Could Jasprit Bumrah be India's greatest ever bowler?

True. Those balls against Bairstow in England, Marsh in Australia & Maharaj yesterday were a treat for the eyes.

He can produce them when he has gone for boundaries and is under pressure as well, he doesn’t need to be in a specific groove. This denotes mental strength. He can never be counted out of the game.

Yes he can. The benchmark is lower to break into than countries like Australia, West Indies or Pakistan in bowling.

Kapil was considered an all rounder, also pitches in 80s and 90s supported bowling more...
So all rounder isn't counted a bowler? If pitches in '80s and '90s were supporting bowling more then bowlers like Imran, Wasim, Waqar, WI bowlers, Australian bowlers too benefitted from those pitches?

Do you agree?

I do agree, but that doesnt meant kapil was anyway near their level lol.

Kapil can not be considered ATG bowler like those guys nice try tho..

Anyone here trying to claim kapil as an ATG bowler is delusional.

Bumrah will probably be the first indian bowler to be considered a great. ATG status might be possible for him lets wait and see.

Lmao people trying to compare kapil, with imran and the 2 Ws or any of the WI and Aus bowlers

If the DRS were in place in those era the records of all these bowlers would be very different. 100s of noballs would have been called. So many leg before would not have been leg befores. Seam altering would have been caught. West Indian bowlers were known for stretching their foot and getting away.

Bumrah's special quality is mixing up one-day type deliveries in Test matches. Almost all great bowlers do. Shaun Marsh in 2018 was trapped in front with an outstanding slower ball. In this match, Bumrah used a yorker as a surprise weapon. He doesn't just rely on line and length to take wickets.

True. Also, umpiring was really sub standard during those days, with home umpires batting and bowling for their home teams.

On 10, my rating would be :-

Kapil Dev - 8/10
Zaheer Khan - 7/10
Javagal Srinath - 7/10
Mohammad Shami - 7.5/10

Too early to rate Bumrah but on potential, he is pretty much a 9/10.

In the last 5 or 6 years so many fast bowlers average beteen 20 and 25. Even Ishant is doing far better than career average. Sure they are all bowling better. But batting standard has reached a nadir. Fast bowlers just enjoy it. But Bumrah is special though.

World batting is at its lowest during last few years. However there are some like Bumrah, Shami, Cummins who are special irrespective.

Rahul Dravid, deep down, would be infuriated by India’s defeat in the 2nd Test.

He has played against South Africa in South Africa many times in his career and would know that this current team is the weakest the hosts have ever been and thus, India have their best chance to win their first ever series in the country.

Losing a test to this team would be extremely troubling for him.

Two major events that eventually led to India’s defeat were, first: when India won the toss, batted first, and got just 202.

This score meant it allowed an average South African team, this time even without Quinton de Kock, to stay in the game. And they did that by getting a slender lead in the first innings.

India in the second innings again failed to get a big score but the taking point and some celebration in that innings was the out of form Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane getting some runs and it seemed at the time that their efforts, with Hanuma Vihari’s thrown in, would be enough to win India the game.

And let’s be honest, with the pitch producing the odd ball to kick without warning, who would have thought SA would get 244 in the final innings against a quality Indian bowling line up?

The second major event was how India bowled on the final day.

Shami just started off colour in the second innings, drifting onto the pads a lot but this is something you get with Shami. He can blow hot or cold. Fortunately for India these days it’s the "Shami on fire" that India gets more.

The more interesting talking point is Jasprit Bumrah.

Right through this Test, and for a while in Tests, I have been watching an interesting change in his bowling. Mind you, it’s the same Bumrah in many ways, with regards to his attitude, his effort--his speed too, has not waned as drastically as some of the other quick bowlers around the world. He is also damn accurate as he has always been.

All those impressive traits are still intact, just that when the ball lands on the pitch, it’s not doing much.

It’s not moving off the pitch as much as it should, especially on this Wanderer’s surface where virtually every ball changed course after landing. Shardul Thakur demonstrated this most prominently and he did it with both a scrambled seam and straight up seam too.

Bumrah kept bowling with all his heart, attacked the stumps, but just wasn’t able to produce that magic delivery that suddenly cuts back and traps the batter LBW or leave the right hander to knock his off stump back.

A lot of Bumrah deliveries are just going straight in the air and straight off the pitch. This is something Bumrah must look at, as to why that is the case.

