DUBAI: Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez says the International Cricket Council (ICC) should tweak its rules to ensure the 'doosra' remains part of the sport.

"Really happy to see leg spinners come into international cricket. But I still believe something should happen when it comes to the doosra," Hafeez said on the sidelines of the Pakistan Super League.

"Saeed Ajmal has given us a lot of excitement as well as Saqlain Mushtaq. It is one area ICC must look into. Some extension in the rules. Doosra should be a part of cricket, not taken away from it," he added.

Hafeez, a top order batsman and a handy off-spinner, has been reported for more than once in the past for his suspect bowling action and currently, he cannot bowl in ICC events.

Hafeez said he is not surprised by the rise of leg-spinners in world cricket and feels it's a great option to get wickets.

"This is one area that every team looks forward to. Having leg spinners in the team provides them with lots of excitement and options to get wickets," Hafeez said.

"Leg-spinners are always fascinating when it comes to cricket, starting from Abdul Qadir when he used to bowl his googlys it was a new thing in cricket and everyone just loved that. Then the legacy continued led by Anil Kumble from India, Shane Warne from Australia, Mushtaq Ahmad from Pakistan."

Since beating India in last year's Champions Trophy final, Pakistan have had a string of inconsistent performances.

They had recently lost the ODI series against New Zealand 0-5 but had won the T20I series against the same side last month.

Sri Lanka too defeated Pakistan 2-0 in a two-match Test series in October last year.

Asked about these losses, the former Pakistan skipper said it was the absence of key players due to injury that cost the side the embarrassing defeat against New Zealand.

"We missed some of our bowlers due to injuries like Usman Khan Shinwari. He is a rising star and he did very well for us against Sri Lanka in UAE," Hafeez said.

The off-spinning all-rounder said Pakistan will be a title contender in next year's World Cup because of their strong bowling unit, irrespective of the recent losses.

"We have a good bunch of players, bowlers in the team. Seamers are there -- Amir, Hasan Ali, Faheem is shaping very well who is an all-rounder. So we have the spark in the bowling, we just need a momentum to go into the 2019 World Cup playing abroad. Winning abroad will give us a lot of confidence," the 37-year-old said.

"We are leading into a very good team, we are shaping up very well. Everyone is very clear about their role. We know we have to get momentum outside Asia. That is a goal we really want to achieve."

Inconsistent Pakistan will be favourites at 2019 World Cup: Hafeez

Did they ban Doosra? As far I know, chucking is ban, not Doosra. In fact, I know 1 off spinner, who chucks selectively even while bowling conventional offie - caught multiple times in the act....

basically the debate is whether a doosra can be legally bowled or not?

I think, it can be.

When Saq started Doosra, it was early days of speed gun - still whatever I can recall, his doosra was MUCH slower, floating ball bowled with shoulders and his tricks were in the wrist & fingers. I genuinely believe apart from odd ones, Saq actually bowled doosra genuinely and he would have passed 15 degree at random test. And, apart from last few series, Saq used doosra as a surprise element, hardly bowling more than twice an over.

Later stages, first Ajmal started to make Doosra his stock ball - obviously it lost novelty for over use and become less effective, so he started to add pace ... from his elbow, that's darting. Finally, he went to County and bowled 500+ overs there with that action, which British establishment won't ever allow (nothing else in it - they won't have allowed their own player either. After losing almost everything, at least British has preserved this reputation - fair play). ICC favored him even in T20 WC'14, didn't call - but with that action both Ajmal & PCB were dumb enough to go the County.

Hafeez is a cheat and quite thick skinned as well in that regard - repeated offender. He can bowl proper off-spin with round arm action, but that made him worse than our Mosaddek, so he deliberately started to chuck, even for conventional off spin and decided to test ICC's patience - they called the bluff eventually against SRL. MoHa doesn't need any technical assistance - he can bowl perfect off-spin (without much spin) from tomorrow and no one will call him, like the CT final - which obviously went for 14 in only over, and that's the truth of his bowling mantra.

"Leg-spinners are always fascinating when it comes to cricket, starting from Abdul Qadir when he used to bowl his googlys it was a new thing in cricket and everyone just loved that.

Is he implying Qadir was the first Pakistani bowler to bowl a googly or are his words lost in translation.

Does anyone bowl the doosra anymore? Or did the art die with Saqlain.. and Ajmal

Exactly- fair doosra is A- Ok by the rules.

Same as any other delivery.

We don't allow quicks to chuck their fast bouncer or swing bowlers to use a bottle top. Do Doosra has to stay within the laws of the game too.

It makes those rare bowlers who can genuinely bowl a legal one all the more special. Murali, Saqlain... Any others who never got banned/warned?

In my view it’s near impossible to bowl a doosra without chucking. However, a carrom ball which is more to do with the fingers can definetly be bowled within the limit.

Due to strict action from ICC, Saeed Ajmal was removed from ending careers of many batsman with his chucking.
Pragyan Ojha too was having questionable action ...BCCI selectors unofficially removed him from pecking order by not selecting him.

Rules is same for all... bowl any variety of the delivery within the rules of the game #simple

Doosra is still part of cricket, so not sure what Mohammad Hafeez is talking about. ICC banned illegal delivery of doosra, not the doosra itself.
