The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set for a fiery showdown as England and Australia lock horns at Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium. Two of cricket’s fiercest rivals, both teams will be desperate to kick off their campaign with a statement win. England, led by Jos Buttler, are out to prove a point after their crushing 3-0 ODI series defeat to India. But having fully fit Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, their pace attack suddenly looks more menacing. The ever-reliable Joe Root brings experience, while Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone inject raw power into the batting. Ben Duckett and Phil Salt make up a destructive opening pair while the talented Jamie Smith will look to make his mark as well.

Spin wizard Adil Rashid will be key in containing Australia’s firepower, but the onus is on Buttler to lead from the front and turn England’s white-ball fortunes around. Meanwhile, Australia enters the tournament with their own share of struggles. Regular skipper Pat Cummins, along with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh, is sidelined, leaving the Aussies with an inexperienced bowling attack. But under Steve Smith’s captaincy, they remain a dangerous unit. With Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey anchoring the batting and Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell ready to unleash fireworks, they won’t go down without a fight. Spencer Johnson steps into the big shoes of Starc, while Adam Zampa and Tanveer Sangha will have to spin their magic on a pitch expected to favor batters. The Gaddafi Stadium promises runs, but under the lights, the pacers could still play a decisive role. Both teams know that a win here isn’t just about two points - it’s about momentum, confidence, and striking an early psychological blow in a tournament where there’s little room for slip-ups. With pride, history, and a potential semi-final spot at stake, expect nothing less than an electrifying contest between two giants of the game.

England playing XI:

Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith (wk), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c), Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Jos Buttler- England pre-match press conference, 21 Feb '25
[Reporter:]

Are you relaxed, recharged, and ready to go? And then what are you expecting from your team in the next couple of weeks?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah, I think everyone is in that space. We've had a nice few days in between the two tours, travelling here and Abu Dhabi, and everyone is very excited for the build-up into the first game.

[Reporter:]

What's the thinking behind Jamie Smith at number three?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah we just feel it's a nice position for him to give him a sort of free hit to try and really impact the game, make that that top three really dynamic. Jamie's someone with incredible talent and taken to international cricket so well that we feel he's got the game there and can place him in that position to try and have a really big impact with a number of guys behind him.

[Reporter:]

You say he's never batted in that position but you have full confidence he can carry out the role with aplomb given how well he started his international career, especially in the Test arena.

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah, absolutely. He's obviously got the game technically and tactically, but I think the head on his shoulders seems to be one of the biggest strengths. Nothing seems to faze him too much. I think you could ask him to bat anywhere in the line-up and it wouldn't phase him. We feel it gives him a nice position to try and really impact the game, make some big runs, and put some pressure on the opposition.

[Reporter:]

You obviously dropped back down to six. Do you think that's where you can get the best out of yourself in the ODI format and rediscover your best form?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah, I think, to be honest, I feel very confident in my own form. I feel like I've been hitting the ball really well and over time ODI’s have always been my best format. I feel excited, optimistic and I think one thing with all the line-ups - you can always move around, dependent on the game. So yeah looking forward to it.

[Reporter:]

In ODI cricket from last four series, you collectively lost those series, but in the last month you're playing in subcontinent conditions. Although you had some bad results losing both white ball series. On one side, how much is it a positive for you and your team that you are playing in these conditions and the second side in sense of morality losing those all-ODI series, how much does that count for team spirit?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah I think the conditions will be different here as they were in India. I think everywhere you go around the world everywhere has its own nuances and different conditions. We've got lots of guys who've played in Pakistan before, guys who've played in the PSL, so sharing those experiences. And then every day in a game of cricket, you've got to turn up and assess conditions and play accordingly and work on that. And besides results, the environment in the group is great. The mood in the camp is really excited and the perception is one of huge optimism looking forward. We know we've got a lot of talent, we know we want to perform to the level that we know we're capable of. We're working hard to do that and we know the results will come.

[Reporter:]

Tomorrow’s opponents Australia, their three premier fast bowlers; Cummins, Hazlewood and Stark are absent. Do you think you have an extra advantage in tomorrow's clash?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah the three guys you mentioned there have been a real pillar of success for Australia for a long period of time, so naturally there'll be a miss for their team but they’ve got some top players to step into those shoes as well and Australia always over time have performed very well in ICC tournaments. We expect a really tough challenge. England and Australia, there's always a great rivalry and a competitive match. And obviously, in the Champions Trophy format, each game is really a massive game. So, we look forward to it.

[Reporter:]

You always love to visit Pakistan. Only two countries feel scared to be over here. The country will be different. Crowd will be different. But I assure you that fun and thrill will be more. What do you think, Toss will matter or not?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah, well, we're obviously excited to be in Pakistan as well. The toss may play a role in the game but I think we've all played long enough now to know that whatever happens at the toss, you win or lose it, you've got to play well enough to win the game of cricket.

