Chelsea FC | 2022/23 Season

How's this for squad strength.

View attachment 118516

Thats a very strong squad depth, with all the crazy signings and huge money spending they have made, Chelsea should actually be having the best squad in the world imo, but for me it isn't. The attack isn't 'best of the world' good. Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling and possibly Mudryk are the game changers, Havertz is average, they don't even play Ziyech, Sterling hasn't been at his best this season (but he can be great), Pulisic barely does anything. Aubameyang, although had a great campaign with Barca, But I think he's past his best.

The midfield and defense is great, but it is worthnote that Koulibaly, Azpilicueta, Kante and Thiago Silva are soon going to be past their past prime. But they have Reece James, probably the best fullback at the moment.

The other question is how the team will be managed, as there can easily be a problem of multiple players being unhappy with less playing time.

Chelsea have identified Napoli and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen, 24, as their top forward target for this summer's transfer window. (90min)

Chelsea's Thiago Silva has signed a one-year contract extension which will keep him at the club until summer 2024.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter, speaking to BT Sport: "We have had a positive week. You benefit from time together but there are some young players who need to connect on the Premier League stage. We are excited for the team."

On Ruben Loftus-Cheek's return: "He provides a bit of balance. He has been building his fitness up."

On West Ham: "It goes to show the Premier League is unforgiving. If you have a few tough moments you can suffer. Whenever you play here, it is a tough game. We have to bring the best of ourselves to the game."

Big news from the Chelsea dressing room.

England Under-21 forward Noni Madueke, 20, makes his first start since joining from from PSV Eindhoven last month.

There are three changes in total from the side that was held 0-0 by Fulham on 3 February.

Joao Felix returns from suspension so for the first time Chelsea start with Felix and big money January signings Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk all together.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek also makes his first start since 12 November after recovering from injury.

The three players making way are Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount and Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea XI: Arrizabalaga, James, Thiago Silva, Badiashile, Cucurella, Loftus-Cheek, Fernandez, Madueke, Joao Felix, Mudryk, Havertz.

Substitutes: Bettinelli, Chalobah, Mount, Chilwell, Ziyech, Gallagher, David Datro Fofana, Azpilicueta, Chukwuemeka.

Chelsea continue to stutter under Potter

Chelsea, who have already been eliminated from both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, resume their Champions League campaign against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday on the back of a poor run of form.

They have taken just seven points out of the last 21 on offer and are well adrift in the race to finish in the top four, despite their heavy spending over the past two transfer windows.

In addition, they are without an away win in the league since October, a run of seven matches which included losses at Potter's former club Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Fulham.

Chelsea had seven players under the age of 24 in their starting line-up at West Ham, including Madueke, Felix, Mudryk and Havertz.

There were encouraging signs as the young forward line caused problems in the first half but Chelsea were disappointing in the second half and have now scored just 23 goals in 22 league games.

They continue to stutter under Potter, who has won just five of his 16 top-flight matches since taking charge in September.

Atletico Madrid could be willing to sell Portugal forward Joao Felix, 23, to Chelsea for 100m euros (£88.3m) in the summer. The La Liga club had been asking for between 130m-140m euros (£115m-£124m). (Relevo)

Blues draw yet another blank

Having had their deficiencies in front of goal laid bare in Wednesday's 1-0 Champions League defeat at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea will again be wondering how they failed to find the net against a side who had managed just one clean sheet in the Premier League all season before Saturday.

Potter handed January signing David Fofana his full debut in an attempt to inject some imagination into the Blues' faltering front line, but the 20-year-old Ivorian failed to make an impact before being hooked at half-time.

Indeed, the home side struggled to carve out any meaningful opportunities until midway through the second half, and when they did they were thwarted by some sensational last-ditch defending from the visitors.

Sterling in particular will be scratching his head in disbelief, as Maitland-Niles, Perraud and Romeo Lavia all denied the former Liverpool and Manchester City man from point-blank range.

Late on, Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was also equal to Conor Gallagher's effort as the Blues' push for an equaliser proved in vain.

The serious-looking injury to Azpilicueta compounded a miserable afternoon for Potter, who was booed by home supporters after the full-time whistle.

Before kick-off, fans had given a minute's applause in memory of former Chelsea winger Christian Atsu, who was found dead almost two weeks on from the earthquake in Turkey.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer says he is at a loss to explain what Graham Potter's Chelsea are trying to do in attack after a 1-0 loss to Southampton.

Graham Potter still has the support of Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and the club's board despite their poor run of form.

The Blues have won just two of their past 14 games in all competitions and were beaten 1-0 by Premier League strugglers Southampton on Saturday.

Potter was appointed in September following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

However, Chelsea's owners have made it clear that hiring Potter was part of a long-term project.

It is felt the team needs an opportunity to gel after a rebuild that has seen £583m spent on new players in the past two transfer windows, with eight new signings arriving in January alone.

It is also recognised the unprecedented injury crisis has also contributed to difficult circumstances for Potter.

A head injury to Cesar Azpilicueta in Saturday's match adds another name to Chelsea's lengthy injury list, which includes Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic, Wesley Fofana, Edouard Mendy, Denis Zakaria and Armando Broja.

