Dropped catches & 108 by Labuschagne takes Australia to 274/5 at Stumps (Day 1) of 4th Test vs India

Looking at the commentary from Cricbuzz, it seems not a batsman's paradise but some assistance is available for the bowlers. The quality, experience of bowlers matters a lot. Unfortunately, India had to put this weak attack. But just a gut feeling which says one of these two - Labu or smith - might be dismissed under 75 from Aus team score.

A little bit of movement in the air but only for Takhur at this point. Movement in the air is easy to negotiate if it's wide and in one direction. The pitch, on the other hand, isn't doing much.

Have never seen an Australian team bat with such a scared defensive low run rate. The Indian bowlers and fielders have really gotten in their heads

Lol what. They’re at almost 3 per over. That’s pretty standard for test cricket esp first session of first day

Test cricket is played 90% in the head 10% conditions, ind could have bowled Geoff boycotts mum & aus will dead bat her!!

Need a fielder on offside boundry due to inexperience attack

Apparently is going to reverse swing “it” for us

Bowling now.

Why is india playing 4 quicks? It’s beyond me. Should have played Kuldeep. Would have been a handful and made some chances. This isn’t even some fast bowling paradise wicket or conditions

Looking at this Indian playing 11, this is not even a contest.. India should have conceded this match even before it started

Kuldeep would have been a good pick here, i still remember the ball he bowled to babar azam in WC 19 match, i was there I watched it live it was magically delivery, i was heart broken.

I am baffled as to why he isn’t playing. Maybe this Washington guy is good. Never seen him bowl.

Meh Sundar is a defensive option for even T20s and here he is playing as the lead spinner. Doesnt even get to bowl for his state side I think outside of T20s

Guys have some shame please.

Either discuss the match or get out.

I am sick of your childish fighting.

Sorry for channeling my inner Steve Smith there guys...

The pitch has flattened out and Smith is in full control

His FC record is good actually, but Gabba is really not the place for finger spinners, that too India is bowling first. Bats decent as well - IND is basically playing with 3 specialist pace bowlers and two bowling all-rounders. I think, if the wicket was a little drier, IND probably would have gone with Kuldeep over Thakur.

No idea guess Gabba’s rep..

Good batting here they are making sure Sundar doesn’t become out x-factor

Lunch - probably Aussie morning - two down and two inform batsmen still intact at first lunch. But, IND did control the scoring rate.

We have packed the team with batting till no.8 to ensure that we could draw the test match. Smart ploy by Kaptaan Rahane. He doesn't want his captaincy to lose the undefeated streak.

Shared session I think but advantage Australia from here

Hoping the same!

Siraj has been impressive with the new bowl in this series. He is a long term prospect for us, can replace Umesh or Shami in a longer run.

In Bumrah and Siraj, we have two excellent future prospects.

Wasn't a bad effort from the Indian rookie bowlers to be pitted against the Aussie giants.

Obviously, it's slightly tilting towards Australia at this point; however, a quick wicket or two will make it wide open again.

Good game by both sides so far.

Long back, I think Benaud & IChappel were discussing about toss tactics - if you put opponents in, unless you take 3 wickets in first session, over 85% cases, you won't win the game (but might not lose either). Here IND lost the toss, therefore had no options, but still that data is significantly indicative. It was Benaud's time, means that stats was of at least 12-15 years ago, but I think that stats is more skewed these days.

In that regard, odds are heavily stacked against IND here even for saving the game and that team is missing like 7 starters and couple of back-ups as well, therefore I don't think they'll compete with Aussies in coming days, but first morning is shared.

For sure.

In Bumrah, Ishant, Siraj, Shami and Yadav, india have 5 very good options they can rotate around. I think Bhuvaneshwar’s time is up though so won’t include him in the list.

How come they are scared of trundlers Siraj yet they smashed around a world class New Zealand attack last year? I think it's a mental issue at this point.

IND will miss Bumrah & the spin pair here, once the Kookaburra gets old. Best case is to get AUS 4 down, at least one of these two before 35th over and then keeping scoring in check till 2nd ball. But, I think Indian pacers have done more than expected. In reverse series in India, I hope Aussies will make IND bat 6 times, may be .... in 4 Tests.

