Messi is not better than Ronaldo, I mean Ronaldo 'El Phenomenon' :uakmal. Not in my eyes at least

Messi is a better footballer and a more humble person. Ronaldo is an insecure person who loves to steal the spotlight. Deep down he knows that Messi is better but he is too arrogant to admit that. And not to mention, Ronaldo is a sore loser as well. I never liked this guy even though I'm a Man United fan and Ronaldo played for us.

MenInG you should bump this thread since Messi has won 5 Balln D Or's and now no more comparison is there to discuss,

Loving this. Karma can really come back & bite you. Glad to see Ronaldo flopping after his comments about Iceland. Brilliant

Well, there you have it.

Messi doesn't have to score to assist his teammates, because he contributes a lot more than just goals.

Messi is more of a team player while Ronaldo is a selfish player who just wants to score goals. I have seen him get visibly frustrated after one of his team mates scored a goal. Messi never does that because he puts the team first and then any personal milestones unlike Ronaldo who just wants all the spotlight on himself.

Excellent performance by the GOAT today. We are so lucky to live in the era of Messi.

A Copa America will seal a Ballon d'or for him.

Picking Suarez to finish second, he had a better club season than Ronaldo.

Messi the better overall.

Mess is the greatest of all time; Ronaldo is the distant second best of his era.

That is where the comparison ends. A comparison that lost relevance years ago.

Only burnt Man United fans who can't get over their love for Ronaldo and the ownage in 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals still clutch at straws and insist that Ronaldo is better, which is such a bad joke it is not even funny.

More talented yes but Ronaldo has always kept himself relevant with his unreal goal scoring and it's only now when he's faltering for Portugal and has had average CL finals that the claim can be made that Neymar and Suarez are comparable to him, add Iniesta to that too. It's only your burn for all things United related - a stretch because most informed United fans don't even consider him a legend - to resort to rubbish hyperbole. It's still quite likely that he will retire as one of the 5 best players to ever have played the game. Ronaldo also wasn't even at United in 2011 so I don't see what resentment towards Messi we can hold for that final.

Messi scored in that final that's why. I have seen plenty of Manchester United fans say ronaldo is better than messi.

Ronaldo has been a wonderful goalscorer, no one can deny that. Comfortably the second best player of the generation but his problem or should we say bad luck has been that his era coincided with the era of the most talented attacking player the game has seen.

Some United fans may not consider him a legend but I think he definitely is one, and I agree that he can end up as one of the top 5 players of all time.

No, Suarez isn't as good as Ronaldo yet. Maybe on current form, but Ronaldo has been doing for 7-8 seasons what he has done in the last 2-3. Perhaps he will get there eventually, he is on the top of his game.

Neymar has the talent but so far he has not shown anything that he is in the same league as Ronaldo. I believe he is a notch below, so let's see.

As far as Iniesta goes, it is always difficult to compare midfielders to attackers. It is like comparing the likes of Zidane, Platini, Cruyff etc. to Maradona, Pele and di Stefano.

Iniesta is no doubt one of the all-time great midfielders, and that is good enough.

There is definitely resentment towards Messi from Man United fans. The guy has pretty much singlehandedly snatched two Champions League titles from their hands in the last 7 years and coupled with their history with Ronaldo, a section of United and Madrid fans is all that remains as far as the 'Ronaldo is better than Messi' bandwagon is concerned.

The neutral audience recognizes that Messi has clearly left Ronaldo in his dust and it is not even a valid comparison anymore.

While the hot topic these days is if Messi is the greatest ever, the best Ronaldo can do is to get compared to Messi himself. He doesn't raise the question of whether he is the greatest ever or not, because the answer is a definite no, unlike in Messi's case.

I think painting it as a rest of the world v united n Madrid fans is a little off the mark. The former have recognized that once Messi could match ronaldos goalscoring there was only ever going to be one winner in that discussion and that happened way back in 2008. Most fans who have been on the wrong end of his brilliance are still rather grateful to have been witness to it. With Ronaldo I guess a major section can relate to the fact that he's achieved what he has through sheer perseverance and a psychotic individualistic streak that gives many mere mortals hope that they could achieve something similar if they had even 20% of the dedication that he shows. Not that he's untalented, much the opposite, but it's much less likely that you'll have Messis god given natural ability than to train yourself to a level where you can overachieve to this extent. Many of these Ronaldo fan boys I've seen admit this.

Anyways at this point I do think Suarez and iniesta influence big games a lot more than Ronaldo does, the latter always has to an extent where he's comparable to even Zidane. That doesn't make them better maybe but you have to see what opportunity cost you pay when you swap one for the other.

