Ahmed Shehzad [The Mega Discussion Thread]

Looks have never failed Shehzad. He has the swagger of Virat Kohli until you put a bat in his hand.

Azhar may have made him look like de Villiers or Viv Richards, but we need to consider the tangible facts here: Azhar is the second leading scorer, with a much superior average and strike rate.

There is no comparison between the two - Azhar is a much superior batsman in all formats.
 
Not very convincing so far.
I shudder to think what will happen, when this series is on the line and Azha Ali gets dismissed early. We will be counting two very weak players to build the innings: Ahmed Shehzad and Hafeez.

Well said mamoon. People must understand there is no place for shehzad when haris comes back!

Dropping Shehzad for Harris will be a very defensive move don't you think? We got to make use of PP overs by having much agressive openers?

But are you saying that Haris will play as opener? Unlike a lot of posters here, I dont think Haris will walk back in the team when fit. The competition is heating up.
The only change that we should entertain to this line up is risk playing Mukhtar in place of Shehzad. If they win the next match, they might give mukhtar a go.

No he will be batting at no.3 and Hafeez will be opening with Azhar.

As much as I like Hafeez I must say his weakest link is batting in the first 15-20 overs. He doesn't enjoy playing the new ball.
 
Haris' bowling goes in his favor as well. Most of the PPers don't like his bowling, but with Hafeez banned, he will need to do some bowling along with Malik.

Well said. Yes, he looks good hitting everything right at a fielder for no runs, building up pressure. Bazid and Deano were commenting on how nervy he looked at the crease in the first few overs. And while he settled down enough to go to 40ish runs, he again threw away his wicket after a dumb shot.

So, no, he hasn't earned the place starting.
 
Had enough of him, shouldn't have cheats in the team, that too failing cheats.
 
Lol. People on here are too judgemental too quickly. There is a chance he thought he had genuinely taken that catch. No cricketer in their right mind these days would try and cheat the system considering the level and quality of coverage and replays.

Let it go. He made a genuine mistake thinking he had caught it.

Somewhat ridiculous way to get the 50 - funny to see him barely able to acknowledge the applause because he knows he should've been out - but he has absolutely done what we and he needed here.

Doing well so far. Now capitalize on that luck and take it home Shezzy!

He does actually seem to have support from Azhar and they've done well together so far. Azhar was giving him some serious claps when he got the 50.

Um, no, people just care about the team, and I personally would rather someone I criticize do well and help the team win than be right and the team lose. I'm sure the majority of real fans feel the same.

No, Pak fans are inconsistent just like the team. One day you're a hero and the next day they forget the previous innings and you become a zero. It has destroyed many careers.

I agree, good innings but this is a very rare exception, usually he just plods along and gets 30-40 runs off 50 balls which don't win matches and in fact lose matches.

If he could do this consistently, would I be criticizing him ? Hell no - the truth is that he's probably not good enough to do this day in day out and I'll be greatly pleased to be proven wrong.

Nope my views on Shezhad have been consistent throughout the last two years.

Exactly. I don't think one innings changes him as a player, but it's a start and when he makes a good start I WANT him to because I want us to win.

One thing is for sure, if we win this match and Shehzad carries on, he'll play the 5th ODI, and I want to see if he can continue to build on today.

The OP got absolutely burried again today. Two good performances on the trot. Today one being excellent. He is still finding ways to bash Shehzad though. Trying to do this:

I know. It was a good innings. All agree with it except the OP. Like i said he bashes him irrespective of the performance. Such obsession is sickening. I have no issue with criticism of any player. However, unfair criticism is bound to be pointed out.

Yeah, i woke up to hear that he scored a 95 and felt really sad for him that he didnt get to reach the century. Speaking well right now with russel arnold. Hoping to see a quote thread. :ahmed

Good words from Shehzad in the post-game, acknowledging that the coaching staff is working with him and pushing him.

I'm going to say it bluntly - it's good for Shehzad for Afridi NOT to be on this team, and to work with Waqar.

Massive edge, should've been caught at slip. MASSIVE luck he didn't get caught at 49. Had a shot there earlier, Matthews brought slip in, and second shot I think the fielder got a hand on it and it absolutely should've been caught.

Hafeez was talking to him so animatedly after that that it took him a bit before he even lifted the bat to acknowledge the 50. :))
 
Hack started his innings with an intent to lose.

