Bangladesh has called back Mahmudullah, Rubel Hossain and Subashis Roy Chowdhury for the two-match Test series in South Africa.

Bangladesh has recalled Mahmudullah in the 15-man squad for the two-match Test series against South Africa, which gets underway on September 28.

Subhasis Roy and Rubel Hossain were also included in a bid to boost the side's pace attack.

Shakib Al Hasan, the world's leading allrounder who sought a six-month break from the game's longest format, has been excluded from the group that will play two Tests in Potchefstroom, and Bloemfontein, from October 6. There was also no place for Nasir Hossain, who struggled in his comeback series against Australia.

Minhajul Abedin, the chief selector, said it was really tough to replace someone of Shakib's calibre. "I respect his decision but of course it is very hard to replace him," he said on Monday. "We have to take into account his mental state because as a player I understand what he may be going through physically and mentally."

Mahmudullah, who was dropped from Bangladesh's historic 100th Test, in Sri Lanka, was back in contention due to his decent record in seaming conditions. His one century in the format came against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2010. "In South Africa, the ball comes out onto the bat and Riyad plays well in those conditions," offered Abedin.

Despite not being up to the mark against Australia in the Test series which ended in a 1-1 draw, Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes managed to keep their spot. While Kayes could only score 21 runs in four innings against Australia, Sarkar mustered 65.

“South Africa is a very challenging place to play, that is why we thought we need experience and so we picked Imrul," explained Abedin. "Plus, the wickets in South Africa are bouncy and Imrul plays well square of the wicket. So we thought we will see him for one more series."

The Test series will be followed by three One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals.

Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt, wk) Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Sabbir Rahman, Mahmudullah, Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Subashis Roy, Mominul Haque.

Mustafizur, Taskin and Rubel make a pretty potent pace attack. South Africa should be wary.

Rubel should not be there. Terrible Test bowler. All over the place. But I wouldn't be surprised if the team management get tricked by his pace and pick him again.

Subashis is a decent new-ball bowler. He has good control. Ideally it should have been Mohammad Shahid opening the bowling for Bangladesh but he has been injured for a long time.

Shafiul is a better test bowler than Rubel.Mustafiz, Shafiul and Taskin/Shuvashis should be trio in my opinion.

The obsession with some players like Sarkar, Kayes, at test is beyond madness. These lot have been failing way too much and don't have the technique to survive on bouncy, seaming SA wickets. and Sarkar has had enough chances to make an impact at test he has not got the temperament to last long, better to stick at ODI.

Liton KD, should have given chance opening instead, or bat at 3, with Tamim-Kayes partnership resuming. Sarkar, Sabbir should only one play and that too down the order, 6-7 at test.

Glad my homie, Subhasish is back. Don't know why, Kamrul was not included instead of one of Shafiul or Rubel. Rubel has a bradmanesque bowling states in test cricket, still they are too stubborn not exclude Rubel from Test format.

Where is shahid??!! He is the best test pacer of bd. Why is he ignored?

Bangladesh captain eyes 'landmark' SA series

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said on Saturday his team were looking for a "landmark" series against South Africa when they play two test matches there later this month.

A 15-man Bangladesh squad left Dhaka on Saturday for the series, which will start with the first test at Potchefstroom on September 28.

"Some people may think we don't have any chance against South Africa. But I don't agree with them," Mushfiqur told reporters prior to their departure.

"We don't have a very good record in South Africa. And very few of our players played in South Africa. It is a kind of place where everybody struggles. Maybe we also have to struggle," he said.

"Personally I think if you don't believe in yourself, you won't get any success. Firstly, we have to believe that it is possible for us to beat South Africa. We did not have this belief even three years ago," he added.

Bangladesh lost all four tests in South Africa by an innings margin during their previous two visits in 2002 and 2008, but Mushfiqur said they were now in much better shape.

"So we have now got the confidence. Hopefully this series will be a kind of landmark for us. And we are ready to take that challenge.

"If we can play well the two tests overseas that will be a kind of message," he said.

The team, he said, had improved since their two test matches in New Zealand in January.

"Our record in New Zealand was also not good, but we played better cricket this time. We lost both tests but played much better cricket than the past."

In the weeks after their loss to New Zealand, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka and Australia in two test matches away and at home respectively.

"We are in much better shape, an improved team than our last (South Africa) tour," he said, adding if they did well in South Africa, "it will be a kind of message" to other top test sides.

