Arsenal FC | 2022/23 Season

Seems to be a bit more competition for places this season in the squad.

Good signs.

Good signs.

Squad is still weak in numerous positions. 1 injury to jesus and partey and Arsenal will be where they were last season.

Injuries to Jesus, Partey and Saka are what worry me the most. We saw last season, teams were starting to target Saka physically so we have to be well prepared for the worst case scenario(s).

Injuries to all those 3 or loss of form and we do not have sufficient cover. Looks like Pepe is going on loan so we need another forward.

You take Partey out and are midfield is poor.

yes 100% teams were targetting Saka as hes our best player, add to that niether white/Tomi overlap when playing at RB means Saka has to do more work on righr hand side.

I'm not fully convinced by him yet, especially at LB. He seems to be very accomplished playing with the ball, as you'd expect from a Guardiola player, but defensively he seems very lacking. Still remember how a 30-year-old Jordan Ayew tormented him last week, and even a couple days ago was caught out of position for Leicester's 2nd goal.

Zinchenko will play a lot of games at LB as Tierney is made of glass, but in any big or crunch game, especially away from home, I'd much rather Tierney's defensive stability at LB, whereas Zinchenko is good for these types of attacking home games.

In an ideal world where Tierney is always fit, Zinchenko would compete for Xhaka's spot.

Trust me my friend, he looked supreme against Leicester at left back, looked even more solid then Tierney and that's saying something. I agree that his best position could be as and advanced holding midfielder.

Having seen him play the guy could finally be that missing piece of the puzzle.

#AFC are unchanged for the 3rd match running

Confidence!

Bournemouth 0-2 Arsenal

Martin Odegaard is the third Arsenal player to score twice in the first 11 minutes of a Premier League match, after Kanu in October 2002 v Sunderland and Eddie Nketiah v Leeds in May.

These are sort of games Arsenal need to be looking to win by 4 or 5 goals and show a ruthless streak.

Need to get jesus into game, attack has been flat since 25th minute. need to be more incisive in final 3rd.

What a goal by Saliba - strikers finish that from outside the box

3 points. Fulham next which will be a tough game as they have started season well, Arsenal need to be winning these sort of games at home.

Fulham and then villa at home next.

Arsenal swept aside Bournemouth to continue their perfect start and rise to the top of the Premier League table.

Captain Martin Odegaard put the Gunners in control inside the opening 10 minutes with a well-taken double.

After the break, William Saliba curled home a beautiful third before Gabriel Jesus saw his clever finish ruled out by VAR for offside.

It is the first time Arsenal have won their opening three fixtures since the 2004-05 season.

Bournemouth had won their first home game back in the Premier League against Aston Villa and there was a rousing feel to this Saturday teatime kick-off at the division's smallest ground.

It took a mere five minutes for that feeling to be punctured as Odegaard tapped in after Bournemouth keeper Mark Travers had saved Gabriel Martinelli's low strike.

The Norway midfielder struck again shortly after when he nabbed the ball off Jesus' toes to sweep a clinical left-footed finish past the helpless Cherries keeper.

Arsenal bided their time before sealing the win but did it in style when the impressive Saliba elegantly found the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Jesus was then denied a deserved goal by a tight VAR review that ruled him just offside from Odegaard's clever through ball.

It is very early days - and there are far harder tests to come - but the Gunners have laid down a marker with their superb start to the season.

Wins against Crystal Palace and Leicester meant Arteta had no qualms naming the same starting line-up for this one, the first time Arsenal have had an unchanged team for their opening three fixtures since the 2003-04 season - the last time they won the league.

It was clear from kick-off that confidence is high and Odegaard's early opener was reward for fine build-up, including a dynamic run from Jesus to create the chance for Martinelli.

Odegaard's quiet influence on this Arsenal side was made more obvious when he doubled the lead five minutes later.

Young France centre-back Saliba has won plenty of plaudits already this season and capped another fine performance with a delicious strike into the top corner from Granit Xhaka's cutback.

For the raucous travelling fans, the only thing missing from a perfect away day was a Jesus goal, the Brazil striker having one disallowed before being denied by a fine Travers save late on.

With an appealing run of fixtures ahead, the Gunners have a chance to make their presence felt at the top of the table.

For Bournemouth, Scott Parker responded to last Saturday's heavy defeat at Manchester City by naming a physical side, the selections of Ben Pearson, Jefferson Lerma and Kieffer Moore no doubt intended to unsettle Arsenal.