Potter's future at Stamford Bridge will not be determined by success in the Champions League this season or the team's ability to qualify for European football next season.

Although it is accepted Saturday's result was not good enough - Southampton are bottom of the Premier League table - it is felt there are encouraging signs at the club.

Potter left Brighton and signed a five-year deal with Chelsea following Tuchel's sacking.

Chelsea have won nine of their 25 games under Potter and sit 10th in the Premier League, 10 points off the Champions League places.

The Blues are next in action on Sunday at fourth-placed Tottenham (13:30 GMT).

Silva will miss next week's Champions League last-16 second leg against Dortmund, which Chelsea trail 1-0.

Frank condemns abuse of Chelsea boss Potter and backs him to succeed
The Champions League is the Blues' last chance of silverware this season.

He will also be absent as Graham Potter's struggling side look to improve their dismal league form, including Saturday's home Premier League game against Leeds United (15:00 GMT).

Chelsea are 14 points from the top four and have only won twice in their past 15 games in all competitions.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank says the abuse aimed at football managers is "a disgrace" amid Graham Potter's plight at Chelsea.

Potter said his mental health had suffered after he and his family received anonymous abuse during his side's poor run of form.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told Chelsea counterpart Graham Potter to not let the pressure surrounding his position "destroy his life".

Potter, 47, has won just nine of his 26 games in charge of Chelsea since he succeeded Thomas Tuchel in September.

He said last week that his mental health has suffered after he and his family had received anonymous abuse.

"We all know the pressure, the demands and the uncertainty that this industry has," said Arteta.

"You can have difficulties in your job and challenges, which we do, especially when you lose, but when you are winning as well because this job is so demanding," the Arsenal boss added.

"But you cannot destroy your life because of that."

Brentford boss Thomas Frank said on Monday that the abuse aimed at football managers is "a disgrace" and backed Potter to succeed at Chelsea.

Arsenal lead the Premier League but Arteta faced similar pressure following a poor start to last season's campaign.

Former Brighton manager Potter referred to Arteta prior to Sunday's defeat by Tottenham, saying: "Two years into Mikel's reign he's close to getting the sack and people are wanting him out and it's a disaster. Now things have changed a little bit - and that's just the way it is."

Arteta said: "Your family, your friends, your loved ones, the people around you, don't deserve to have their lives affected in such a negative way because you don't win a football match."

He added: "So that balance I think in my case was critical, but you need some help, someone to paint that picture in front of you because sometimes when you are in that position it is not easy to see."

Chelsea are 10th in the Premier League, 26 points worse off than Arsenal and 14 points adrift of the Champions League positions.

Under Potter, who signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge, the Blues have won only once in their past nine league games.

They host Leeds United on Saturday, before a crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Borussia Dortmund, whom they trail 1-0.

Saturday's game felt like the start of a crucial few days for Potter with the visit of Leeds followed by a Champions League last-16 home tie on Tuesday against Borussia Dortmund, who won the first leg 1-0.

Defeat in both games and it would have been hard to see how Potter would be able to survive as the pressure on his position increased.

But against a Leeds side fighting for survival and coming off the back of a morale-boosting win against Southampton in their previous league game, Chelsea on the whole put in the performance Potter and the club's fans would have wanted.

There were big chances missed again and a nervy finish but Chelsea's fifth goal of the year proved decisive.

If the Blues can follow this up by progressing in the Champions League, then this could prove to be the turning point Potter needs.

Are Chelsea saving their season?

Chelsea have now despatched Leeds, Dortmund and Leicester in the space of eight days - having failed to win in the previous six games spread over five weeks.

This ended their worst run without an away win since 2000-01, having failed to win in their last 10 games on the road since October.

Graham Potter will be hoping this is the turning point after a difficult start in his first role at one of Europe's biggest teams. They are still only 10th but now sit just two points off a potential European place.

They led from their first major chance when Chilwell met Kalidou Koulibaly's cross to smash home, a goal he celebrated against his former employers.

It could have been even better with Felix clipping a shot past Danny Ward which hit the post, then finding the net from Ruben Loftus-Cheek's cross. With everyone back at the centre circle ready to restart, it was ruled out by the VAR because Felix was offside.

Havertz did put them back into the lead with a clever finish from Fernandez's ball.

The £89m Ukraine forward Mudryk sped away from Leicester's defence to slot in but he was ruled outside. Not long after he had his first assist in English football as Havertz crossed from the right and Mudryk headed down for Kovacic to lash in.

The goal was checked by the VAR for a potential Havertz offside but the goal was given.

"We can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have a fantastic game on Tuesday [home to Liverpool] to put it right."

Chelsea have sacked manager Graham Potter after less than seven months in charge following Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa.

It was the Englishman's 11th defeat in 31 games since replacing Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge on 8 September.

Chelsea, who have spent more than £550m on new players, are searching for their third manager of the season.

The Blues are in the bottom half of the Premier League after their latest loss - and 12 points off the top four.

Chelsea say Potter "has agreed to collaborate with the club to facilitate a smooth transition" and that Bruno Saltor will take charge of the team as interim head coach.