Mushfiqur, however, said the absence of star allrounder Shakib Al Hasan is a setback for the side.

Shakib will sit out two test matches after asking for a six-month break from tests.

"You need to play two players in his place, to be honest –- one batsman, one bowler... for me as a captain his absence is a kind of setback," he said.

The second test will be held at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein on October 6-10.

Bangladesh will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s in their month-long tour to the African nation.

If we can win 1 ODI and 1 t20i and fight in test then that will be huge for bd ,an Asian country who tour very little in sa

So Shakib has decided to volunteer himself as a HTB only now? Ducking out whenever a tough tour approaches?

No. Misjudgment.

what do you mean:?

anyways what results would be Bangla fans be happy with?

I think taking both tests into 5th day will be an acievement

and winning a game each in ODIs and T20s is possible.

SA i believe is very overrated at this point and surviving on reputation rather than performance

Bangladesh can compete

Taking a Test to Day 5, or losing in 3 days are a bit misleading statement - there are many Tests that are finished in 3 days with real close margin (like the 1st Test against AUS), while one can take the Test to Day 5, not necessarily competing in it (like the 1st Test between SRL-IND recently).

I think, at this point, we'll have to look beyond taking it to Day 5; rather compete it by session. I don't mind losing in 9 sessions, if at least we compete 6 of those; while no point losing by 343 runs on 15th session, after failing to avoid follow on. Best expectation should be 1-0 loss, with the 2nd Test an Bloemfontein drawn without the assistance of rain Gods.

T20 is near impossible to win, but yes, since the ODIs are after Test & team will be in SAF for 3+ weeks by then, we should compete far better. Shakib & Mossaddek should join the party by then as well.

We would be happy if we could avoid innings defeat and give fight in both tests and 1 win each in both ODI and t20 series.

Cape Town - The Proteas have received another setback ahead of their Test series against Bangladesh with the news that all-rounder Chris Morris has been ruled out of both matches.

Proteas team manager Mohammed Moosajee confirmed the news at new coach Ottis Gibson's unveiling in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Morris is struggling with a back strain and he could only be available for the T20 and ODI series against the Tigers from October 15.

With Vernon Philander also out of the first Test and with Dale Steyn not ready, the Proteas will have to examine their depth against Bangladesh.

Other allrounder options are Wayne Parnell and the uncapped duo of Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius.

The first Test against Bangladesh gets underway on September 28 in Potchefstroom while the second Test starts on October 6 in Bloemfontein.

The 30-year-old Morris has played just four Tests for the Proteas so far.

looks like SA struggling badly. If Shakib was playing, Bangladesh would have a really good chance as they competed in NZ earlier this year even when Boult and Southee were playing. Without Shakib though my prediction is still a SA series win even without some of their key bowlers due to injury

Dhaka: Pace bowler Rubel Hossain was prevented from boarding a flight to South Africa with the Bangladesh tour squad after the airline claimed he did not have immigration clearance, officials said Tuesday.

"There is a new a provision that the passenger needs to have some sort of 'OK to Board' clearance from his ultimate destination," Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury told AFP after Rubel, 27, was refused a boarding pass at Dhaka airport on Saturday.

"We are in touch with Cricket South Africa and hopefully the matter will be resolved soon. He will fly to South Africa on the first available flight once the matter is resolved," he said.

The rest of the 14-member Bangladesh squad has already arrived in South Africa ahead of the first Test starting at Potchefstroom on 28 September.

The second and final Test will be played in Bloemfontein staring on 6 October.

Rubel is now likely to miss the team's three-day warm-up match at Benoni near Johannesburg which begins on Thursday.

Chowdhury claimed Rubel's immigration clearance had nothing to do with a previous criminal allegation against the fast bowler.

In 2014, Rubel's former girlfriend and former actress Naznin Akter Happy had made a rape allegation against him, prompting police to detain him for several days.

A Dhaka court in May 2015 rejected the rape case against Rubel after police said there was no evidence against the bowler.

"I don't think it is the reason for him not to get the immigration clearance," said Chowdhury.

"His name is very common. Maybe someone else with the same name has some problem which created this problem," he said.

Rubel has taken 32 wickets from 24 Tests with one five-wicket haul.

Bangladesh will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s during their month-long tour, their first in South Africa since 2008.