Instead, it left them sluggish to the Gunners' slick passing and unable to get out when penned in their own half. Changes at the break brought a brief improvement, only for Saliba's strike to squash them again.

The Cherries are in need of reinforcements, with defenders and forwards both surely on Scott Parker's wishlist after new signing Marcos Senesi was given a torrid time by Jesus on his full Bournemouth debut.

They will have more mobility upfront when Dominic Solanke is fully fit, but against this class of opposition, the squad looks short of Premier League quality.

With a daunting trip to Anfield up next, it may get worse before it gets better for Parker's side.

And what about Odegaard? I thought he goes missing in away games?

I said tough away games, this was against relegation fodder. I also said he looks good against teams like leeds, norwich etc.. when there is time on the ball.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard speaking to BBC Sport: "We came out really strong from the start and dominated the game completely. We scored some good goals and controlled the game, so it felt good.

"The second half was maybe a little bit different. We gave them some momentum and a lot of set-pieces but William [Saliba] scored our third one so it was a solid game."

Gabriel Jesus' work in the build-up to the first goal: "He gives us a lot. Not just goals and assists, but with the link-up play with how he drops down so we're lucky to have him."

Saliba's brilliant finish: "I've never seen him do that in training but it was a great strike. I'm really happy for him. He did really well in the last game too so I'm happy for him.

"We're doing well but we have to keep going, working hard. We're looking forward to the next game already. That's what it's all about."

Next two away games are united and Brentford, two games we lost last season. That will be the 1st indicator of whether we have improved away from home. 9 defeats away from home last season so we will see if we have grown a backbone.

Exhibition performance from Arsenal.

They are looking good.

Bournemouth are better than Norwich though.

:))) have a day off. Both teams are relegation fodder.

We lost 9 games away from home last season and our midfield got bullied in the everton, Newcastle, Brentford, Southampton, Spurs, C palace games. All games where teams were physical against us and didnt give us time on the ball, maybe you will understand Tough away. lets see if that improves this season. To lose almost half the away games we played was shameful.

Stop over hyping bournemouth like they are some champions league team. Man city smashed them last week, Arsenal did this week and liverpool will next week.

Against a team which is going straight down. We will see how good we are when play are next 2 away games at Old trafford and Brentford.

People who know nothing about football are still crying.

Called it 3 years ago - Arteta was born to be a world class manager - he will be one of the greatest of his generation.

Piece by piece, he is building a proper team and bringing the old Arsenal. Arteta will take Arsenal straight to the top.

All the talk of sacking him because he is clueless and inexperienced was a joke. Thankfully the people who run the club know better than the ignoramuses calling for his ouster.

They knew he is the right man to rebuild the club.

:)) wow 3 wins against teams we should be beating and now Arsenal has been rebuilt. Sounds like your celebrating league title after 3 games like spurs were last season.

Lets see if we can actually finish top 4 and also beat some of top sides before your comedy post about world class manager.

He bottled top 4 last season. Are 1st 8 fixtures these season have just 1 game vs top 6 side and your doing bhangra already. We took zero points of city or liverpool last year, we didnt even score a goal vs liverpool in 4 games last season.

Embarrassing post to say the least after just 3 games when we havent played a top dide yet.

Arsenal have made a great start to the new season scoring goals for fun. The new signings like Jesus have been splendid this far...dare i say he reminds me of Henry with his dribbling and skill. At the moment Arsenal seem to be the closest challengers to Man City. The real tests will come when they take on the big boys.

You know Piers Morgan? He was the most anti-Arteta fan I'd ever come across last season. Even he's now backing Arteta.

Go with your gut instinct rather than sitting on the fence and being overly pessimistic. Based on what you've seen so far, do you trust the process and back Arteta or not?

Because people are over hyping and calling manager world class? hes been in charge 2.5 years and not even made top 4 and some fans want to compare him to klopp.

Hes proven not much so far, his arrogance and naivety to not replace Auba or strengthen midfield cost us top 4. We still need a midfielder and winger otherwise same mistakes of last season will happen again.

Top 4 is a minimum this season.
Good cup runs are a minimum as well.

No excuses hes spent nearly 400M. We are 3 games into a season with favourable early fixtures as in most other seasons we have played liverpool/chelsea or city early on.

We took zero points of city / liverpool last season

we lost 13 games in league each of last 2 seasons. until thats at least halved then i dont see so called progress.

people need to stop lowering standards and applauding mediocrity.

