With the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2020 on the horizon, Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, Rahul Chahar and Deepak Chahar will all look to make a lasting impression if India give them a chance against Bangladesh, starting with the first T20I in New Delhi on Sunday, 3 November.

Overview

India v Bangladesh, 1st T20I
Feroz Shah Kotla, New Delhi
Sunday, 3 November; 7:00pm local, 1:30pm GMT

The biggest challenge for Bangladesh will be to cope without Shakib Al Hasan, one of the leading all-rounders of the game, who has been suspended after accepting charges of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.

The visitors fared reasonably well in their last assignment, winning three of their four completed matches in the home tri-series against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. Shakib was the captain during that series, and it is Mahmudullah, who has now been given the responsibility.

Bangladesh will hope their seniors can find form. All of Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Mustafizur Rahman will need to lead the way in a tricky series against the mighty Indians.

India, captained by Rohit Sharma in absence of the rested Virat Kohli, are set to field a young side as they look to blood fresh talent for the premier T20 event next year in Australia.

It will be particularly interesting to watch Shivam Dube, if he is given the chance. The Mumbai all-rounder has been earmarked for success in the shortest format, and will be desperate to live up to the billing.

Remember the last time

India and Bangladesh last met in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019. India won by 28 runs after posting 314/9, powered by Rohit's 92-ball 104. In T20Is, the sides last met in the Nidahas Tri-Series final in Colombo in 2018, when a late blitz from Dinesh Karthik earned a heist for India off the last ball. Bangladesh have come close to beating India a few times, but have lost each of the eight fixtures against them.

What they said

Rohit Sharma, India captain: "One or 100 matches, it is an honour. When we were growing up, it was all about playing for the country. I have captained the team and the experience has been good, and I don't think about for how long I should be made captain."

Mahmudullah, Bangladesh captain: "This [Shakib's absence] will work as motivation for us. I think there's no greater honour than playing for the country. The responsibility to lead the side lies with me, so I will try to give it my all."

Conditions

The smog in Delhi might make visibility a factor, and even pose other difficulties. The temperature is expected to hover around 30 degrees, and dew could be a factor.

On the eve of India’s home series-opener against Bangladesh, stand-in captain Rohit Sharma expected nothing short of a fiercely-contested series.

Rohit is captaining India in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli, who has been rested for the three-match series. But while Kohli’s absence impacts India, it is not to the same extent that the hosts are bound to be hit by the absence of their two best players, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.

Regardless, Rohit wouldn’t write off Bangladesh, given the strides they have made as a limited-overs outfit. They have pushed India to the limit on several occasions, most memorably during the ICC World T20 2016 game in Bengaluru, and in the finals of the Nidahas Trophy and the Asia Cup last year.

"Bangladesh is a very very good team," Rohit said. "Over the years, we have seen how they have performed, not just at home, but also away. Especially against us, they have always put us under pressure. There is no way we look at this team differently.

"I understand there are two key players missing, but they still have quality players that can upset any team. I wouldn't say 'upset'. I would say 'beat'. That's a good word to use. They are very mature cricketers now."

As for India, their squad for the series is replete with youngsters, such as Khaleel Ahmed, the Chahar brothers – Deepak and Rahul, Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson and Washington Sundar. Some of these players come with vast IPL experience, and success, but international cricket is a different beast, and Rohit called on them to maximise every opportunity they get with the national side. "That is the challenge of international cricket," he said. "You will not get exactly what you want. You will have to work your way, you will have to earn that position.

"Plus, at the same time, you have to make sure that whatever little opportunities you get, you make the most of it. At their IPL franchises, they are more or less guaranteed to play at least 10 games, so they know how to bat and what to do. When it comes to international cricket, there are limited opportunities. All of us have gone through that. It's not just these guys, and I am sure they are working towards that. They are very keen and hungry to do well in those limited opportunities."

As for his own goals as captain, Rohit said that his primary responsibility is to embolden his players to express themselves the way they like. "In T20, you need a lot of strategy, planning, understanding the players, what you have in your squad and what they can offer,” he said. “That is the most important thing for a captain to understand. That is something I have probably executed at Mumbai Indians, with the help of the support staff we have.

"I understand there are two key players missing, but they [Bangladesh] still have quality players that can upset any team. I wouldn't say 'upset'. I would say 'beat'. That's a good word to use. They are very mature cricketers now."
Rohit Sharma

"The way I look at it is when you captain your side, you are not such an important person. The other 10 players are the most important players because you want to get the best out of those 10 players. Of course, your performance will matter, but I don't like to consider myself at the forefront. The other 10 guys become the forefront of the team, and I have to focus on them and give them that confidence and freedom where they can come out and express themselves.