Maybe it has something to do with the rape case against him. In any case he should not be in the squad. Rubbish Test bowler.

Read the full article and you will see that it has nothing to do with that

There was a name 'rubel Hossain' in Sa immigration black list which they misunderstood by Rubel Hossain ,the pacer. That's why all this happened. Shame that in this digital age only similar name can cause problem.

Looking forward to this. Finally some relevant cricket in the middle of a plethora of pointless bilateral ODI series.

Can't they black list this Rubel Hossain as well?

All Bangladeshis should look out for this guy called Aiden Markram, SA's under 19 world cup wining captain.. who will most likely to debut and open batting against BD. Just mark my words.. this guy is talented..

BANGLADESH MAKE STRONG START TO TOUR
Thursday, 21 September 2017

Michael Cohen starred with the ball but it was Bangladesh that enjoyed the better of day one of their three-day tour match against a South Africa Invitation XI at Sahara Park Willowmoore in Benoni on Thursday.

The teenager seamer claimed four for 23 in 11 overs as the visitors declared on 306 for seven after winning the toss and batting in what is their only warm-up game ahead of the two-match Test series starting next week.

Mominul Haque top scored with 68 (73 balls, 9 fours), while there were also half-centuries for captain Mushfiqur Rahim (63 off 85 balls, 8 fours) and Sabbir Rahman, who hit an unbeaten 58 (89 balls, 9 fours).

Star batsman Tamim Iqbal made just five, before retiring hurt.

The South Africans, under the captaincy of Heinrich Klaasen, then lost opener Isaac Dikgale for 12 after he was run out with what turned out to be the final ball of the day.

They closed on 21 for one, Yaseen Vallie at the other end unbeaten on nine.

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said his team were approaching their tour of South Africa with confidence after playing well in recent years. Rahim said he wanted his team to build on their form in home matches, including Test wins over England and Australia in the past year.”Bangladesh has been playing really well in the last couple of years,” he said.”The first target is to keep that intensity going. When we are playing at home we are really confident. It’s not going to be easy, but this is our next step. We want to do well in Africa as well. It is a great opportunity for us.”

Rahim admitted that the unavailability of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the two Tests against South Africa was a blow.”Shakib is a special player and no-one can replace him,” he said. He acknowledged that meeting the challenge of South Africa’s fast bowlers in local conditions would be crucial.”How we cope with the fast bowlers is key to our success,” he said.”But players like Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, Sabbir Rahman and Mominul Haque have improved a lot as individuals and hopefully they will take their responsibility to the middle.” Rahim said he expected good performances from his bowlers.

“They are inexperienced but skilful and if the wickets offer a little bit of spin, our spinners can do well.” Bangladesh declared at 306 for seven Thursday in the opening day of a three-day warm-up against a South African Invitation XI at Willowmoore Park in eastern Johannesburg suburb Benoni. The home team were 21 for one at the close. Opening batsman Tamim was forced to retire hurt with a thigh muscle injury after facing just 13 balls.

Tamim, a veteran of 51 Tests and the team’s all-time leading run-scorer, made five runs before leaving the field in the fifth over. Team manager Minhazul Nanna said the batsman had suffered a strained right thigh muscle. He left the field as a precaution and his condition would be assessed Friday following a scan. Bangladesh will play two Tests, three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals during the tour.

MARKRAM TO MAKE HIS DEBUT IN BANGLADESH TEST SERIES

Friday, 22 September 2017

AIDEN MARKRAM will make his debut for the Standard Bank Proteas in the first Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh to be played at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, from September 28 to October 2.

The 22-year-old Multiply Titans opening batsman was a member of the Test squad during the England tour without playing a match and has also captained the South Africa A four-day squad.

The other uncapped player in the squad is all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo. Phehlukwayo was also part of the tour group to England.

An extra all-rounder, Wayne Parnell, has been recalled to the 13-man squad with Vernon Philander, Chris Morris and Dale Steyn all ruled out through injury.

Wiaan Mulder has been invited to join the squad as cover for Parnell who will have to undergo a fitness test next week. In the event of Parnell coming through successfully Mulder will be returned to the bizhub Highveld Lions for their Sunfoil Series match starting next Thursday.

The Test squad has been named for the first match only.

“Aiden has been knocking on the door for some time now,” commented CSA National Selection Panel Convener Linda Zondi. “He gained valuable insight into the Proteas team culture during the tour of England and he has shown maturity beyond his years, having captained South Africa to victory in the under-19 World Cup and as captain of the South Africa A four-day side.

