WTC23 Final: Australia vs India | The Oval | June 7-11, 2023 | Day 4

No Bro

If this would have come off, we would be talking about fearless cricket etc.

To the victors the spoils type thing.

It was over-ambitious from Pujara. Of all people, you expect Pujara to not get out this way. This was Surya Kumar Yadav type shot from him.

Rohit's dismissal was poor choice of shot selection. Green has slog swept spinners for fun in IPl but today in morning he didn't tried that for the same reason. It was poor shot selection from Rohit especially doing it straightaway vs Lyon.

Kohli is looking to bat out time here , I do not think he is looking to go for win.

This should ideally be Kohli's last test innings, but it won't be.

Game On Hai!

Australia are on course to be crowned world Test champions but must a find a way past India's Virat Kohli if they are to win the final at The Oval.

Set a world-record 444 to win, India reached 164-3 at the close on day four, with Kohli in imperious touch for his 44 not out and Ajinkya Rahane unbeaten on 20.

India earlier slipped to 91-3 after Cameron Green was controversially adjudged to have caught Shubman Gill and a stand of 51 between Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara ended with both falling for the addition of one run.

On a glorious evening, with India's passionate fans delighting at every addition to the scoreboard, Australia ended needing seven more wickets, India another 280 runs.

Australia earlier declared their second innings on 270-8 an hour after lunch, with wicketkeeper Alex Carey 66 not out.

There is a reserve day scheduled for Monday if time is lost to bad weather, but the forecast for Sunday suggests there will be ample time to determine the second world Test champions, after New Zealand two years ago.

If there is no time lost and the game is drawn on the fifth day, Australia and India will share the title.

Australia I think will win the Test match in the final session, but India have played their part and will make the Aussies work hard for that Mace.

It’s been a compelling game, with some good twists, in front of a loud and full crowd and in fantastic June weather. A perfect advert for Test cricket in the second World Final.

In the end, I think it will be those costly 100 runs from Carey and Starc that will lose the game for India. Australia were 124/5 and really should've been restricted to below 210.

In the end we all are cricket fans 🥰

I have a feeling King Kohli can do it

Greatest batsman Virat Kohli The chase master 👍

Greatest Test Match oval test match

Greatest chase ever 🥳

Come on :97:

Hold your horses my friend. The conditions were very good for batting after the new bowl stopped swinging and batting became easy. If India batted better, they should have been 1 down at 160 instead of 3. Rohit and Pujara both got out to poor shots.

Tomorrow first hour, the conditions will be more assisting to pacers and then Lyon will come into play as well. It will be hard first session and I will be surprised if Kohli or Rahane anyone of them are batting till lunch.

Game on hai. Indias game to lose

Aus should take this.

280 runs are lots of runs left and India can lose 2 quick wickets any time.

The fourth day of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023 saw Australia add quick runs in the first half of the day and declare their second innings at 270 for eight. Losing their top three in the chase, India were 164 for three in pursuit of a mammoth target of 444 at the end of day's play.

India went into the morning session with the twin objective of keeping Australia’s scoring rate in check, while also inflicting further damage to their wickets column.

Disciplined bowling ensured that Australia didn’t run away with their lead in the first hour of play, scoring at 2.35 runs an over. Umesh Yadav also brought success in the form of Marnus Labuschagne (41). He bowled a beautiful delivery that jagged slightly away from Labuschagne's bat, and the Queensland batter ended up giving an outside edge towards first slip, where Cheteshwar Pujara safely pouched it.

Though India accounted for Cameron Green, who was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja in the second hour, some purposeful batting from Alex Carey ensured that Australia scored at an improved run rate of 3.75 and steadily furthered their grip over the Test.

At lunch the batting side were 201 for the loss of six wickets, with an overall lead of 374 runs.

The second session saw Australia turn up the heat yet further on India's bowlers. Carey used good support from Mitchell Starc to help Australia’s lead speed past 400. The duo added 93 runs from 120 balls for the seventh wicket, a partnership that featured 13 boundaries.