In a statement, co-controlling owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said: "We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person.

"He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome."

Chelsea host Liverpool in the Premier League on Tuesday and face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on 12 April.

Terrible decision to begin with. Potter is a project manager, not a Galacticos one. He should never have been at a club like Chelsea, he's not the guy you throw 600m at and expect an instant CL win.

Frank Lampard: Chelsea set to name ex-manager as boss until end of the season

Frank Lampard is set to be appointed interim Chelsea manager until the end of the season - just over two years after the club sacked him.

He has been out of a job since January when he was dismissed by Everton after less than a year in charge.

The ex-Chelsea and England midfielder previously managed the Blues from July 2019 until January 2021, when he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel's successor, Graham Potter, was sacked on Sunday.

Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League and drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Tuesday under Bruno Saltor - with 44-year-old Lampard in attendance at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are 14 points outside the top four, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season.

They travel to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday and face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on 12 April.

In his previous managerial spell at the club, Lampard guided Chelsea to the FA Cup final in his first season in charge, having joined from Derby County.

Lampard - the club's record goalscorer - led them to 44 wins from 84 matches, but picked up five defeats in his last eight league games, as many as in the previous 23.

After being sacked by Chelsea, he was named Everton boss in January 2022 but was sacked eight days shy of his one-year anniversary in the role after nine defeats in 12 Premier League games.

Frank Lampard has been appointed Chelsea manager until the end of the season - just over two years after he was sacked by the club.

The 44-year-old, the club's record goalscorer, takes over following Graham Potter's dismissal on Sunday.

Lampard, who has been out of a job since he was dismissed by Everton in January, previously managed the Blues from July 2019 until January 2021.

Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League and are away to Wolves on Saturday.

They are 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season, but are through to the Champions League quarter-finals and face Real Madrid in the first leg on Wednesday.

'Lampard's return most surprising Chelsea development yet'
Co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali said former midfielder Lampard will take charge while they continue an "exhaustive process" to find a permanent manager.

"We want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season," a statement said.

"We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line."

In his previous managerial spell at Chelsea, Lampard took over with the club under a transfer embargo but guided them to a fourth-place finish and the FA Cup final in his first season in charge.

After spending £200m the following summer on seven major signings, including current players Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz, he could not replicate the early promise and was sacked by previous owner Roman Abramovich with the club ninth in the Premier League, having won only two of their previous eight games.

He was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who led Chelsea to victory in the Champions League final four months later.

After being sacked by Chelsea, Lampard was named Everton boss in January 2022.

He guided them to safety from relegation last season but was removed eight days shy of his one-year anniversary in the role after nine defeats in 12 Premier League games this campaign.

Lampard was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday for Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Liverpool, when Bruno Saltor was in charge.

Lampard!

Sometimes you wonder what goes through the minds of some of these owners.

I know it's until the end of the season, but the guy was sacked from the same club not that long ago.

Chelsea have contacted former manager and current Roma boss Jose Mourinho about returning for a third spell in charge at Stamford Bridge. (Relevo)

I would love Jose back in the premier league.

Yep, he's one of the greatest football personalities ever. But from a footballing POV, I can't see how this would make sense for Chelsea. He looks past it now. His past few stints in the PL have been underwhelming, and he's not pulling up any trees at Roma. I don't think he's a serious contender.

At Chelsea with Tod Boley, he will have unlimited funds.

He was underwhelming at Tottenham, but what manager does well at Tottenham and win trophies?

He is doing as well as he can with Roma. They don't have a team that is good enough to challenge for the title.

Don't think Jose's style of play can succeed in the Premier League (if the objective is to win the league) any longer, it was fine when there were less competitive teams but that's changed

Jose would settle for a point against the 3 or 4 big teams and then batter everyone else, you no longer have that luxury as those 3 or 4 teams are 7 or 8 now

Chelsea and Mourinho are iconic. Chelsea are hollow without him

Either complete chaos or an EPL win - nothing in between.

He’s not the great tactician he once was

But he is one of the few who I would trust with an open cheque book like Chelsea have at the moment

But he is one of the few who I would trust with an open cheque book like Chelsea have at the moment

I think the chequebook will be closed now, surely they can't continue to spend at the rate they have done

FFP has to catch up with them, if not then it's quite dangerous cos then that means the PL/UEFA are allowing us an open chequebook and that would be dangerous

Frank Lampard admitted ‘things need to improve’ at Chelsea after kicking off his second stint as manager with a 1-0 defeat to Wolves.

It wasn’t the fairytale return Chelsea, Blues fans and Lampard himself would have dreamed of, as the west London side’s struggles in front of goal continued.

Matheus Nunes’ screamer in the first-half edged the contest in Wolves’ favour as Chelsea fell flat once again, against a team battling relegation.

Lampard is the Blues’ third manager this season, and it appears clear the person in the dugout is not the issue.

An 11th defeat of the season will see Lampard’s side remain in the bottom half of the Premier League, and the 44-year-old says things need to change and quickly if they’re going to improve.

Lampard said: “I thought the performance in the first half was 70 per cent or so. It was enough for it to be an even game and there was a rocket from them out of nowhere.