“The inclusion of Andile and Wayne provides the necessary all-rounders to give options as concerns the balance of the starting XI.

“The selection of some younger players is part of the process to build for the future and at the same time maintain our hard core of experience,” concluded Zondi.

Standard Bank Test squad: Faf du Plessis (Multiply Titans, capt), Hashim Amla (WSB Cape Cobras), Temba Bavuma (WSB Cape Cobras), Theunis de Bruyn (VKB Knights), Quinton de Kock (Multiply Titans), Dean Elgar (Multiply Titans), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Aiden Markram (Multiply Titans), Morne Morkel (Multiply Titans), Duanne Olivier (VKB Knights), Wayne Parnell (WSB Cape Cobras), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Kagiso Rabada (bizhub Highveld Lions).

Dhaka: Bangladesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain flew out to join the tour of South Africa on Friday after his departure was delayed by a bizarre case of mistaken identity involving a look-a-like namesake with a criminal record.

Rubel departed nearly a week late after officials proved he was not the unknown man barred by South African authorities, who had the same name, similar personal details and looked identical in his photo.

"We received (from South African authorities) a photo, name and other information and all these things completely matched with Rubel though the person was different," Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan told reporters.

"(The person) they had banned was not our player Rubel. There was a similar kind of person whose name, date of birth and all other information were similar, which confused them," he said.

Last week Rubel, who has taken 32 wickets from 24 Tests with one five-wicket haul, was prevented from boarding a flight to South Africa when he was denied immigration clearance.

Because of the delay, Rubel missed a three-day warm-up match at Benoni, but he should be available for the first Test which starts at Potchefstroom on 28 September.

The second and final Test will be played in Bloemfontein staring on 6 October. Bangladesh lost all four Tests in South Africa by an innings margin during their previous two visits in 2002 and 2008.

They will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals during their month-long tour.

All that is telling me is a case of human trafficking- someone used Rubel's info for a fake ID & transpass SAF.
Rubel Hossain isn't a common name & born on Jan 01, 1990 with all other info that separates people at issuance of visa can't be so identical that computer aided scanning process can't separate. Every BD passport is machine readable now.

A solid batting display by the South Africa Invitation XI forced Bangladesh into a difficult second day of their three-day tour match at Sahara Park Willowmoore in Benoni on Friday.

Zubayr Hamza (60 off 101 balls, 10 fours), Matthew Christensen (53 off 123 balls, 6 fours) and Shaun von Berg (62 not out off 110 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) all hit half-centuries for the home side as they amassed 306 for seven declared, seven runs shy of the visitors’ day one total of 313 for eight declared.

The Bangladeshis then faced three overs in their second innings, reaching six without loss. Star opener Tamim Iqbal did not open the batting after retiring hurt on day one.

Apart from the three half-centurions for the South Africans, there were also useful contributions from Matthew Breetzke (44) and Migael Pretorius (42).

The tourists used eight bowlers in total, with no particular stand-out performance. Shafiul Islam claimed two for 51, with fellow seamer Subashis Roy was the most economical after taking one for 27 in 15 overs.

The match is the only warm-up game for Bangladesh ahead of a two-match Test series against the Standard Bank Proteas starting next week.

Should have debuted in ENG, but better that he now can make a banging start. In recent times, since AB, only 3 junior SAF players excited me; Markram is the 3rd one. Other two were De Kok & Rabada ...... not a bad company for the kid.

VON BERG TAKES FOUR AS BANGLADESH DRAW WARM-UP MATCH

Saturday, 23 September 2017

Shaun von Berg claimed four wickets to hamper Bangladesh on the final day of their three-day tour match that ended in a draw against a South Africa Invitation XI in Benoni on Saturday.

The leg-spinner claimed four for 77 as the visitors reached 235/9 at Sahara Park Willowmoore.

Sabbir Rahman followed his first-innings 58 not out with another half century after he top-scored with 67 (98 balls, 8 fours), while Imrul Kayes hit an attacking 51 (54 balls, 7 fours, 1 six).

Apart from Von Berg, there were also two wickets for Leus du Plooy (2/51).

Star opener Tamim Iqbal did not bat after suffering an injury scare in the first innings when he retired hurt following some discomfort in his right thigh. But he is expected to be fit for the first Test against the Standard Bank Proteas starting on Thursday.

