Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Liverpool will resort to long ball game and hitting on counter, there midfield is non-existent. I hope Arteta and team don't fall into trap of giving Liverpool space in and behind. Arsenal should dominate the midfield so need to be smart and clinical on Sunday

Arsenal’s key defender William Saliba has missed their last two games of the crucial Premier League title race run-in.

Saliba has been a crucial part of the Gunners’ success this season, making his name as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

However, he has been absent from the wins over Crystal Palace and Leeds after picking up a back injury against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League.

Arsenal will be concerned that Saliba may miss even more games at the tail end of the season, however, manager Mikel Arteta has hinted at a possible return.

When will Saliba return?

There is currently no set date for Saliba to return.

He has been undergoing further assessment to determine how severe his back injury is and he rested over the international break.

Now Arteta has spoken at his press conference on Friday and seemed to hint at a possible return to action for the Frenchman.

When asked about his injured players and specifically Saliba, the Gunners boss said: “No, no real changes with the rest of the players that were still injured.

“We have some hope with one of them who will maybe be able to train but we’ll see.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expects the atmosphere away to Liverpool on Sunday to be like a "jungle".

Arsenal last won at Anfield in 2012 and before their last league visit Arteta played 'You'll Never Walk Alone' on a sound system at the training ground.

The Gunners lost 4-0 that day but will return to Anfield eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

"You cannot train the players in the zoo and then go to the jungle on Sunday," said Arteta.

"It's impossible. You have to expose yourself. You have to prepare the players. You have to tell them what they're going to be facing and you have to recognise that."

The Spaniard added: "The team is full of enthusiasm and positivity.

"We know that we have a big challenge but it is a big opportunity to go to Anfield and do something we haven't done in many years and that is what [has been] driving the team the last few days."

During the first half of Arsenal's last league trip to Anfield in November 2021 Arteta and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp were booked for clashing on the touchline with the score at 0-0.

Asked if he would react in that manner again, Arteta said: "I reacted to defend our players the best possible way but I don't like seeing myself like this so hopefully not.

"It happens in football and after that we hugged each other and moved on. The last time we were together nothing happened.

"I have full respect and admiration for what they've done. We've moved on."

Got a weird feeling City will drop points tonight against Southampton

Arsenal have to lay down the marker. Only way is to command victories a la Leicester in a title chase.

Assuming Saliba is injured, my team would be: Ramsdale, White, Holdini, Gabriel, Zinny, Partey, Xhaka, Ode, Saka, Jesus, Martinelli

Every title winning side has a key victory in the final fixture run in, which indicates that club will go on to win the league. Arsenal need to do that an anfield on Sunday.

City won't drop any points between now and the Arsenal game at eithad. Arsenal can't afford to drop any points before then either.

Liverpool vs Arsenal: Jamie Carragher on Gunners' 'biggest game since Arsene Wenger's glory days'

Jamie Carragher says Arsenal's trip to Anfield on Sunday - live on Sky Sports - is the Gunners' biggest game since the glory days of Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal boast a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table ahead of the weekend, with a game in hand on second-placed Manchester City and nine games left to play, including a trip to the Etihad.

But Carragher believes if Mikel Arteta's side can become just the second side to win at Anfield in the Premier League this season it will give them the required momentum to claim their first league title for 19 years.

"I think it's the biggest game for them because if Arsenal were to win this game most people in this country will believe they'll go on to win the title and I think if they lose the game vice versa," Sky Sports pundit Carragher told the Essential Football Podcast.

"I believe City having that game in hand and that game to come at the Etihad against Arsenal, I think it could swing either way depending on this result for Arsenal.

"I can't think of a bigger game for Arsenal, certainly in the Premier League, since the glory days of Arsene Wenger when they were going for titles. It does feel that big because we know how tough Anfield is to go and get three points."