Massive Real Madrid fan here.I think Ronaldo is the second best in the world, after Messi. He(Ronaldo)is arguably one of the greatest of all time.He is the only one that could ever compete with Messi.Ronaldo, after coming to Madrid has become a beast goalscorer, but in his United days,he was a force. He had 40+ goals in his last season,as a winger too.He is going through a rough patch now, since his injury before the CL Semis. But there is no doubt he will return to form.He is 31 now,he should play deeper, give Bale and Benzema more chances.

Messi is,however, the best forward of all time.No questions asked.Barcelona are lucky to have him.

This fan knows what's up.

Messi drags Argentina to a final the third year in a row.

He either scores or sets up a majority of his teams goals for club and country.

*Messi's Final*

Goals- 0
Assists- 0
Shots on target- 0
Penalty missed- 1
Yellow card- 1
Dives- 1 Hollywood certified
Tears- 32 litres
Betrayed by- lucky beard 😜😜
Match summary- Messi retires & takes Mascherano & Aguero along with him!

Next time you make fun of Cristiano Ronaldo for scoring a penalty, make sure you remember Messi retired after missing one. ✌

I am done with the drama tbh. I have seen it alot. Messi has been a big player. Always stepped up but for him winning a trophy with Argentina is like winning 10 trophies with Barcelona. But He retired so retired but I WANNA GET ON MY KNEES AND BOW DOWN TO THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. CRISTIANO RONALDO MATE. WOOOOWWW

What a guy he is man what a guy. Always criticized. Always hated. Wherever he went he was hated. He was hated for showing his skills and was called show off in England. Then in 2006 he was hated for his antics vs England and again with these Barcelona fans. No One in this world was ever criticized as much as Cristiano Ronaldo. BUT LOOK AT HIM. He came back stronger. Every Time he played bad and was criticized, he stepped up and dominated games and was still criticized.

Ronaldo never had an easy life. He lost in Euros 2004 with Portugal and look at him now. He is doing everything to take this team to final. Plays as a center forward. Always led them to knock out stages. And when he failed once, he was criticized heavily. Loads of hate towards him but look at this guy standing still and calling himself the best.

If you wanna be a top player/Athlete, you simply cant give up. Kobe, Ronaldo, Sachin Tend, MJ no one gave up. I hate to say this but MESSI literally gave up. Sorry but he did. He still has a chance to win a trophy with Argentina. I know he was criticized but he is someone that cant handle the pressure. Okay lets be honest here. Last 3 finals he played, he played bad. He cant thrive when he is put in pressure. Ronaldo is completely opposite. Latest example was against Hungary. He was in a huge pressure. 1-0 down and team on the verge of getting eliminated and he knew he would've been criticized heavy but he didn't give up and scored twice and assisted to take Portugal to the next round.

Messi isn't the GOAT. Never will be. Being honest with you. He cant be a GOAT just by backing off from the problems and hatred he is getting. This is why Ronaldo will always be better than Messi. PERIODDD

You say losing 3 finals in a row is hard.? Facing the criticism is something you cannot handle.?
Missing the penalty in the finals and retiring instead of apologising is brave.?
HE lost 4 years in a row at the Ballan d'Or ceremony.
HE is the most criticised footballer in the world.
HE celebrated the winning penalty at UCL final like a boss because it WON them the UCL.
HE is Cristiano Ronaldo.
I am not against Messi. He is one of the greatest ever and probably defines a generation of football. But running out of things do not make you the greatest. Facing them and ultimately succeeding against all odds make you a Legend.
You are the Role Model of Millions around the world Leo Messi. You cannot just quit. Learn from your most fierce competitor, learn from Ronaldo how to never say die.
This is a sad sadd day in World Football that Lionel Messi retires from Argentina. You would be a coward to me for taking this step. Also you would forever be a legend.

And what did he do in the final? Nothing but as always he stole the spotlight by taking of his shirt after scoring a penalty as if he won them the final. He didn't. Bale was better in both this year and 2014 final yet Ronaldo stole the spotlight. Don't even compare Messi with Ronaldo. Messi is a team player who not only scores but create chances for his team mates. Ronaldo is a selfish player who just wants to score goals and steal the spotlight. Messi > Ronaldo.

Alot of people complain about Ronaldo being selfish, wanting all the spotlight and having an ego, BUT that is what made him, he has become one of the greatest ever because of his ego, passion and desire to be the best.