"At the same time, you need that support from the players as well, which I have got very well at Mumbai Indians, and even when I have captained India for whatever little time I have. I expect the same in this tournament as well."

Have to sleep for few hours now ...............

8 matches, 8 losses. That's what Bangladesh will be up against when they turn up on Sunday to face India for the 9th time in T20Is, having failed to taste success in any of the teams' previous encounters. It's the 2nd most lopsided rivalry in the shortest format after Pakistan's 11-0 win-loss record vs Zimbabwe. To top that, Bangladesh lost their talismanic captain and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan to an ICC-imposed year-ban for corruption, just a week before the start of the T20I series. Earlier, veteran opener Tamim Iqbal too opted out of the tour due to personal reasons. The visitors' problems don't end here though. The hazardous levels of air pollution currently canvassing Delhi have forced some of their players to train wearing masks. Bangladesh, however, will bank on the short duration of a T20I game to not allow for a long time exposure.

For hosts India, the 3-match series is another opportunity to continue with their selection experiments keeping an eye on the 2020 T20 World Cup. After their 1-1 draw in the T20I series vs South Africa, India have now slipped to the 5th place in the ICC T20I rankings - a fact that was also mentioned by stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma on Saturday. India are currently in the process of trying out different players in T20Is while also accpeting their shortcomings of not being able to put enough runs on the board while batting first. This has meant that youngsters like Rahul Chahar, Washington Sundar, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube have been included in the squad since the end of World Cup 2019.

This approach has inevitably meant that India have risked victory in pursuit of long-term positives. And now with regular captain Virat Kohli rested, Rohit Sharma will be leading a side with himself and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan, the only senior players in the team.

Dube to debut?

Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dube is all set to make his India debut, as hinted by Rohit Sharma on Saturday. With Rohit also confirming that the team will continue to back Rishabh Pant for the wicketkeeper's spot, Samson might have to wait a bit longer for his 2nd game in the India jersey. Still, it could be a toss-up between KL Rahul and Manish Pandey for the No. 3 spot.

In the bowling department, India have brought back Yuzvendra Chahal in the squad and the tweaker is expected to lead the spin-attack in Delhi. Washington Sundar might accompany him as the 2nd spinner, given his utility bowling in the powerplay. In Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Khaleel Ahmed, India have a troika of T20 specialists who would be eager to cement their places in the side.

In what will also be the 1000th T20I game ever played, both the teams will like to mark the occasion with a victory. While India will hope for their faith in a young side to be repaid in full, for Bangladesh, a win will come as welcome news for the hordes of fans after a turmoil-filled last few weeks.

India squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant(wk), Washington Sundar, Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, Deepak Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed, Shivam Dube, Shardul Thakur

Bangladesh squad: Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Naim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Animul Islam, Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, Arafat Sunny, Al-Amin Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Shaiful Islam, Abu Haider Rony, Mohammad Mithun, Taijul Islam

BCCI has done some really stupid things but firstly arranging this match in Delhi in winter and still going through with it even after the serious health warnings is really up there.

Why can't they simply abandon the match and bear the losses.

Nothing new for BCCI. It's scheduling of home games defies logic.

Allotting games to coastal cities during Monsoon, not starting test matches earlier in North eastern cities like Kolkata and Ranchi etc.

Hope Saurav take care of it.

Hosting a game in Delhi straight after Diwali is not the brightest idea. Hopefully they will learn their lesson.

Wow, this bowling lineup will bleed profusely and the dew will be relentless. Return of the trundler army.

Would be exciting to see Naim, Afif and Aminul from BD and Chahar, Khaleel and Dube for India.

Almost life time achievement for Shafiul......

Shafiul might have saved Aminul here a little may be - heard kid is a leg spinner!!!!

Yes he is but more like a batting all rounder if I am not wrong. However if he can show some potential with his leg spin, BD would like him to become more of a bowling all rounder.

It would be amusing if bangladesh whitewashes india in their own backyard,It might ease the pain of the 3 nil whitewash we suffered at the hands of the lankans...:smith

From now on, they’ll try to accommodate one leggi in every FC game in order to find one for National team. Rishad & Jubair are other two.

Excellent and much needed step.

And Aminul with the wicket in his very first over. What a start for the kid.

