What's new

Arsenal FC | 2020/21 Season

Excellent start to the season.

I think we will challenge for the top 4. But for us to get into the top 4 , we have so strengthen the midfield. Aouar and Partey would be excellent signings. Elneny and Torreira are not good enough. Wilock is not ready and Guendouzi seems to be on his way out.

We have to strengthen our midfield.

Story of the last decade+ really - Arsenal never really replaced Gilberto Silva. Instead of signing a world class holding midfielder in the mold of Kante, Fabinho, Fernandinho etc the club have faffed around with one inadequate replacement after another.

Top 4 race will be tougher than ever. With Arsenal looking good, Spurs making some intelligent signings, Leicester always being competitive it's like 5-6 teams closely poised for top 4 fight.

Still 20 days to go before window closes.

Still no news on Aubameyang's contract.

Arsenal's season will depend on whether he stays.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has signed a new three-year contract with us!

Having put pen to paper on his new deal, our 31-year-old captain wanted to break the news on Arsenal.com and on social media by telling fans LIVE that he was staying, with the ambition to lift more trophies and leave a long-term legacy.

The Gabon international signed from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 and has since made 111 appearances and scored 72 goals. In his first full season with us, Auba jointly won the Premier League Golden Boot with 22 goals.

Last season he netted 29 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice in the Heads Up FA Cup final victory against Chelsea. He kicked off this season in similar fashion, scoring against Liverpool in the Community Shield as we lifted the trophy on penalties.

“Signing for this special club was never in doubt," Auba said. "It’s thanks to our fans, my team-mates, my family and everybody at this club that I feel like I belong here. I believe in Arsenal. We can achieve big things together. We have something exciting here and I believe the best is to come for Arsenal.”

Mikel Arteta added: “It was important for Pierre-Emerick to stay with us. He’s a superb player with an incredible mentality. Being the player to have taken the least amount of time to reach 50 goals with this club tells you everything you need to know about him and his way of working.

"He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building. He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.”

Technical director Edu said: “It’s clear Auba loves the club and everything we stand for on and off the pitch. He’s obviously a very important part of the team so we’re all delighted he has committed his future to us. It’s a big boost for everyone – fans, team-mates and staff.”

Aresenal's best signing this summer! We're so lucky to have him play for us when he could easily have moved to a far superior club.

Full credit to Arteta for convincing him to stay.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see Aubameyang stay with us considering our lack of activity in the transfer market.

Aubameyang signing up is huge news for Arsenal.

Early days but they look to be a much stronger squad this season.

Arsenal are open to selling Torriera in order to fund a move for other midfield targets and free up squad space for arrivals.

Aston Villa have completed the signing of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Arsenal.

Sad to see Martinez go, but in the end it was the right decision. He wanted to play first-team football, and it's not really financially sensible to keep 2 valuable goalkeepers when we can easily cash in on one. He did very well when he came in, but it doesn't make sense to decide to sell Leno after he's been our top 2 players in the last couple seasons just because his backup came in and did amazing in 10 games.

Sad, but the right decision.

Barcelona made a concrete offer to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the transfer window before the striker signed a contract extension at Arsenal.

Arsenal are close to signing Dijon goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson

Saw a report from an extremely reliable outlet in France saying a bid of over 40 million Euros for Aouar will be made by Arsenal soon.

Saw a report from an extremely reliable outlet in France saying a bid of over 40 million Euros for Aouar will be made by Arsenal soon.

It's very possible, with 20m in for Martinez, and Torreira and Kolasinac looking close to exits. Fabrizio Romano confirmed Aouar would be happy to join, so if we move on one of those 2 then we should be able to secure him.

David Raya: Arsenal target goalkeeper but Brentford want season-long loan back

Brentford would only be prepared to sell David Raya to Arsenal if the Gunners loan him back to them for the rest of this season.

The Gunners are seeking a replacement for former substitute goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who completed a move to Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The Daily Telegraph reported Brentford rejected a £10m bid from Arsenal for Raya, who made 49 appearances last season as the West London club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League.

Sky Sports News has been told Brentford want to keep their squad together for another promotion push and the only player they are willing to part with now is Said Benrahma, who is a target for Crystal Palace.

Arsenal are close to signing Dijon goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson and hope to have a deal completed "as soon as possible".

Runarsson must be registered by midday on Friday to be part of the Arsenal squad for Saturday's game against West Ham United.

Sky Germany have reported that Kolasinac wants to return to Germany for family reasons.

Aubameyang’s deal is a huge coup for the club and he’s worth every penny of his ~£20m/year. . In recent years too many Arsenal players (like Van Persie and Sanchez for example) have run down their contracts and then left on the cheap. Nice to see someone bucking the trend.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had doubts striker would stay

Mikel Arteta said he had doubts when he became Arsenal boss last December that captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would agree a new contract.

The Gabon striker, 31, signed a three-year deal on Tuesday to end months of speculation over his Gunners future.

Aubameyang, whose previous deal expired next summer, has scored 72 times in 111 Arsenal games, including both goals in August's FA Cup final win over Chelsea.

"When I joined, I wasn't as positive as I was in recent weeks," said Arteta.

"Obviously, financially we were in a position that it was difficult to get where we wanted to get. I think Auba had his doubts as well at the time, but things evolved in a natural way.

"I had the feeling that the club wanted to move forward, I had the feeling that Auba wanted to stay here and we were just trying to apply those things together and that sometimes takes time.

"But the outcome is what we both wanted, so we are happy."

'We had to balance squad plans with finances'

While Aubameyang has remained with the club, long-serving goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez joined Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Argentine spent 10 years with the club - playing in the FA Cup final win as first choice Bernd Leno was injured - but Arteta says his £17m departure could help fund new signings.

"We have to find some balance between what we want to achieve with the squad and our finances, and it gets to a point where you have to make a decision whether to achieve certain things you have to sacrifice others," he said.

"But time will tell whether we are weaker or not. Obviously the recruitment we are planning to do to try to get our second goalkeeper hopefully will bring us a really good performance level."

Arteta also suggested a change in Martinez's expectations after playing his part on the pitch, led to a situation where neither he nor Leno would be happy as second choice.

"I was very clear with both of them that it wasn't a one and a two, they had to compete for their place like any other position in the team," he added.

"Bernd was superb before he got injured at Brighton and Emi was absolutely excellent with all the games he played and how much he helped us win the trophies.

"But at the end of the day that created a big competition, some big expectations from both of them and we had to deal with that."

I'm not sure with this club. While Mikel looks the man, you. Can't keep balancing the books. Losing AMN, Emi for relative peanuts just to bank on a Party or Aouar, unproven quantities in this country

Arteta praises Arsenal's mental strength as Nketiah earns late win over West Ham

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised his side's mental strength after Eddie Nketiah's late winner maintained their 100% start to the season against West Ham.

The result condemned the Hammers to a second successive defeat - the third time in the past four seasons they have lost their first two matches.

