England (354 & 170/2) defeat Pakistan (304 & 216) by 8 wickets to clinch a historic 3-0 series sweep

The end is nigh for Pakistan - a humiliating 0-3 loss beckons and only a miracle can now save Babar and Co from defeat

Think we will be done in the first hour here…

Pretty embarassimg 3 0 coming up and on top English have treated us like 3rd class citezans and taking the Micky which we deserve.

I actually thought we would give them a good game

55 runs

8 wickets

Day 4 wicket

Might as well give it one last fight. You just never know with this beautiful game

I think that England will lose some wickets but get home in the end.

The chase has already had its back broken by the mad mini session with Crawley & Duckett blasting it around in the fading light.

If there were still 150 runs to get on the final day then things might be panning out differently.

Takeaways for Pakistan...

Batsmen failing to convert. Babar one of the main offenders but he's not alone. Plenty of players go through that issue. Recommend changing the way they net (net whole sessions), more FC cricket, increase fitness or find a way to conserve concentration.

Shakeel made some nice runs. One to keep for the future.

Imam did ok v a good attack in both a high scoring match (where he DID convert) and in a low scoring match where tough chase runs were needed. People will find something to criticise him for here but again, a rare opener to keep imo.

Abrar bowled well. You've found a leggy for Asian conditions, and who knows, maybe he can play away too.

Importance of grooming some fast bowlers in FC cricket was highlighted. It's one thing to have guys who can bowl fast in the PSL but quite another thing to have guys who can bowl 20 to 25 overs and put together an entire spell in different match circumstances.

NEED an allrounder. Faheem was really poor. As were ALL the other bits n pieces guys. Need to beg, order or convince Shadab to play more FC cricket...

Rizwan was not in good form. I'm not sure why, his white ball runs show me he can certainly play. It's much harder after keeping all day though. Shift him to open? or just hope he regains form. I wouldn't drop him just yet. Too good for that, potentially.

that's awful

0 3 against England in Pakistan and not even a victory in the final game
that being said Pakistan is on par with Zimbabwe and Bangladesh so this shouldn't be surprising

Abrar’s economy rate in the last two tests has been a bit like the diesel prices going up every week in the UK

:)) that’s right. He has been an effective wicket taker but they have been scoring a lot of runs off him. His captain needs to remember that he is basically a debutant.

Dont loose hope , anything can happen in test cricket. Get ducket and stokes wicket quickly , things might be spiced up

Doomsday the end is nigh, Pakistan's moment of Eng home summer 1999:nasser if they realize

This 3 - 0 defeat can be boon , if Pakistan Management realize the issues and start a long term plan.

The chances of this altering Pakistani cricket is hopeful at best.

Talent and insha'Allah.

Pakistani ka shikwa

Even you dig up the pitch that will not happen :))

They could throw a hand grenade and give Pakistanis JCBs and England still canter

I've really enjoyed the Barmy Army.

Usually very annoying but they've been some light relief at, checks time, 05:14.

Sensodyne for a tooth-pulling excercise?.

Babar has the reflexes of a zimmerframe user

England in a hurry for getting back to UK for Xmas shopping

Pope: Stokes has made his intentions clear
Ollie Pope speaking ahead of day four...

"I think Stokes makes his intentions clear, we will be playing some positive shots for the next 55 runs.

"Stokesy was having a bit of a mad one, everyone was padded up, and he was going in at three but wasn't! We wanted to finish it last night, but light got in the way.

"It was amazing, it's been a special week for Rehan. It's put some perspective on it for us, seeing an 18-year-old looking like he is playing in his backyard. The look on his face has been awesome."

first thing first , Moyo and Saqlain to be kicked out immediately and ban from NCA

Just going through the motions towards the end of match presentation really.

England will get a rude awakening in India where the hosts can pile up the runs.

This has been like a county side playing a university.

The gulf in quality quite apparent. Except they lack a PhD for captain. Quite the opposite.