At this stage of his career, two things I feel Bumrah must do to evolve further is, if he finds that the ball isn’t doing much for him on a particular day, he must start bowling the outside off line where the odd ball will come in with his natural angle and force the batsman to play.

This will pose a new challenge to batters facing Bumrah - whether to play or leave those balls - and even his benign deliveries may become more threatening and call for more respect from the batters. These will be dot balls too.

When the ball isn’t doing much in the air or off the pitch, attacking the stumps every ball is just easy fodder for batters and that’s what panned out on the final day. The ease with which SA reached the target on the final day was because of how much India bowled straight, innocuous deliveries into the stumps.

The other thing Bumrah must do, and hopefully the new team management can open his mind to it, is using the crease more.

Now he tends to bowl only from one point on the bowling crease. If he occasionally goes wide with his natural angle coming in, that becomes a variation for a batter to worry about even if the ball is coming straight as a dart.

Wide off the crease and outside the off and be patient and wickets will come--that should be the motto. Attack the stumps and try to demolish batting sides only when that ball is jagging around like mad or yes, keeping really low.

India will be strengthened by the return of Virat Kohli and this one performance of SA won’t suddenly make them a hard team to beat, their pedigree does not suggest that.

This Indian team does not lose confidence very easily, this is a team that wins the next test after suffering a crashing defeat and being all out for 36 in that Test.

India must start as favourites to win at Cape Town and thereby the series. And yes, Pujara and Rahane cannot be thinking that they have proved their "critics wrong". More is expected from batters of their experience (especially Rahane) , after a long run of poor form and when the team management backs you to the hilt. An Elgar-like innings would be the more appropriate payback.

Seventh five-fer for Bumrah - the joint-most for an Indian seamer after 27 Tests along side Kapil Dev & Irfan Pathan

Five-wicket hauls for India in Cape Town:
7/120 Harbhajan 2010/11
5/114 S Sreesanth 2010/11
5/42 J Bumrah 2021/22 *

Bumrah has a dodgy action but ICC is too scared to do anything. His action would have been investigate if he had been from any other Asian country.

Could end up being India's best and most dangerous fast bowler in history if he keeps going like this.

Bumrah has a dodgy action but ICC is too scared to do anything. His action would have been investigate if he had been from any other Asian country.

Has anyone called Bumrah's action dodgy except a few pakistanis?

In Australia, Damien Fleming did a thorough analysis of his action and he said it was hyper extension. The Saffer and English commies said the same.

Bumrah is now getting to that level where he will start getting compared to the very best in the game.

He is an amazing bowler in all formats.

Bumrah is still a world class bowler but he has lost pace. The bumrah of 2018-2019 would have won them the series.

Still think his action isn't clean.
But he'll never ever get called, just like Indian captain and players can get away with talking into the stump Mike.

Dont think so. Check his spell in England where he took out pope and Bairstow. His spell in this very test in the 1st innings.

There is not one expert who says Bumrah's action isnt clean.

His action is unusual, with the short run up and different arm swings but it's a fair ball, no doubting it.

He has been completely outbowled by Rabada, Jansen and Ngidi.
Even outbowled by Shami and Thakur.
Add to that missing out in the two chases and that is a bang average series by him.

For me he has lost pace, he was 6th best bowler in the series. He is still a quality bowler.

Bumrah is a good international bowler and on occasions a very good bowler. But a GOAT he is not, not even when looking at Indian bowlers only.

Obviously things can change pretty quickly at international level, however as of this moment there's no reason why he shouldn't. He should aim much higher than that and look to establish himself as an all time great.

However I've noticed that he's played just two matches in India (Asia in general). Injuries? Those conditions are unforgiving for fast bowlers, so he'll have to keep himself fit somehow. Won't be an easy task with the grueling international fixtures and the IPL where you have to bowl with intensity.

Good luck to him though, I really like him. He has a massive future ahead of him.

Best bowler across formats by a distance. I don't get this tribalistic mentality where we have to down players because we either don't like them or their country of origin. Cricket has such a small pool of quality players more than any other sport. It makes no sense to hate on the few exceptional players we have.

An average below 25 going at less than 3 an over is "bang average"? I shudder at the thought of him having a "good" series.

Thakur actually looks ordinary for me. Benefited due to massive pressure generated by Shami and Bumrah. SA thought they could go after the "lesser" bowlers. No one who's watched the series can tell me that Thakur bowled better than Bumrah, not a chance. Can't just look at the wicket column, 7 of his 12 wickets came from that 7-for.

