SL is a small nation , and like NZ must be given credit that they compete well despite having a small pool of players.

Population Sri Lanka 20 Million
Population Australia 22 Million

Population New Zealand 4.5 Million
Population of West Indian countries is roughly 6 million

Don't think comparing a developed country and developing country on population is logical, in a developing country not even half the population might have access to cricket

Australia , a little more than 22 million , around 25 million. No doubt Australia must t be given the credit , they do well in so many sports , not just cricket.

Last years census said just over 22 million.

But yes we do have an advantage of superior coaching and facilities and nutrient etc.

I think the main thing it demonstrates is how amazing the West Indies were.

Still a bit raw I think. Would be happier if he played a bit more shield and maybe even some cricket in England.

Of course that wont happen, will play a million LOI instead.

Starc needs to do more than clean the tail, was missing when the hard work was done today by Siddle and Watson.

siddle is such a hard working cricketer!!this guy along with steyn, anderson and morkel has to be amongst the best bowlers in the game today!

That's it :(
Showed a lot of fight very proud of the guys. So close yet so far. Just over 10 overs to go. Congrats Aus.

It's one thing to clean up the tail and bowl bunnies, another to crack open a resilient top order.

Bro

these are not '70s & '80s or even '90s when tailenders cannot dig in yorkers or lacked any technique to defend & play careless shot.

Tail enders today play with proper technique. Starc worked his butt off 92+MPH inswinging yorkers & were dug out by tailenders except the last one that somehow rolled onto the stumps.

Appreciate that.

I have seen '80s & '90s cricket & I have seen tail enders play offensive shots to get boundary to inswiging yorkers of Marshall, Waqar, Wasim, Ambrose etc etc & loose their stumps everywhere

Today, you got Ashwin scoring 100 runs, Starc himself score 75 runs.

It was not like this back in the days.

From crapinfo

Peter Siddle is the Man of the Match. Top Test cricket on the final day in Hobart, as Sri Lanka resisted brilliantly, making Australia work for every wicket. The ball didn't seem to do much in the morning session, but by the evening it was moving both ways and the bounce was increasingly unpredictable. Siddle did the grunt work early on, and got the wickets of Sri Lanka's experienced middle-order batsmen before Starc polished off the tail with a hostile spell towards the end of the game.
Brydon Coverdale's match report is updated here and we'll have plenty of analysis later in the day from Dan Brettig and Andrew Fernando.
John Hasting tweets: "Great work Aussie boys. Awesome effort. @CricketAus p siddy outstanding. #mom"
And Russel Arnold says: "Well done Australia.... Had to work really hard for it but stuck to their task... Brave effort SL"
And this just in, Peter Siddle cleared of ball-tampering charges. Match referee Chris Broad says:
"In the opinion of the umpires, there was no evidence to suggest that the condition of the ball was changed, or that the video or photographic evidence would support a charge under the Code of Conduct, so they will not be laying any charges relating to these incidents."

Impressed by the character shown by both teams.

Siddle has gone from a guy with heart to a genuinely good bowler to a gun. Top player.

Congratulations to both sides for a great effort.

Well done Aussies on a hard fought victory. This was the venue where SL were expected to be competative at and they put up a brave fight. The Aussie lineup with out clarke for next game will look very weird but lets see if SL can expose any weaknesses in Aussie batting in next game.

Just wanted to say that the commentary was unbearable today bordering on ridiculous.

Did Ian Healy jizz his pants? :D

It was a three pronged attack Healy, Taylor and Slater. Came up with ridiculous stuff, when 2 decisions were over turned Taylor started ranting how DRS is favouring batsmen and the decision shouldn't have been overturned

Do what most Australians do.
Turn down the volume of the 9 footage and listen to the ABC commentary.

ABC always has guest commentators from the other nation as well. Not to mention that the commentatators actually watch first class cricket.

Channel 9 is just a jobs for the boys.

Isn't there some way the viewing public can vote out certain commies?

Also have they called Russell Arnold to team up with the dynamic duo of Heals and Taylor?

No, otherwise we would have very different commentators. Channel 9 have had the cricket forever, with the same commies, and they dont care what the fans want. In Australia, you watch what Channel 9 give you.

As Convict says, most Aussies watch with the sound down and listen to the radio if they want commentary.

Other point I should make is that Channel 9 is broadcasting to a domestic audience. The broadcasters sending the footage overseas are too cheap to hire their own commies so they just use the Channel 9 feed, which is biased and jingoistic to say the least.

Fail to understand why subcontinent teams fail to take advantage of the weakest Australian team they will ever play against. This Aussie team is well and truly beatable atleast on paper.

one step at a time man. Cleaning up tailenders is no easy feast now a days. There are no murlis, walshs, nowadays.

The thing with Starc is he is very much a rhythmic bowler. If he gets into his groove he can upset any batsman, if he doesn't he can go for plenty. He is like MJ in that sense(MJ of 3-4 years ago) except he can bring the bowl back in. He is a work in process IMO and will only get better.
He has two very good characteristics which will help him to become a good bowler.
a)he can effortlessly clock 143K.
b) He can bowl very good in-swinging yorkers. Rare quality in bowlers nowadays and we all know yorkers are the best way to get tailenders out.
He spreads around, yes but he will only get better with experience.

You have a good bowler at your disposal.

Congratz to Aussies and Commiserations to Lankans. A good test match and both teams have some positives to look forward to. Herath the destroyer should be a handful on SCG wicket.
