Ashwin went to Bharat Arun to work on his bowling. His technical adjustments were made after understanding a lot of theory.
Kohli went to SRT but how can we be sure he didn't consult anyone else to get the technical details right? If I remember correctly, Kohli had an outrageous series in Aus (tests) and then scratched around in ODIs for a year before regaining form. Its too speculative to say who exactly helped Kohli make the changes.
Yes, I agree that coaches should identify and work on players but ultimate responsibility lies on players. Maybe the player is just unable to get it right. Maybe he is not trying hard enough. Maybe he is trying but its not working so he is resorting to some hacks.
A coach is rated by his inputs to players. Agreed we may not know who is good and who isn't but just cos someone doesn't have international experience doesn't make him a bad coach.
Sanjay Bangar was with Kings XI and got positive feedback all round. He was appointed for Indian team and got positive feedback. Ashwin credits him for turning around his batting in public when there was no need for him to do so.
So what's the more likely conclusion?
The only reason I questioned Bangar because it's Rahane we are talking about. He is a talented, hard working lad so we can be pretty sure that lack of trying or his capability isn't the issue here.
I am aware of Bangar's stint with Punjab but let's be honest here, he wouldnt have been changing the techniques of players in a T20 tournament. And it was Shastri who brought Bangar, nothing works without Sifarish in India.
He might have helped Ashwin with his batting but then it shouldn't hide his failure to sort Rahane's technical deficiencies.
I am not dissing Bangar because he wasn't a great batsman but solely because two years is a long time to identify and correct any technical inadequacy.