I wouldn't regard Messi as GOAT as comparing players across different eras is always difficult BUT he is comfortably the best in this era, only stupidity or bias to suggest otherwise

Both players have underachieved at International level when you consider their ability, again to suggest Ronaldo has been amazing whilst Messi hasn't is either stupidity or bias

but then Messi is a tax fraud.. so it makes him lesser of a person than Ronaldo. He maybe arrogant selfish or whatever but Messi is worse than that.

Ronaldo will probably win the Ballon d'Or now, but I believe Griezmann deserves it.

Carried Atletico to the UCL final as well as the Euro final. Scored key goals against Barca and Bayern while Madrid had a joke route to the final, it was a walk in the park even without Ronaldo.

In the Euro's Griezmann won the golden boot by a mile and scored two goals against the world champions.

Portugal only won 2 games only and Ronaldo did not have a better tournament than Griezmann, and their route to the final was easier compared to Griezmann.

One thing that will probably count against Griezmann is that he didn't do much in both finals. In fact, he missed a penalty in the Champions League final.

The Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d'Or duopoly will not be broken this year. Ronaldo won't miss out in a season where he scored 50+ goals and won two major titles.

It's done, one player has won trophies for one club in one league.

One guy has won every trophy with a PL club, every trophy with a La Liga club and has now won a major international trophy.

The greatest player of his generation, and has a stake and legit argument at being one of the GOAT.

Lol, nice try BUT this doesn't change anything

Well done to him getting a medal BUT overall he had a crap tournament, just because they won doesn't automatically put him ahead of Messi and history will be testament to that

Let's face it. The only reason you think Ronaldo is better is because he played for United, the team you support. Delusional United fans like you should stop kissing up to Ronaldo. He has been gone since 2009 and doesn't care about United. I'm a United fan too and I think Messi is way better than Ronaldo. What did Ronaldo do in this match or in this tournament for that matter? You are nothing but a biased United fan. Move on from Ronaldo and also move on from 09 and 11 Champions League finals.

Messi getting Argentina to the World Cup Final >> Ronaldo's Portugal getting to the Euro 2016 final by virtue of a draw that can only be described as a cakewalk, and the hero hogging all the glory after getting injured and acting as if it was himself and not Pepe and Eder who won the final.

Then again Ronaldo has become an expert of sorts at these spotlight hogging antics, particularly due to his experience in Real Madrid's 'La Decima' victory, where he was invisible until his teammates first buried the game and then earned a penalty for him to get back in his comfort zone and act as if he had orchestrated the victory.

Yawn........

Messi has done it for Barcelona. Ronaldo has done it for United, Madrid and now Portugal. Winning an international tournament elevates you to the next level.

What did he do in this tournament? Hmm only got 3 goals and 3 assists which meant he contributed to 6 out of Portugals 9 goals. Guess that means nothing.

Well yes, 2 goals against Hungary in a desperate game where they had nothing to lose and 1 goal against Wales, poor against the rest

Did nowt else BUT Portugal were average overall not just Ronaldo, they have done a Greece

I just find it laughable that on such fine margins this suddenly puts Ronaldo ahead of Messi, so if Gignac's shot was 2 inches to the right Messi would still be better than Ronaldo?

Ronaldo getting the praise because of Eder's winner...Messi getting all the hate because of Higuian miss.

Messi has had 4 finals, 450 minutes and has 0 goals and 0 assists. Is it all Higuain's fault?

Didn't Messi also miss a one on one against Germany, did he not also balloon a penalty kick over the bar? It's easy to point to Higuain, he's an easy scapegoat.

What are you talking about? If they lost, they would have been knocked out.

I've always maintained Ronaldo is the greater player so your last point doesn't change anything for me. Sport is all about inches my friend and taking your moments.

Uff not saying Higuian is a scapegoat...what IF Eder did not score..Portugal went on to lose..would you still be praising Ronaldo like you are? I doubt it.

Messi has to take responsibility for his misses, only has himself to blame

It's daft to suggest one player is suddenly better than another based on fine margins, fair enough if Ronaldo had won the final then it shows he stepped up at the biggest moment BUT he was off the pitch, so if Gignac had scored then it would still be Messi>Ronaldo, do you see how absurd that is?

Exactly, it was do or die at that moment and Portugal stepped up, in the previous 2 games Portugal/Ronaldo were rubbish

Yes, you have always preferred Ronaldo BUT you bumped this thread saying it's done, all based on a final in which Ronaldo did nothing due to injury, that's ridiculous. Such fine margins in which neither Ronaldo or Messi have control over determine who the better player is

For some people, yes. As I said, I've always rated Ronaldo over Messi, so this does not apply to me brother.