I fancy Arsenal to beat Liverpool, at the very least they'll get a point imo but with City breathing down their necks need to avoid a draw

Liverpool are poor and although it's at Anfield which would ordinarily be tough, I don't think the atmosphere will be as hostile or intimidating as they aren't rivals in terms of league position and nor is there any recent history of a rivalry, plus Liverpool are convinced top 4 is gone so don't even have much to play for

I think Arsenal will dominate the game and win 3-1

City keep winning and boosting their goal difference. Arsenal need to avoid defeat at Anfield and St James Park now, not only thar but they need to win at least 1 of those games.

Surely Arsenal fans would take a draw today against Liverpool?

And go 6 points clear at the top.

Liverpool are inconsistent not a poor team . You must have missed both matches against Newcastle this season, you lost both home & away to Liverpool. It’s an off season after playing every possible match last season , no other team has done in their history .

Beaten City & Utd at home too , all other top 4 teams

You don’t understand Liverpool or Anfield if you think Anfield won’t be rocking today & the players won’t give it their all.

The match could go either way , Arsenal take their chances a win is on but Liverpool could also score 2/3 and win ,

I’d go with a draw or lfc win , if arsenal win at Anfield , the league is over & they fully deserve the title .

Liverpool at Anfield.

Unbeatable in my view.

Arsenal need to do something extra special today

We will need perfect performance defensively and offensively to take anything from today's game

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale; White, Holding, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Partey; Saka, Odegaard, Xhaka, Martinelli; Jesus

As expected.

Looking at it with my head, we're playing against a team 29 points behind us. If you want to win the league you have to go to the big grounds and do the business. We should be winning.

But, the closer the game draws, the heart says I would take a draw.

I'll go with a 3-2 Arsenal win.

I understand enough, you are losing 1-0 and they are all over you

And that's 2-0 and more than fully deserved

Was obvious Arsenal would win this easily, they are a much better team than Liverpool

Media fans are obsessed with history. Just because Arsenal lost 5-1 6 years ago, Liverpool have to be favourites. No matter that they are 29 points behind. These performances will build back our reputation so everyone won't be underestimating us again next year.

Gabriel sleeping at the back post. My 3-2 prediction is still on.

Also it's interesting seeing Arsenal waste time, yet seemingly it's only something Newcastle do if you listen to other managers, fans and pundits

The game was over at 2-0 and then Xhaka stupidly fires up the crowd and the Liverpool players.

Liverpool looked a lot better in the last 10 minutes of the first half after Arsenal absolutely hammered them.

Two pathetic moments by VVG ;))

Bring on Nunez . . Arsenal are a good team but nothing special , nowhere near City & Lfc last 5 years .

Big 45 for Arsenal , If they lose this , they will lose the league & maybe not get this close for another decade ! Arsenal must continue to attack when possible , 3rd goal is a must to take 3 points imo

Just stay calm. It's purely mental to win this, don't panic, we are better.

Such a moronic thing to do

They were the better team by some distance and comfortably winning but he decided to wake the crowd up

Should not have taken off Odegaard and Jesus both

This could haunt us

That is absolutely idiotic subs from Arteta. Inviting pressure for 15 mins with an extra CB. Jorginho had to come on to help keep possession. Now we are inviting a barrage

Rob Holding is the Waseem JR of football

Bruv your a Center Back. ENGLISH CB!!

Why are you always so nice and lacking aggression???

Had to happen.

just too much pressure on Arsenal.

That’s it

City game has to be an Arsenal win or draw

Nothing less

Only fair to accept I stand corrected

Still feel Arsenal bottled that but Liverpool were much better in the second half and would have won if it wasn't for Ramsdale

2 points dropped. Xhaka, holding and Zinchenko all liabilities.

We will have to avoid defeat at eithad now.

Bottled a win today

Arsenal just got more and more defensive in the second half, got deeper and deeper and allowed Liverpool to dominate.

In the end Ramsdale spared Arsenal's blushes.