“In the second half there was more energy, more chances and we got more people in the box. Maybe it was that feeling we could score. We have been working here for one or two days and it’s about getting an understanding of that and the mindset of the team.

“There has been a lot of change and that’s not an excuse but things need to improve and I think that performance summed it up. I have to get an understanding of it. When I say mindset, it’s not necessarily a negative.

“You have to get used to winning and make it a habit. Credit to Wolves today, they were physical and stuck in for a win.”

Lampard added that there is a ‘feeling you won’t score’ around the club at the moment, and called on club chiefs to ‘address’ their struggles up front having gone another game without finding the net.

“We will work and recreate,” the caretaker boss said. “We will get into those positions and repeat it. Maybe there’s a feeling you won’t score.

“I’ve been there before and as a club we need to address it.

“It’s not where the club wants to be but it’s the reality and we have to work through it.

“You have to get to a point where you can move forward. We need to lift it more than we did today.”

Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea: Frank Lampard says Blues can produce 'special' night in second leg

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea can produce a "special" night and overturn a 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid in order to advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

His players, however, will have to do something they have not done in four games if they are to progress against the holders - score a goal.

Chelsea suffered a second successive defeat under interim boss Lampard after finishing with 10 men following Ben Chilwell's straight red card for a foul on Rodrygo in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

It means the Blues must score at least twice at Stamford Bridge in next Tuesday's return leg.

"Special things can happen at Stamford Bridge," said Lampard, who has now suffered 13 defeats in his last 16 matches as manager in all competitions across spells with Everton and Chelsea this season.

"We have to believe."

Chelsea: Frank Lampard says Blues got basics wrong in Brighton defeat

Interim manager Frank Lampard says Chelsea got the basics wrong and need to work harder after their 2-1 home Premier League defeat by Brighton.

They have lost three games in all competitions since former boss Lampard was reappointed this month.

Chelsea are 11th in the table, which would be their worst finish since 1995-96.

"We have to address it very quickly, me and the players, because that's not a Chelsea performance," Lampard said.

Chelsea face Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, having lost 2-0 at the Bernabeu last week.

"I've been at the club nine days. I don't like what I saw today," said Lampard, who will be in charge until the summer.

"I'm not going to try to dress that up in any way. There should be a feeling when you play for Chelsea where you're proud.

"To get there, there needs to be a new energy. That needs to come back.

"At the moment we're not in the perfect place. In football you can change the story very quickly.

"We'll have to have a big desire to do that (against Real) and it will be a different game. We have to energise the crowd."

Lampard is Chelsea's all-time top goalscorer with 211 goals and returned to manage the club from 2019 to 2021 - before being sacked and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

In the past year Todd Boehly has replaced Russian Roman Abramovich as owner, spent more than £400m on new players and fired Tuchel and his replacement Graham Potter.

"It's not about the club I played for. It's a different era; times change," said Lampard.

"Even after the time I was manager, other managers have been here and seen success. It's Chelsea Football Club; it's bigger than all of us.

"We're not where we want to be. To put a timeline on that is not possible, but we have to work like we want to be there tomorrow. If you work like that you'll get there as quick as you can."

On their first home defeat by Brighton, Lampard said: "The scoreline doesn't flatter them; they could have scored more goals.

"Brighton are a very good team - they have been working together for a long time. The ideas, fitness, energy and the connection within the team is so good and that's why they are where they are and we're not that.

"To get to that will take time, but the first things on the ladder are the basics that we got wrong and were short on today. And that can't be right for us.

"Confidence can do that to you. We've all been there. There is only one way out of that and that's to work."

Frank Lampard presser:

First, he is asked about whether Chelsea are 'broken' and where winning the tie would compare to the run to the Champions League 11 years ago: "We are not where we want to be. I think the word broken is a bit much. The league position is reality, and we are 2-0 down in this game. We have to work against that; I don't think anything that happens tomorrow will be better than when we won the Champions League [in 2012].

We had many difficukt moments on that run. Barcelona, Napoli... it was a huge run. Considering the moment we are in and the team we are facing here, of course it would be special."

Julian Nagelsmann: Chelsea hold talks with former Bayern Munich manager

Chelsea have held talks with Julian Nagelsmann as part of their search for a new manager.

The German was sacked by Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in March after less than two years in charge.

BBC Sport understands Chelsea do not yet have a preferred option to replace Graham Potter, who was sacked in April.

Despite holding talks with Nagelsmann, 35, the process to find a new manager is ongoing - with Luis Enrique also reportedly of interest to Chelsea.

Potter left Stamford Bridge less than seven months after leaving Brighton & Hove Albion to replace Thomas Tuchel.

Nagelsmann, one of the highest-rated young coaches in the game, has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

He worked with Chelsea sporting director Laurence Stewart and technical director Christopher Vivell while he was in charge at RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann is regarded as one of the game's brightest managerial talents, having taking charge of Hoffenheim aged just 28 before moving to RB Lepizig, whom he led to the Champions League semi-finals.

He then joined Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in 2021, winning the league title in his first season alongside two German Supercups.