First of all, thanks to Allah, I made Qurbani of players.

Pakistan has had a large number of capitulations. But this, started by losing on the most benign pitch in the history of cricket, is at the very top of the pantheon of Pakistani absurdism.

Congratulations England for whitewash Pakistan in Pakistan .shameful performance by Pakistan

Dumbfounding, embarrassing, utterly predictable.

England have been good to watch in the last year, this was just a procession

ENGLAND WIN BY 8 WICKETS
It is Duckett who finishes it off. He cuts a length ball through deep point for four.

England have knocked off the 55 runs needed over right in quick fashion and seal a 3-0 series whitewash in Pakistan, only the fifth Test match and third series England have one in Pakistan.

That means Ben Stokes has just lost one match since he was appointed as captain, and they end the year on a high.

Presidential security for an England coronation.

None of this series makes any sense!

All the whinnying and whining for England to your to be utterly humiliated

Still remember a young Azhar Ali making his debut more than a decade back. Those were gloomy times for Pakistan and he provided a bit of hope. He’s had a long and productive career for his country. Enjoy your retirement, Azhar.

Not winning a Test is not that big a deal. But unable to draw a Test is definitely a bad thing.

Who was the English Cricket fan whose parents are standing in the presentation ceremony ? Good gesture by PCB to have them at the presentation ceremony.

Ducket: I wanted to be there at the end last night

Ben Duckett speaking on Sky Sports Cricket...

"Going to sleep last night, I wanted to be there at the end. I am very happy. Its fitting Stokes was there in the end, and I know he wanted to go past Baz as the all-time six hitter. Zak tried to be positive, after him getting 0, hitting the first ball for four set the tone.

"I am very happy. I tried to stick to my game. I was disappointed in the last game, but I am happy I struck to my strength.

"Abrar is a good bowler, but we gifted him some wickets in the first innings. The rate we scored at was good. The mindset of this team, it's easy to come in to.

Ben Stokes:

Perfect (sums up the Test series). We got a process in which we want to play, the challenge is to play on different kinds of pitches and we stuck to our gameplan and adapted really well with bat and ball. Everyone delivered. Lot spoken about the way we bat, but our bowling stood up as well. It comes down to belief. The belief we have on the team in what we were trying to do and it resonates around everybody, it's unbelievable and to be able to lead the group full of confidence, it's amazing. Every person stood up at some point and put on some kind of match winning performance. Harry Brook has been a treat to watch, the calmness and belief he has at such a young age is incredible. The confidence and belief he's (Rehan Ahmed) got to do what he does, he is not a finished article, but it is seriously exciting for England. I won't forget that cap presentation. That experience itself was incredible. His Dad was so emotional and proud and I'm sure his Mum would be incredibly proud back home as well. We knew what cricket means to Pakistan and what it meant to Pakistan for us to be here, we have got the best fans in the world and also for the people in Pakistan to come out and support and walk off with the reception we have on every ground, a tremendous experience.

Babar Azam:

Disappointing as a team. We were not good enough to fight back but, credit to England they played really well. First innings we lost back to back wickets, we were good in patches but not good for longer periods and that cost us. Our bowlers fought back very well, but unfortunately that wasn't good enough. Lot of positives in the series and we will carry that to the next series and we will also discuss where we fell short and correct that.

Well that was over quicker than expected. I was looking forward to listening on the drive to work!

Congrats to Stokes and his boys. This is one of the very best England victories in all my decades of listening to cricket. In four weeks they have won more tests in Pakistan than all the England sides of the past combined.

And they did it without a torrent of runs from Root and heroics from Stokes! Harry Brook has emerged as potentially an England great. Duckett has advanced. Pope has #3 nailed down. Teenage sensation Rehan had a brilliant debut. Robinson has continued his world-class start to test cricket. The evergreen Anderson turned in another fine away performance. Wood is hurling 97 mph thunderbolts.