Amazing game for the neutral.

I would have taken a point before the game but it's so disappointing to let a 2-0 lead slip like that.

Everything was going so well until Xhaka lost his head and woke up the Anfield crowd.

I've always said it's a matter of time until Zinchenko gets exposed for his defensive inabilities. He's the left-sided version of TAA. To let Salah go past you with so much ease was just poor.

Arteta should've brought Tierney in sooner.

Xhaka and Zinchenko are Arteta's 2 x golden boys. Jorginho and Tierney should be playing ahead of these two.

One of the greatest draws you will ever see. Lot of credit to Liverpool for fighting their way back into the game.

All the focus will be on Ramsdale’s last minute heroics and rightly so, but the way Martinelli botched the simple pass to Saka to win the game in the last second is unforgivable.

This is why I refuse to rate him as a top talent. The technical ability and intelligence & awareness are not there.

He just doesn’t know when to release the ball in transition. Extremely frustrating to watch.

Trossard makes that pass and it is 3-2 to Arsenal 9 out of 10 times.

I think you're harsh on Martinelli but I do agree that Trossard would've got that right almost every single time.

Martinelli did mess up that pass.

Martinelli is such a class player btw. What a special talent

Pace / head down merchant. He should not be starting if you want to establish a super team that is hoping to dominate English and European football over the next few years and that should be the aim.

Saka as usual goes missing in the biggest games of his career

Is this based on the penalty miss against Italy in Euro 2020 final?

Honestly he's the best player for England and Arsenal, including big games. I'll give 3 x examples from this season:

Home to Man U
Home to Liverpool
Was England's best player vs France in the World Cup.

Martinelli has a lot of great qualities. His pace, work rate and finishing makes him a very difficult player to mark.

There is no right back in the league who wants to play him. However, you either have footballing intelligence and technical ability or you don’t. You can’t learn or unlearn these traits and he doesn’t have them.

He is a brilliant squad player, someone you can bring in the 65th minute and stretch an already tired defense. You can also start him every now and then as well but if you want him as a fixture in the playing XI, he will keep producing moments like these.

Not just the penelty Miss but that game in general he was totally bossed out of it by the Itialian defenders

Look at Martinelli and his involvement in the game, wanting to be the game changer and Saka was absolutely nowhere in comparison

You have to take the good with the bad and look at the overall output. There is a reason why TAA is still starting for Liverpool and Zinchenko is untouchable for Arsenal.

Tierney is a better defender but Zinchenko brings so much to the team and Arsenal will not be where they are without him.

I agree mate , a classic bottle job . 2-0 up you don’t drop points going for the league .

Were played off the park 2nd half, lucky to get a point in the end . Their keeper mom.

City have the league but good try gunners

Lets see how does in the Champions League next season especially against the better sides. If I'm proven wrong, you'll get your due credit.

The bigger concern I have however are our two weakest players, Xhaka and Zinchenko, particularly the latter who I think will become a liability in defence.

The only reason why these two players are in the Arsenal team is because they're Arteta's golden boys. Jorginho and Tierney are significantly superior.

That could be the point that wins Arsenal the title!

Yes 2 points dropped possibly, but in the end they could and should have lost.

Brilliant and pathetic in equal measure.

Lesson from last season, don't stir the hornets nest that is Anfield and what does Xhaka do?
Before that moment all you could hear where Arsenal away fans...

Going to five at the back after taking Jesus and Odeguard off at the wrong moment was also inexplicable.

Feels like a loss especially after being two nil up.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to Sky Sports: "Mixed emotions but over the next few days I think it will be a very good point.

"We've been under pressure for 35 minutes and get a point away at Anfield. They're a top side. It might be two points dropped but we could have dropped three.

"There's no better game to play in than these games. At least my saves have helped us out.

"I thought we were excellent. For 50-60 minutes we were very good but we got unlocked by two goals.