"What I like is the approach the boys had in the last 25 minutes where I could see they were a bit down and then they lift it," Arteta said.

"Probably a few months ago we would have drawn or lost that game and today we win it. In the end you have to find a way because there will be games like this through the season."

The Gunners largely controlled the opening stages of the contest and deservedly went ahead when Alexandre Lacazette headed in from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's chipped cross.

However, the Hammers, who always looked dangerous on the counter-attack, levelled just before the interval when Michail Antonio bundled in Ryan Fredericks' cross at the end of a sweeping move.

While Arsenal continued to enjoy more of the ball after the break, David Moyes' side created the better openings in front of goal with Antonio heading against the bar and seeing a scuffed close-range effort saved by Bernd Leno.

But, Nketiah's late tap-in from a Dani Ceballos pass ensured Arsenal continued their fine home record against the Hammers, having won 11 of the last 12 meetings at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal eke out another win

While there have been considerable signs of improvement at Arsenal since Arteta took charge last December this performance appeared to fizzle out after Lacazette had registered his 50th goal in all competitions for the club.

The crispness of passing, swift attacking and solidity at the back were all noticeably missing and it allowed West Ham a route back into the encounter.

However, the pleasing aspect for the Spaniard will be that his team were still capable of eking out a victory from an under-par showing.

Nervy at the back throughout, Arteta's side survived several close scares and struggled to break free of their lethargy despite the introduction of £72m winger Nicolas Pepe.

It took another substitute, Nketiah, to make the difference, with his tap-in coming eight minutes after he had come on to replace Lacazette.

Arsenal sign Dijon goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson

Arsenal have signed Iceland goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson on a four-year deal from French club Dijon.

The 25-year-old joins the Premier League side as cover for Bernd Leno, following the departure of Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa.

Runarsson joined Ligue 1 club Dijon in July 2018 and made 13 appearances last season.

"I'm just extremely happy and proud, it is a big day for me and my family," he said.

"I know it is going to be a lot of hard work, but I am ready to do everything I can to get the most amount of minutes as possible."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: "We want to create healthy competition for places and we look forward to seeing Alex bring further depth to the goalkeeping position."

Gunners knock out Leicester

Leicester 0-2 Arsenal

In the evening's only all-Premier League tie, Arsenal edged past Leicester thanks to a Christian Fuchs own goal and Eddie Nketiah's close-range finish.

There was little Fuchs could do as Nicolas Pepe's angled effort hit him after coming off the post and went in.

Nketiah settled the tie in the closing stages, stabbing in after fine work from substitute Hector Bellerin.

It continues Arsenal's strong start to the season, which has seen them lift the Community Shield and win back-to-back Premier League matches.

The Gunners will play Liverpool in round four if the Premier League champions beat League One Lincoln tonight.

Arsenal are interested in signing Jorginho from Chelsea before the transfer window closes next month

Atletico Madrid move for Lucas Torreira could unlock Thomas Partey deal for Arsenal

Atletico Madrid are confident of securing a loan deal for Lucas Torreira in a move that could hold the key to Arsenal's chances of signing Thomas Partey.

The two clubs are in talks over a move for the Uruguay midfielder but, while Atletico are pursuing a straight season-long loan, Arsenal are looking to sell the 24-year-old on a permanent deal or a loan with obligation to buy.

The funds from a sale to Atletico would allow Arsenal to part-fund the £45m release clause in Partey's contract, and they know that doing business with the La Liga club could smooth the path for them to sign the Ghana international.

Serie A side Torino remain keen on Torreira - who previously spent time in Italy with Pescara and Sampdoria - and a deal worth £22m is under discussion, while Sky in Italy also report that Fiorentina have manifested an interest.

Torreira is yet to feature in a matchday squad for Arsenal this season, and appears to be one of several players that are not in Arteta's plans.

Fellow midfielders Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi are also yet to play for Arsenal this campaign, with the duo understood to have potentially played their last games for the club.

As talks between the clubs continue, Arsenal are looking at alternatives like Chelsea's Jorginho and Lyon's Houssem Aouar.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was assistant to Pep Guardiola when Manchester City came close to signing Jorginho from Napoli in 2018.

However, the Italy international appears to be part of Frank Lampard's plans at Chelsea, and has captained the side in both of their Premier League games so far this season.

Liverpool vs Arsenal: Will the Gunners pull off another shock?

For the second year in a row, Liverpool and Arsenal are preparing to meet at Anfield in the third week of the Premier League season.

In August of last year, the encounter ended in a 3-1 win for Jurgen Klopp's side but the final scoreline could easily have been worse for Arsenal. Liverpool attempted 25 shots over the course of the 90 minutes. The two clubs appeared on different trajectories and so it proved.

This year, however, with Mikel Arteta at the helm in place of Unai Emery, Arsenal head into the game believing that downward trajectory has been reversed. The most recent meeting between the two sides, in the Community Shield last month, ended in a penalty shootout win for the Gunners. There was also the 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium in July.

Last season's Premier League table does not scream progress, of course. Arsenal finished the campaign in eighth place despite that win over Liverpool at the Emirates.

But there is certainly encouragement to be found in their record against the rest of the Premier League's big six since Arteta's appointment

As well as overcoming Liverpool twice, Arsenal have secured two victories over Chelsea and one over Manchester City. Their win rate in those games has jumped from just 18 per cent under Emery to an impressive 56 per cent under Arteta.

That improvement helped Arsenal win the FA Cup as well as the Community Shield, of course, and they now hope it will translate to the Premier League. Another positive result against Liverpool on Monday Night Football would certainly enhance the sense of optimism building among supporters.

It will not be easy against a side who have started the Premier League season in the same way they started the last. But Arteta has instilled belief in his players and recent evidence suggests this Arsenal side are in fact better-suited to playing against the bigger sides, when possession is typically tilted in the opposition's favour, than against the smaller ones.

Consider the fact that they have averaged just 38 per cent possession in the five games they have won against big-six sides under Arteta. Across the last five games they have lost, by contrast, they have averaged 57 per cent.

It may work to their advantage, then, that the figure is likely to be low at Anfield on Monday. Arsenal, so frail previously, look far more resilient now. Consistency remains elusive, but they have shown impressive defensive organisation against top opposition in recent months coupled with a willingness to "suffer", as Arteta puts it, in order to grind out results.

What's just as significant, though, is that while Arsenal still struggle to break down teams which are set up to sit behind the ball and frustrate them, they possess considerable threat on the counter-attack.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a player well known to Klopp having played under him at Borussia Dortmund, has scored five times in Arsenal's last three meetings with top-six rivals and almost all of those goals have come from counter-attacking scenarios.

More of the same will be required as they approach a testing run of fixtures but the form of their attacking players is certainly encouraging.

