Afghanistan and Bangladesh are both looking to build on opening victories over Zimbabwe, as the two sides meet in their first encounter of the ongoing tri-series.

Overview

Bangladesh v Afghanistan, 3rd match, T20I tri-series
Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur
Sunday, 15 September; 06:30pm local, 12:30pm GMT

Bangladesh snuck home in a last-over thriller in the opening game of the series and will be hoping for a stronger display when they meet Afghanistan. Meanwhile, their opponents will be buoyed by the convincing manner of their victory in the previous game, though they will not be resting on their laurels against a team they have had some tight tussles with in the past.

The visitors will be hoping for another strong performance from their batsmen, who cumulatively hit 15 sixes against Zimbabwe, including seven in a row between Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi. They will also hope 17-year-old wicket-keeper batsman Rahmatullah Gurbaz can produce some more fireworks, as he did at the top of the innings in that game.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will no doubt be demanding more from their established top six, who left them in trouble at 60/6 in their previous game, until Mosaddek Hossain and Afif Hossain combined for an 82-run partnership. But they will be enthused, having come out of that game with a win, thanks largely to the contributions of those two. They will also be looking towards captain and talisman Shakib Al Hasan to bounce back from a disappointing game against Zimbabwe, in which he conceded 49 runs from his four overs and scored only a solitary run.

Remember the last time

The last time these two sides met in T20Is was for a three-match series played in June last year, at Afghanistan's home away from home, Dehradun. While Afghanistan comfortably won the first two games, with Rashid Khan playing a key role in both matches, the third game went right to the wire. Only a fantastic piece of fielding by Shafiqullah off the final ball stopped Bangladesh from pulling off an improbable victory, and Afghanistan took the match by one run as they sealed a series whitewash. In the end, an all-round performance from Afghanistan trumped the superb individual performances of Mushfiqur Rahim (46) and Mahmudullah (45).

What they said

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh captain: "With the team going through a tough time this kind of a win will give a lot more confidence than just an easy win. We hope to carry the momentum to the next game against another difficult opponent."

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan captain: "I think that's the beauty of Afghanistan cricketers – that they can adjust very quickly as per the format. It's actually more of a mind thing than physical."

Conditions

The forecast looks good, with no rain forecast. Both teams will be familiar with conditions, having already played at the ground, with spin likely to play a key role and seamers looking to take pace off the ball when possible. Afghanistan bucked the trend of bowling first in Mirpur, but you would still expect the captain winning the toss to chase, given recent results at the ground – eight of the last 11 games have been won by the side batting second.

12/2 after 2 overs.

Mushfiq gone trying to play a stupid scoop shot. Was not needed so early in the innings.

Bangladesh bat deep so should be a good game. Pathetic shot by Mushfiq.

The way they are batting is as if they are cashing 200+. Irresponsible shots from both of the seniors. Another one gone.

Afghanistan were 40/4 and I was thinking good day for Bangladesh. They are gonna win.

However BD said wait a moment, we can do better than that. BD are now 32/4.

Sarkar (the walking wicket) is gone for a duck. Why does he keep getting selected? I have no answer.

32/4 after 5 overs.

Afghanistan recovered from 40/4 to 164/6, because BD only played 4 specialist batters. The 4 overs from part timers took pressure away from Afghanistan. Poor from BD. You cannot fill your team with just batters. Pick specialist bowlers.

Required run rate is close to 10 and Rashid got 4 overs left.

Can't see BD pulling this off unless there is a freak innings from someone.

Correct. Those part-timers gave away around 50 runs in 4 overs. It may well be the difference.

99/6 after 15.2 overs.

Should be too difficult for BD now. Afghans are likely to win this.

Bangladesh need 54 runs in 22 balls

Wow not sure what to make of this but Afghans are really making it big on this tour.

Losing so badly at home to Afghanistan and struggling even against Zimbabwe. Bangladesh’s purple patch got over pretty quickly.

Afghanistan registered a twelfth consecutive T20I victory, a record in men's cricket, as they beat Bangladesh by 25 runs.

Having chosen to bat first, the Afghanistan innings got off to the worst possible start when Rahmanullah was bowled by the first ball of the match, an absolute pearler from Mohammad Saifuddin which swung and nipped away before lifting off stump out of the ground. Things got even better for the hosts, as Shakib Al Hasan got Hazratullah Zazai caught from a top-edged slog. When first Najeeb Tarakai and then Najibullah Zadran were caught in the deep, Afghanistan found themselves 40/4 and in danger of falling well short of a competitive total.

Stalwarts Mohammad Nabi and Asghar Afghan had other ideas though, and they combined for a 79-run partnership in just over 10 overs to set the stage for Nabi's fireworks. Saifuddin was the man to break the partnership, a cutter leading Afghan to sky a catch to long-on, and he quickly claimed his fourth when Gulbadin Naib was bowled without scoring.

But when Soumya Sarkar came on to bowl the 18th, Shakib quickly regretted the bowling change, as Nabi launched two sixes and two fours from the over which went for 22 runs. Saifuddin stayed on to bowl the 19th in search of a 5-for but fared little better as again Nabi launched two maximums to make a mess of his figures, though he still finished with a T20I-best figure of 4/33. Nabi finished the innings with 84* from 54 balls as he led his side to an imposing total of 164/6.

Mujeeb's 4/15 ensured Bangladesh's chase never got goingMujeeb's 4/15 ensured Bangladesh's chase never got going
The Bangladesh innings got off to a similarly terrible start as Liton Das offered a tame catch to cover from Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s second ball before Mushfiqur Rahim was bowled attempting to scoop Farid Malik. Shakib and then Soumya were also dismissed by Mujeeb, caught at mid-on and lbw respectively, leaving Bangladesh on 32/4 at the end of the fifth over.

Mahmudullah led something of a fight back and was ably supported by Sabbir Rahman, who continued batting after receiving a nasty blow to the chin when trying to scoop Karim Janat. But when Gulbadin had the former caught in the deep for 44, the fight left the innings. Mujeeb returned to take the wicket of Sabbir, finishing with 4/15 to better his previous best T20 figures by a run. The innings faded until the final over when, with 40 runs required from it, Mustafizur provided some entertainment, striking a six and two fours before being caught in the deep to leave Bangladesh 139 all out.

Its mostly BD regressing badly. Lost test against Zim as well and would've lost in the opening T20 if not for a 19 year old.

Give Afghans some credits. They also drew ODI series 1-1 in West Indies.

Afghanistan can beat West Indies in subcontinent easily (I feel).

But, you are right. It is mostly BD playing like idiots.

Oh dear, Afghanistan is absolutely dominating Bangladesh in all format.

I will be honest, I really think that Bangladesh doesn't have much talent in cricket. Their only true world class player is Shakib, and a few (Tamim, Mushfiqur, Mustafizur) are decent. Mashrafe and Mahmudulla are average and rest are beyond mediocre.

Bangladesh will be hit very hard by the retirement of their senior players.

I can see them struggling to beat Zimbabwe regularly (who're bankrupt and unable to pay salary) once Shakib retires.

Bangladesh cricket board is rich, but money can't buy talent. Shakib is the biggest outlier in their cricket history by far.
