, in India simply as a batsman if not WK. He is a brilliant player of spin. Karuna is very good opener, but not sure against spinners on turners - I’ll have to play at least one makeshift opener here, probably two. And two spinners, instead of three, even on turners.

My XI:

1. +Kock
2. *Williamson
3. Root
4. Smith
5. Mushi
6. Babar
7. Stokes
8. Shakib
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Anderson

I picked Jimmy over Jofra or Radaba for his experience on bowling in Indian wickets and ability to reverse the old ball, which will be a key here. Tamim had a realistic chance to make it over Babar as specialist opener & he is a better player of spin than Babar, but Babar right now is in red hot form, deserves a spot - between 5-6, I picked Babar for 6 because, chances are high that no. 6 will face second new ball, while No. 5 often comes when two spinners are bowling together. Stokes, Shakib comes at 7 & 8 to play aggressively with the tail and add valuable runs.

Holder makes the squad as 12th man, just in case, as I won’t pick a leggi against India. It’s a bit batting heavy team, but that’s probably the way team should look to play against India in India - pileup runs in first innings and then use two finger spinners for long, long spells with three pacers in short bursts, keeping an eye on reversing the ball.

Got to pick Holder I reckon. Fantastic record in India and solid bat as well. Anderwon hasn't done great there.

Really like the team otherwise, especially Stokes, Shakib at 7-8, you need the batting to compete

Anderson had his moments in India,he won 2 tests for England but overall he had a bad perfomance.

I know about Holder, but picked him as 12th man, because of Anderson’s ability with old ball. Holder had a great (but short) tour, but I don’t think in a long series of 5-6 Tests, his hit the deck bowling will work in India. Jimmy has grown almost a decade to wrong side & lost his pace considerably since that series, so I am not sure either, but he knows the length of bowling in India.

Holder is actually not much of a hit the deck bowler despite his height. He is more of a swinger. He bowls a fuller length than most expect.

May be, I'll change the XI a little now as per popular demand - Holder for Jimmy; it strengthens the batting as well considerably. In that case, Anderson will miss the squad all together, no point carrying a senior bowler unless he is starting - I'll pick Archer as 12th man.

But, key is always the same - out bat India in first innings. I think, most touring teams tend to believe if you are batting second, you are out of the game in India; which probably is not the case. Standard Indian wickets are often best for batting on day 2-3, then it starts to break sharp from 3rd evening, while in winter games, Indian tracks offer enough for new ball pacers in first two mornings.

I actually think that this World XI has a better chance to win batting 2nd (unless it's a rank turner), than first, at least not much added advantage batting first - on a standard wicket with good pace & carry, a little grass on top, BUT on a dry base, which should crumble later. Bowl first on fresh wicket aggressively with two new balls to knock at least 6 wickets in four hours of two morning sessions, and keep things tight in the two middle sessions with accurate finger spinners and may be a bit of reverse. It's possible to get IND all-out under 350 by lunch on Day two - and bat for 4.5 sessions aggressively, for a lead around 100-125 at least. Then use the last hour of Day 3 and first two of day 4 to restrict the target below 200, max 250, though I believe this batting line-up will chase ~300 successfully, unless it's becomes a lottery to bat on last innings.

Here the ultimate key will be batting on first innings, be first or second innings of the match - we tend to miss the fact that, most of the tight Tests in India are lost for failure in first innings, not second innings - which is given, every team including IND will struggle to survive a full day on last innings in India; but it's possible to pileup 500+ scores batting on 2nd innings of the game. IND has won many Tests chasing, not because of their 4th innings batting, rather because batsmen never allowed the opponents run away with a significant lead after 1st innings - my tactics is to cover that with batting, lots of it; once the wicket starts to crumble, any combination of 5 bowlers in World XI are good enough to win the game, bowling 3rd or 4th won't matter much.

No world x1 has the ability to defeat india in india.

We were pounding good teams like aus and eng when we only had a good spin attack. Now we have one of the best pace attack to.

Ashwin
Jadeja
Bumrah
Shami
Kuldeep/umesh

Aren't Shami, umesh, even ishant to an extent, hit the deck bowlers?

Ishant may be, but not the other two; their height isn’t enough. In fact, our subcontinent pacers hardly can be hit he deck type because they are groomed on a different type of wicket and develop their bowling tactics on a different length; and genetically that shoulder is not there, yet. Both Shami & Umesh songs the new ball and Shami is a good user of old ball, in between, they mix short staff as a surprise element.

Hit the deck bowlers are totally different - they use more shoulders and their standard length is to keep batsmen on back foot all the time, in between they pitch it up or brings back from off cutter length. Stock delivery of a perfect hit the deck pacer is leg-cutter in three quarter length and completely blocking leg side shots unless you are good at hooking & pulling.