Aubameyang, so deadly at the end of last season, has continued to impress in the new one, following up his goal in the Community Shield with another in the opening day win over Fulham, then providing an assist against West Ham. Alexandre Lacazette, meanwhile, has scored two in two and so has Eddie Nketiah.

Arsenal are only a couple of players away from being genuine top 4 contenders. Replace Xhaka (sure he’s improved a lot but still isn’t world class) and Holding with a top notch central midfielder and central defender and then you’ll have a really good first XI. Thing is in today’s crazy market that would cost you £50m+ each and I doubt the Arsenal board would sanction it.

Arsenal travel to Anfield.

8pm kick off.

Good luck to all Arsenal fans. :klopp

We're getting a hammering. I'm not liking Arteta's selections, where he's opted for:

1. Saka ahead of AMN
2. Ceballos over Elneny
3. Dos Santos Magalhães over Luiz/Holding

Not a bad scorline for Arsenal, could easily have been 5/6-1. Liverpool totally dominated from start to finish, very disappointing from Arsenal, felt like playing a lower league team.

Arteta's tactics were very strange, he needs to understand the type of players he has. A dozen or so times he tried to play out of the back, only for his defenders to kick it long and lose the ball. Arsenal dont have the quaility of players to do this against the best pressing team in the world. Even at 2-1, the same tactic continued, making it easy for LFC to play the ball around and wind down the clock.

Arsenal need to go back to their old ways of solid defence and physical play, they are not LFC or Barca.

I still think Arsenal can finish top 4, Liverpool are way ahead of anyone else to judge their season from.

How is Maitland Niles still an arsenal player? Need to get rid of these losers if we are to move in the right direction. Lacazette fluffed the game at 2:1 down

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes his side took a "step forward" by beating Liverpool on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

After a goalless 90 minutes at Anfield, Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno saved two penalties in the shootout before Joe Willock scored the winning spot-kick.

Arsenal lost 3-1 in the Premier League at the Reds four days ago, and Arteta was pleased with his side's response.

"We still have lots to learn but we are on the right path," the Spaniard said.

EFL Cup quarter-final draw in full
"It is the third time in about eight weeks we have played against the best team in Europe, in my opinion, and it is a step forward for my team.

"We want to treat every competition as an opportunity to win a trophy, we have to do that for the club we represent and we will do that."

The teams produced a 5-5 thriller at Anfield in the competition last season before a penalty shootout, won by Liverpool, but this was a considerably less exciting match.

Both sides struggled for fluency after making numerous changes from their Premier League meeting on Monday.

But after Divock Origi and Harry Wilson saw efforts saved by Leno, Willock converted the decisive penalty.

Arsenal will now host Manchester City in the last eight, with all ties to be played in the week commencing 21 December.

Leno to Arsenal's rescue
Mohamed Elneny's miss in the shootout looked like it was going to be costly for the Gunners, but German goalkeeper Leno salvaged the situation for Arteta's side.

Leno's excellence was a theme of the match, particularly once Liverpool - who had made nine changes from their win on Monday - got to grips with the game towards the end of the first period.

The former Bayer Leverkusen keeper brilliantly parried new signing Diogo Jota's header and deserved some fortune when Takumi Minamino hit the crossbar with the follow up when he ought to have scored.

Arsenal were organised and disciplined in defence and despite Mohamed Salah joining Minamino and Jota in an experienced frontline for Jurgen Klopp's side, they could not find the breakthrough.

Liverpool were made to work hard for openings, and when they did create chances, Leno thwarted them as he produced superb saves to deny both Jota and Virgil van Dijk after the break.

The 28-year-old became the first Arsenal goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at Anfield since Vito Mannone in September 2012.

'I really have belief in Bernd' - what they said
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "If there would have been a winner in 90 minutes it should have been us but we are not in dreamland, you have to score. I liked a lot of parts of the game, we mixed it up a lot and I saw a proper performance, a lot of things we like on the pitch when you wear this wonderful shirt. A penalty shoot out is tricky, everyone knows. That is it."

What did the performance lack? "Goals. So many things are different when you mix it up in decisive positions especially. I really liked how the boys did it, there were a lot of good individual performances, it could have been a Premier League game but here or there we lacked the last pass. There were not a lot of chances in this game because there was a lot of work from both teams closing each other down.

On Xherdan Shaqiri's absence from the squad: "Some were not involved. It is the time of the year when some things happen in the background and you have to react - that is what we did."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am really happy with the performance. I think the boys were exceptional. We corrected a few things from Monday and it was superb.

"We competed much better, the level of aggression we had, the way we pressed them really high was exceptional. Bernd Leno was really good. When we needed him we had him. You need a top individual performance to win at Anfield and that is what we had tonight.

"I really have belief in Bernd. I know him really well and what he can give us. We didn't want Emiliano Martínez to go but it was probably the right thing for both parties to do. The gap towards Liverpool is still big. We will keep improving to try and reach their level."

On drawing his former club Manchester City: "I was waiting and enjoying the victory and then we have to play Manchester City. It is what it is, there are a lot of tough teams left in the competition and we will prepare for it."

What's next?
Liverpool are next in action when they travel to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, 4 October (19:15 BST). Arsenal host Sheffield United in the Premier League on the same day at 14:00 BST.

Mikel Arteta: Arsenal boss says final days of transfer window are a 'crucial moment'

Mikel Arteta says the final days of the transfer window are a "crucial moment" in Arsenal's season.

The Gunners have been linked with moves for Houssem Aouar, Thomas Partey and Jorginho while Sead Kolasinac, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi could all depart the Emirates before Monday's window shuts.

"It is a crucial moment," said Arsenal boss Arteta. "It defines the people, players, the balance and quality you're probably going to have for the rest of the season.

"We need to make some decisions in the next three days. Everything has been delayed so much, not only for us but every team.

"We will try to make the best possible decisions and at the end, whatever we have, we go for it fully convinced and prepared to have a good season."

Arteta sidestepped a question on whether he would be happy with his squad if there were no new signings made before 11pm on Monday night.

But he did defend Arsenal's approach to the transfer window as he works alongside technical director Edu to bring in the desired talent, with the transfer strategy fully supported by the club's owners.

"It is because we can't do more," he said when asked what happens if no new players come in.

"We are trying our maximum. We are maximising our resources, with full support from the owners as well with what we are trying to achieve. It is whether we can do it or not.

"I am very happy because the way we are acting and the way we are approaching and the way we are doing the process around the market, around the squad, the communication and link we have between myself, Edu, the board and the ownership is really good.

"I am really satisfied. I know that we are all trying our best to improve the team and trying to take the direction to achieve the goals that we want.

"After to achieve it or not, sometimes in a deal a lot of things can happen. You have three or four parties that have to be involved, but we are trying our best.

"I am really happy the way this link and communication is flowing at the moment."

Having knocked Liverpool out of the Carabao Cup on Thursday, earning them a quarter-final tie with Manchester City, Arsenal return to Premier League action on Sunday when they face Sheffield United, live on Sky Sports.