Bazball 9 - RoW 1. The renaissance of England in tests after the wrecked Ashes tour and depression in WI has been little short of staggering. Back in the spring, Ashley Giles said you can change the coach, change the skipper, change me, but you can’t change the system. Well Silverwood, Root and Giles were replaced by McCullum, Stokes and Key, and the difference is night and day.

Add to all that the T20 WC win and the 50 over WC win and these are great days for an Ingerlund supporter. Maybe the greatest days of all.

Now we just have to get the Ashes back….

Beautiful post and fully agree.

This series exposes a lot more about how poor Pakistan are as opposed to how good England are.

Easily one of the poorest Pakistan test sides ever. The last competitive test team Pakistan had was in 2016.

Robert specifically on Ashley Giles, he is such a wheely bin of a man. That is a very telling quotation above from him & on the back of his trainwreck of a tenure he will not be enjoying these far more successful times.

Giles was interviewed on a podcast during the summer whilst England were winning, and he was strongly questioning both the new positive approach to red ball cricket in England and the consistency-first selection policy. He came across as deeply political and extremely bitter, and it sounded that he did not like being usurped by a younger alpha male type like McCullum, who is of course the polar opposite of someone like Giles in every way.

I remember during his career when Giles came under fire — which was often, because he was a bog average cricketer who was not Test class — his main priority (over the team) was trying to get one over on his critics in the media with his performances, and to continue these little petty personal battles that he always seems to have ongoing with various people in the game.

Giles imo will have been hoping that England come unstuck in every game here, which we have not, and he will be quietly seething at their wonderful achievements under his replacement.

"We had to work incredibly hard across all three Tests. Pakistan has played some really good cricket throughout, though the scorecard may not suggest it, but they were worthy opponents," says England head coach Brendon McCullum

Yeah.

I give him a bit of credit. Giles did bowl to the last England win in Pakistan. He got us over the line in one of the nail biters of the ‘05 Ashes. The great Richie Benaud gave him kudos for doing the 1000 runs /100 wickets test double, but that has been devalued by the sheer volume of test cricket. Reman will power past him.

He was not an effective manager at international level. Well out of his league.

“Away, slight man” to quote the Bard of Avon. He can’t hold England back any longer.

Come to think of it James, Giles once had a right whinge about being passed over for the far more combative and effective Swann.

Well played England, breath of fresh air to test cricket. the ashes will surely be explosive if they also Bazball there.
Brook and rehan are the ones for the future. Esp Rehan, if he turns it big, he will add a whole new dimension to eng bowling attack.
for Pak, good find in Abrar . Shafiq and shakeel were good. Good luck vs NZ.
With the Gabba test finishing in 2 days, am now searching for things to fill the unrelenting passage of time:yk3

Yes, Ashley is very fragile and self important.

Threw his teddies out of the pram and retired from international cricket during the 06 Ashes because he didn’t like the criticism of him when he dropped a crucial catch off Ponting and was tired of people asking for him to be dropped in favour of the superior SLA Monty (who had a far better average, econ rate & strike rate than him…)

Just a political suit who belongs in our past.

Monty, that was it. Not Swann.

England a few over rate deductions away from being in the running for the WTC Final :(

Unlike Pakistan, where over rates have always been absolute garbage, the over rates in India are usually excellent and 90 overs are completed without even using the extra half hour sometimes.

Babar Azam speaking in a presser:

"I am disappointed as a captain. We made mistakes, that's why we weren't able to win"

"At the same time, we need to appreciate England team, the way they played throughout"

"I don't think there is any captaincy pressure on me, in fact it's an honor. I tried to give my best every time possible"

"Being a captain, I am here to defend our performance. I know we made mistakes, but we have a new bunch of players who need some time to transform into a strong team"

"Injury issues unfortunately haunted us throughout the series"

"We missed our main fast bowlers which might have cost us the series. There is a lot of cricket around the world so it's hard to switch formats in limited time"

"Currently, our team is young. We got some really good players in the side including Saud, Shan, Agha and Abrar. We need to back this team and build them for the longer run"

"Doors are open for everyone. We select team according to the situation. If we fail to produce results, then people say a lot of things"

Can Babar continue as skipper? General view is that he is tactically inept.

