My rating-

Top 10 Test batsmen -

1. Sunil Gavaskar
2. Sachin Tendulkar
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Mohinder Amarnath
5. Virender Sehwag
6. Vijay Hazare
7. Mohd. Azharuddin
8. VVS Laxman
9. Gundappa Viswanath
10. Saurav Ganguly

***The legend MHK Pataudi didn't make it just because of not having a record that compares well with these 10 and we can only speculate how good he would have been if he had full vision. In my eyes, he should be right in the middle of this list.

Top 10 ODI batsmen-

1. Sachin Tendulkar
2. MS Dhoni
3. Yuvraj Singh
4. Virender Sehwag
5. Saurav Ganguly
6. Gautum Gambhir
7. Rahul Dravid
8. Virat Kohli
9. Mohd Azharuddin
10. Ajay Jadeja

*** Six of them are still active, MSD and Kohli may well beat SRT for top spot by the time they retire so exciting prospect. Just shows how lucky we have been in batting to have such great talent.

Kohli on that list already?

Wow.

He's in my top 10 ODI batsmen list and i guess he deserves to be there already with that kind of a record. With 10 hundreds in 90 odd outings, he is the quickest ever to do it. I actually felt a little weird putting him at #8 because he is gonna be moving up the charts in coming yeares, no doubt about about that. :)

Dont get me wrong, Kohli is a very good batsman, but why would you rate him high when majority of his centuries is in SubCont. I repeat Majority, not ALL CENTURIES.

It's not that he is in my test or overall list. Even if he stops playing Cricket right now, i'll have him in my ODI list for what he has done so far. It's an incredible record.

I request my friends not to include the Match fixers in your list ...

For God's sake they have sold our country for few rupees...

They don't deserve to be there...

Please guys don't take the 'MY' too seriously. Put personal bias aside and rank them how you think they should be. :)

Kya yaar , simple reason hai .

Vishwanath averages mammoth 41 in Tests but Tendulkar averages only a measly 55 in Tests ,

41 > 55

Hence proved .

After 2-3 Test Series , dont be surprised if Tendulkar gets pushed below Manjrekar and Kambli .

3) Mohinder Amarnath (The real Greatest batsmen of pace)

Absolutely agreed bhai. It's a great story because when he started back in 1969 he was like today's Suresh Raina. Was badly found out against pace and bounce. But he retured a decade later as an absolute fighter and by the time he retired ( except for his last year dip in form) he was one of the best batsmen in the whole world against pace bowling, certainly from India.

His heroics in West Indies and Pakistan will never be forgotten.

Viswanath > Tendulkar? :13:
Manjrekar, Kambli in the list ahead of Amarnath, Ganguly, Hazare? :O

Anybody who puts Sehwag on any of their test lists is insane.

Looked far more comfortable against Johnson, Lee in 2007 and Pattinson, Siddle this time around in Australia compared to Dravid.
Sehwag's heck of a good player.

Sehwag is not too bad , yes he has problems in overseas series but still you cannot ignore his 80 + S/R Hitting to big scores in the subcontinent . His record in Australia is very good too .

Without Sehwag India would not have enjoyed so much success against Pakistan in the last decade , Dravid & Tendu were of not much effect before Sehwag emerged on the scene and made the real difference .

That is true and it's not like he's being crowned the king. It's a top 10 list and he richly deserves to be in the middle of it because a few other players in there weren't all that outside India either. The four stand out performers are Gavaskar, SRT, Dravid and Amarnath. Rest all average between 30-45 outside home. No big deal. The manner in which Sehwag has been scoring those runs gives him a good lead.

I think Dhoni is the best ODI cricketer India have produced, I'm surprised not more people have him at the top spot for that format.

^ Arguably Sledge. But we would like him to carry on with it and keep the chase alive. Like i said, both him and Kohli are future contenders for #1 but to put MSD there already will do him no favour. There is 4-5 years of Cricket still left in him, why hurry?

I'd like to see him climb up the test charts as well. Very disappointed so far.

Not so great from MSD in ICC tourneys, he has been the Inzamam Ul Haq as far as ICC campaigns are concerned with only one memorable knockout inning. UV on the other hand has been gold in those matches.