The match was the only warm-up game for Bangladesh ahead of the two-match Sunfoil Test series starting on Thursday.

It is best chance for weakend BD to do something in test in SA against Weakend SA team. Hope they do well.
That's on you, nobody asked Bangla to rest any of their main players.

SA are a different beast at home vs Asian sides, should win this easily.

We are not whining about Weakend bd team, just saying that it would be full strength bd team if it had mosaddek and bijoy and shakib. And SA also missing their first choice bowlers Steyn, philander, moris etc though I know that their replacements are also good.

Not poms its proteas

Bw r u expecting rank turners in protea turf's

Some hard days in life waiting for mehedi just like he went past in newzeland

Very tough time ahead of Mehedy. He didn't bowl that well against Australia on turning track in Bangladesh.Infact he needs much more improvement in his bowling to be a world class offie.

I wouldn't take him in my XI if shakib were there but now bd has nothing to do but taking him in the playing XI.

Bangladesh need to find a leggy who can get them wickets in Oz, SA, England- all either vulnerable to wrist spin or at least it suits their surfaces better. WI usually weak vs legspin too. Would really help them overseas I thin, their pacers aren't going to outdo any other pace attacks so they need a spinning threat.

Cape Town - Bangladesh seam bowler Taskin Ahmed is confident they will be ready for the first Test against South Africa, starting in Potchefstroom on Thursday, despite struggling in a warm-up match over the weekend.

The Tigers played a South Africa Invitational XI made up of young players in a three-day tour match and failed to bowl them out, the home team scoring 313/8 in their only innings at the crease.

Taskin, who returned figures of 1-70 from 14 overs, said the surface for the tour game was slow and flat and the tourists are not expecting the same conditions for the first Test.

The right-arm pacer, who is expected to led the bowling attack against the Proteas, also said the Bangladesh players are struggling to adapt to the altitude on the Highveld.

Taskin said on Sunday: "The pitch [in Benoni] was flat and slow; it almost seemed like home.

"I doubt we will get a wicket like that in the first Test. Altitude is little bit high [in South Africa].

"We had a little bit of trouble with that during the practice match. But we are adjusting to it well. Hopefully we will adjust fully before the first Test."

The second Test of the two-match series will be played in Bloemfontein from 6 October.

Cape Town - South Africa opener Dean Elgar feels that his new opening partner Aiden Markram could bring some much needed stability to the top of the order.

Elgar is familiar with the young man who was named captain of the Titans franchise where the left-handed Proteas’ opener plies his trade in Domestic cricket.

They recently shared a 184 run partnership in the Sunfoil Series at Supersport Park with Markram claiming the man of the match award with scores of 119 and 87.

Elgar feels that stability at the top will translate to strength in the batting unit as a whole which struggled in England.

Heino Kuhn was Elgar's partner for all four Tests and could only manage a highest score of 34.

In a press conference on Monday Elgar “I have been asked this question of having a new partner all the time at every press conference and the thing is maybe I was not outspoken about it in the past.

"Now‚ I think I have developed a voice with regards to the topic and I do think it’s unfair for a batting unit to be settled if the opening unit is unsettled.

"Your core with regards to the batting collective is your opening pair.

“Openers set up the rest for the guys to come through and play naturally.

"We need stability and consistency with regards to the combinations.

"I am extremely excited for Aiden because he has shown over the last season or two that he is a special player.

"He is still very young but he has shown that he is developing every time he holds his bat.”

Elgar sees great potential in his partnership with Markram and is eager to get to work on it against Bangladesh.

He added: “It is exciting times to have him there.

"We have just gone through a successful four-day game together for the Titans as an opening pair and hopefully we have longevity.

"We need to have a bit of stability and consistency and hopefully we can have a couple of years or seasons together.

"Obviously‚ it will improve our batting throughout the summer.

Elgar does the feel the need to discuss the step up to Test cricket with Markram at great length.

He went on: “He is trying to take everything in at the moment because things happened so quickly.

"He went from being Titans captain in the Sunfoil Series to Test opener in a week.

"From my side‚ it’s good just to have him settle his own mind and take it in his own way.

"I am sure he has his own way and when we get closer to the Test match we will obviously sit down and have a normal chat.

"We are actually driving together to Potchefstroom on Wednesday‚ which is a good thing.