Surely he would have to step down.

Getting whitewashed at home is an absolutely untenable result.

England used to sack their captain in the middle of the series (and again would sack whomever the new unfortunate captain was at the end of the series) when this was happening :)) :))

The Summer of Four Captains, 1988. 23 players used in five tests as WI won 0-4.

Gatting - appointed by TCCB Chairman, secured the only non-loss of the series, then vetoed by a MCC mandarin.

John Emburey - why? - for two tests

Chris Cowdrey - because his godfather was TCCB Chairman. Played one test, scored no runs, took no wickets, dumped when England lost.

Gooch - last man standing after Gower was dropped.

Dark memories of the shambolic late-eighties TCCB.

Congratulations England. Pakistan were totally humiliated in this Test.

England played the better aggressive cricket so deserve their 3-0 series win.

Big problems for Pak in Test cricket- Babar needs to be fired as captain and need a new revamp of the team especially the blowing department which has performed abysmally.

He has been using the same excuse since he became captain - someone ask him how many players do we actually need to back, for how long and when will they actually mature and start delivering???? Or is it that he is just a useless captain who needs to acknowledge we have a poor team, poor selection, poor coaching and poor captaincy!!!! For the past decade we just seem to have a young team !!!

Skipper Babar Azam has no intention of giving up the Pakistan captaincy despite overseeing a first-ever 3-0 Test series whitewash at home, saying that leading the side was “a matter of honour”.

Pakistan lost to England on Tuesday in the third and final Test in Karachi by eight wickets, after going down in the first two matches by 74 runs in Rawalpindi and 26 in Multan.

It was also the first time Pakistan have lost four Tests on the trot, having been beaten by Australia in Lahore in March.

Asked if he would quit the captaincy to concentrate on batting, Azam told a news conference he still enjoyed the challenge.

“Captaincy is a matter of honour for me. I will do whatever best I can for my country and for myself,” he said.

“I enjoy it more when under pressure and it doesn’t affect my batting.”

But Azam acknowledged his disappointment at the result of the series.

“We could not apply ourselves in the series,” said Azam, who suffered his sixth defeat in 16 Tests as skipper.

“I keep Pakistan first and the rest after that. So that motive and my aim are paramount,” he said.

He also backed the players and team management, saying he was confident they would bounce back.

“I will defend other players as captain. I will take that front on … I will be there for others.”

But he urged his teammates to rise to the challenge.

“Coaches give us plans and we have to execute that. It’s for the players to step up,” he said.

Azam, however, rued the loss through the injury of key bowlers — specifically Shaheen Shah Afridi, who missed every game of the series, and Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah, who were out of the last two.

“We were unfortunate that our main fast bowlers were not fit and the new players we played could not execute the way we wanted,” he said.

Pakistan next face New Zealand in two Tests, with the first in Karachi beginning December 26.

In what universe is Shan considered young?

England completed a historic 3-0 clean sweep over Pakistan inside 40 minutes on the fourth day of the final Test in Karachi.

Needing 55 more runs, England took only 11.1 overs to reach their target of 167.

Ben Duckett ended 82 not out, while Ben Stokes was unbeaten on 35, the two left-handers sharing an unbroken partnership of 73.

England, on their first Test tour of Pakistan in 17 years, become the first visiting team to win three matches in a series in this country.

It also caps a year in which England have undergone a remarkable transformation under captain Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum - this is their ninth win in 10 matches since the pair took charge.

Attention will now turn to next summer, when England will attempt to regain the Ashes from Australia.