My Gut instinct is out of 1st 8 fixtures 6 of them we should be winning and if we have improved we will see when we play united and brentford away.

Then in oct when we play spurs, liverpool anf city at Home and we are playing europa we will see how strong we are and how good squad is. until then im not getting over hyped.

Arteta:

"I'm proud because it's not easy to come here and win 3-0 but there is still things to improve"

"It's just three games, it doesn't mean anything. What it means is the team is playing really well, we won three games, we're scoring goals, we're keeping clean sheets, the team is playing and performing well, it's competing really well."

Ligue 1 club Nice are in talks to sign Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe on loan.

BBC Sport understands that the deal would not include an obligation to buy the 27-year-old who started just five times for the Gunners last season.

Pepe joined the north London side for a club record £72m in 2019 but has not been able to establish himself in the Premier League side.

The Ivorian, whose contract expires in 2024, has also yet to make an appearance this season.

Mikel Arteta has strengthened his squad during this transfer window, bringing in the attacking talent of Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira and young Brazilian Marquinhos.

There have also been reports linking Arsenal with a move for Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

Arsenal need a high quality goal scoring winger now that pepe has gone on loan, Also midfielder is still a must.

"He had some very good moments, some others where he hasn't really contributed that much to the team in terms of minutes"

Mikel Arteta says it 'was the best thing for everyone' that Pépé left Arsenal on loan

Some rumours are saying that Arsenal wont sign a new winger now and will just use marquinos as back up to saka. very naive and stupid if thats the case. we went from raphina to nothing. If arsenal make same mistake as january thats poor.

looks like partey might be out today.

Add to that no real quality replacements for jesus and saka, this squad needs more signings.

Lets see if same naive and stupid mistakes are fixed from last season.

Majority of fans getting impatient now with the lack of movement in the transfer market recently. I really worry for the fitness of Saka and Martinelli if no cover is brought in soon.

We have no replacement for Saka, we are in europs this season and he will be at the WC, poor squad management again.

Zinchenko out with a knee sprain, Partey out with a tight right thigh.

Squad already being tested. If squad isnt added to by Thurs thats on Edu and Arteta, same mistakes as last season.

Bournemouth 7-0 down to liverpool. Like i said last week Bournemouth are relegation fodder.

Possibly but don't forget we beat Bournemouth away from home though. Also I think they're better than Norwich.

Mikel Arteta makes two changes to the Arsenal side from the comfortable win over Bournemouth in their last Premier League outing.

Mohamed Elneny and Kieran Tierney come in for Oleksandr Zinchenko and Thomas Partey.

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tierney, White, Gabriel, Saka, Odegaard, Jesus, Martinelli, Saliba, Elneny, Xhaka.

Subs: Turner, Smith Rowe, Nketiah, Holding, Soares, Tomiyasu, Vieira, Lokonga, Marquinhos.

Doesnt make a difference both are relegation fodder, most sides will batter Bournemouth this season

Game so far showing why we need competition for places for saka on right wing. very wasteful 1st 35 mins.

Gabriel made up for a horrible error to score the winner against Fulham (2-1) and maintain leaders Arsenal's winning start to the Premier League season.

The defender lost possession on the edge of his own box to allow Aleksandar Mitrovic to put Fulham ahead.

But after Martin Odegaard equalised with a deflected strike, Gabriel redeemed himself with a scrambled finish from close range in the 85th minute.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale then made a crucial save to deny Nathaniel Chalobah with minutes remaining.

Victory ensures Arsenal stay top of the table with their fourth win in as many games - despite being frustrated for large parts by Fulham.

Mikel Arteta's side controlled possession and had numerous chances - Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus all coming close before Mitrovic stunned the Gunners with the opener.

Substitute Eddie Nketiah added much-needed energy for Arsenal when he was introduced shortly after Arteta's side fell behind and after the impressive Odegaard's equaliser, Gabriel thumped the ball after a scramble following a desperate corner.

The result ends Fulham's unbeaten start to their return to the top flight while Arsenal strengthen their credentials as a growing force under Arteta.

BBC

Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was brilliant. We knew it was going to be a tough game. We fought, showed great team spirit and it’s an amazing feeling.

"We played really well in the first half, we just missed the goal but that happens. He showed great character to come back and score the winning goal. It shows the character of the team. When someone makes a mistake, we lift them back up.