Bayern, who appointed Tuchel after sacking Nagelsmann, have made an approach for Chelsea first-team coach Anthony Barry and negotiations continue between the clubs.

Chelsea 0-2 Real Madrid: Frank Lampard says he 'won't let players off the hook' after European exit

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard says he "won't let anyone off the hook" after Real Madrid knocked them out of the Champions League to inflict another big blow in their flagging season.

Two Rodrygo goals at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday sealed a 4-0 aggregate win for Real in the quarter-final tie.

It meant the Blues have now lost all four games under Lampard since he was appointed as interim boss this month.

"Every game you play you have to give everything," he told BT Sport.

The 44-year-old Lampard, Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer and former manager, added: "I've been here now for only two weeks so I'm hungry.

"I won't let anyone off the hook in terms of seeing this season out. It has to be the opposite."

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva says the club need to "stop and put a strategy in place" or risk another difficult campaign next season.

Despite lavish transfer spending under new owner Todd Boehly, Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League and will end this season without a trophy after defeat by Real Madrid in the Champions League.

"The manager can only pick 11 from 30-something. That's tough," said Silva.

"There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play."

American investor Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital completed a £4.25bn takeover of Chelsea in May 2022.

They spent about £550m across the summer and winter transfer windows to amass a first-team squad of 30 players, but that has failed to translate into success on the pitch.

Chelsea have sacked managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter this season, while interim boss Frank Lampard has lost all four matches since taking over for a second spell this month.

It means they are unlikely to qualify for Europe for only the second time in 25 seasons.

"It's a difficult moment for the club, with a lot of indecision," added 38-year-old Silva.

"We had to increase the size of the changing rooms because it didn't fit the size of the team.

"A positive point is that there are amazing players within the squad, but on the other hand there is always players that are going to be unhappy.

"We need to stop and put a strategy in place, otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes."

I don't recognise my club - Drogba

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba says he does not "recognise the club" compared with when he played at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba won 12 major honours between 2004 and 2012 under previous owner Roman Abramovich, whose generous backing turned the Blues into serial trophy winners following his takeover in 2003.

The 56-year-old was forced to sell the club last year after he was sanctioned by the UK government over alleged links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

"It is not the same club any more," Drogba, 45, told Canal+. "I don't recognise my club. There is a new owner and a new vision.

"We try to compare with what was done under the Abramovich era, where there were many acquisitions of players, but the choices were very intelligent.

"Bringing in players like Petr Cech, Andriy Shevchenko, Hernan Crespo, Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda, and I go on. It was to win titles and they are players who already have some experience. Here the strategy is different, they bet on young players.

"I think they certainly lack charismatic players and leaders. It needs players who take responsibility."

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "Under Abramovich, 90% of the players coming in needed to perform straight away. And if you don't, you are out.

"Now there is a group of players who arrived in January, except perhaps Enzo [Fernandez] and Joao Felix, that look like they are more for the future.

"The future is what, next year? Two years? Chelsea fans are not used to waiting."

Speaking before Tuesday's match against Real, Frank Lampard dismissed suggestions the club is "broken", though he admitted they are "not where we want to be".

Speaking after the game the former midfielder added: "There are probably reasons for the transition. We can't be too short-term with it.

"People will make a lot out of this season for Chelsea because we've had so much success. The reality is that this club is going to be back."

Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea hold talks with former Tottenham boss as they continue manager search

Chelsea have held initial talks with Mauricio Pochettino over the manager position at Stamford Bridge.

It is understood the former Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham coach is one of five candidates at this stage of the process.

Chelsea have been admirers of Pochettino in the past and enquired about his availability when Thomas Tuchel left the club in September.

Sky Sports News has been told Pochettino will assess his options in the summer as he prepares for the right opportunity. The 51-year-old has been out of work since parting company with PSG in July 2022.

Pochettino has been approached by Real Madrid twice before and has also turned down several offers in recent months from clubs in various European leagues.

Chelsea: Vincent Kompany and Mauricio Pochettino on Chelsea shortlist

Vincent Kompany is one of the managers on Chelsea's shortlist for their new permanent head coach.

Burnley manager Kompany, Mauricio Pochettino and one other unnamed manager are being considered by the Premier League club.

However, ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Naglesmann is no longer in the running to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are leading the recruitment process.

The Blues sacked manager Graham Potter at the start of April after less than seven months in charge, following a 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa that left the club 11th in the Premier League table.

Ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was then named interim manager until the end of the season.

Former Manchester City captain Kompany has this season led Burnley to promotion from the Championship in his first year in charge at Turf Moor.

The 37-year-old Belgian has transformed the team's style resulting in attractive, attacking football which has been praised by supporters and those within the game.

It would be a significant jump for Kompany, who has only managed Anderlecht (2019-2022) before his appointment at Burnley.

Kompany's impressive season has also led to him being linked with the vacant Tottenham job.

BBC Sport has approached Burnley for comment.

BREAKING: Mauricio Pochettino is now the front-runner for the Chelsea job as per Talksports

Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea in talks with ex-Tottenham boss to become new manager

Chelsea are in advanced talks to make former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino their new manager.

The Argentine, whose most recent job was at Paris St-Germain, is keen on the role but more negotiations will take place before any deal is finalised.