I guess bumrah can be categorised as a hit the deck bowler.

Brother this team won't get to 5th day let alone drawing the match.
And a big lol at afridi picking 8-21,even Marshall at his prime wouldn't be able to do that against this team in India.
Each and every player is a home track bully of the highest order except kohli, Jamieson and archer will be thrashed all over the park.

Dear Little Brother,

No matter how much people try to ignore but a good post generally becomes noticeable. This was one of them :afridi

The world is still unaware of the power of Rassie Van der dussen, Marnus Labuschgane and Shaheen Shah Afridi. These three together in one team can take on the greatest team of all-time let alone the current Indian team.

Kyle Jamieson showed us the power in his debut test series only. These little youngsters have great potential and as long as the current Indian team doesn't play Prithvi Shaw, it will be favourites to win over the current Indian team.

It is bizzare that Shaheen doesn't get to prove himself here. He would have produced figures of 8-21 here as mentioned above. No wonder I always find him in my XI for drafts in Indian conditions :afridi

No World XI team can beat us in a series in home conditions especially if we play our full strength team.

Yeah i don't see any aspects in this Indian team at home that can be exploited or overcome. Whatever a World XI can throw at them India can throw back.

Warner
Babar
Root
Smith
Williamson (c)
Shakib
Rizwan (wk)
Ajaz
Wagner
Jamieson
Shaheen.

It will be hard. Mainly due to the Indian bowling unit in home conditions. They have excellent pace and spin attacks for their home conditions. I can't think of putting together a bowling unit that can look better than what Indians can put.

I have a more optimistic view of batting. You can put Smith, Root, etc to put a good batting unit. They may even surpass Indian batting or at least be comparable. But I don't see what you can do with the bowling unit. That's a bigger challenge.

You gotta factor in this is one of the worst Indian batting line up against spin. I don't fancy the current Indian middle order surviving against our own spin attack in these conditions. The Guys who clicked in this series are the ones who play domestic cricket. Agarwal & Iyer.

Dont need a World XI to beat India in India lol.

Pakistan alone can do it.

Other possible alternatives omitted are Boult, Holder, Dilruwan Perera, Karunaratne,Chandimal, Mohammad Abbas,Elgar,
Sorry my friend but that is the weakest World XI ever to have ever been picked on this forum.

What does beating SL go to do with beating India?

Man to man prove to me with facts why Pakistan cant beat India in India?

Given the facts are so heavily against you i think the onus should be on you to prove why Pakistan could do it.

Nah mate. I am not making any silly claims that nobody can beat Pakistan in Pakistan / UAE.

The thread seems to suggest nobody including Pakistan can beat India in India.

Think the onus is not on me for this one.

A fully fit Stokes?
Archer when firing on all cylinders?

When you have 3 seamers (Wagner, Jamieson, and Shaheen), you don't need a 4th one in India.

Not sure how effective Stokes will be in India. Also, I think a spin all-rounder is better.

I find Archer slightly overrated in Test. Jamieson, Wagner, and Shaheen are better.

Pakistan has lost 8 tests in UAE since 2013. It will sure look silly to claim that nobody can beat Pakistan in UAE after losing 8 tests and one of them was against WI. Now if Pakistan had lost only 1-2 tests, the claim won't be so silly. I don't think two situations are even in the ballpark.

Aus came pretty close to winning so it's not impossible. Just hard to do due to the advantage Indians have due to their bowling.

If Pakistan can't even beat srilanka and NZ at Home then forget about dream of beating india .

My XI

Latham
Dean Elgar
Joe Root (c)
Steve Smith
Ben Stokes
Decock (wk)
Shakib
Woakes
Cummins
Ajaz
Lyon
Embuldeniya (12th)

In India it's better to get a strong and big opening stand rather than a fast one. Goal is to bat long
2 excellent players of spin in middle order
1 dashing keeper batsman
3 spinners and 2 fast bowlers
2 alrounders plus woakes
6 th bowler options - Joe Root, elgar

It also depends on which ground you are playing at. There is a common misconception all Indian pitches behave the same way. That is 100% untrue. India has wide range of pitches. From Dharmasala to chepauk. Each has its own nature. Some conditions actually help seamers.

Indian second string side has higher chance of beating India in India than the world eleven.

Please announce the world XI atleast 10 days in advance, and Kohli will get the customized pitch made to ensure India's win. If too many fast bowlers in World XI then Kohli will have the spinning track made, if too many spinners then a slow pitch.

No team is beating India in India in a test series. The only one with any chance is Australia.

1.Tom Latham