The Blades took four points off Arsenal last season but have lost all three Premier League games this campaign.

"The margins in this league between winning, drawing and losing are really small," said Arteta.

"The details are crucial. But they have generated big chances every game and have been really unlucky not to get anything out of them.

"We have experience of playing against them, both in the Premier League and the FA Cup. I know how difficult it is to play against them."

Arteta gave special mention to Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder and revealed he has been paying close attention to their progression from the Championship to a top-10 Premier League side.

"I started to analyse his team two years ago, to understand some of the things he is doing," said Arteta.

"He and the coaching staff have done a really good job. Not just for the way they play, because it's a very clear style, but also for the culture they created around the club, the spirit you can sense around the team and how they compete.

"It is remarkable what they have done."

Arsenal scored two quick-fire team goals to extend Sheffield United's point-less start to the Premier League season - although the Blades did manage their first goal.

The Gunners did not really get going until the 60th minute when Bukayo Saka celebrated his first England call-up with a header from Hector Bellerin's cross.

Three minutes later they doubled their lead with Nicolas Pepe's good run and finish into the bottom corner - finishing off a move with 19 passes.

They looked completely in control until David McGoldrick curled home the Blades' first league goal of the season.

But it was not enough to affect the outcome and United have now lost seven consecutive top-flight games for the first time since 1975.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal move onto six points from three games, having lost 3-1 to champions Liverpool last Monday.

It was far from Arsenal's best performance of the season - but they made it four wins from four games in all competitions, against teams other than Liverpool.

They could have been down to 10 men in the first half when David Luiz pulled back Oliver Burke as the Scot chased onto a poor back-pass, with Bernd Leno coming out of his box to clear, but the referee and the VAR team did not deem any punishment necessary.

It took 28 minutes for the game's first attempt as Eddie Nketiah flicked a header towards goal. That was the longest wait for a shot in any Premier League game in 2020.

The Gunners had the better chances in the first half but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced a good diving save from Aaron Ramsdale and then hit an acrobatic volley at the goalkeeper.

Sheffield United had a red card let-off of their own as Sander Berge was only booked for a lunging tackle on Aubameyang, who was hurt but able to carry on.

Their two strikes were worth the wait, the result of fine passing moves.

Aubameyang lifted a pass over the top to Bellerin, whose clipped cross was headed into the top corner by Saka at the far post.

And then substitute Pepe played a one-two with Bellerin before running at the Blades defence and slotting home via the base of the post.

Their main disappointment will have been losing a clean sheet and causing a few tense moments late on when the game looked safe.

Sheffield United's worrying form continues

The Blades' European dream was finished by three consecutive defeats at the end of last season - and that losing run has carried over into this campaign.

After failing to score in their opening three league games for the first time in their history, Chris Wilder spent a club-record £23.5m on Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster - although he was not registered in time to make his debut at Emirates Stadium.

They ended the game with six shots, as many as Arsenal, but few of them were clear chances.

McGoldrick's high and wide effort was their only shot in the first half, but the Republic of Ireland striker did eventually hit the target with a fine 20-yard effort from George Baldock's pass.

The 32-year-old has only scored three Premier League goals in his career, all against the big six - having netted twice against Chelsea last season.

But they would not have deserved an equaliser and begin a top-flight season with four defeats for the first time since 1966.

Will Wilder be involved in the transfer market on deadline day on Monday? He may have to be if they are to avoid second-season syndrome.

Match stats - Wilder's worst run since Halifax in 2004
Arsenal have won nine of their last 11 home Premier League matches (D2) since a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in Mikel Arteta's first home game in charge in December.
Sheffield United have lost seven consecutive league matches for only the second time in their history, with their other seven-game losing run coming between August and September 1975.
Arsenal have won nine of their last 11 home league matches against Sheffield United (D2) since a 1-0 defeat in August 1971.
Nicolas Pepe's goal for Arsenal came after a build-up of 19 passes, the most before a Premier League goal this season; indeed, of the nine goals scored this season with 10 or more passes in the build-up, four have been scored by the Gunners.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has lost seven consecutive league matches as a manager for the first time since a run of 10 defeats in a row as Halifax Town manager between February and April 2004.
Only Liverpool (34) have won more home Premier League points than Arsenal (29) since Mikel Arteta's first home game in charge last December.
This was Oliver Burke's 18th Premier League appearance, with the Sheffield United player yet to end on the winning side (D3 L15). Burke has played more games in the Premier League without winning than any other player in the history of the competition.
Sheffield United scored their first Premier League goal of the season, with David McGoldrick's goal their 31st attempt of the campaign.

What's next?
Arsenal visit Manchester City in the league next Saturday (17:30 BST), while Sheffield United host fellow strugglers Fulham at 15:00 that day.

Partey time at Arsenal?

Arsenal are trying to conclude a deal for long term target Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid. The Ghanian has a release clause of £45m.Lucas Torreira likely to go on loan in the opposite direction to Atletico.

Thomas Partey: Arsenal expected to pay £45m release clause for Atletico Madrid midfielder

Arsenal are expected to meet Atletico Madrid's £45m asking price for Thomas Partey as the Gunners look to secure a Deadline Day deal for the midfielder.

Partey has been linked with Arsenal throughout the window and, although his £45m release clause has been an issue, the Gunners are hoping to free up wages and space in the squad before the window shuts at 11pm.

Matteo Guendouzi is on the verge of joining Hertha Berlin on loan, Lucas Torreira is set to sign for Atletico Madrid on loan, Bayer Leverkusen remain in talks over Sead Kolasinac while the Gunners are listening to offers for Sokratis Papastathopoulos. They have not received any bids for Mesut Ozil, despite Mikel Arteta casting doubts over his future.

Arteta said at the weekend Arsenal were doing what they can to finalise transfers ahead of the deadline - and was confident deals can be done - while Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth has confirmed that a Deadline Day move is on the cards.

"Look, throughout this whole transfer window we know that Arsenal have been after a midfielder," he said on Monday. "The one that never went away was Thomas Partey.

"We know that Arsenal have been interested in him for the whole window, the issue was the release clause as Atletico will not negotiate with any club on the release clause, so if someone wants to sign him they must pay £45m.

"Now, it is our understanding that Arsenal are pushing once again for Thomas Partey. There is an expectation - not 100 per cent - but there is an expectation that they will meet that £45m release clause.

"All of the talk during the window was how they generate that money. Well today, they are looking to offload players to fund that move for Partey.

"Torriera [to Atletico] is only a loan. They would get some sort of loan fee for that, but more importantly they get his wages off the bill. Guendouzi is the same.

"The other one is Kolasinac. Leverkusen want to buy him and Arsenal want to sell him. We think it's around £10m. Leverkusen can't afford that fee with the wages, so they are looking into a loan with an obligation-to-buy option.

"All of that put together - plus with the sale of Emiliano Martinez - it looks like Arsenal are getting those funds together, and we expect them to meet Partey's £45m release clause.