We all know, when both players retire and they're careers are looked back upon, Messi will always have that one astrix next to his name. Look at a brilliant player like Cruyff, he falls just short of Pele and Maradona because he lost two world cup finals. Is it harsh, maybe? Is it unexpected that great players will be held to such high standards, no.

I would man, I'm one guy whose opinion has always been Ronaldo is the greatest.

Geordie and Mamoon will attest to that.

Anyway guys, both great players and a privilege to be able to watch both side by side in the same era. Let's appreciate them while we have them.

I'm off to bed, night. x

Despite this Messi and Ronaldo discussions you still have to give credit to a guy that first carries his team to a Champions League win, then carries his national team, putting them on his back and taking them all the way to become European champions and proving he is the best player in the world. Seriously, congratulations Pepe!

Gotta love the reaction, the way some have gone on about it you'd think Ronaldo had scored a hat trick and led Portugal to a dominating victory instead of being stretchered off at the 30th minute and his replacement hitting the winner in ET.

As for the Messi comparisons, isn't Messi ahead in all of them bar international titles, that too with a 2 year age difference? Even then, Ronaldo had a pretty average tournament. Messi still the best of this generation quite easily

Portugal's MVP.

How? He's physically superior to Messi and has had years where he has outscored him, in every other facet, Messi runs circles around him. Ronaldo is obsessed with scoring more goals than Messi and has even blown up at teammates for scoring 'his' goals. If Messi was interested in beating Ronaldos goal tally, he'd do it easy but the team comes first for him. It's counterproductive.

It's epic isn't it? Fans are going on like Ronaldo won Portugal them the Final. Little to no mention for Eder who scored a sensational match winner.

Ronaldo was replaced by Quaresma not Eder, also Messi doesn't have an insurmountable lead over Ronaldo as you suggest.

Ronaldo didn't overtake Messi as the greatest player of this generation because Eder capitalized on a chance that Higuain would have missed.

Messi has outperformed him international competitions, just like he has outperformed him in club competitions.

Messi doesn't need to win anything with Argentina to be the greatest individual player of all time.

Ronaldo seems to be a lucky charm for his team.

Whenever he has been absent in the final, his team has won a trophy.

You are becoming quite a JOKE on these forums.

first you claim Sterling was suppose to be the next big thing and soo much better than Martial who was suppose to flop, then you claimed so much absurd stuff BUT here you now claim that Ronaldo had no leadership and is on the same level as Messi on leadership, which is laughable as Ronaldos leadership has been out there throughout the tournament for everyone to see.

...and no point in comparing Eder and Higuain as you know and everyone knows how average this Portugal team is and has been for years. I wonder why Messi fans never bring up how good his team is at club level:13:.

As for being GOAT or best players of this generation that is not going to be decided by you. 10 years from now when people look back, you know what they will see? Ronaldo marching an average team to the Euro finals with such a slick back flick finish and a bullet header which sent them to the final, then him getting injured and all teary BUT continuing to march his team as a manager from the sidelines.

While Messi was someone who tried and failed, gave up and QUIT.

This is how history is.

...and when you yourself hear about all these great players in the past, you only hear about there achievements EXAGGERATED and there failures and bad moments erased out. This is how history shows itself, and Ronaldo has already booked a great place in it.

Firstly, I didn't say Sterling is better than Martial. I said that both are unproven.

Sterling has failed at City so far no doubt, but he was very good in his breakthrough season at Liverpool. Martial had a good season, but both players have a long career ahead of them.

I'm interested in seeing how Guardiola and Mourinho develop Sterling and Martial respectively. One thing is for sure, I would rather trust Guardiola with a young player than Mourinho.

However, I still remember your prediction regarding Depay and how he's as talented as Sanchez.

You also thought Man United will be in the top 4 and will finish ahead of Arsenal.

Sorry, but I win this season. Your predictions proved to be worse than mine. Better luck next season.

Most players and managers today consider Messi to be the GOAT. The Chile coach called Messi the GOAT a day after he missed the penalty in the final.

That is the respect he commands. You can live in your little world along with a few folks where Ronaldo is better than Messi.

For the world, Messi is better than Ronaldo and pretty much the GOAT.

I have great respect for Ronaldo and I agree that he is a better leader than Messi. Honestly, I am happy for him because this was his last chance to win an international trophy.

Portugal can't win the World Cup and he will be 35 in the next Euro, this was pretty much it.