Can he make up for the wasted balls when the field was all in the circle?
 
I don't begrudge this innings, he tried to up the ante and couldn't but at least he tried which is significantly better than what he does most of the time.
 
He most certainly isn't an elite talent that much we know and he has proved it again and again over his SIX years in international cricket. But we do not have Saeed Anwars waiting in the wings either. If he can up his SR and work on his strike rotation he can be useful for us.

I wouldn't write off Mukhtar just yet though. Lad deserves 2-3 more games before we discard him
 
These occurrences are all too frequent to bump now, gets tiresome at a certain stage.
 
He deserves another ODI series, but is proving to be a liability in T20s.

We need to invest in Mukhtar and Nauman as a pair.

He got exposed against a semi decent SRL attack. I can only imagine the horror of seeing him play against a decent pace attack.
 
Ahmed Shehzad - Can he continue to hold his place in the team?

He must be rested for T20I series against England just like Sarfaraz was rested against SL. Bilal Asif must be selected. Also Sharjeel! We must try out Mukhtar and Sharjeel opening combo.
 
I am LOLing at those asking for his drop. He just scored 46 in the last match and set up the foundation for 175. I cant believe fans can be so fickle. :))
 
Should be dropped from odis too! He has never scored when it matters esp while chasing except that slow hundred vs bangladesh
 
Doesn't have the game for T20Is, if we honestly want to regularly get 180+ scores we need batsmen that can go hard not grinders.

It's the same story for Shezzy. He needs to learn to rotate the strike if the ball is not there to be hit. Also needs to stop premeditating shots and play the ball on merit. He can do a lot better than he has shown this year.

The positive though is that he now is not afraid to take risks to score instead of waiting and tuk tuking to not get out.
 
In Asia or against lesser teams, he will keep giving one odd good performance, which will be enough for someone like him (who have got more than enough backing from selectors) to keep his place in the team.

He is too inconsistent at the moment, and hardly shows any intent to rotate the strike. He and Afridi are liabilities in our T-20 team at the moment.

He's done well in tests largely due to the fact that he's played mostly in the UAE. He hasn't done particularly well in ODIs but he's done just enough to merit selection. In T20s though, he's been in dismal form.

6 years already as an international player and still no improvement - I don't think getting dropped will see him change much.

I think he is a clean striker of the ball in the sense that he middles it very well unlike some of our other batsmen.

Any ways as far as looks are concerned what looks?
 
Still remember the time he was dubbed as a future great on this forum lol, it was only a year ago.

Simply not good enough - mentally and technically.
 
Ahmed Shehzad - The undroppable?

After a string of poor performances by Ahmed Shehzad, he somehow still finds a way to make into the starting XI -- not just the 15-man squad.

His overall career hasn't been impressive - averaging 35 in ODIs at 73 strike rate.

And if we talk about T20s, there too he has been mediocre with many saying he's not suited to T20s/ODIs. Again two consistent failures in T20s against Zimbabwe.

Mukhtar gets the chop, but Shehzad remains. Is PCB/Haroon Rasheed putting in a lot of faith in him? Or he has the backing of other players?
 
Bas kardo bhai. We all know he has been terrible and doesn't deserve a place in the squad going by current performances but there are 3 other threads going about the same topic so no need to clutter forum Tom much.

Also funny how you left out the obvious reason which everyone knows as to his place in the squad.

A clean striker is one that regularly manages to hit 4s and 6s, something that Shezhad never manages to do on a regular basis.

This is about how he manages to get into every XI.

What are the reasons PCB or allegedely others are backing him without him having been a top performer?

We aren't discussing his performance.

When there are so many other players waiting in line, how come Shehzad has gotten the LONGEST rope in Pakistan cricket's HISTORY?

He had never given any solid indication at any point in his career that he will go towards the very top so I don't know who and why these people tipped him to be a future great. Umar Akmal genuinely had the ability and skill set to go to the next level and he hasn't due to lack of maturity and temperament but imo Shehzad was never at such a position to begin with and anyone who thinks he can be a world class batsman is living in a fools paradise.

He strikes clean but his shot placement sucks and always finds the fielders rather than the gaps. If he can fix this who knows.

And we all know about his inability to rotate the strike which ensures he will never be a top ODI player. And that is harder to fix than learning how to find gaps