"Sometimes you don’t need to talk cricket‚ you just need to give him peace of mind because he is a special cricketer.

"Test cricket can sometimes cloud your thoughts but it is my job to calm him and make him feel welcomed.”

Proteas hungry for Test wins – Rabada

Tuesday, 26 September 2017

The Standard Bank Proteas enter the Sunfoil Test series against Bangladesh starting at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Thursday with a determined hunger to return to winning ways. The 3-1 loss to England in August put an end to the Proteas’ proud winning streak of four consecutive series wins, a rally the squad is motivated to resume.

The selectors have continued with the consistency in selection that has been the backbone of the squad’s success in the past year, with newly appointed head coach, Ottis Gibson, bringing in fresh perspective and ideas. Proteas fast bowler, Kagiso Rabada, believes the current mix of players and coaching staff is the perfect balance to revive their winning ways.

“ We have just gotten back together after a break and there is a new coach which is exciting,” he said in Potchefstroom on Tuesday. “ You can tell that it is a new beginning with the same team, there are only a couple of new faces. At the same time we still have our old coaching staff, only the head coach is new. It feels like a new beginning with the same people. We will be settling in and this match will help immensely.

“Things like that happen in cricket,” he said of the disappointing series against England. “ We know we are a talented side and we have good skills. We want to get back on our feet, in England I don’t think we played bad cricket, we were on the wrong end of some important moments. We have recognised that, and will be looking to pounce on them (moments) and get back to our winning ways, we certainly know how to win.

“ Everyone has a drive to want to win,” he explained. “ That is what we want to do, we want to play good cricket after a long break. We are going to have to get back to it quickly, that is the challenge.”

Rabada and Morne Morkel will carry the fast-bowling mantle in the absence of Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander, which will be another opportunity to grow and expose the pace resources in the Proteas setup. The squad had a first glance at the pitch during their first practice at the ground on Tuesday, but have identified the need to adapt to what is presented for Senwes Park’s second International Test match.

“ Dale hasn’t been around for a while but he has proven to be a key player, he is world-class and so is Vernon,” Rabada said of the injured duo. “ We do have guys who are up-and-coming so this will be a big test to see whether we can do it without Vernon and Dale. I am quite sure that we can.

“ Usually in franchise cricket it’s a good wicket,” he said of the conditions. “It is good to bat and on and the outfield is extremely quick, right now I’m not too sure, we will have to see. There is still something in the wicket for the bowlers but they are good batting conditions. There is good bounce and pace, it will be interesting to see how this one plays.”

The only match to be played at the venue was a reflection of the high-scoring nature of the conditions, with South Africa beating Bangladesh by an innings and 160-runs in 2002. The win was underpinned by a mammoth first innings score of 482/5 led by centuries from Herschelle Gibbs 114, Gary Kirsten 160 and Jacques Kallis 139* as well as a match-winning 5/21 from Kallis with the ball.

'It's possible to score big here'

Among all the Bangladesh batsmen, Imrul Kayes had the heaviest cloud hanging over him when the national squad landed in South Africa for a two-Test series against the second-ranked team in Test cricket. The left-hander had scored just 21 runs in four innings in the home series against Australia in August-September, albeit while batting at the unfamiliar number three spot.

When naming the squad for the tour, chief selector Minhajul Abedin however said that as he is adept at playing the ball square of the wicket, Imrul was considered for the demanding tour on fast, bouncy pitches. That faith seems to be well-founded so far as he scored 34 and 51 in the tour match at Benoni.

“Actually, whenever you score, you can get confidence,” said the 30-year-old to reporters after the team's practice at Senwes Park yesterday. “It does not matter whether I score at home or here. Runs always give you confidence.”

Imrul has been the nearly man of Bangladesh cricket. He has had big moments, such as hitting 150 in a Bangladesh record 312-run opening stand with Tamim Iqbal against Pakistan in Khulna 2015. But he has not often been able to hold on to that spot, as a Test total of 30 in almost nine years and an average of 26.55 explains. But it was playing the kind of cricket required now that Imrul made his latest comeback to the side when, batting in the warm-up one-dayer against England in 2016 he hit a hundred and followed that up with another century in the first ODI just under a year ago.

He had then credited coach Chandika Hathurusingha for instructing him to be ever-ready to pull out the cut and pull against the English pacers. More of that will be needed here. He is also one of the three batsmen, along with Tamim and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, to have played in South Africa on the 2008 tour.