[Reporter:]

As far as your playing 11 is concerned for the match against Australia. If we look at your bowling attack, you have three pacers and one regular specialist spinner in the side and two more spin options. Do you think in Pakistan, on Pakistan tracks - you will have seen the first match between Pakistan and New Zealand - pacers had to face a tough time. Do you think your bowling combination is right against Australia for the first game?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yes, we do. We back those guys that we've picked. A really exciting line-up with the ball there. The guys who can bowl at high pace but with different skills if required. Obviously, Adil has been a brilliant performer for us for such a long time and will be ably assisted by Livingston and Joe Root.

[Reporter:]

What's your opinion about the Gaddafi Stadium pitch? How many runs would be enough on this track?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah, one more than the opposition is going to be crucial. Right now, it looks like a really good wicket. Some of the tri-series games here obviously were high scoring, so we're expecting a really good wicket. I think teams will be looking forward to batting on it. But absolutely, we've got to - as I just said, we work it out on the day. How is the pitch playing? What is required of you as a bowler, as a batter, to have the most impactful time you can on the match?

[Reporter:]

Jofra Archer - he has come back after a long time. He played against India. He also has a good rivalry with Australian players. So how do you feel about Jofra Archer for tomorrow’s match?

[Jos Buttler:]

Yeah, he's fully fit. He's been fit and firing now for obviously a number of - 18 months or so since being out of the game for a while. So, he's really excited to put together that kind of length of time back on the field and he's obviously a superstar of the game for us. He is someone as a captain you always know you can turn to and throw the ball to and yeah he's obviously going to be really looking forward to the game tomorrow.

Hopefully 1st close game of the champion trophy. So far none of the game was close . :kp

Steve Smith- Australia pre-match press conference, 21 Feb '25

[Reporter:]

Australia is the most successful team in ICC events. What is mindset behind this and what's the mindset behind the success in the global events?

[Steve Smith:]

Yeah, good question. I think the pressure of big tournaments gets the best out of us as a team - I think over the last ten or so years, we probably haven't performed as well as we would have liked in the Champions Trophy. We know that sometimes in those big tournaments in World Cups, for instance, it takes us a little while to get into our groove, which we've done in the last few, but we know with Champions Trophy it's a shorter format. You're only playing three round games, so you have to be switched on from the first one. So, our message to the group is essentially it's a quarter final to begin proceedings and hopefully that can bring the best out of our players.

[Reporter:]

Retirement, injuries, missing fast bowling - the 11th hour captaincy in the ICC Champions Trophy. Even we have pictures of Pat Cummins instead of you. So, as a captain, this all builds up pressure on you or on the other side you are feeling no pressure having a new team, no hopes, no targets - do you feel pressure in all these huddles or are you a pressure-less captain right now because you don't have anything to lose and you just have to perform.

[Steve Smith:]

I mean, I'm pretty relaxed. There's always pressure when you're playing in international events and big tournaments. So, yeah, look, I think it's clear we're obviously missing a few of our gun fast bowlers, but we're not worried about that. We're thinking about what we've got here and the opportunity that those guys have. There's some quality players in that room that are playing in almost their first big event I suppose, which they're looking forward to and I'm looking forward to as well - I think it's going to be great to see them placed under pressure against some quality opposition, and yeah, it's going to be an exciting time for us. Yeah looking forward to it

[Reporter:[

India - Pakistan is big rivalry and now Australia and England is also a big cricket rivalry so how do you take this on and how do you see the England cricket team, they announced their 11. Do you see the conditions will favour one spinner here?

[Steve Smith:]

Yeah, look, England are a great side. They've been a very good white ball team for a long period of time and we're looking forward to starting our campaign against them tomorrow. Hopefully it's a belter of a game. I actually haven't seen the surface yet. I wasn't here when we trained at this ground a few days back. I was a bit sick, so I actually haven't seen the surface and it was under covers just now. So, to your one spinner question, I'm unsure. I'll have a look when I get an opportunity and yeah we'll go from there.

[Reporter:]

England have named a team have you decided on your team yet?

[Steve Smith:]

We haven't yet, we're pretty clear where we're sort of heading but we'll name it at the toss tomorrow. I need to have a look at the surface when we get an opportunity as well. We're pretty clear where we want to go, but we'll name it tomorrow.

[Reporter:]

Does it feel a different dressing room without Pat and Josh and Mitch Starc? Does it feel different to you to be in there and not see them there with you?