"We have to stay calm, take it game by game, work hard and win the next game. That’s the mindset."

On the club's supporters: "It’s a great chemistry with the fans. We made a mistake with the first goal but they kept supporting us. We’re grateful for all the support we get."

Firstly, you were right to say Fulham was going to be a tough game as that proved to be the case earlier today.

Secondly, it's about time to give Odegaard the respect that he deserves. He was head and shoulders above everyone else and richly deserved to be the man of the match. Not only is he delivering as a playmaker but he's developed his goal scoring ability. I appreciate his goal today was deflected but you he's also scored 2 goals in the previous game. You can clearly see he's worked on his shooting and all that practice is paying dividends. I can't believe you think Maddison is superior to him.

Finally, Nketiah was also very impressive when he came on. He deserves credit for Arsenal's comeback as he managed to unsettle Fulham with his pace and intelligent runs. The latter is something I've been banging on about for a while.

I know Gabriel made up for his mistake which led to the first goal but he does make poor defensive mistakes more frequently than you'd expect for a big 6 club.

I can see why he's in the first team as a CB because he's usually solid as a defender and is a proven goal scorer from set pieces.

However, I personally prefer we play Ben White and Saliba as our 2 x CBs + play specialist right back in Tomiyasu. This is because - firstly, Saliba is comfortably our best CB and he should be paired up with White as he's superior to Gabriel as a pure defender.

Thoughts?

Very point regarding Gabriel.
He is prone to making the odd mistake that often proves costly.
But there is something about him and I think competition will be bring the best out of him.

White and Saliba are right footed so could be a risk playing him in Gabriell's position.

So now I would stick with Gabriel. He redeemed himself today and as the team sets higher standards for itself hopefully players like Gabriel will deliver.

Bro I was playing cricket so I couldn’t watch

By the looks of it, Arsenal we’re about to have a similar game to last year but thank God they didn’t bottle a home win.

Gabriel has started of very well. I think there is nothing wrong with adding a couple of big name first team players to shore up the side and continue to rack up gaurenteed 3 points against non top 6 teams. It will be the reason why Arsenal comfortably secure a champions league spot

For the past few years, we have shelled many points in our first 5 games of the season. Not this time!

Yesterdays game only emphasised we need a replacement for Partey. Eleneny was poor yesterday, mitrovic kept finding space between midfield and are back 4 which elenenys job was to sweep up, add to that his passing is to slow and when chasing game is not good enough.

Saka looks tired and needs a rest, with no cover on that side he is going to get burnt out like wilshire and bellerin did in years gone by.

Gabriel was poor in 1st two games of season and was today, his lazyness and lapses of concentration will stop him from being a top player.

oddegaard was really good but because eleneny and xhaka cant run or pass quick enough he was force to play deeper which effects his game. But he dragged team through a hole in 2nd half.

Eddie coming on changed the game, his directness was the difference. In game like that we need a plan B and actually if we had mitrovic in our team that would be perfect back up striker.

lets hope we smash villa. United at OT next week is never easy.

Totally agree, something that I have also been thinking for a while. I'm a huge Ben White fan, and Saliba's performances speak for themself. Gabriel is simply not on the same level, his individual mistakes and rashness make him a liability at times (like the other day, or Wolves (H) and Man City (H) last season). It was acceptable last season as he was still better than Holding, however right now our 4 best defenders are White, Saliba, Tomiyasu and Tierney.

A potential issue with it unfortunately is in buildup. Most modern coaches, including Arteta, place great significance on having a left-footed LCB and right-footed RCB. It affords easier and more efficient routes and angles to pass out from the back and progress the ball quickly, which is quite crucial to our play. This would be the only thing keeping Gabriel's place right now.

A Martin Odegaard masterclass once again the other day. He's delightful to watch. The last 2 passages of play in this clip especially are just wonderful. He's only 23, he's going to be a force for many years to come for Arsenal.

You sure about that?

A couple of good seasons with no silverware and champions league, he will go to warm the bench at City or Barcelona

Hes already bench warmed at Real and didnt make it there.

That’s the thing with these types of players

Soon their agents will start demanding extortionate fees or they will sell them off to teams like Madrid, Barcelona and City who casually sign these players for their bench rather than their first team.

Nasri
Fabregas
Ramsey (Juventus)

Looks like Odegaard will do the same at some point.

Hes not reached the level off any of the 3 players mentioned, he may do one day. But not even close, still has to prove he wont dissapear in tough physical games away from home.

