Egyptians shooting themselves in the foot?

The liberal Egyptians are in a bind. They have to choose between a military dictatorship and a democracy that elects Islamists who promptly try to become dictators themselves.

The Muslim Brotherhood overreached after winning the elections. If they had been patient and worked with the liberals to strengthen democracy, there was a chance their government would have survived.

The army wouldn't have let it happen. No chance.

It is possible that you are correct. However, the excuse the Army used for the crackdown was the public demonstrations (in which the liberals participated) against the MB government after they passed the changes to the constitution that would have benefitted the MB government.

It was just an excuse, really. They could have used any reasoning and it wouldn't have mattered.

On the topic of the liberals, this farce of a govt. has been quite difficult to swallow for them, understandably. Any opposition is jailed/prosecuted for just about any reason with a nobody standing in the last 'election' against Sisi.

The liberals are a very small segment of society though. Much of the general populace have brought into the brainwashing by the Egyptian govt. which essentially makes it clear that it's necessary for the army to run the country. And they're tightening their grip... Though the economic situation could someday lead to their downfall, who knows.

I agree with your assessment, you are right on all counts. Really feel very sad for the Egyptians, many of them had so much hope a few years ago.

Egypt court sentences 75 to death in 2013 sit-in case

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s state-run media says a court has sentenced 75 people to death, including top figures of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group, for their involvement in a 2013 sit-in.

Saturday’s decision in Cairo Criminal Court will now be referred to the Grand Mufti — the country’s top theological authority — for his non-binding opinion on the sentences. He usually approves the court’s decision.

Sentencing for more than 660 others was set for Sept. 8, according to state-run Al-Ahram news website.

The case involves 739 defendants, including the Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie and photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid. Charges range from murder to damaging public property.

The 2013 sit-in supported former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi who was militarily ousted following mass protests against his divisive one-year rule. Morsi hailed from the Brotherhood. The sit-in was violently dispersed.