Bhuvi will be considered only for T20 format. He played his last test match 3 years ago.

Yeah.

It doesn't make sense, but I'm just getting the feeling that something incredible is going to happen this match. Hopefully that isn't a Smith triple and something more in India's direction :jimmy

I have always rated sunder's batting quite high. But debuting in Brisbane is as extreme as it gets.

Indians playing with 5 bowlers debuting. Yes, I know Indians bounced back in the last two tests, but they had Bumrah/Ashwin/Jadeja at least.

India has no chance in this test. Smith is super lucky to get this attack for Aus team when Aus looks in trouble.

Never say never. We have got 6 tests in England soon.

And a WT20 post that. So, I think we will see Bhuvi in that tournament. In tests, Bumrah, Shami, Ishant, Siraj and Yadav are the ones to look forward to alongside Ashwin, Jadeja and Pandya(if he bowls).

Yeah, he is a good no.7 batting prospect but is debuting so not sure how well he will do. He is better than what Jadeja was with bat when he debuted back in 2013.

Sirah reminds me off, Mohd Sami similar action and a very good bowling action he has. Still need alot maturity and experience.

Not sure, why they are trying leg - trap. A tactics used long back on Australia for the bounce (no, not talking about body line), but leg trap mean bowler is taking out most of other moods of dismissals. And, it’s not that bowlers are missing line - that fielder at 45 was tactically placed for Siraj.

Bhai....Sami when he started off in 2001 or so was express pace....I thot at the time he and Aktar would be the new pace duo that would dazzle, siraj is nowhere near mo sami ....but could stil improve

If they can restrict the Aussies for less than 500, then it is a remarkable feat by the Indian bowlers.

Bhuvi is a damn good option in Sa, Eng and Nz. He has a pretty good record s in these conditions.
Also he avgs 30 with the bat in away conditions, complete package.
My bowling limeup in england will be
Bumrah
Ishant
Bhuvi
Pandya/Jadeja
Ashwin

India on top here with Smith wicket. This could work for India none of these Aussies have played these bowlers so it could bring trouble for Aussies

What the hell. Man.
You need to grab any chance this bowling lineup gives.
Also Marnus has been super lucky throughout this series.

And we were blaming 17 yr old Naseem Shah that he will get injured. Pakistani bowlers may not take wickets but they don’t break down like this😂

The Aus commentators were finally agreeing that the hard quarantines are taking their toll.

Short mid-wicket for an offie is probably a regulation field, but they definitely tried to get Smith out that way. Without that drop, India would have been on driving seat now.

Lot of people quipping about decimation of the bowling or similar. Makes sense if you compare the names on the sheet of XIs submitted by both teams.

However, I would be surprised if that happens without a Warner who fires. AUS have been under enormous pressure and have seemed to second-guess their own game at times.

Pressure stemming from: expectations of winning at home, Kohli less IND hence the idea of sweeping aside IND reinforced in their minds, unexpected grit and resilience being shown, unable to “express” themselves or channel their expletive-ridden vitriol and the methodical (strategic) approach by IND when bowling/fielding have left them uncertain.

AUS have seemed to be playing the opposition instead of the ‘ball’ for large parts of this series. Unless Marnus or Steve go big here, would be very difficult for them to get a big score someone else randomly stepping up notwithstanding.

Makes one question the judgement of playing half fit Warner in the previous Test too, but the desperation has been evident. IND have been smarter, playing fit people even if partially fit individuals could have been risked further.

So then, is it already a mental issue? If they collapse softly here it may well be indicative of it. Lack of conviction in stroke play was obvious over the first few games together with soft dismissals. Would have thought that Marnus and Steven would have tried to lay down the marker in normal circumstances once they had gotten their bearings.

Regarding IND’s batting, as most of the player changes have been about IND’s bowling expect this unit to fire more or less as much as expected. Think with this being the final Test and a depleted XI overall, they may actually show even more intent and play their game.

Most people in team are stroke players it appears, especially with Agarwal having replaced Vihari but correct me if zi am wrong.
