Bangladesh tour of West Indies (2024) - Discussion Thread

BD - 186/6 (74.2 overs).

Trailing by 264 runs.

65 runs are needed to avoid a follow-on.

200 is up for BD.

I think BD have done well on Day 3. They have only lost 4 wickets in the whole day (they often get all-out much quicker).

BD - 202/6 (80.2 overs).

Trailing by 248 runs.

Looks like it'll be a grind taking 20 wickets on this slowish surface. WI will need to give themselves enough time to bowl BD out twice.

Just 19 more runs are needed to avoid follow-on.

BD - 232/6 (87 overs).

Trailing by 218 runs.

Bit of aggro between Alzarri and Taskin.

Taskin was hit on the helmet a while ago ducking into a bouncer from Alzarri.

BD tailenders are backing a long way to leg and Alzarri is following them.

BD have avoided the follow-on and managed to take the score to 269/9 (98 overs).

They are now trailing by 181 runs.

Stumps for Day 3.

BOWLERS KEEP WEST INDIES IN CONTROL OF OPENING TEST AGAINST BANGLADESH AT STUMPS ON DAY THREE

The West Indies continued to hold the advantage at stumps on day three of the opening Test against Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. The visitors closed the day at 269 for 9 in their first innings reply to the 450 for 9 declared posted by the hosts.

The Caribbean team’s four-pronged pace attack had to be patient throughout the morning session, but the experienced Kemar Roach made an early breakthrough when he accounted for Shahadat Hossain Dipu for 18 runs in the slip cordon. In that instance, Roach, playing his 83rd Test, broke a 45-run third-wicket partnership for the visitors.

Mominul Haque and Litton Das advanced the score to lunch at 105 for 3 but were kept in check by the home team’s disciplined bowling. Bangladesh added only 65 runs in 25 overs during the opening session, scoring just over 2.6 runs per over.

In the post-lunch session, Jayden Seales provided the magical moment with ball in hand as he trapped Haque leg before wicket for an even 50 at 128 for 4. Seventeen runs later, Shamar Joseph joined in the act by dislodging Das for 40 at 165 for 5.

Stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz was antagonized by a barrage of short-pitched bowling and folded immediately after tea to Alzarri Joseph, ballooning a catch to short leg for 23 at 166 for 6.

The West Indies were now sensing a massive first-innings lead, but the hosts were denied by a defiant 72-run seventh wicket stand between Jaker Ali and Taijul Islam. Ali notched his second half-century in Tests, but the resistance was broken by Alzarri Joseph, who rocked back the off stump of Islam at 234 for 7.

Twelve runs later, a stunning running catch from Jayden Seales accounted for Ali, who tried to clear the mid-wicket fence on 53. Seales, with quick anticipation, ran 30 meters to his left before putting in a dive to pluck the ball meters from the boundary off the bowling of Justin Greaves.

Greaves showed his all-round ability as his out swinging delivery claimed the edge of Hasan Mahmud, with Alick Athanaze gobbling up the chance at second slip to leave the visitors tottering at 257 for 9.

Bad light put an end to the day’s play with the visitors limping to the close at 269 for 9, still trailing by 181 runs.

Alzarri Joseph is the pick of the bowlers so far with 3 for 69, while Jayden Seales and Justin Greaves have two wickets apiece.

Joseph was pleased with his performance throughout the day on what he considered a flat wicket.

“My performance was pretty okay, could have been a little bit more patient at times but all and all it’s a good performance from me.”
The Antiguan native is comfortable with the position of the game for the home team.

“The pitch is a bit slower than yesterday which was the best day to bat, so I think we assessed well as bowlers, tomorrow we just need to come and assess again so we will see how it goes.”

Play resumes at 10:00 AM local time on Monday, day four.

Can't understand the declaration today. When you're that far behind you have to try and get as many runs out of the defecit as possible.

The unexpected decision was made ahead of play at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, and would have come as a shock to those following the game. West Indies declared their first innings on 450-9 after a century from Justin Greaves and 90 and 97 from Alick Athanaze and Mikyle Louis respectively put them ahead of the game.

In response, Bangladesh were reduced to 66-3 when Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Zakir Hasan and Shahadat Hossain all fell cheaply. The middle order, however, offered some resilience, Mominul Haque and Jaker Ali both scoring half-centuries, and a 40 from Litton Das both taking them past 200. But, by the time they were nine wickets down, with Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam at the crease, Bangladesh were still almost 200 runs off West Indies' first innings score.