Chelsea want a quick resolution and believe they are at the end of the process as they search for a permanent replacement for Graham Potter.

Pochettino, 51, would take over from interim manager Frank Lampard.

The former England midfielder took charge of the Blues after they sacked Potter at the start of April, but has lost all four of his games in charge.

It is not yet known whether Pochettino, who has been out of work since PSG sacked him in July 2022, will take over immediately or whether Lampard will stay on as planned until the end of the season.

The Argentine said no to an initial approach from Chelsea, but now the club are happy to hand him more control as he looks for a job that allows him to have input and impact beyond selecting the first team.

Chelsea held talks with former Bayern Munich boss Julian Naglesmann before he fell out of the running.

Former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique had been among the contenders, and Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, who has guided the Turf Moor side to promotion to the Premier League this season, was also on the shortlist.

Pochettino managed Spurs for five years from 2014 and led them to the 2019 Champions League final, which they lost to Liverpool.

He was sacked in November 2019 after they made a disappointing start to the following campaign - they were 14th in the Premier League at the time of his departure.

Pochettino also guided Spurs to the League Cup final in 2015 and second in the Premier League in 2016-17, with Chelsea winning both competitions.

He was also the Tottenham manager during an infamous game against Chelsea in May 2016 in which his side picked up nine yellow cards, and the hosts three.

Spurs took a 2-0 lead at Stamford Bridge, but were held to a 2-2 draw - a result that ended their title hopes and confirmed Leicester City as Premier League champions.

Pochettino had been linked with a return to Tottenham after Antonio Conte left in March, but instead looks set to join their London rivals.

Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard says Reece James will miss the rest of the season and Mason Mount is "unlikely" to feature in the final seven games.

James has been ruled out after a scan on a hamstring problem, while Mount has a pelvic injury.

"Reece James will be unavailable for the rest of the season, Mason Mount the same," said Lampard.

Chelsea are in advanced talks with former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino to take charge.

"Reece had a hamstring injury in the midweek game," added Lampard. "He got through it but then had a scan and he's out.

"Mason has been carrying a pelvic injury for a while. It predates myself and he has been trying typically but he will have minor surgery, then a four-week recovery.

"He [Mount] might make the last match but that's unlikely, which is obviously disappointing for us."

Pochettino isn't the one for Chelsea. He doesn't come in and win the CL in the same season like Tuchel, which is the Chelsea DNA.

Should have gone for Enrique.

Poch is a really good manager but will Chelsea fans give him time? I doubt it, as he is a former Spurs manager. He better get off to a flying start or fans will turn on him very quickly.

Chelsea are ready to consider a shock move for Liverpool legend Sadio Mane after his Bayern Munich transfer turned sour, sources have told Football Insider.

The west Londoners are in the market for a new forward this summer but are hamstrung by financial fair play regulations and the lack of top-class and potentially available number nines in world football.

Chelsea have been heavily criticised for spending nearly £600million on new signings since the Todd Boehly-led takeover last summer.

Mauricio Pochettino: Chelsea edging closer to appointing former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager

Mauricio Pochettino's appointment as Chelsea manager is edging closer and he could be formally announced in the next week.

During negotiations, Chelsea's squad size and recruitment have been discussed as well as the make-up of Pochettino's backroom staff.

Talks have progressed positively in the last few days between both parties but no formal deal has been signed yet.

Interim boss Frank Lampard is expected to be in charge for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea have been admirers of Pochettino in the past and enquired about his availability when Thomas Tuchel left in September.

The 51-year-old, who has been out of work since parting company with Paris Saint-Germain in July 2022, has been approached by Real Madrid twice before and has also turned down several offers in recent months from clubs in various European leagues.

Chelsea's search for a new manager had been reduced to three names, with Pochettino joined on the shortlist by Burnley boss Vincent Kompany and an unnamed third coach.

Former Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann was ruled out of the running after holding talks with the club.

The 35-year-old, who was sacked by Bayern last month, was never regarded as the favourite for the job internally.

Friction between the two sides grew as Chelsea officials were determined to carry out thorough due diligence on all of the candidates before making a decision - with the German coach resenting the repeated interviews and requests for information.

Nagelsmann had reservations over the role himself and sensed Chelsea's varied shortlist reflected a lack of clarity about the direction they want to take.

Lampard was clueless as a manager before - nothing has changed. In fact he's probably even worse now.

So much money wasted on players who simply cannot be bothered.

Chelsea need a huge clearout of the squad, get rid of the dead wood and bring in a manager who can sort out the mess at the club.

Arsenal fans took out their angst at Mykhailo’s Mudryk decision to snub a January move to their club by shining a laser in the Chelsea winger’s face.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Lasers being shined on Mykhailo Mudryk’s face at the Emirates <a href="https://t.co/CxoUZ4kzAO">pic.twitter.com/CxoUZ4kzAO</a></p>— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) <a href="https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1653503230486237192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 2, 2023</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The Ukraine international appeared destined to sign for the Gunners earlier this year, only for Chelsea hijack his move and bring him to west London instead.