Stokes' side play two Tests against New Zealand in February, then complete their Ashes preparations with a one-off match against Ireland in June. The white-ball team has limited-overs tours of South Africa and Bangladesh in the early part of next year.

Before this tour, England had managed only two Test wins away to Pakistan in 30 attempts across 61 years. They have now won three in three weeks.

Not only that, they have secured their first series win over Pakistan outside of the UK for 22 years and ended a run of three successive away series defeats stretching back to the beginning of 2021.

This is also only the fourth time England have taken a clean sweep in an away series of three Tests or more.

What makes the achievement all the more remarkable - this is one of England's greatest ever away wins - is the turmoil they were in at the beginning of the year.

When England were hammered in Hobart at the end of an Ashes humbling, then beaten in Grenada to tumble to a series defeat by West Indies, the idea they would win six of seven home Tests then win 3-0 in Pakistan was beyond fanciful.

Yet, under the inspirational leadership of Stokes and McCullum, England are becoming one of the most feared Test sides in the world.

Their form has come too late to reach next year's World Test Championship final, but the clash with Australia is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticipated Ashes series for some time.

Sweep sealed on landmark tour

This series will live long in the memory, not only for England's landmark return to Pakistan or the surprise scoreline, but for the thrilling cricket played.

England's victory on a flat pitch in Rawalpindi, when they piled up 506-4 on day one then bowled Pakistan out in the final moments of the fifth day, was one of their all-time great wins. It was almost matched for drama by the 26-run win in the second Test in Multan.

This third Test was a new challenge - England lost the toss on a pitch more suited to spin bowling, circumstances that have often been their undoing in the past.

Still, they pulled off their most emphatic win in a match notable for the emergence of 18-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, the youngest man to play a Test for England, who took 5-48 in Pakistan's second innings.

Prior to that, England were put in a strong position by Harry Brook's third century of the series - the 23-year-old has given the selectors a tough decision to make when Jonny Bairstow returns from a broken leg.

Across the tour, Ollie Robinson has confirmed his status as one of the world's premier seam bowlers - this is the first Test England have won without either of James Anderson or Stuart Broad since June 2007, 15 years and 197 matches ago.

It was also a successful return to Test cricket for opener Duckett, recalled after six years out of the side.

Whereas Duckett led England's frantic charge to complete the chase in fading light on Monday evening, Tuesday morning was more measured, even if his sweeping still had the scoring rate at above five runs an over.

Stokes, tied with McCullum on 107 sixes - the most in Test cricket - tried all he could to break the record of the England coach.

It was Duckett who hit the winning runs, meaning Stokes' next opportunity for the record-breaking maximum will come in New Zealand - the country of his birth and McCullum's homeland.

Reaction:

England captain Ben Stokes: "It has been perfect. We have a process of how to play but the challenge for us this series has been the surfaces. But we stuck to our gameplan and adapted really well, be it with bat or ball.

"It all comes down to belief. The belief I have in taking the guys out in the field with me."

England opener Ben Duckett, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was fitting that Ben Stokes was there. I know he wanted to hit a six to win and go past Baz [McCullum]. He wanted it bad."

Former England spinner Alex Hartley on Test Match Special: "Other teams will have to take this on - be more aggressive and ruthless. Stokes and McCullum have shown it works.

"This England team are changing cricket. They're playing every ball and hitting it into the gaps."

There are no alternatives. I think it is okay for him to continue.

The resources he had were fairly poor: Zahid, Mohammad Ali, Faheem. We played the series with a two-man bowling attack. Tactics do not work when you have no talent at your disposal

England too good for Pak simple as that. Dani Kaneria is spot on in calling out Babar Azam for what he is. I have always said that Babar simply can not be compared to a match winner like Kohli. Not possible to win a test without even one world class batsman. We will have the usual post mortem leading to nothing. At least the series was completed peaceful without any mishaps or cheating type allegations.