"Now we have to go back in and build again. One point is a lot better than none.

"The manager will say that [to focus on the good aspects]. He’s hugely positive. We’ll digest it in the next few days."

What’s there to lose now?

Let’s just go and win the league at the Etihad!

Salah is superior to any Arsenal player
In last 20 years lol

The crying 😢 starts but keep the tissues out West Ham may hurt too

Excellent in the first half. But we have to remember that he also flopped with what was an easy pass to Saka which he failed to pull off. Had Saka received it we'd won the game.

You have to remember he was 19 in the Euro 2020 final. He was good then but he's an even better player now.

That could be the point that wins Arsenal the title!

Yes 2 points dropped possibly, but in the end they could and should have lost.

I like your glass half full attitude.
Really we should have beaten this Liverpool team at Anfield.
They have an aging midfield and are extremely weak defensively. Trent, for all his lovely crossing ability, is a massive liability when it comes to defending and we just didn't take advantage of that.

In the end we lost our heads and our composure and even when beaming away we couldn't deliver that killer pass.

It's all ok if we learn from this

Zinchenko is several notches above Tierney who is just a generic LB. He adds nothing to the team.

Zinchenko creates so many chances moving forward and makes Arsenal an extremely tough team to defend against.

Tierney will never start ahead of him and rightly so. Xhaka I agree with - he has had a great season but need someone with more talent and skill in his position.

The game should have been over after 30 minutes - It could and should have been 3-0.

Then the second half would have been a non-event.

But as I wrote before, Xhaka woke the crowd up and fired up the Liverpool players. Stupidity from an experienced player.

Tierney is a better defender but Zinchenko brings so much to the team and Arsenal will not be where they are without him.

It's not defending. Tierney has more pace, he's better at dribbling with the ball and he can deliver much better crosses. When you look at defending and these other facets of the game mentioned here, Zinchenko isn't even half as good in those areas of his game.

I believe Zinchenko will get exposed in the Champions League next season and we'll rue the loss of Tierney when he moves away in the summer.

I think the only reason why Artera starts Zinchenko ahead of Tierney is because he's less injury prone and also because he's known him when they were both at City.

I don't think any other manager would pick Zinchenko over Tierney.

Saliba was a big miss today.

He would have organised the defence a lot better especially in the later stages of the first half and in the second half.

Some of Arsenal's leaders went missing today.

That could be the point that wins Arsenal the title!

Yes 2 points dropped possibly, but in the end they could and should have lost.

Think these 2 drop points will cost us in the end. Same players xhaka, holding, zinny being shown up liabilities that they are.

Fuming at throwing 2-0 lead away

For me the MOTM was Konate from Liverpool

One of the best defensive performances I’ve seen in years

What a game though

After a long, long time I’ve been emotionally invested in an Arsenal match. That fire had died within 5-6 years ago

Tierney is superb already but will learn from Zinchenko...
He can be a better more lethal version who switches positions and can pop anywhere on the midfield.

Martineli was also superb. Scored a goal and created the other one.
Liverpool's defence could not live with him.
No issues whatsoever with him, he'll only get better.

We just lost our composure at the wrong time and the wrong place.

I still think Arsenal win the league as I think City have some more dropped points in them, plus wouldn't rule out Arsenal getting a point at the Etihad

Anfield does that to the best of them.
Just ask City, Manu and Spurs

It’s set up nicely for the ultimate dream win isn’t it?

If you want to win the league, go and slay the dragon in its own den! I wouldn’t hold for a draw at Etihad, I will just go for the win and nothing less

Let’s hope so bro

We need him to come through for us now in these last few, crucial games

From my friend - LFC long time fanatic and one who was at Anfield this evening:

"Credit where credit is due. Gooners played a magnificent away game. This is a tough place for anyone (whether we are top or bottom of the league). Well done - Anyone who says Arsenal bottled it is talking out of their hats"