“I think in Bangladesh batsmen tend to play on the front foot more but here the ball will be back of a length more,” said Imrul. “We are practising leaving the ball and playing off the back foot. The cut and pull are important scoring shots here -- we have to become strong in these shots.”

All the talk has been about the pace and bounce here, but Imrul preferred to look at those factors as advantages.

“Obviously there will be more pace and bounce here. But I believe bounce and pace means the ball comes on to the bat nicely. If a batsman is good at playing shots square of the wicket then it is possible scoring big runs here,” he added. “If we maintain the momentum with which our batsmen have been batting, of course we can challenge South Africa.”

He was, however, under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task in hand. “I believe not only us, any country in the world would rate a South Africa tour the toughest. Similarly when South Africa goes to our country our conditions might be considered toughest to them. Home advantage always plays a part for everyone.”

roteas face first task ahead of bumper home season

Wednesday, 27 September 2017

Faf du Plessis’s tenure as South Africa’s captain across all three formats comes to an anticipated start with the first Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh starting at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Thursday. The captain says the series is an opportunity for the Proteas to ‘start afresh’, as he takes full reign alongside coach, Ottis Gibson.

The Proteas will feature in a bumper home season this summer, with incoming tours against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, India and Australia headlining a spree of 23 International matches across the formats. For now, the challenge is Potchefstroom, which is geared up to play the perfect host for the Proteas in only the second Test match to be played at the venue.

“Grounds like this won’t usually get a lot of Test cricket because there are a lot of stadium venues,” he said to the media at Senwes Park on Wednesday. “ It is great for a small town like Potch to get a Test, hopefully the students will come and support us. It’s nice to take the game around the country, we don’t mind it.”

Multiply Titans captain, Aiden Markram, is set to become the 97th Test player to represent South Africa since re-admission when he partners with Dean Elgar at the top of the order. The 22-year-old has made remarkable strides at domestic level since leading South Africa U19 to World Cup glory in 2014, and currently averages 44.33 in 34 first-class matches with six hundreds and 11 fifties to his name.

“ For me it’s important that he doesn’t listen to everything that has been said about him,” Du Plessis said of the youngster. “ It’s important for him to focus on the fact that he is playing another game, walking out to play like he would for the Titans. There is no extra pressure on him, in fact I’ll try to take that away from him so that he can be comfortable and have the freedom to go out and play.”

One aspect Du Plessis and the rest of the batsmen will be looking to improve on from last season is the conversion of starts into big hundreds. Dean Elgar scored the only century during the series against England, a glaring let down on a key performance area that has underpinned past batting success.

“ As a batting unit we haven’t scored the amount of runs that we would have liked,” he admitted. “ The conditions were really tough in England, speaking to someone like Alastair Cook who said those were the toughest conditions he has played in in England and he has played a few matches there.

“ These are home conditions, this is where we need to step up and score some runs on the board,” he added. “ It looks like a good batting wicket out there and all of the guys are in good touch. It helped everyone to go and play in the Sunfoil Series matches this weekend, it has been a while since everyone was available to do that. There was a lot of benefit for the batting unit, everyone scored hundreds and scored big runs, that will stand us in good stead for these two Test matches.”

Without Sakhib, it will be interesting to see how the tigers cope with alien conditions. It will all depend on how BD batsman handle Rabada and Morkel. Maharaj is also someone who cannot be taken lightly. The BD bowling will depend mostly on Fizz. The spinners might not be that effective on SA pitches. The good thing for BD though is that SA's batting has been low on confidence in recent times, if they can capitalise on that, they can surely surprise the hosts.

Overall good analysis.

JP DUMINY will captain the SA Invitation XI that also includes AB de Villiers for the 50 overs tour match against Bangladesh to be played at Bloemfontein’s Mangaung Oval on Thursday, October 12.

“Now that JP has retired from first-class cricket this will be a quality match play opportunity for him ahead of the Momentum ODI Series,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) National Selection Panel Convener Linda Zondi. “We are expecting AB to play in the next round of Sunfoil Series matches but he too will benefit from some game time in the shorter format.

“This match also provides the ideal opportunity for us to expand our player base for white-ball cricket, grow our talent and generally plan for the future. Aiden Markram, Keshav Maharaj, Khaya Zondo, Heinrich Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder are all players who fall into this category.