The thing with Bumrah is that he keeps it tight when he's not taking wickets and still delivers unplayable deliveries when not in rhythm as well. We have a serious bowler here, there's no faffing around it.

Compare Bumrah's bowling this year with Mohammad Asif's in 2006-07 when he had slightly lower scores to defend, but was bowling to Smith, Kallis and De Villiers.

Bumrah is a very fine bowler, but when South Africa required two of the highest fourth innings chases ever achieved in South Africa in the last two Tests they managed to nullify his threat and win comfortably.

He’s a very good bowler. In fact I remember vividly being impressed at his debut in Australia and said then India found a gem.

But on this tour while he bowled well I think he was a bit below par - when India needed him in the 4th innings he just couldn’t blow away the opposition.

That’s when you as a bowler need to deliver for your team and defend the target. You need to keep setting up the batsmen, you can’t just hope the pitch is always going to help you.

Overall India should be disappointed they didn’t win the series - they had the bowlers to do it but they just didn’t perform as a unit in the last innings barring the first Test.

Blame the atrocious team selection. Blame the poor team management. Blame the absolute third rate batting of the middle order. Average fielding and catching.

Bowlers bowled their heart out. A bit more of scoreboard pressure and we could have had the series.

Only once did India cross 300 and we won that test.

Bumrah has been the best bowler across all formats. But we are starting to see a decline.

LOL, Only impressive if the bowler is averaging in mid-teen or below. SA really batted well in this series. Fans should give credit to that.

Only Steyn had a better strike rate. He bowled very well even in this series. Expecting him to always win games on his own or average in teens is simply not realistic. India batting was crap. One time they batted well, they won.

I think he is making a strong case for himself already to be mentioned in an Indian all time test XI. If we pick three pacers for Indian XI, it has to be Kapil, Bumrah and Shami. Zaheer and Srinath were very good but with due respect to them, I think these three have surpassed those two in Test Cricket.

As the series progressed, the South African's figured out his typical line and length and use of the crease. He mostly pitches the ball up, he doesn't use the bouncer enough.

lol, that would explain why he picked up a 5-for in the 3rd Test putting his team well on top. It's the batting that let India down, not the bowlers

Phenomenal numbers. Seriously he should aim to become a Test great at the minimum

Poor team selection. There was no way Vihari and Iyer would have played worse than Rahane and Pujara.

He went missing in the second innings in very helpful conditions in the second and third test. The South African's had a strategy against him and they stuck to it by diligently defending his stock balls and punishing anything lose. Even Sanjay Manjrekar in his analysis mentioned that Bhumra does not use his bouncer enough and relies too much on full pitched or short of a length deliveries.

It doesn't take much to be India's greatest ever fast bowler. Bumrah will definitely get there.

Bhai, with all due respect, according to Manju even Tendulkar was not good enough.

He's got a fair bit to do to get past Kapil, in my opinion.

Kapil held the world test wickets record. Incredible for a guy bowling swing in India. Kapil gave his best performances v WI & Oz, heavyweights of his era. And he had 99 test wickets v Pakistan alone, the other huge rivalry during some peak Pakistan batting years too.

Weird thing for me is Bumrah actually hasn't really achieved anything at all in home Tests. How can he be India's best fast bowler when he only has 4 wickets in India?

So he'll need at least 250/300 Test wickets in total by the end of his career to get into the conversation.

Also needs to do the business at home, stack up some successes and noteable performances there. Kapil had 200+ home wickets and 11 fifers there.

Could he be? Sure, he's a unique bowler and has some great qualities. But he's still got an awful lot to do.

4 wickets only at home? Very low number, for a team
That does play test matches at home regularly.

Yeah, stats from cricinfo.

I assume he's missed some home series through injury and then played a few of matches where Ahswin & Jadeja just did all the business.

Bumrah gets a 5-fer!

Is this his first in India?

Not only the greatest Indian bowler of all time he quite possibly could go down as the greatest bowler of all time alongside steyn, akram and mcgrath. He has many more years left yet

This guy is something else.. as the control in which he bowls his balls is something genius..

For me his is defo a ATG. In the span of 5 years he has taken bowling to another level in an era dominated by batsmen…

I thought his career is gone after back problems in 2019.
Proved me wrong,he came back and did well in overseas conditions.
Only problem is he always crumbles under big stages and his odi form is a bit of worrying.