^ Misbah's a joke compared to MSD. There is SR difference of nearly 20 runs per 100 ball.

Gambhir's fallen off the track. :(

#2 Dhoni
#3 Kohli
#4 Ganguly
#5 Yuvraj
#6 Gambhir
#7 Raina
#8 Dravid
#9 Sehwag
#10 Sidhu

Heck, it was harder to make up these couple of lists than I thought going into them.

Raina already above Dravid, Sehwag? :yk

Easily. Sehwag was an ODI underachiever aside from those few games in New Zealand at the start of his career, and LoIs weren't Dravid's cup of tea either. It's flipped the other way around for Raina, he loves batting in 50-over cricket, and has won us a couple of World Cup knockout encounters with the blade in the process.

Mohinder amarnath at 4 and 7? He shouldn't be in the top 10 even :)))

Ok How is better than, lets say, vvs laxman in tests?

Right, I'll let freelance speak for himself, I've rated him far below Laxman and the current generation.

Even my ODI side is heavily biased to ward the newer guys, aside from Sidhu.

Surprised to see so many people rate Dravid above Tendulkar.

Barring a couple of good series here and there, in tests Dravid was a walking wicket in SA and Aus.
Was also a decent ODI bat at best.

Anyhoo,

1 - Sachin Tendulkar
2 - Sunil Gavaskar
3 - Rahul Dravid
4 - Virender Sehwag
5 - VVS Laxman

MS Dhoni would juuust make it mainly due to his ODI exploits.

India have produced other superb batsmen like Amarnath, Vishwanath, Azharuddin, Ganguly etc. but none of them deserve to be called 'greats' in my humble opinion.

EDIT - Vijay Hazare's stats look quite good though!

I was quite scared of Sehwag and Dravid for different reasons.

Sehwag
Dravid
Gavaskar
Azharudding
Tendulkar
Ganguly

Laxman was a sitting duck against any bowler that bowled good-fullish lengths and he did not have a great record against England.

Sehwag is vastly underrated imo. With fairly attritional batsmen and bowlers, it was important for India to have someone like Sehwag who could scare the bejesus outta the opposition. Their percentage of home wins would have been far lower without him.

Test batsmen -

1. Sunil Gavaskar 1. Rahul Dravid
3. Sachin Tendulkar
4. Mohd. Azharuddin
5. Gundappa Viswanath
6. Mohinder Amarnath

Can't decide between Dravid and Gavaskar! If you just look at the batting point of view, Gavaskar is #1 but if you look add add attitude and temperament, then Dravid edges ahead.

I think many fans rate players based on recent performances otherwise Sehwag is in surely class of his own. Cricket has been played for so long, how many test openers have dominated the way he did? He simply allowed not so good bowling unit plenty of extra time by scoring so quickly and heavily in many matches.

80+ SR as an opener with 50 odd average for 100+ test match. Simply an unmatched performance. He is surely underrated by many due to his last few series.

How did you compare Dravid and Gavaskar's attitude and temperament ? How did you arrive at Dravid had more of them ?

it should be top 5 batsmen lol

i dont know most indian batsmen barring gavaskar from pre 90's and im pretty sure its the case here on pp in general

Ok How is better than, lets say, vvs laxman in tests?

Right, I'll let freelance speak for himself, I've rated him far below Laxman and the current generation.

Was in my opinion the second best Indian batsman in Gavaskar's era, definitely better than Vangasarkar and Gundappa, guy was real hardcore fighter. He turned it on when you least expected it, against the toughest challenges.

I will rate Laxman and Dravid equal.. Dravid had wider performance opposition, Laxman had more quality performance against Aus and to some extent SA.. away from home.. if asked to choose one b/w the two, I will pick Laxman.

Sachin... *daylight*.....

Dravid
Vishwanath
Gavaskar
Vinoo Mankad
Vijay Hazare
Pataudi
Laxman
Amarnath
Virender Sehwag

Special mentions : Azharuddin, Vengsarkar, Srikanth, Ganguly, Dhoni (still has time)