“Robbie Frylinck is yet another player to be looked at in the all-rounder category while we have identified Matthew Breetzke as a young player who will play a key role for South Africa at next year’s under-19 World Cup. He is 18 and yet another outstanding talent to come out of Grey High in Port Elizabeth.

“One of the reasons why India do so well at youth level is that they expose their younger players to competition in senior cricket at a young age and we intend to follow a similar path going forward,” concluded Zondi.

SA Invitation XI: JP Duminy (WSB Cape Cobras, capt), Matthew Breetzke (EP), Mbulelo Budaza (VKB Knights), AB de Villiers (Multiply Titans), Robbie Frylinck (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Beuran Hendricks (bizhub Highveld Lions), Heinrich Klaasen (Multiply Titans), Keshav Maharaj (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Aiden Markram (Multiply Titans), Wiaan Mulder (bizhub Highveld Lions), Malusi Siboto (Multiply Titans), Khaya Zondo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins)

South Africa strike bowler Morne Morkel will take no further part in the two-match series against Bangladesh after suffering a side strain that will sideline him for six weeks, officials said on Monday.

Morkel had taken two wickets in his first over at the start of Bangladesh’s second innings on the fourth day of the first test at Senwes Park on Sunday but subsequently hurt himself bowling and had to be taken off.

He joins a long list of South African test pacemen ruled out of the series through injury.

Chris Morris, Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn are all expected to return for the three-Test series against India and four matches against Australia at home from January to March next year.

Media Advisory: Paterson replaces injured Morkel

Monday, 2 October 2017

WSB Cape Cobras fast bowler, Dane Paterson, has been added to the Standard Bank Proteas Test squad for the second Sunfoil Test against Bangladesh starting at Manguang Oval in Bloemfontein on Friday. Paterson replaces Morne Morkel, who sustained a Grade two tear to the left abdominal oblique muscle during the 333-run victory at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Monday.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee explained the injury: “ Morne complained of a sharp pain to his left side yesterday and immediately aborted his bowling spell. Subsequent scans this morning confirmed a Grade two tear to the left abdominal oblique muscle which rules him out of the remainder of the series. He will need a 4-6 week recovery period and will target a return for the T20 Global League in November.”

The squad will travel to Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Stupid bd Captain and coach will join them to make sure of SA's win.

I think, with a smart Captain & Coach as well, they'll beat us there, until we can manage playing short staff.

Hopefully this series will expose the follies of selecting players like Imrul, Sabbur, and Riyad. And also the folly of dropping a guy like Momin.

PATERSON CALLED UP TO PROTEAS ODI SQUAD

Wednesday, 04 October 2017

“Faf du Plessis will lead the Proteas now that he has taken over the captaincy from AB de Villiers in the ODI format. This is the start of our campaign to begin preparing our squad for the 2019 ICC World Cup,” Zondi concluded.

Bangladesh were bundled for 90 in pursuit of 424 in the first Test versus South Africa at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. After the hammering received, Mushfiqur Rahim and co. will be eager to level the series in the second and final Test at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein. However, it won't be a cakewalk for sure. Bangladesh's middle order batsman Mahmudullah has, however, asserted that his side has the skills and temperament to compete, like they did in New Zealand.

Mahmudullah told, "Shakib (Al-Hasan) made a double hundred while Mushfiq (Mushfiqur Rahim) made 150 in New Zealand and that sort of performances give us confidence that we can do well on any kind of wicket. We have got the skill and temperament and we are confident to implement it in the next Test. We have spoken among ourselves and in the team meeting our mistakes was discussed at length. We can hope to learn from our mistakes. We are really disappointed with our batting as we could not do justice to our skill. We made lot of small errors but we are confident that we can come out of it and play better in the next Test."

One aspect wherein Bangladesh were highly scrutinised in their 333-run loss in the series opener was that despite wickets falling like nine pins, batsmen continued to play their shots. Mahmudullah defended his teammates and stated, "I don't see anything wrong in playing shots. Each player has different way of getting set at the wicket. Some like to play shots while others have different mindset. As long as they know what they are doing there is nothing wrong in it. I don't think saying all these have much of an implication and we must make sure that we make a comeback in the next game."

Bangladesh have done well in their recent home series against England and Australia, and even drew level with Sri Lanka in their own den. They will like to stage a fightback in the second Test before the shorter formats.