"Time is running out, 11pm is the deadline, they are looking to get it sorted so Partey can become an Arsenal player."

The Gunners were previously interested in Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. A deal for the Italy international is thought to be unlikely, but not impossible.

Houssem Aouar, meanwhile, is no longer thought to be a target after he declared his desire to stay with Lyon. "I want to continue the adventure with the club who raised me," Aouar told Telefoot over the weekend.

Thomas Partey: Arsenal's £45m midfielder is a 'physical marvel' who 'does everything well'

After joining Mallorca on loan from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2013, a 20-year-old Thomas Partey would always introduce himself with a smile and the same phrase.

"I'm Thomas Partey," he would say, "not fiesta!"

The play on words - fiesta means party in Spanish - immediately endeared him to his new colleagues. "Whenever our paths crossed in the years after that, he would always say that same thing and laugh," José Luis Oltra, Mallorca's manager at the time, chuckles down the phone. But it was Partey's footballing ability that made the most lasting impression.

Partey arrived on the island as a highly-rated but untested midfielder. He left it a year later having taken an important step on a road that would eventually lead him to the top. From Mallorca, he went to Almeria, again on loan, before returning to Atletico to become a key player under Diego Simeone.

Now, the Premier League beckons with Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta hopes Partey will transform his midfield and those who have followed his career from the start can understand why.

Precision passing, tactically aware

At Atletico, his ability was apparent long before he was sent on loan. In fact, Javi Baños, a former youth coach there, only needed to see him play once, in a friendly for their U18s against Getafe, to be convinced that his trial period should be made permanent.

"You could quickly see that he was a player with attributes which were very advanced for his age," Baños tells Sky Sports.

"Above all, it was the precision of his passing. He was very effective in terms of his delivery. He also covered a lot of ground and positioned himself well on the pitch tactically."

Until then, Partey had been playing for a side called Tema Youth in Ghana, where he came to the attention of an agent named Jose Jimenez, who offered to organise a trial for him at Atletico. Partey, determined to seize the opportunity, would later recall packing his bags and leaving without even telling his family.

It was a leap of faith but he would not regret it. Partey signed for Atletico soon after his trial and before long he was excelling in their academy.

"Atletico Madrid always have strong players in their youth teams," says Baños. "Over the years I was fortunate enough to coach guys like Lucas Hernandez and David de Gea. But the truth is that Thomas was a player who made the difference. He had great potential."

Partey was swiftly promoted to Atletico's Juvenil A (U19) side and soon enough Simeone and his assistant German Burgos became aware of the youngster's talents. At the end of his first year there, Partey even joined the senior squad on a pre-season trip to Colombia.

"He was a very attractive player to them because he was different for his age," says Baños. "He was a very disciplined player, as he is now, and he was very grateful and respectful too.

"I always remember that every day after training, he would shake your hand and thank you for the session and the advice you had given him. He has always been a very good player to have in the dressing room."

Those traits are now part of the appeal to Arteta, who values team spirit and togetherness highly, but for Partey at that age, the competition for places at Atletico was such that it was not easy to see a route into the first-team. Simeone could already call on experienced trio Gabi, Tiago and Mario Suarez in central midfield. Koke and Saul Niguez were next in line.

Learning during loan spells

So, at the start of the season in which Atletico would go on to win an historic title, Partey ended up joining Mallorca, who had just been relegated to Spain's second division after a 16-year spell in La Liga.

Partey's only previous senior experience had come with Atletico's B team in Spain's third tier but he quickly established himself there, displacing experienced club captain Jose Luis Marti in central midfield and going on to make 38 appearances over the course of the campaign, scoring five goals.

"He ended up being an undisputed starter," Oltra tells Sky Sports. "He worked hard and showed very good things."

For all his undoubted quality, however, Partey still had much to learn.

"There were times when he would lose the ball in dangerous areas, close to our central defenders," says Oltra.

"He found turning in that zone difficult and the first pass wasn't always easy for him. He made some errors but we were always on top of him, showing him videos. He was very receptive to our advice and to everything we tried to teach him.

"He already had a lot of great attributes, but he was a boy who wanted to grow and improve. He was an excellent professional, which is vital for any footballer. He looked after himself, he loved football and he lived a very organised life. Those factors have helped him reach the level he's at now."

Partey soon cut out the mistakes and there was a concerted effort to bulk up physically too. "He is a physical marvel now but he didn't have the strength he has now back then," adds Oltra. "He worked hard on that, and on his stamina as well. His ability to withstand pressure improved and soon he was able to do more things with the ball, like trying long-range shots."

That eye for goal would become a feature of Partey's game - "he now scores six or seven times per season, which is great for someone who starts the build-up play and operates in front of the defence," notes Baños - but the circumstances were not easy at Mallorca. Instead of the anticipated fight for promotion, the season became a brush with relegation.

The exposure helped Partey's development, though, and the same was true of his season with Almeria in La Liga. It turned into another battle against the drop - a battle they eventually lost - but Partey made 32 appearances, scoring four goals and impressing again.

"He's a boy who understands football well," reflected former Almeria manager Sergi Barjuan in a recent interview with El País. "I used him as an attacking midfielder, a central midfield and even a centre-back."

Partey was developing well, his ability to slot into different positions a reflection of his tactical intelligence, but back at Atletico the competition for places remained fierce. In the two seasons after his loan spell with Almeria, Partey made only nine La Liga starts for Simeone's side and many of them came on the right rather than in the middle.

Another player might have sought an exit. Instead, Partey resolved to prove himself.

"Thomas has good people around him," says Baños. "His agents always give him good advice and he's a player who knew how to wait for his chance. There were players who were ahead of him and he understood that. He is very serious player and what's important is that he's also a team player."

Atleti breakthrough, Simeone praise

Partey's versatility has long been a useful asset to Simeone, but last season, following the departure of Rodri to Manchester City, the Ghanaian was finally able to nail down his preferred position in the side, as a deep-lying central midfielder.

The role came with considerable defensive responsibility but Partey continued to contribute in an attacking sense too.

"I think the thing he has improved most in recent years is his final pass," says Baños. "He is not just a defensive midfielder. He is now a more adventurous player, with freedom in his movements and scoring ability."

Oltra sums it up succinctly: "He's a boy who does everything well."

His completeness could be seen throughout last season but it was particularly apparent during Atletico's Champions League campaign.

Partey, who shone in both legs of the last-16 win over Liverpool, made more tackles than any of his team-mates during Atletico's run to the quarter-finals and yet also ranked top for chances created from open play and passes into the final third. Only two Atletico players attempted more shots.

It's little wonder Simeone has come to value him so highly. "Thomas is an extraordinary player," he said last year.

More recently, the Atletico boss added Partey is good enough to play for "any of the best teams in Europe". "Thomas is the one who best understands his position," he said. "The transition from defence to attack, shooting, scoring, providing assists and playing passes between the lines."