Brilliant performance again. 8 5-fers in 29 tests now.

He has done extremely well because 7 5-fers came when playing away. To put it in perspective, Anderson has 8 -fers in his entire career when playing away and Anderson is a good bowler.

Only 15 pacers in the entire history of cricket have 20+ 5-fers. It will be interesting to see if Bumrah can cross that.

It will be great if he can win a few more big away series for his team. India always struggled with that before Bumrah came into the picture.

Former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Parthiv Patel, in a chat with Virender Sehwag on Cricbuzz, praised Bumrah and explained his rise in domestic and international cricket, which was full of hardships and challenges.

Parthiv then went on to claim that when he was with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014, he had told Virat Kohli about Bumrah and asked him to take a look at the fast bowler, but the then RCB skipper shrugged it off.

"In 2014, when I was in RCB I had told Virat that there's a bowler Bumrah, just see him. The reply that came from his end was 'Chord na yaar, ye Bumrah-Vumrah kya karenge?'" Parthiv Patel claimed on Cricbuzz.

As things turned out, MI roped in the pacer.

"When he was first picked, Bumrah played Ranji Trophy for the first 2-3 years. 2013 was his first year, and he didn't have a good season in 2014. In 2015, it was so bad that there were discussions going on that he might have to be sent back home mid-season. But he slowly began improving and Mumbai Indians really backed him. It was his own hard work and such backing that really brought out the best in him," he added.

At least Kohli recognized his skills once he was picked for the national side. Better late than never :jimmy

You talk about "away" as if it's this one place where wicket taking is more difficult standard. Away for Bumrah is more conducive to pace bowling while away for Anderson is far less conducive...so, that's an illogical comparison.

Now, the above doesn't take away from the fact that Bumrah is an amazing bowler and has developed freakish control of the ball not just in terms of line and length but also seam and swing. His bowling on the England tour was a treat to watch!

It's may appear that surface makes it easy for all pacers to do well in non-Asia, reality is not so simple when we take a look at results. You may have skills to do well in Eng, but struggle in Aus.

List of Asian pacers who have taken 100+ away wickets with sub 25 average,

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e...6;team=7;team=8;template=results;type=bowling

List is just two bowlers long. Wasim and Bumrah. Clearly, Asian bowlers don't find it easy to pick wickets cheaply outside of their home. It is a misconception to think that Asian bowlers find it easy to do well outside their home countries.

If it was as simple as bowling in more pace conducive surface then then likes of IK, Dev, Srinath, Wasim, Waqar wouldn't have done better at home and Anderson wouldn't have averaged 32 in NZ/SA/Aus/WI.

Most bowlers will find it easier to bowl well at home conditions as opposed to away conditions. Home conditions is where they learn to bowl. There could be some exceptions, but for anyone with reasonable long career it's not the norm to do much better outside of home no matter if home is India, Pakistan , Eng or Aus.

Kapil is still far away India’s greatest bowler

Bumrah will probably not even surpass Srinath.

Bumrah is already 28+ of age , so i doubt he'll reach 300 wickets. So this will seperate him from Wasim , Imran , waqar even Kapil Dev and Vaas. All of whome have 350+ test wickets. But still credit to Bumrah for maintaining such low average for first 100 test wickets. I'll be happy if Bumrah managed to end career with 250 wickets at sub 25 average.

Bumrah will likely cross 300 test wickets. But at what avg, we dont know.

If he maintains his present avg for 300 or even 250 test wickets, he will be the third best asian pacer after Wasim and Imran.

Vaas is low because unlike Bumrah, Shami and Shoaib, he was not an all conditions bowler. Did well only at home and NZ, excellent ODI bowler for sure.

He’s been the best bowler in the world for a number of years now and will rightly go down as not only Indians greatest fast bowler but the GOAT alongside Wasim Akram and McGrath category

Mumbai Indians pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who picked his maiden fifer in the IPL, said he is happy with his rhythm in the ongoing season and the "noise outside" doesn't affect him personally. Despite the five-wicket haul, Bumrah has been able to take only 10 wickets in this IPL season from 11 matches. "Look we prepare for the tournament and we have our process, we don't look at the end result," Bumrah said at the post-match press conference after MI lost to KKR by 52 runs.

"If you understand the game, you have to really observe what's going on, what is the game like, what situation you are bowling like, and for me personally I was very happy with the rhythm going on throughout the tournament." Bumrah bowled exceptionally well to restrict KKR to 165 for 9, but the MI batters faltered yet again, as the team suffered its ninth loss in eleven games.