Mudryk has made a disappointing start to his Stamford Bridge career and shown only fleeting glimpses of the ability that persuaded Chelsea to pay nearly £90million for his services.

The 22-year-old started on the bench again on Tuesday evening and entered the fray with his side in a pretty hapless situation, trailing 3-1 after a wretched first 45 minutes.

Noni Madueke had hauled his side back into the contest and Mudryk looked the player most likely to spark a real comeback with a couple of exciting bursts.

Thankfully, Mudryk showed no ill-effects after the Sky Sports cameras picked up on Arsenal fans shining a laser pen in the winger’s face on two separate occasions.

How different it could have been for Mudryk had he signed for an Arsenal team that still harbours remote hopes of pipping Manchester City to the title, according to Martin Odegaard who scored twice in the opening 31 minutes to underline the gap between the two London rivals.

‘Especially the first half was brilliant,’ said the Arsenal captain. ‘We came out and showed a different spirit to last time [the 4-1 loss to Manchester City].

‘I’m very happy with the first half, the second was a bit messy but three points and a good win and we needed this one.

Can Chelsea still be relegated from the Premier League this season?

‘Everyone was so hurt after the game [against City]. We used the anger and the disappointment to get back into this game. You can lose games but the way we lost, we didn’t play our game and weren’t ourselves, that was the most painful thing, and we wanted to show a different side and we definitely did.

‘I just try to help the team. This year I’ve scored more goals, Granit with two good passes and that made it easier. I just tried to be in the right area and as soon as I see him attacking the space I just have to be in the right place.

‘In the second half we didn’t keep the ball enough. They went a bit more direct and after the duels we didn’t keep the ball. We have to fight and keep going. We believe and will fight until the end.’

Arsenal have condemned the "dangerous and totally unacceptable behaviour" of a 21-year-old man who has been arrested for shining a laser in the face of Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk.

The Met Police confirmed the man is in police custody after being arrested during the Gunners' 3-1 win at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

A green light was visible on Ukraine international Mudryk's face after he came on as a 71st-minute substitute.

He later said on Instagram: "It's ok."

Arsenal said: "This behaviour is dangerous and totally unacceptable, and we will fully support the police with their enquiries.

"We will obviously take the strongest possible action."

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January in a deal worth up to £89m, but has yet to score for the club in 14 appearances.

Chelsea must find right blend

Chelsea's season has had little riding on it for more than a month now, since the awful run of results during the end of Graham Potter's reign and the beginning of Lampard's caretaker tenure.

A mid-table position for a squad that has had multi-million pound investment in the past two transfer windows is massive under-achievement by any measure.

The draw against Forest was symptomatic of a chaotic season characterised by disjointed performances from a collection of highly priced players yet to be moulded into a winning blend.

But while few of the £550m worth of signings made under the Todd Boehly regime have been an unqualified success, the Blues have unquestionably acquired a squad of serious talent with significant potential.

In a first season to forget under new ownership, the Blues have given starts to 31 players in the top flight, the most of any club, and have made a league-high 128 changes to their starting line-up.

Further recruits might therefore seem like unwise excess, but despite their outlay, the squad still has patent weaknesses.

A true defensive midfielder to partner Argentina conductor Enzo Fernandez would give much-needed balance while a goalkeeper who imbues the defence with confidence rather than uncertainty would increase stability at the back that was missing whenever Forest crossed the ball.

The need for a goalscorer - Chelsea have scored only 36 times in the league this season - to add end product to their array of creative forwards was again demonstrated against Forest by misses by Sterling and Joao Felix.

The return of Romelu Lukaku from his loan season at Inter Milan may save Chelsea's new manager another newcomer to integrate.

The identity of that new boss has yet to be confirmed, although former Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been heavily linked with the position.

What is clear is that the appointment must have the charisma and nous to manage such a large number of superstar players and strike the right alchemy between them.

Big news

Chelsea have agreed a deal for Mauricio Pochettino to become manager next season.

More details:

==

Chelsea have agreed terms to make former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino their new manager.

He will join the club in the summer, with Frank Lampard remaining as interim manager until the end of the season.

Pochettino, who has also managed Southampton, has been out of work since Paris St-Germain replaced him with Christophe Galtier in summer 2022.

The 51-year-old Argentine managed Spurs for five years from 2014 and led them to the 2019 Champions League final.

Pochettino will be Chelsea's sixth permanent manager in five years, following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter earlier this season.

Lampard took interim charge of the Blues at the start of April following Potter's dismissal.

Chelsea have had a difficult season, losing to Manchester City in the third round of both the FA Cup and League Cup.

They also lost to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, which ended any viable hopes of them qualifying for Europe next season.

They are currently 11th in the Premier League, having won just one of their past 11 games, losing eight of them.

Pochettino had been linked with a return to Tottenham after they parted company with Antonio Conte in March.

He guided Spurs to the League Cup final in 2015 and a Premier League runners-up spot in 2016-17, with his side missing out on winning both to Chelsea.

Following his stint at Tottenham, Pochettino took over from Tuchel at PSG in January 2021.

The French club finished second in Ligue 1 at the end of the 2021-22 campaign but did win the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions, which were the first trophies of Pochettino's managerial career.