Australia declared after Starc and Pat Cummins fell in quick succession to Mohammed Shami while going for quick runs. Alex Carey, unbeaten on 66, was the highest run-scorer in the third innings as Australia finished at 270 for eight, setting India a target of 444 runs.

The daunting task of chasing this formidable score became even more challenging for Rohit Sharma’s men in context of the ground’s history: Their ask was more than the highest-ever fourth innings total in a Test at The Oval.

The above-mentioned total was achieved by Srinivas Venkataraghavan’s India in 1979, when they finished at 429 for eight, nine short of their target of 438, in a drawn Test against England.

Like their first outing, openers Rohit and Shubman Gill were proactive at the start of India’s innings. The batters unfurled a series of attractive punches, pulls and drives to help India go at nearly run-a-ball for the first seven overs. Australia had their first success when Gill edged a Scott Boland delivery to Green in the Gully region, and the all-rounder grasped it just before the ball touched the ground. India walked back at 41 for one at the end of the second session.

Despite this setback, India didn't alter their approach at the start of the third session. Rohit and Pujara punished any loose delivery from the bowlers and kept the run rate close to four for the first hour.

Just like in the first innings, the introduction of off-spinner Nathan Lyon brought a breakthrough for Australia. Rohit was trapped lbw when he tried to go for a sweep in Lyon's very first over and ended up missing one which straightened and hit the pads. In the very next over, Pujara fell when he tried to uppercut a Cummins bouncer and got a toe edge which deflected to Carey's gloves.

The repair job fell to Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. The experienced duo helped rebuild the India innings with a confident 71-run stand for the fourth wicket. Kohli wasn't afraid to go for his shots from the very start, whereas Rahane focused on holding the other end.

With all results possible, play will start at 10h30 local time on Sunday morning.

280 to win.

Kohli must treat this as an ODI and play it that way. This is the only way match can get interesting. Otherwise, it is just a matter of time before India will get bundled out.

Last shot at glory for Kohli in Tests. He deserves a mace but logic says too many runs left.

After Shardul Thakur, senior speedster Mohammed Shami has said that the pitch being used for the World Test Championship final against Australia was not fully ready for a game of that magnitude.

The pitch continues to offer variable bounce but behaved better on day four than the first three days.

“In Test matches, pitches tend to get slower as the game goes on. But I don’t think this pitch was fully prepared for World Test Championship final. It was not fully ready but day by day it does change in a Test match,” said Shami after stumps on day four.

India were 164 for three chasing a record 444 with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle.

Shami thinks his team has a good chance of creating history on Sunday.

“Test matches should be decided on day five and in the last session. That is what called a proper Test.

In the last four years, we have played well against Australia. Both have fought hard. We will have to bat well tomorrow.” India won a back to back series in Australia in 2021 after staging remarkable comebacks in Sydney and Brisbane.

Asked if India will take confidence from those memorable games, he said:”We believe we can win the match. We have performed well overseas not just in England. We will come together to win this. 280 runs if you bat well it is gettable.” Rahane did not take the field in second innings after being hit while batting on Friday. But Shami said he is fully fit to bat.

“He is batting well. In sports, you get hurt but you keep playing.” Shami too is prepared to make a lower-order contribution if the need arises.

Kohli in the mood - this is his game.

I don't think Kohli has helped India chase 280 runs when India was already down 3 wickets. Some one can correct me if I am wrong. It's mighty hard thing to do.

Agreed.

The stage is set tomorrow for Kohli.

I think India will win
But if they don’t win atleast they playing like champions

Australia need big plan against Kohli and rahane 🤔

Aus just need to get Kohli and Jadeja early. India has been smashing Starc for quite a while now.

That’s what I was expecting exciting match 🥳

Supporting Kohli if he don’t win
Than atleast my green 🥰 will win