"I know there is a lot of noise outside that goes on but it doesn't really affect me. Because I am not a person who judges my performance on what others think or what the experts are saying or whatever people want to say," he said.

Bumrah hasn't been able to pick wickets consistently this season but the pacer said the way he contributes to the team is more important for him.

"I look at my personal evaluation is very important, I look at the processes that I have to follow and I look at the end result on how I can contribute to the team, by sometimes bowling a good over and however I can help the team.

"So this is how I play cricket and this is how I always wanted to play cricket and that is how I will do (play) going further as well."

Mumbai are already out of the play-offs race and Bumrah admitted that the team was still searching for a "complete performance".

"You said it right, we didn't manage to close games, in a lot of games, we came very close and we crumbled in crucial scenarios. This is a new team and our youngsters are understanding and making their game better,” said Bumrah, one of the senior members.

"This is not an excuse that you lost because of it. But when new youngsters come they take time to understand their game. We are searching for a complete performance and we are trying and working hard, but it hasn't worked this time,” he added.

Bumrah said MI will look to put up a good show in the remaining three matches.

"In the remaining games, our focus is to give an ideal performance where everything clicks and how we can come in the best case scenario," he signed off.

Kapil has set the bar quite high for all the Indian bowlers. He is not getting any close to 400 test wickets or 300 something ODI wickets. Zaheer from 2008-2011 was a pretty complete bowler who lacked support from fellow pace bowlers. Plus both Kapil and Zaheer have an odi world cup under their belt. A lot for Bumrah to do to get there.

Bumrah has not even played 30 tests and you want to make him greatest Indian bowler.

In my mind

1. Kapil
2. Zaheer Khan
3. Javagal Srinath

That’s it. Even Irfan Pathan and Shami are ahead of bumrah at the mo.

Bumrah is already on a downward spiral in tests and ODIs. Unless baby pace sorts bud act out he will fizzle away very quickly.

Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in Indian cricket right now. The Mumbai Indians pacer has even picked a five-for in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. On Tuesday, he reached a massive T20 milestone in the match against SunRisers Hyderabad. He took only one wicket of Washington Sundar but with that lone scalp he became the first Indian pacer to pick 250 wickets in T20s. So far, four Indian spinners - Ravichandran Ashwin (274), Yuzvendra Chahal (271), Piyush Chawla (270) and Amit Mishra (262) - have gone past the 250-wicket mark in T20 cricket.

After Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is second among Indian pacers with 223 wickets.

'Bumrah plays all 14 matches for MI but for India...': Twitter goes berserk after pacer misses 1st T20I vs SA

Bumrah's fitness is certain to keep the Indian think tank and the fans worried as the right-arm pacer had only made a comeback to the Indian side in the Australia series. Bumrah's injury concerns gave rise to various reactions on Twitter.

Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the first T20I against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram due to back pain raising concerns about the pace spearhead's fitness with the T20 World Cup barely a couple of weeks away. Jasprit Bumrah complained of back pain during India's practice session on Tuesday. The BCCI Medical Team assessed him. He is ruled out of the first #INDvSA T20I," tweeted BCCI moments after India captain Rohit Sharma confirmed after winning the toss against South Africa that Bumrah had a niggle. He was replaced by Deepak Chahar in India's playing XI on Wednesday.

"Bumrah had a niggle in the morning so he misses out and Chahal misses out as well. Deepak Chahar and Ashwin are back," Rohit said after opting to bowl.

Bumrah's fitness is certain to keep the Indian think tank and the fans worried as the right-arm pacer had only made a comeback to the Indian side in the Australia series. He played in the rain-curtailed 8-over-a-side in Nagpur and then the series decider in Hyderabad where he conceded 50 runs without taking a wicket.

Bumrah's injury concerns gave rise to various reactions on Twitter.

There have been multiple changes from the side that India fielded against Australia. Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were already rested. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has made a comeback. The injury to Bumrah has opened up doors for Deepak Chahar, who is among the four standby players for the World Cup.

Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin too returned to the side, the latter mainly because of the number of left-handers in the South African unit.

"This is an important series for us and we want to continue all the good work. Guys always enjoy the India trip, the energy of the guys is up again and nice to be back in action after a couple of months. Different conditions to Australia but in terms of match practice, it is a great opportunity," said South Africa captain Temba Bavuma.