Pochettino started his managerial career with Espanyol before his 16-month spell at Southampton.

In April, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague told BBC's Football Focus that the Argentine was approached in September as a possible replacement for Tuchel, but turned the club down before they appointed Potter.

"It was a different time where I think Chelsea had made up their mind on Potter, and Pochettino sensed that," said Balague.

"Now it feels like the club is ready for him. Before, the fans were missing Tuchel, who won them the Champions League the year before.

"But the fans and the club are wanting him to arrive."

Balague believes Pochettino wants to produce a team Chelsea fans can "fall in love with".

"He wants a team that presses, that is aggressive - he wants players that know they have to fight to get into the starting XI," Balague added.

"He is obviously going to have to trim the squad and those players that stay will have to fight for their place and know that nothing is guaranteed."

Chelsea must be ready for reset

Chelsea may have had some decent chances here and only lost by a single goal to the newly crowned champions, but they carry all the appearance of a team and club that cannot wait for an abject and miserable season to end.

Frank Lampard is seeing out time on the touchline before making his second departure as manager, while Chelsea's players await the arrival of incoming Mauricio Pochettino to discover what the future has in store.

There is talent within this squad but they, and Chelsea as a club, have lacked direction under the new co-ownership of Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali and now it is time to start getting the big decisions right.

Pochettino will enter Stamford Bridge with the bar set low but there are materials to work with, providing he is allowed to do it his way, while his intense attacking style could fashion this into a quality team given time.

For now, however, Chelsea must complete the formalities of a desperate campaign that sees them currently in 12th place, and deservedly so.

Another defeat.

Another awful performance.

The new manager has a huge job on his hands. Too many players not fit to wear the shirt.

1-1

Newcastle United and Chelsea played out an entertaining draw to bring down a contrasting season for both sides at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea lack potency in dominant second half

It was all Newcastle early on and they did brilliantly to exploit Chelsea down the flanks, with Saint-Maximin giving Cesar Azpilicueta a particularly torrid time.

After the break, though, it was all Chelsea. They stepped it up and put pressure on the visiting defence, but it was the story of their season as they simply couldn't hit the target.

Joao Felix had the best chance to win it with a late header in what could be his final game as he returns to parent club Atletico Madrid, but the Blues know exactly what they need in the summer.

Frank Lampard signs off as interim manager with a disappointing result, but the Magpies held strong and their fans, in full voice and without their shirts in the away end, can now fully focus on the return of those magical Champions League nights.

Chelsea are set to sell FIVE homegrown stars this summer in a brutal cull of so-called standard bearers from their fabled youth academy.

Contract rebel Mason Mount looks to have already played his last game for the club with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all battling to sign him.

talkSPORT understands Mount could be followed out of the Stamford Bridge exit door by England pair Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as well as Trevor Chalobah and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Part of the reasoning is that Chelsea need to raise funds from player sales to trim their bloated squad and finance incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino’s summer rebuild.

Their recruitment team believe their British players will generate the most revenue while also dramatically slashing their wage bill.

Gallagher is not believed to have done enough this season to convince the Blues hierarchy that he ill be a part of their long-term plans.

West Ham, Newcastle and Crystal Palace, where he had a successful loan spell, have all been alerted to the possibility of signing the £40million-rated midfielder.

Loftus-Cheek is already in advanced negotiations with Italian giants AC Milan and willing to take a pay cut to seal the move.

Chalobah, who has made 17 Premier League starts this season, has suitors abroad as well as in the Premier League.

Hudson-Odoi has spent the season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen but the German side do not want to sign him permanently.

Chelsea Football Club is pleased to confirm Mauricio Pochettino will become head coach of the men’s team from the beginning of the 2023/24 season.

The Argentine will begin his new role on 1 July 2023 on a two-year contract, with a club option of a further year.

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, said:

'Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward. He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.'

Owners Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, José E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss added:

'The sporting team conducted a diligent and thoughtful process that the Board is proud of. We are delighted that Mauricio will be joining Chelsea. Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.'

Pochettino is a coach renowned for his sides’ high-energy and eye-catching style and he has built a reputation for helping young players realise their full potential within a strong squad ethos.

The 51-year-old has several seasons of Premier League experience in addition to coaching in Spain and France. He was most recently in charge at Paris Saint-Germain and guided the club to a Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France.

Mauricio’s staff will include Jesus Perez, Miguel d’Agostino, Toni Jimenez and Sebastiano Pochettino.

Joao Felix will not be signing for Chelsea on a permanent deal this summer, according to Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo.

The forward, who joined Chelsea on loan in January, scored four goals in 20 appearances for the club.

Cerezo said incoming Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino had chosen not to retain the 23-year-old Portuguese.

"Yesterday we had the news that the new Chelsea manager does not [want] Felix," he told Spanish outlet AS.

"We've known for less than 24 hours. He'll come back here and we'll see. We don't have anything planned."

Atletico made Felix the fifth most expensive player in history when they paid Benfica £113m for the then 19-year-old in 2019.

He has gone on to score 34 goals in 131 appearances in all competitions and helped them to win the 2020-21 La Liga title.