Martin has been in tremendous from so far this season, Arsenal's best in those matches I have watched.

I am a Leeds fan first and foremost, but because of Erling and Martin I have started watching City and Arsenal as well.

Just waiting for Leo Hjelde at Leeds to take the step up for a permanent place in starting eleven, and then we will have 3 superstars in our national team.

Partey injured again no shock there, also now Eleneny. Only needs a stupid xhaka red card and we will be even worse situation. once again Arteta / Edu naivety at fixing midfield will slap them in face again like it did in january.

Arsenal are looking at the possibility of signing Cody Gakpo from PSV with Southampton, Newcastle, and Leeds all in the race to sign him

Saka looks burnt out so, Gapko would be a good winger to help out on right hand side.

A midfielder is a must as well.

Only one injury away from meltdown. Crazy manager in charge letting good players leave and not replacing them

He’s actually got 4/4 wins for a start in the season, unlike Wenger/Emery and Arteta when starting the season off

Arsenal have a golden opportunity to stay ahead of their competition for once without having to consistently catch up unlike the previous seasons

Hopefully Arsenal don’t mess this up

Tielemans and Gapko look like the 2 x most feasible acquisitions we can make for each position. That would round off a near perfect window for us.

I say near perfect because I really wish we signed Bissouma.

I could be wrong but it seems at this stage Fabio Vieira was a pointless signing. We already have 3 x other players (Odegaard, Zinchenko and ESR) who can play in the same position. We should have prioritised either a right winger or a DM like Bissouma over him.

The partey issue should have been fixed early on in the summer.

Since Partey joined hes played 60% of games, simply not acceptable and his performances have been nowhere near that of what he was like at Ath Madrid.

Rest of our midfield is xhaka who plays well but always gets sent off and suspended every season.

our 3rd choice is Eleneny a so called 'squad player" lets get real the amount of games partey and xhaka miss every season hes more of a regular then bit part player. Yes he can do an honest job, but fact hes been at club 6 years now and is 3rd choice shows how poor our midfield is.

Then lokonga, actually feel sorry for lad, gets utlilized in wrong way, most formations he was put in he was isolated and exposed and killed his confidence snd manager clearly doesnt rate him as hes now behind Eleneny.

Same 4 CM we had last season with no europe (Afcons in Jan) and we couldnt cope.

This season - in europe (also a world up in nov) so more games and we keep same 4 players.

All im hearing is this is best squad we have had in years. lets get real
our midfield 4 options are average at best.

would any fan pick any of these 4 in the following?

To basically go through 95% of TW and neglect an area which needed fixing is a joke?

The midfield wasnt great last season yet same naivety has been used again.

You do realize wenger and Arteta usually had harder fixtures at start of season.

Emerys 1st season he had city and chelsea 1st two games.

Arsenal play 1 top 6 side here in 1st 8 games. i wish fans would actually look at fixtures 1st before raving on about the current start.

We shouldnt have needed a new LB or a nrw CM. But we bought crap players in tavares and lokonga so had to fix those errors. Every summer, Arsenal fixes its previous windows mistakes before addressing actual real problems. This was happens when you have novices in charge.

The bissouma non signing was as dumb ad it gets.

Yeah the vieira signing makes zero sense when CM, another striker / winger were needed.

We have let Auba / laca / Pepe / balagun (loan) go and really just brougt jesus in.

Marquinhos maybe to good for u23 but hes not ready from PL, just like balagun who was same to good for u23s but needed a loan.

Emerys 1st season he had city and chelsea 1st two games.

Arsenal play 1 top 6 side here in 1st 8 games. i wish fans would actually look at fixtures 1st before raving on about the current start.

You can give Arsenal 3 teams that were promoted last year and 5 teams from the bottom from the previous season, and you can bet your house that they will drop points at home let alone away against them. We have always been extremely poor starters regardless of who we are served up. Arsenal were about to drop points against Fulham at home, we have not yet learned the art of dominating against teams that should be put to bed 3 points home and away.

Another great opportunity for Arsenal to pick up 3 points at home and extend their lead from Chelsea and United to 6 points.

COYG!!

Same PR rubbish from the club now that only exceptional quality signings will ve made, same rubbish Arsene wenger came out with when board refused to give money.

Weve gone from looking at Raphina and neto to supposidly struggling to spend now

Zero ambition as usual when extra push is needed.