India not selecting Iyar for WC for that no 4 position was so surprising to me. Guy has been in some touch this year and deserved to in WC nevertheless he is getting his chances now.

Is it me or has Soumya put on weight?

Yes on a second look you are right, he looks pumped in his arms, shoulders and chest maybes he started putting on some muscle or he has gained weight overall cant exactly tell.

Loving the flight Aminul is giving. Being brave is an important part of being a successful LOI spinner. Wicket is stopping a bit as well but still credit to him using that to his full advantage.

Dhawan struggling big time to time the ball, hope he compensates during last overs.

IND 96/4 (15.2 Ovs) CRR: 6.26
Bangladesh opt to bowl

IND 102/5 (16.0) CRR: 6.38

Bangladesh making India sweat at the moment.

Pant's pathetic innings comes to an end. What are these hacks like Pants, Dubes doing in this indian team?I would happily have the smart cricketer like W.Sundar who is also a wonderful bowler like Ashwin. As I type this, Sundar hits a 6.

sundar can smash man. big hitter. I think indian selectors are biased against South Indians.
dube just started. Give him some time. pant I agree is not suited for t20 or odi.

Sundar is a proper bat! It's such a luxury to have players like him in LOIs. I haven't seen a single fluent innings from Pant in LOIs thus far. Imagine if Dhoni played at 100 SR today and gone out in 19th over, this forum would have gone berserk.

There you go, I said it, Washington Sundar is a better hitter than overrated Pant.

agreed. sundar is similar to jadeja. shreyas too is a good player.

Actually Dhoni has been doing that for years.

This. I have got nothing but praise for Pant for his test exploits so early in his career but its is time to drop him from LOIs, those fugly hoicks are real pain to watch that too coming from an Indian batsman.

Wow what an innings from the next big thing today. Kudos to Pant. Well done boy. Without you today we wouldn't have reached a score of 148. He is the real deal indeed. :inti

Agree. Held the innings together. Ended up being the difference between a 120 or 148 today.

Lol. It was Dubey’s first game. Wth :))

Actually Dhoni has been doing that for years.

Still he averages 37 with a strike rate of 126.
Pant averages 20 with a strike rate of 120. Also Dhoni averages 51 at number 4 position in T20's. Pant is lucky that he is playing mostly at 3, 4 and 5. :inti

Which genius decided to host a match in Delhi at this time of the year? ***** should be fired with immediate effect.

Why don't they kick KL Rahul out of this team? He has got enough chances. Now its time for someone else to get a chance. :inti

Curious to see how Khaleel would bowl today. With him in playing XI, Bangla boys will reach the target in 16-17 overs easily.

Agree. Held the innings together. Ended up being the difference between a 120 or 148 today.

You kidding right? We don’t need someone batting at 5 to hold the innings together. Thats the job for openers or 1 down.

Pant becomes a difference between a 165 or 148 these days.

Lamest reply I have seen here in a while, shouldn't fresh and young Pant be a massive upgrade over 'Old's and 'Over the hill ' Dhoni?
Eventually, he must do well. But can’t expect immediate results from any player be it Pant or Sundar or Krunal. I’m sure this logic too will go over your head.

Smog situation has been in control today in fact. Im in Gurgaon and surprisingly things are better today thanks to some rain yesterday night and early morning today.

Probably getting his last few chances. Don’t see him return to either ODI or test side. He’s done well in t20s sporadically but he will eventually lose his place here too. Totally his fault.

Lol. 165. Does it come to your mind that we were struggling badly half way through?

Those last 7 balls have cost this game - this is becoming common these days that IND is winning games against us for their last few overs either with bat or ball.

Didn't watch the whole game. Just logged in.

Bangladesh restricted India to 148. That's not a bad effort. They can chase it down with sensible batting.

As said earlier ball is stopping a bit. Mashfiq and Mahmudullah with their experience and ability to play with straight bat will be important.

Required run rate is 7.58.

BD should ensure they don't fall behind.

I think, they should wait a bit for dew of FSK to pour down and Kookaburra to fade a bit - 75 in last 9 is possible with 8 wickets at hand.

Not enough on the board I feel..How is the pitch behaving? BD looks favourites.

India playing too many all-rounders it seems.

Too slow from BD.

19/1 after 3.2 overs.

RRR is skyrocketing. Need to accelerate.

It's better compared to maybe the day after Diwali however it's still very bad. Not suitable for playing outside, it's still a major health risk.
