Crystal Palace mocked Mikel Arteta’s tactics at half-time of their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal by playing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ during a youth penalty shootout.
Upon release of Arsenal’s All or Nothing documentary on Amazon, a clip of Arteta’s preparation for a top-flight match against Liverpool went viral.
The Spaniard played Reds anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ to his players during training, in an attempt to prepare them for the Anfield atmosphere.
Many were quick to ridicule Arteta, given the Gunners lost the game 4-0, while others thought it was a good example of innovative coaching.
The Eagles stadium announcer certainly saw the funny side as Palace lost to Arsenal in the opening match of the 2022/23 campaign.
Arteta’s side raced into a one-goal lead before the break and doubled their lead with five minutes remaining.
But the Palace DJ attempted to get one over on the Gunners during an innocent half-time activity.
“At half-time, kids from both clubs were taking penalties away to our left,” talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface said on commentary.
“When the Arsenal kid stepped up to take a penalty, the PA announcer stopped and said, ‘Hold on – let’s play something to help you deal with the pressure.
“At that point, the PA played ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. A little bit of a nod to the Arteta tactics during the All Or Nothing documentary.”
Earlier this week, Arsenal legend Ray Parlour was unable to defend Arteta for the tactic.
“That’s hilarious isn’t it, really,” Parlour told talkSPORT Breakfast.
“I’m amazed he did that, if I’m being honest. If that was me on the training pitch, I would have started laughing. We would have been mucking about.
“You go with it, that’s what the program is all about, it goes behind the scenes and it’s great for the fans, but that was bizarre.
“And it didn’t work did it – they lost 4-0!
“If Arsene Wenger did that in our training sessions, I don’t know what the reaction would be. Everybody would be laughing.”
