Chinese Muslims should oppose religious extremism and not blindly follow foreign doctrine, said China’s top religious official according to state media reports.

Speaking at a national congress of Muslims that began on Saturday in Beijing, Wang Zuoan, chief of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, said Chinese Muslims should “firmly resist the penetration of religious extremism” and “always keep to the direction of developing Islam with Chinese characteristics”, said a report on the administration’s website.

Wang said Muslims’ beliefs and customs should be respected, but that religious interference in politics, justice or education was intolerable, Xinhua reported.

Addressing some 300 Muslim leaders at the congress, Wang said their followers should not simply follow the leadership of a foreign religion or treat foreign values as exemplary, China Daily reported.

China has an estimated 20 million Muslims. Many of them live in the northwestern provinces of Xinjiang, Ningxia, Gansu and Qinghai.

China’s vast Muslim world has come under a media spotlight in recent years after a series of deadly attacks in Xinjiang, home to more than 10 million Uygurs.

Beijing has blamed the violence on jihadis influenced by extremism who are seeking the independence of Xinjiang. But critics say Beijing’s suppression of religious freedom in the region is behind the attacks.

Global Times, affiliated with People’s Daily, reported on Thursday that Xinjiang residents were now required to hand their passports over to local police. Those who want to travel abroad need to apply for permission under a “passport management policy”.

The report has been removed from Global Times’ website.

Interesting, that last paragraph about what's going on in Xinjiang at the moment.

If China respects their right to pray and the ladies to cover themselves then there is no reason for them to become extremists. Banning Salat and Ramadan as has been the case in the past will have consequences.

Just to put everything in perspective:

There are two major Muslim ethnic groups in China: the Hui and the Uyghurs. While these two ethnic communities may share the same god, their respective positions within Chinese society remain radically different.

The Uyghurs, who speak a Turkic language written with an Arabic script, are as distinct in appearance from the Han Chinese as Native Americans are from their Caucasian counterparts. Their population of around 8 million mostly resides in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, a vast province situated along the borders of several Central Asian countries in China’s northwestern frontier.

The Hui, estimated at around 11 million, can be found throughout China. Most, however, are concentrated within the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. They are unique in China as they represent the only one of the 56 officially designated nationality groups in China “for which religion…is the sole unifying criterion of identity.” In skin and blood, the Hui are little different from their Han brethren. For the vast majority of the Hui, Mandarin is a mother tongue, and besides refraining from pork and alcohol, they have much the same dietary preferences as the Han.

What consequences? Elaborate?

China does not ban anyone from praying or females from covering their heads.

Research a bit for the real reason of extremism by Muslims in China.

It wasn't about not getting a place to pray or covering head.

I have done research on the subject and spoken to Chinese Muslim's as well, have you?? In sporadic incidents women are disallowed from covering there heads though it may not be the governments official policy. If they would respect Muslim sentiments then such things wouldn't happen.

Islam with Chinese characteristics? What would that look like?

This is similar to the views that some RSS people whom I interacted were saying. Islam with Hindu characteristics. Sounded confused. Probably referring to Sufi ways may be.

So basically what Mr.Wang is saying is, be Chinese and follow Chinese way of life and not some foreign culture and religion from Arabia.

To be honest this stuff just reads like a justification for extreme acts.

You are seeing things. I am defending human rights and the right to worship without being intimidated. Would say the same about Chinese Christian people as well that they have the right to worship.

So being banned to pray or cover their heads justifies extremism in your eyes?

Well, according to the information I have the authorities often use violence in forcing people to dress in a particular way or to stop fasting. People have the right to protest that is called extremism today.

Uh huh. We aren't stupid buddy, we can read between the lines. You're not even subtle with it.

Whose "we"?? I didn't know defending the rights of Muslim people was a crime!!! You are right that I am open with it.

I am so frustrated by some of my muslim friends here on this board.

Let's see how they sound so out of place when they try to defend Islam practices, I am very confident that all these ideas they have got for Islam is through listening street talk, some half backed brain Moulvi/Mulla or surfing internet. Let's try them...

1) I thought Prophet told once that " Law of the Land" is the supreme duty of any Muslims
2) I thought cloths are not symbolism of Islam and true muslim can pray anywhere even from their homes, they don't need to go out to be called muslim
3) They try to preach world that they should be tolerate towards Saudi way of life and style while their Saudi s do not even let anyone talk about their religion in open...Hypocrisy at the best...

I can list more but let's see how my muslim friends come up with some excuses to even call above as propaganda.

Law of the land is only supreme if human rights are respected. You can't expect that when people are being told not to pray, worship or fast. There will rightfully be protests everywhere if such things happen, simple. Loo at the law of Pakistan and how the politicians play with it to fill their bank accounts. People have every right to protest in such circumstances. It is all about how a good law is implemented by any government.

I think you are missing point here...China is not a democratic country..Chinese should thankful to the communist that they allow them to breath the air without charging them! And less you talk about Pakistan's treatment to minority groups better..besides, Pakistan has multiple laws ruling..we are talking about one law for all citizens..democratic country like USA, Canada, India etc..

So if law of land says you can't pray in public, there is no reason to fight against that law..it's not that China is banning Musilms, I think no one can demonstrate their beliefs and religious practice in public...so please, like I said don't try to find excuse to justify hypocrisy.

Law of Land means whatever power of the land ask you to do, you have to do it..if you are in USA, Canada or India you can protest where real power is with the people but not in Russia or China...

And you talking about human rights...so funny...that's what I am saying hypocrisy..

I don't see any hypocrisy at all. If law says can't pray in public then it should be for everyone. Problem I have is why are there specific rules for Muslim people? Christians cross themselves in public that can also be seen as a form of worship, don't you know that many are wanting this act banned as well? I don't understand what you are on about or what your point as as there seems to be none! Mines is that rules should be for everyone, Muslim's should be allowed to fast and Christians allowed to cross themselves in public if they want. You people see extremism everywhere, soon you'll be calling me an extreme Liverpool FC supporter! How does fasting or crossing yourself effect any land of the law ehh? Many years back when people in the UK protested against the poll tax was that extremism as well? You don't know what you are on about! I don't see anything funny here at all.

CricFan007 Sure China is not a democratic country but for practising Muslim's Islam is more important than that. Problems occur when they beat Muslim people up for fasting or make them eat pork. Is this what communism is all about??

Suppression of religious rights is no excuse for extremism. Those who can't see this simple fact are a potential danger to the society.

Hmm, are you sure Christians are allowed to pray in public in China? China is a communist country and communism sees religion as a threat. So yes communism is all about hating religion and religious symbols.

Marx - Marx dubbed religion the “opiate of the masses,” and opined that, “Communism begins where atheism begins.”

Now there are some religious communists but but not in China

People should be grateful that a Communist country gives this much freedom to religious people. Compare this to what communist governments tried to do up till the 80's !! If we can justify Ultra-conservative countries like Saudi,Iran & Vatican etc for their rules, we pretty much have to accept the Chinese can do what they want . They aren't making any claims of being an Equitable , secular democracy ..Are they ...

I think they are allowed to cross themselves! We have to stand up against hate, the communists will never admit that they hate religion. There may be some religious communists in China as well! It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack though.