[Steve Smith:]

I mean, it's a little bit different. I've played for ten years plus with those guys around so it's a little bit different but yeah, as I alluded to before I think it's great opportunity for some of these younger guys to showcase their skills in a world event. I'm looking forward to it. I think they've been placed under pressure in many different scenarios, whether it be T20 cricket or different T20 franchise things around the world. They've played in in high-pressure scenarios so yeah I'm looking forward to seeing how that stacks up, I suppose in a world event against some quality players too.

[Reporter:]

You are among the Fab Four including Virat, Williamson, and Joe Root, but our superstar Babar Azam is lacking runs in his last 50 ODI innings. Can you share some words or advice for Babar Azam?

[Steve Smith:]

Look, he's a quality player. He's had a really good career so far. He's got all the time in the world, the way he plays, he's got a solid technique, he's got a good head on his shoulders, so yeah, he maybe hasn't scored as many runs as he would have liked in the last little bit. We're all guilty of that at stages throughout our careers, don't worry, but yeah, look, he's a wonderful player.

[Reporter:]

With the Champions Trophy and the World Cup format being quite similar, I was just wondering, does being a reigning World Cup champion sort of impact the motivation for the Champions Trophy?

[Steve Smith:]

I think it's irrelevant really, it's another event. As I sort of alluded to before, you've got to be focused from that first game. I think in our last World Cup we were a bit slow to get started, we were really under the pump and then we brought our best cricket towards the back end of the tournament which I think is what you need in World Cups. Champions Trophies are a lot different. Obviously the eight best sides at the moment are here. You can't be slow to get started. You've got to get right into your work from the outset. So yeah, that's our message to the group and the guys are excited about getting started tomorrow night against England out here.

[Reporter:]

You guys have the upper hand on England if we talk about last ten ODIs between you guys. So, coming into this tournament, both of the teams have lost their respective series to India and Sri Lanka. Any specific plan for tomorrow so that you can start on a winning note?

[Steve Smith:]

Score one more run than the opposition. Simple as that, I think. Yeah, we both didn't play as well as we would have liked, I suppose, over the last couple of weeks. But, that doesn't mean a great deal coming into tomorrow. I think it's a fresh start. It's a new tournament. Yeah, two good teams going at it. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. It should be a good game

[Reporter:]

England Australia both our favourite teams for Pakistani spectators. So what strategy you will make tomorrow to charge and attract spectators towards you and your team?

[Steve Smith:]

Just hopefully put in a good performance. I think we'll be nice and positive, nice, and aggressive, both with bat and ball early on in the power play and try and get on top from that way, from that point of view. So, yeah, I'm not sure. Just go out and play a really nice brand of cricket, and yeah, hopefully we can get some good support out here tomorrow.

[Reporter:]

There have been a lot of questions about tomorrow’s match but I want to ask you specifically who will be the four semi-finalists in this Champions Trophy? Well, one is obviously Australia in your point of view…

[Steve Smith:]

I'm not going to answer that. I think we've got 8 really good teams that I think can win on any given day. So, I think that's what makes this tournament really good. You've got to turn up on every day and play a really good game of cricket. So, I'm not answering that question, but the best four teams will be there at the end.

[Reporter:]

England have named a Smith at number three; will you be batting three? You don't know your team perhaps, but will you be batting three?

[Steve Smith:]

Pretty good chance I reckon, yeah.

[Reporter:]

You have played your last match in the Gaddafi Stadium in 2022, you played a Test match here and now you are coming back to a new Gaddafi Stadium which is newly built. How has the experience been here in the new stadium under the lights - have you have trained here for the last two days?

[Steve Smith:]

No, it looks really good it's the first I've seen of it I said before I didn't come to the training session the other day I was a bit sick - but yeah here now and now it looks great. The new changing rooms look really good and the stands look beautiful. So no, hopefully we have a nice crowd out here tomorrow, a good atmosphere, and yeah, hopefully we can put on a good show for them.

[Reporter:]

We saw in the tri-nation series fast bowler getting good bounce in the first innings of the match. Can fast bowler be more effective than spinners?

[Steve Smith:]

I think both can play a real part. First to second innings could be a little bit different. We've seen, I heard the other night here when the boys trained there was a bit of dew around in the evening so the back end of the game could be challenging for the bowlers with a wet ball and skidding on so the day might spin a little bit more when it's a little bit drier so I think both have a part to play.

[Reporter:]

England have selected Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, I think all three will probably be expected to maybe have a role in this winter's Ashes. Does that have any bearing on you as batters going forward into the Ashes this winter? I know you obviously face them a lot, so I'm not going to say anything quite as glib as you might be able to land a blow on them, but does that have any bearing on you?

[Steve Smith:]

Not really. I've faced all those guys quite a bit, saw a lot of the guys in the change room. So now they're quality bowlers. They're a good attack. So now we're looking forward to coming up against them tomorrow.