Suited to the Premier League

His Atletico team-mates feel the same way.

"I'd seen him play for Atletico but I didn't realise how good he is," said Kieran Trippier, who joined the club from Tottenham last year, during a recent appearance on The Beautiful Game podcast. "He's unbelievable, his physicality, how he breaks up play. Technically he's got everything. I don't think he would have a problem with the Premier League."

It's a view shared by Baños, who admits he would be happy to see him join Arsenal having also worked as a scout for the Gunners.

"I have always said that he is a perfect player for the Bundesliga or the Premier League because of his style of play," he says. "He is a player who is ready and well-suited to succeed at a club like Arsenal."

Baños can testify to Partey's leadership as well as his talent. Baños is involved at Alcobendas Sport, a fourth-tier club based in Madrid in which Partey and his representatives have a stake and where, with the 27-year-old's guidance, talented young players from Ghana and other African nations are offered the opportunity to launch their careers in Europe.

"He wanted to help others do what he did," explains Baños, "to bring over players from his country and give them the opportunity to succeed in Spain."

Partey has certainly made the most of his own opportunities. There is no question about that. But those mentoring duties will have to take a backseat now that a move to Arsenal has materialised. It is time for Thomas Partey - "not fiesta!" - to take the next step of his journey in the Premier League.

How Arsenal bypassed Atletico to get Partey

Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth explains how Arsenal dealt with La Liga, rather than Atletico Madrid, to seal the signing of Thomas Partey:

"A constant throughout this transfer window has been Thomas Partey. The one constant from the Atletico Madrid side was they would not be negotiating unless a club met the £45m release clause. The way the release clause works in Spain, Arsenal didn't have to negotiate directly with Atletico Madrid.

"All they had to do was get one of their lawyers or officials to go to the La Liga headquarters, put down £45m and they had permission to talk to Thomas Partey."
https://www.skysports.com/football/...er-a-physical-marvel-who-does-everything-well

As soon as Thomas Partey was confirmed as an Arsenal player late on transfer deadline day, the blame campaign began.

Atletico Madrid were upset because they claim the Premier League club did not make a courtesy call to let them know they were willing to pay the Ghana midfielder's 50m euros (£45m) buyout clause.

The Gunners had wanted to negotiate a fee for the 27-year-old throughout the window but Atletico were unwilling to enter discussions, as they had no interest in accepting an offer for him.

It was not an obligation for Arsenal to get in touch on deadline day, of course, as all they had to do was deposit a cheque for that value in the offices of La Liga, which they did in the last hour of the transfer window on Monday.

Having recently been in discussions with them to agree a loan deal for Lucas Torreira, however, the Spanish club expected more of the Gunners, but they finally found out about it via La Liga once the deposit had been made.

In reality, they were well aware this had been more than just a possibility.

Why? Because the negotiations for a new contract with Partey had broken down a long time ago.

Atletico offered 3.5m euros net per year before the coronavirus pandemic, but that was rejected. And after football resumed the message from the club was that they could not afford even that.

The fact is that Partey felt he had been badly treated by Atletico. He was the worst-paid player in the squad, with a modest 1.8m euros net per year, and he felt he deserved more, considering that by the summer he had played at least 42 games over the previous three seasons.

Atletico are, in reality, more upset with him than they are with Arsenal.

The allegedly "irreparable" relationship with the English club will be forgotten once new business has to be done between the two parties.

But Atletico feel that after nine years in Madrid, five in the first team, it was unacceptable for Partey to arrange a medical in Madrid without telling his club and, basically, to leave without a proper send-off.

The player was advised that his departure was not going to be followed by a homage, so he resolved to do everything quietly. Plus, Atletico got 50m euros, which is more than welcome in a time of huge difficulties for them.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone will not forget, though.

He feels he has done a lot for the player, giving him the confidence he needed at a time when media and fans were unsure of what he could add to the team.

Partey has humbly accepted whatever advice Simeone has given him in the past and his coach has certainly improved the player.

In recent weeks, the message Simeone got from him was that he was going to stay.

But to understand why Partey told him that, I refer you back to the contractual situation and the suggestion that, however he left, he was not going to be seen as a hero. Quite the contrary.

Good summer signings in Gabriel and Partey, finally gives us power and stability at CB and CM.

We should have ozil, Sokratis, mustafi off the wage bill next year, add to that gendouzi and torriera as well and Arsenal should slowly be getting rid of all the deadwood at the club.

Just a top class play maker needed, i would like to see Emile smith rowe given a chance onces hes fully fit.

If Athletico wanted this to be dealt with in an Amicable manner, they should have sat down on the table with Arsenal to negotiate a deal. Partey’s market value is reported to be £36m and Athletico were not in the mood to discuss anything because of the £45m release clause. They could have found an in between way with Arsenal paying £25m and Toreira as part of the deal, but clearly that wasn’t going to be the case. Even a £40m agreement would have done no harm in relations as long as it was negotiated like good businessmen

Arsenal did nothing wrong. They followed the Law and deposited the money Athletico wanted. Bunch of cry babies on the other side of Madrid I see

Also, if Athletico are so hurt by Partey’s departure...why did they not pay the guy the money he wanted to stay with them? He was one of the lowest paid first team players at the club apparently. Nothing was stopping them offering the £200-300k he was seeking and they could have kept him.

Now that he is gone, he will be vilified. What nonsense!

completely agree.

Athletic had their chances and for whatever reasons didn't act.
They can go and stuff it.

Kieran Tierney, who's on international duty with Scotland, has been told to self-isolate for 14 days after he was in close contact with a player who tested positive for Covid-19.

Means he will now miss the game away to Man City on the 17th. Big, big blow.

Totally agree. He was treated disgustingly. Another Spanish club that treats black African footballers like dirt.

Arsenal have confirmed that Mesut Ozil will not feature in the Europa League this season after being left out of their squad alongside two senior defenders.

Something very bizarre going on.

He (and another player) was apparently told to self isolate because he was in the room of the player who tested positive playing video games. However, his test has come back negative, yet he was still told to self isolate.

Arsenal made a statement saying they were trying to figure out what was going on. I imagine if they test him again in a couple days and it's still negative then surely he is virus-free and should be allowed to play.

Thomas Partey: Arsenal's Deadline Day signing part of seven-month plan, says Edu

Arsenal's technical director Edu has revealed the club's Deadline Day signing of Thomas Partey was the culmination of a long-term recruitment plan.

Arsenal signed the Ghana international from Atletico Madrid on Monday after meeting his £45m release clause on the final day of the summer window.

Edu confirmed Partey was a target for Arsenal when they first drew up their recruitment plan at the beginning of the year.

"One day I would like to show the fans how we work, or how we worked, because if you saw my plan six or seven months ago when I did it with Mikel (Arteta), Thomas was there already," he told the club's website.

"So you see how many months we had to try to find the right player for the club.