At the close of play on day three, bad light ending proceedings early, Bangladesh were 269-9. Despite Neither Taskin nor Shoriful being renowned batters, the 12 runs they'd added in three and a half overs before the end of play gave some hope of at least encroaching slightly more into the hosts' lead, especially with plenty of time left in the game.

However, before play on day four, stand-in Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz enacted the declaration. West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Louis made their way out into the middle.

There could be several reasons for Bangladesh's decision to declare. The runs Taskin and Shoriful could have added on day four likely would have made little difference to the deficit Bangladesh were facing. Equally, their only hope of getting 10 West Indies wickets quickly and chasing a fourth innings target would be through their fast-bowling contingent, and keeping them free of injury is essential.

Taskin is coming good for them now to give them a slight chance. But I don't see why he couldn't have used the long handle earlier today. He's not trying to survive or soak up deliveries so the risk of injury was much lower, he just needed to hit it around for 3-4 overs if possible

I think declaring at 269/9 was a mistake because BD were still trailing by 181 runs.

You don't declare when you are trailing by that many.

Brainless decision.

Windies - 136/7 (39.3 overs).

Lead is now worth 317 runs.

I think Windies can now declare. This should be enough on Day 5.

West indies is careless here. THey took the game too easy. If they had shown the same intensity they showed against Australia at Gabba this match would have been over by now.

Taskin has taken a 6-fer. Well done.

This is his best bowling figure in Test format.

6/64.

Not enough Canadian Banglas to cheer up their team in the Caribbean.

I have never gone to stadium to watch a cricket game. I remember I once received tickets for 2000 Asia Cup but I still decided to watch from home.

Why go to stadium when you can watch from the comfort of your home?

Nepal has more passionate fanbase and actually travel with their team than the hype train of East Pakistan.

Maybe they are jobless? I don't know.

I have a full-time job and I am checking scores while working.

Unless BCB pays me to travel with the team, why would I travel with them? LOL.

To be fair, Windies grounds are generally always empty during Test matches.

During England's games, there is a bit of crowd due to Barmy Army.
Yeah. They used to be very busy years ago but now mainly dead and dull stands.

Years ago it was difficult to watch Windies games with family because of the women dancing in jacuzzis in the crowd.

Bros surprised me with this declaration.

This is fearless cricket from Bangladeshis.

I think it was not a good decision.

They were trailing by 181 runs. You don't declare when you are that behind.

Anyway, looks like damage is minimal as Windies folded for 152.

Caribbean crowds were very colorful then. They were far more passionate too.

Windies reviews an LBW decision.

Umpire's call. Mominul survives.

BD - 1/1 (3 overs).

333 more to win.

WI batsmen just can't follow up a good performance with another. Their FC averages are low for a reason.

In the 2nd and 3rd Tests vs England, you knew after decent 1st inns scores they would collapse in the 2nd.

They're still favourites here but they shouldn't have opened the door for BD to get back into the contest whatsoever.

Their bowling is far superior to many in the world. Especially pace department. But one of the worst fielding units. Can't count how many times their fielding has let their fast bowlers down

Bangladesh team you are not bazball team to make aggressive declaration. Getting embarrassed in the end. lol They should have focused on what lower ranked teams aim for. A draw.

4 catches dropped so far atleast. This is the biggest reason why WI is in this situation. They even failed to qualify for world cup ODi because of dropped catches. They have quality pace attack. But lack of fielding practice let them down

Jayden Seales has a terrific home record. The next test is putting together a body of work overseas.

He hasn't a great white ball record so not as likely to be poached by franchises as other WI cricketers.

Seales has 67 wickets in 16 Tests. Average of 23.

Great record.

Rooting for WI to defeat and humble Bangla.

:qdkcheeky

So far so good.

BD - 109/7 (with 225 more runs to win).

They tried to copy Ben stokes type declaration. But the result they are getting is similar to the result Shan Masood got after declaration.

Cricket is not supposed to be for Bangladesh. There is a reason Afghanistan made their debut decades after them and left them in the dust. Having fanatical fans in one thing but performing on the ground is another story.

West Indies Closing in on First Test Victory After Inspired Spells from Fast Bowlers Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales on Fourth and Penultimate Day

Fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales have put the West Indies on the brink of victory at stumps on day four of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Chasing an improbable 334 for victory, Bangladesh faltered to 109 for 7 at the close, with Roach and Seales snaring three wickets each.