[Reporter:]

You visited Pakistan before and now you're here for the Champions Trophy. Tell us about your experience about Pakistan, about culture, food, and people.

[Steve Smith:]

No, it's been wonderful so far. The hospitality's been great. People are lovely. The food's been great at our hotel. We haven't really had a chance to get out and do too much and it's pretty secure but we played a little bit of golf which has been nice as well, but yeah look it's a wonderful place to play I've actually never played a white ball game in Pakistan before so I'm excited by that experience and yeah it's been great so far and hopefully that continues.

Safe to say it's Eng vs Aus-B. (Aus are without Starc, Cummins & Marsh). To me, Eng start as favourites. However, Aus in ICC tournaments are a different beast altogether. So, can't predict anything for sure. LOL

That actually balances both teams. Otherwise a full strength Australian team would obliterate this English side
England side is only struggle on spinning pitches but they can destroy any team on flat pitches .

Don't take Them lightly :kp

Let’s go England!!

Changed my DP in support of the English team.

I wrote them off earlier but I think Australia still have a chance if they play this lineup

Head
Short
Smith
Labuschagne
Inglis
Carey
Maxwell
Hardie
Johnson/Dwarshuis
Ellis
Zampa

We all know what happens when we write Australia off. No one wants to play them in the semi or final for sure.

I expect Aussies to win it and also make it to semi (despite being severely depleted).

Aussies tend to be always good during ICC events.

Lmao! Up above you said:

“Aussie team is heavily depleted. We may see another one-sided game. :inti

So one sided game or not?

England will destroy this aussie team unless papa Travis does something.

This aussie team is a joke. However Steve smith did say Australia is at their best under pressure, but that usually doesn't hold true for t20 or ct events. Only for world cups, Ashes, BGT and Wtc lol.

I expect bloodbath. I know Australia will fight. But guys like Smith, Labu who are ancient for this format won't do jack against England. ENgland will be kicking themselves if they lose to THIS australian side.

I think batting should be okay. They have Smith, Labu, Short, Head, Maxwell, Carey. This is not a bad batting unit.

Bowling is heavily depleted. No Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood.

Anyway, opportunity for young pacers to step up and make a name for themselves.

Will be a good match but wounded England will win . I hope they leaned lesson from their poor show in India .

Second innings was quite difficult in first match.eng should bat first instead of their nonsensical approach. If Wood and Archer can take care of head with short stuff, it will be quite difficult for aus to set up a huge score or chase it.Aus have atrocious bowling to defend a huge score too.

England is also playing with Depleted side as Bairstow , sam curran and Jordan are not part of this team ::kp

I don't know why but my heart says England will smash every team in this champion trophy.

England is coming off a pretty bad time in ODIs and they have been losing and losing matches but Australia is also without their premier bowling line-up so you can never judge both teams.

England might edge out IMO

Aussies are looking weak , but they can still fight it out . Never underestimate them.

I expect Aussies to win this.

I don't know why but my heart says England will smash every team in this champion trophy.
I have been consistently maintaining this. Their only problem is strategy. Their team is a gun team. It is a crime not to win more matches with this team. Ofcourse spin is a glaring weakness. But on flat roads in Pakistan they should bulldoze every team

First three days of the Champions Trophy may have already given 3 of the 4 semi-finalists in New Zealand, India and South Africa.

Today, Australia vs England could give the 4th semifinals.

:kp

It's a skill issue

Archer will take his wicket in first 2 overs :kp

Maybe even Carse. But Australia chasing with expectation of dew.

This looks like the flattest pitch of the tournament. Rock hard with an even covering of grass

We might see huge scores today .

Toss Update:

Australia have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Australia
(Playing XI): Matthew Short, Travis Head, Steven Smith(c), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis(w), Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson

England (Playing XI): Philip Salt, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith(w), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(c), Liam Livingstone, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

I have zero hope from Australia but I will support them nonetheless.

It's supposed to be sold-out today. Should be a good crowd in. Flat pitch, lots of runs will be scored.

England will dominate today. Flat pitch and a weakened Australia means eng will win.

Only hope is Travis head going God mode but he only does that against india. Has only done it once vs England.

WOW!

Crazy catch from Carey there.

A competitor for that catch from Phillips.

Not necessarily. England themselves are a junk side.

Salt is my captain and he is gone. First I wanted head to be captain but. ..:dw

What a catch? Aus fielding in icc tournaments 🐐

Aus in odi bi laterals 🤡

Pak DJs:

South Africa: Waka Waka
Afghanistan: any famous Pashto song
England Elton John

Australia: Men at Work?

Both teams have been pretty bad lately

On these types of flat wickets you need these superhuman fielding efforts to make the difference

Lovely weather and beautiful atmosphere at the newly renovated Gaddafi stadium