"So many things to do, so many meetings, we had to see how we were going to buy the player, if we had the financial situation to buy the player, the legal process, the financial process, talk to the player, talk to the agent, so there are a lot of things around this but in the end we did it!"

Edu, who was a midfielder in Arsenal's 'Invincibles' in 2003/04, also revealed how investment from club owner Stan Kroenke allowed Arsenal to arrange the financial package needed to sign Partey.

"To be fair, it is a huge investment for this moment which we are in now and of course we need the green light from them," he said.

"When I showed my plan to them, they were so excited, they understand the plan and pressed the green button and then I felt very, very confident because it is not easy to invest a lot of money in this period of time."

Partey is a huge upgrade on anything else arsenal has in midfield and should help the team dominate games more as well as provide protection of the back 4 and provide a ball carrying threat going forward which arsenal hasnt had for 15 years.

Thomas Partey really can be a game-changing signing. Thanks to his unreal defensive screening and energy, we can finally move on from the back 3 to play an extra offensive player and be more dangerous going forward, as we have been very flat recently.

It's not just his defensive ability, he's so talented on the ball in tight spaces, but he's been restricted by Simeone's system. Away to the big teams where you'll have very little time on the ball, he has the ability to bring the ball through the lines in tight spaces. Just imagine how we could have hurt that ultra high Liverpool back line if we actually had presence in midfield.

Really hope he can elevate Arsenal to strong top 4 favourites.

France midfielder Houssem Aouar, 22, believes staying at Lyon this summer will prove to be the right decision after he was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.

New Arsenal signing Thomas Partey wants to help the club get "back where they belong" and win the Premier League title.

Ghana midfielder Partey, 27, joined the Gunners in a £45m deal from Atletico Madrid in the transfer window.

Arsenal have been champions of England 13 times, with their last title coming in 2003-04.

"Everybody is wanting to win all the trophies that can be won. That’s my goal also," Partey said.

“It’s something that’s difficult but we're working towards it and we're ready. We have to go all out and try and achieve all I have said.

“That’s the objective of the club and myself. We have to get back to where we belong.”

Since their last Premier League success, the Gunners have won the FA Cup five times, including last season when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final in August.

However, they only finished eighth in the league and have not played in the Champions League since 2016-17.

“It’s a great challenge,” added Partey, who won the Europa League and Uefa Super Cup, and played in the 2016 Champions League final with Atletico.

“I want to experience new challenges. I’m ready to give it my all and help this club.

“They [manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu] told me about their plans and it was so exciting so I had to accept it. I feel great to be here.”

Arsenal have won three of their four Premier League games in 2020-21, are fourth in the table and play at Manchester City on Saturday.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has not ruled out the possibility of Thomas Partey and Kieran Tierney playing against Manchester City on Saturday.

Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out of Manchester City's Saturday night Premier League game at home to Arsenal.

So no Aguero, De Bruyne or Jesus for City. Drew 1-1 with Leeds last game, and lost 5-2 to Leicester at home the week before.

Meanwhile the mood around Arsenal is just the opposite, we are on 3 wins from 4 EPL games this season, just signed one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and many of our key players didn't have international duty and are fully rested.

We are obviously very unlikely to win, but this is surely the best chance in a long time for Arsenal to go to the Etihad and perhaps get a result.

No noise from certain Arsenal fans I see.

This is their 29th consecutive away loss vs a top team.

Arteta made some selection mistakes.

Arteta made some selection mistakes.

I’m here and I was extremely disappointed.

William through the middle when Man Fity we’re playing their second string / new defence was one mistake.
The biggest negative was no change in system when there was twenty minutes to go.

However irrespective of the this result, I thinks we’re still heading the the right direction and top 4 would be a great achievement, beyond expectations.

Did Arsenal sell the wrong goalkeeper?

Leno was shambolic the other night. And in general Martinez looked way better during the latter stages of last season vs what Leno has looked like this season.

Another reason why Ozil should be part of the setup - even if he’s just used as a sub with 10-15 minutes to go.I guess it’s a pointless subject to debate over now as it won’t be happening.

Exactly, of course he should be at least on the bench because he can't do much worse than what we're currently doing offensively.

However, I'm so tired of this conversation at this point. We have no idea what has gone on behind the scenes, if they've fallen out, his attitude in training, conversations with the club about his activism. Either way, he's done in an Arsenal shirt.

We need to look for other solutions within the squad. We need something more in the midfield, a midfield of Partey, Xhaka, Ceballos is far too static. Maybe the solution is to put a Saka or AMN (who's supposed to be a midfielder) in there with 2 of the main ones to introduce a little more progressive ball carrying and movement.

Oh and also, PLEASE play Aubameyang down the middle with proper wingers down the outside.

We didn't need Raul Sanllehi to bring in Partey. Hope you can now see we are better off without the former.

I have high hopes in the midfielder having seen his Champions League stats for Atletico last season.

Hasan123 your thoughts on Partey?

Edu and co. did a good job by signing Partey but he alone makes no difference. This Arsenal team plays the most pathetic and impotent football in the league with no creativity, and the board thinks signing a DM will make a difference.

They have let Arteta and the fans down by failing to meet the demands of Lyon for Aouar. This was Arsenal’s chance to sign him because next summer onwards, the European heavyweights with greater financial muscle will target him.

The club is in shambles run by the most incompetent and clueless idiots excluding Arteta whose hands are tied.

I largely agree with this but Arteta is also paying the price for playing Aubameyang out of position. He's trying to get the best out of Lacazette who really should have been sold in the summer because he simply isn't good enough.

Apparently, Artera was more interested in Aouar than Partey but Edu overruled him to seal signing of the latter. I'm intrigued to know if you had the choice to pick between these two who would you have gone for? Hasan123 - let me know your thoughts on this as well.

Definitely Aouar.

The complete lack of creativity is Arsenal’s biggest problem at the moment.

I would have preferred Aouar to Partey due to our lack of creativity and I knew Ozil would not be featuring. Arteta has given us a good stability and structure at the back but we need to be dominating teams lower down the table. And we should be creating chances regularly against them. Arteta needs to show he can do this now to take us to the next level.

Arsenal 3-0 Dundalk: Gunners win well against Irish side after tough start

Arsenal's squad players impressed boss Mikel Arteta as they eventually broke Dundalk's resistance to win their Europa League group game at Emirates Stadium.

Eddie Nketiah pounced from close range to give the Gunners the lead and Joe Willock blasted a shot into the roof of the net 125 seconds later.

Nicolas Pepe's brilliant effort from the edge of the box seconds after the restart killed the game off.

They cruised after that but could not add a fourth against the Irish side.

"We gave a chance to a lot of players who haven't played many minutes this season and it is something really positive because they showed they are well-prepared, they are at it, and they are ready when we need them," Arteta said.

"They are always in the frame to play. It is not if we lose or win, it is what they bring to the team."