Bangladesh made a sporting declaration at the start of the day on their overnight score of 269 for 9 but surrendered a 181-run first-innings lead to the West Indies. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis opened for the home team, adding 25 runs before Louis edged to wicketkeeper Litton Das off Taskin Ahmed for 8. Keacy Carty followed soon after, caught in the slips off Ahmed for 3, and Brathwaite was dismissed for 23, leaving the West Indies at 39 for 3.

A 50-run partnership between Kavem Hodge and Alick Athanaze steadied the innings. Athanaze's aggressive 42 from 63 balls included seven fours, while Hodge played more sedately. The West Indies slipped from 89 for 3 to 95 for 6 after Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took quick wickets. Alzarri Joseph and Joshua Da Silva added quick runs before Da Silva was caught for 22, and Joseph was dismissed for 17. The West Indies' innings ended at 152, with Ahmed finishing with figures of 6 for 64.

With a 334-run target, Bangladesh struggled against a fiery West Indies bowling attack. Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales took three wickets each, leaving Bangladesh at 23 for 4 early on. Roach dismissed Zakir Hasan in the opening over, while Seales accounted for Mahmudul Hasan Joy. Roach's spectacular diving catch removed Mominul Haque, and the team continued to press for wickets.

Litton Das, the stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Jaker Ali showed some resistance, but Miraz's 45 ended with a brilliant one-handed catch by Joshua Da Silva. Seales took two more wickets, leaving Bangladesh at 109 for 7 at stumps. Roach and Seales finished with figures of 3 for 20 and 3 for 31, respectively.

Roach credited the bowling attack's skill set and clear plans for the day's success. He now has 54 Test wickets at the venue, the most by any bowler. Play resumes at 10:00 AM local time on Tuesday, day five.

Bangladesh should send their main team to take part in Ranji trophy plate division. It will definitely help them as they get to play on different kind of pitches against different variety of teams. BCCI should help them out. THey can include Ireland as well if they are interested. It will improve their ability to play Test matches. Want other Asian sides to do well.

Windies pace battery is very impressive right now. Beating Australia down under and causing havoc at home

Absolute shellacking handed out by West Indies. Bangladesh is an embarrassment to the sport.

I hope they do better in future. They should drop their ego and play in plate division league of Ranji Trophy. THey can get better. Their domestic structure is clearly not upto standard.

BD fans and team always fizzle out after taking a big game. We should call them fizzballs
Yea.. Declaration now looks totally foolish. Not like they were going to add 100 runs from that point. But you still try to bat on day 4 and stretch it for an hour.

The ultimate scar on the sanctity of cricket world was done by BCCI under Dalmiya in getting East Pakistan a test status. Literally ruined the magic of yesteryears.

The white masters of ECB and CA were absolutely right then in opposing the test status but they failed. Isn't it? @sweep_shot
Bangladesh is an embarrassment to any sport.. good job BD

we might be missing great sporting rivalries that would have been possible with good cricket team from BD, but that is being compensated by their fans providing all the entertainment with their clownish behavior, Nagin dances, incessant chest thumping, emotional outbursts including mal-nutrioned men crying on live tv, comedic display, early celebrations leading to ultimate failures, laughable skills and downright pathetic athleticism.

Don't mistake, BD fans are a great source of entertainment although their cricketing team is pathetic. Overall BD cricket team is a great addition to entertainment industry but a poor addition to international cricket.

stretching it for an hour and adding say 30 runs would have made a difference. It is okay to lose but once you compete and come very close to your opponents in their own den, it can add to their confidence in the next matches. It was a brainf*** moment for BD. If there was not much time i can see them declaring overnight and forcing WI to set a challenging target. This was a poorly thought out, machismo declaration. BD has everything apart from actual skills

The West Indies secured a commanding 201-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test on Tuesday, clinching the match after tailender Shoriful Islam was forced to retire hurt.

Chasing a daunting target of 334, Bangladesh began the final day at 109-7 and quickly folded for 132-9 at North Sound. Alzarri Joseph was instrumental in the morning session, dismissing Jaker Ali and Hasan Mahmud early on. Shoriful, the last man, retired injured after being struck on the back of his shoulder by a Joseph bouncer in the fifth over.

Joseph had earlier sent Hasan Mahmud back to the pavilion for a duck in the third over. Jaker, who scored a half-century in the first innings, managed 31 before being trapped lbw by Joseph.

Bangladesh's batting faltered throughout the second innings, with only four players reaching double figures. Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz top-scored with 45. For the West Indies, opening bowlers Kemar Roach (3-20) and Jayden Seales (3-45) were the standout performers.

The second Test of the series is set to begin in Jamaica on Saturday.