Messi has taken his retirement back and he will have more opportunities of winning an international trophy than Ronaldo in the future.

Individually, Messi is superior to Ronaldo. The guy is a great goalscorer and a great playmaker; Ronaldo is a great goalscorer but not a great playmaker.

That is where the comparison ends.

Ronaldo fans can't even call him the better FK-taker anymore lol.

You don't even need to look at the statistics to see who is better. You just have to watch the game and anyone who has seen both Messi and Ronaldo will say that Messi is better. Unfortunately both people base their assumptions on stats and the number of goals scored. They hardly ever watch Spanish football.

If Messi never wins anything with Argentina then Ronaldo will go down as the more successful player. But Messi will still be a better player.

For the world? no, they voted 3 times for ronaldo over Messi.

...and you obviously didnt get my point did you, i'm talking about how people will see them in 10 years time or in the future. It will be based on stats and who won what.

As for there comparison now, there isnt much between them, i give the edge to Ronaldo because i dont think Messi would be such a success in the EPL, plus he also pays his taxes. ;-)

Messi is a choker. He failed in all the finals he played in. He cant be a goat

Messi has no spine. He won nothing with his argentinian team. He is a bottler. He had chances in the finals and blew them up

Messi was crap in the WC and WC final. Lets face it at the higgest event in football, he did absolutely nothing. He even balooned the ball over when he had one last chance. He missed penalty in the copa final and quit. He is a quitter. Lacks the fight.

And voted Messi 5 times over Ronaldo. So?

did get your point and I do not agree with it. They will look at stats and see Messi's goals + assists and all the trophies that he was won with Barcelona.

They will also see that for all his goals, Ronaldo could beat Messi to the La Liga title only once.

Yes by winning the Euro, Ronaldo has certainly made a case for himself as the better international player, but then people will realize that Messi has won the Golden Ball at the World Cup and has outperformed Ronaldo in International tournaments.

The PL point is moot as well. Players like Aguero, Torres, Silva, Mata, Fabregas etc. all came from La Liga and excelled in the PL.

They are technically inferior to Messi and not very physical either. Messi have literally everything in his locker to become an instant hit in the PL. Even Michu of all people had the best season of his career in the PL.

Messi won the player of the World Cup (although James deserved it ahead of him) and was clearly one of the best players in the tournament.

So when you say he was 'crap' in the World Cup, it shows your lack of credibility as far as this topic is concerned.

The race is not finished yet, so hold your pants.

...and i said this before as well, Ronaldo has time on his side Messi doesn't, competing with a monster like Ronaldo is getting to Messi, its the main reason he took a back seat to Suarez last season, he can not play week in, week out anymore to compete with Ronaldo. Ronnie is a fitness freak, he will play at the top level till atleast 35/36, till then expect more awards coming his way.

As for the EPL, every player is different, Torres went from sensational to absolute disaster just by switching clubs, it showed how Gerrad had a major impact on him just like Barca team has on Messi.
Fergie said it best
here, for me, is the difference. Messi is a Barcelona player.
“But Ronaldo could play for Stockport County and score a hat-trick. He has everything.

Messi is a great player, however Ronaldo has an edge.

Torres went from sensational to disaster not because he switched clubs, but because of his knee injury before the 2010 World Cup due to which he lost several yards of pace.

He was a disaster at the 2010 World Cup and he was a disaster at Liverpool in the 2010/2011 season till January.

He simply carried his post-injury poor form to Chelsea; he did NOT lose his form at Chelsea.

Fergie is biased because he coached Ronaldo into a legend. The opinion of Fergie or Guardiola on Ronaldo and Messi cannot be taken seriously because of bias. However, most of the neutral managers and players from other teams rate Messi higher than Ronaldo.

Ronaldo might beat Messi in terms of longevity, but he will never reach the peak of Messi.

He's won everything inside his comfort zone and at the same club. Ronaldo has done it in the same league as Messi, in the PL and has an international trophy.

He has a massive edge in that department.

Tbf, after the group stages, he was below par.

Real Madrid have only won one league title since Ronaldo's been there.

That's the point, I'd like to see him outside his comfort zone.

Come on, it's not like Ronaldo played for Blackburn Rovers in the PL or Granada in the La liga. He was surrounded by world class players at Manchester United and is surrounded by world class players at Madrid as well.

Which world class players did he play with at MU?

He had a midfield of Carrick (was very mediocre in those days), Flecthure, Anderson, Cleverly and Park.

Stop kidding yourself, Messi would be exposed in such a team.