It was a stark contrast to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho's criticism of his fringe players as Arsenal's north London rivals lost 1-0 to Royal Antwerp.

Arsenal - who had never faced a side from the Republic of Ireland before - have now won both their opening Europa League games, while Dundalk have lost both of theirs.

Dundalk made a bit of history as the first team in the 10 years of the Europa League not to commit a single foul in a game.

Arsenal handed a debut to Iceland goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson, a summer signing from Dijon, and he played behind a makeshift central defence.

The Gunners have three centre-backs injured, including David Luiz, with another two not registered for the Europa League.

As a result Shkodran Mustafi, making his first start since July, began in a back three along with midfielder Granit Xhaka and Sead Kolasinac, who is usually a left-back but has played in the centre for Arsenal several times.

But they all had a quiet day - Dundalk only had two touches in Arsenal's box - and it was the hosts' fringe forwards who took their chance.

It took 33 minutes for the Gunners to have a shot on target, with Kolasinac's header tipped over the bar by Gary Rogers.

The breakthrough came seven minutes later. Rogers flapped at a corner which hit team-mate Daniel Cleary and Nketiah beat Brian Gartland to the loose ball to score from close range.

Two minutes later and the Gunners had control. A misplaced pass let Nketiah run forward. He found Pepe, who had an effort blocked, but Willock controlled the ball and blasted a shot into the roof of the net.

It was only another couple of minutes of football later - albeit after the half-time break - when the best goal of the day came.

Pepe got the ball on the edge of the box, rolled it away from a defender and smashed a perfect effort into the top corner.

At that stage a rout looked likely but Dundalk held firm with Ainsley Maitland-Niles having the only effort on target after that.

Arteta said: "I'm really pleased with the way we went about the game.

"Our attitude from the beginning was spot on, we attacked and created a lot of situations inside the box."

Dundalk deserve credit
Filippo Giovagnoli
Former Serie C defender Filippo Giovagnoli was managing a senior club for only the 11th time
Dundalk's run to the Europa League group stage has come despite domestic struggles. They have won only three of 11 League of Ireland games since the restart, losing their title to Shamrock Rovers, and are not certain of a European place next year.

Their manager is unknown Italian Filippo Giovagnoli, a former AC Milan summer camp coach who had never managed a senior team until his appointment in August.

He was not expected to be in the dugout - he sat out their 2-1 defeat by Molde last week - because he does not have the Uefa Pro Licence.

Shane Keegan, the club's opposition analyst, was named as manager for the game in the Uefa team sheet - but Giovagnoli appeared on the touchline for the game.

They had the opening chance with Patrick McEleney's long-range effort after three minutes tipped around the post by Runarsson.

The Lilywhites defended resolutely for 40 minutes but Arsenal's opening two goals came from their mistakes and there was no way back after that.

Giovagnoli said: "I want to congratulate my team and all the players for the way they collaborated defensively, their focus and everything.

"We had to suffer, we know, but I think we were organised defensively.

"A few things went well, we tried on three occasions to build up like we prepared, we tried to high press them when they were playing with the goalie, to go man to man and be really aggressive when their goalie had the ball."

Several players were withdrawn with Sunday's league game against St Patrick's Athletic in mind. Among them were Michael Duffy, who is such a big Arsenal fan he took 'Thierry' as his Confirmation name after Gunners legend Henry.

Limerick's 1-1 Uefa Cup draw in Southampton in 1981 remains the only time in 13 attempts a side from the Republic of Ireland have not lost in England.

Nketiah scores, Arsenal win - match stats
Arsenal have lost just one of their 13 games in cup competitions under Mikel Arteta (W10 D2), a 2-1 defeat against Olympiakos in February.
Arsenal have won all nine games in which Eddie Nketiah has found the back of the net (10 goals).
Goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson is the first Icelandic player to appear for Arsenal since Olafur Ingi Skulason against Wolves in December 2003 in the League Cup.

Mikel Arteta: Arsenal manager targets 90-100 goals to become 'top team'

Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to score more goals to complement their impressive defensive record this season if they are to compete with the best in the Premier League.

Arsenal have conceded seven goals from their opening seven league games - the best of all 20 top-flight clubs - but the Arteta admits his side need to evolve in attack.

A 4-1 win against Molde in the Europa League on Thursday underlined the goalscoring potential within the Arsenal squad but Gunners manager Arteta is aware consistency against different styles of opposition is required if they are to be a "top team".

"To get that balance right is not easy. Considering the fixtures we have played this season; playing Liverpool three times, Manchester City and Leicester. It is not easy," Arteta said.

"It is something that we have been working on the last two weeks. You could see last night that we were much more fluent in attack. We scored the goals and we had more opportunities.

"It is part of the team that still has to evolve because we haven't played many games against low blocks. That is something we have to improve on.

"To be a top team you have to score 90-100 goals if you want to be competing with the top guns. It is a challenge for us and an area we have to improve and get better."

Like I said...premature

Anyone who understands football can see that Arteta has a tremendous future as manager and Arsenal are certainly very lucky to have him.

If he didn’t leave City he would have been Pep’s successor.

The problem with Arsenal at the moment is that the team is horribly short of creativity. In spite of conceding 3 goals last night, Arsenal’s defensive record is not bad.

Until yesterday, Arsenal had conceded the least number of goals in the league this season which is an illustration of the defensive organization that Arteta has achieved.

Arsenal’s major problem is the complete lack of creativity and dysfunctional forwards. Lacazette is rubbish, Willian is finished and Pepe is mentally weak.

In the midfield, Ceballos is the only creative player but the problem is that he thinks he is Iniesta. I am tired of seeing him try to pull off fancy flicks and tricks instead of keeping it simple.

Saka is the only saving grace at the moment. As far as Aubameyang is concerned, he is a lethal finisher but he is not in the game otherwise. Everyone knows that, so if there is a severe lack of creativity he cannot make an impact.

Once Ozil’s contract expires and the wages finally free up, Arteta needs to be backed in the market to invest in better attackers and creativity midfielders.

Arteta can win Arsenal the league by 2024-25, but he needs proper backing in the market. You give this Arsenal team to Klopp and he will finish 20+ points behind City like he did early in his Liverpool career before he got to spend money.

I think it is okay to question and criticize Arteta as he has made mistakes. We do have to remember he is learning on the job as it his first job. But I think to say we should have gotten x manager or he should be sacked is not fair. He has only been in charge for under a year. He had improved our defence and certain players . Most Arsenal fans thought that wasn't possible. He needs more time and transfer windows to get us to the level we want to be.

I won't be screaming Arteta out at this stage. I am fully behind him. I wanted him as manager. But our lack of creativity is a worry and if he doesn't get this sorted by the end of the season, his job could be in danger as our fans aren't patient and it seems as though our board react to fan pressure.

Didn't expect Villa to thrash Arsenal like that, great performance. Watkins has been enjoying himself
