Congrats Poms & what an innings by the Kiwi😜

Ashes is alive and now I believe England will win it 3-1

Australia should have won this. Every crucial decision should be reviewed by the third umpire. But what can you expect from old babas of ICC.

Reminiscent of Saqlain fumbling and missing the run out and then umpire not giving a clear bat pad of Walsh.

What an innings from stokes. Right up there with Kusal Perera's and Brian Lara's.

Australia choked under pressure, its a rarity. That Nathan Lyon's missed chance of run out was just further proof of aussies choking.

Australia was tactically very poor especially cummins and Hazlewood. Instead of bowling round the wicet they were bowling over the wicket to Leach. THey need Starc to remove tailenders.

true but Aus have nicked enough over the years so am not going to feel sorry for them, should've used their reviews more wisely.

74 run last wicket stand, of which Stokes got 73.

Look at Stokes drinking the moment in. This is Redemption.

Stokes breaking heats of Newzealnders in WC and now the Aussies by winning from improbable situations.

Sorry to burst your bubble but your england is totally overrated they are about to go down to Austraila who are without Steve Smith and won the toss and git to bowl first in ideal seaming conditions
With Smith back next game England already demoralized i struggle to see anything other then 4-0 or at worse 3-1 in Australia favor

Sorry to remind you that you spoke too early. No team with Stokes in it can be overrated. England will win the Ashes now.

Not sure why Aussies are not trying to make no 11 play with bat. Short ball won’t scare tailenders these days, not in this situation

Tactics were baffling to say the least. Punter was screaming yorker from the commentary box. They were bowling aimlessly. As an Indian fan i feel for Aussie fans. We have been doing the same with tailenders. Bowling stupidly.

He pitched the ball like almost a foot outside the leg stump and they went for review. That was stupid.

Mamoon

Remember I told you this series will establish Stokes as an ATG?

He is well on his way.

Well, that's the best I've seen since I started following cricket again four years ago. Nothing compares to test cricket. The art of shepherding a tail-ender carried to the max. It also puts England's WC win in better light.

On par with Perera's 4th innings knock. He was literally toying with the bowling even with every men on the fence.

He pitched the ball like almost a foot outside the leg stump and they went for review. That was stupid.

Yeh it was so stupid even commies immediately mentioned its outside leg, that right there lost them the match..

But still respect to aussies for coming back hard at 2 runs remaing if not for blunders of umpiring

What a match and what a sublime innings from Ben Stokes.

I'ts games like these that reassure me about the future of test cricket. Cricket aficionados like us will never stop following the game in this format.

I don’t even care that England won.

What an innings by Stokes.

Probably, the greatest Test Match and Test Innings we’ll witness in our lifetime.

Another team struggling to nip out tailender. As an Indian fan i welcome Australia to the club.

Nowhere near indian level, here most balls were played by stokes alone and hence bowlers didnt remove tail.
In indian cases we have seen earlier, they give runs to each and every single tails like rabad, lyon, broad, stark and so many names i cant even remember

Stokes has shown he can eliminate the ego (which he did so thoroughly in the WC too), and then he begins to fire. With the ball, he is not an immense wicket taker but he gives and gives and gives until there is no more left to give. As horrendous as this side have been in tests this summer, Stokes has pulled them along, even more so than Smith on the opposing side. This is why I always say stats matter so little, because if he look at his bowling figures he looks mediocre at best, yet we all know that when he is on, he breaks partnerships. With the bat, again, the numbers are good but not special, yet again, when he is on, he takes the game in breath taking fashion.

This is what all rounders have always been, capable of changing the game in more ways than one.

The greatest inning of all time from the greatest A/R in history since Imran Khan and Ian Botham!! in a high pressure game with his back against the wall, I have never seen quite like it! god bless Ben Stokes and god bless England!! Indians butrt hurt :))) :)))

Did you found "Aladdin Ka Chirag" from somewhere, early this year?

This is better than the WC win.

Don't believe in the honours system but Arise Sir Ben Stokes!

This feels a thousand times bigger and better than winning the World Cup.

I feel slightly embarrassed having Sir Alistair Cook as a knight, when Sir Ben Stokes has achieved so much more in the last six weeks.

He’s talented, but his greatness comes from the intensity levels he gets caught in.

His 2 from 60 balls yesterday was a superb feat - he was clearly incensed at how he threw away his wicket in the First Innings.

But the level of intensity today? I’ve only ever seen that sustained for such long periods in Diego Maradona.

Just astonishing.

Congratulations shaz619 Robert James Junaids for winning one of the best matches of recent times.

You guys are lucky to have a player like Stokes and Archer.

One of the all time great test matches. One of the greatest fightbacks in history. And Stokes one of the all time great innings. A pleasure to have been around to watch.

I Think James was there so a great day in his life to witness that.

Yessssss!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the greatest test matches of all time, and one of the great, great Ashes innings. He bowled 24 overs yesterday too.

Not just great Ashes innings but also the great test innings of all time. Congrats. :inti

By the way, the decision to exclude Mitchell Marsh cost Australia dear.

All three quicks were overbowled as a result and lost their bite first, then their accuracy.

One of the greatest test matches ever, what a season Stokes is having; his legacy has already been etched in English cricketing history; now it's all about cementing his greatness. Glad the series is finally alive, Jofra played his part to and we need to use him a lot more carefully and intelligently in the remaining games

Any fan would love to see a player playing such an innings for their country. I am jealous India is not having a player with such mental strength playing for India.

Leach didn't play many deliveries. But in retrospect they should have attacked his stumps rather than bowling bouncers which he easily ducked.

They missed starc he is good at cleaning tailenders.

Congratulations England! You deserve this. Nothing against this. Ashes alive.

Ben Stokes has arguably played one of the greatest test innings of all time.

Congrats bro. :inti

Awesome Stokes.....simply brilliant.....
How did he do that again...….
Never give up as he said!!!!

What a Test match we are watching!!!! And what an innings by Stokes!!!!

The thrill of a quality Test match simply can’t be matched in any other form of cricket.

Not even a Super Over of a PSL or CPL match ?

Agreed, I think if Stokes lead England to win the ashes he will already have achieved much more in his career than most players. Will deserve knighthood when he retires as well.

Archer is young, after ashes he should be given a good break. Don't need to over bowl and injure him

Congrats to Robert James Mamoon shaz619 What a win. Must say I didn't expect to even come close to winning this but I suppose stokes had other ideas .

they desperately need an all rounder. especially with injury prone bowlers

Australia need someone better and less injury prone than James pattinson. And also a decent fifth bowling option.

Didnt realize that Stokes was out in 2nd last over by Lyon but umpire bad another error there but, as they say luck favors the brave.

One of the greatest knocks I've ever witnessed. Brilliant drama, the Ashes still alive, Steve Smith to return in the 4th test to take on Archer again, Starc probably to come in at Old Trafford due to the reverse swing. This series wil go down in history as one of the greatest, and I can't wait till the next match.

Dropped catch, missed run out and stupid waste of review. Aussies only have themselves to blame.

I am happy with this Ashea remain alive but point still stands England is a mediocre test side and I.l still do not see them regaining the ashes

Ben Stokes' remarkable 135* leads England to incredible one wicket victory

Ben Stokes' unforgettable innings of 135* led England to an incredible one wicket victory in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

From 286/9 Stokes and last man Jack Leach, who made 1 not out from 17 balls, added 76 for the last wicket to carry England to one of the most memorable wins in their 142-year Test history. The series is now tied at 1-1 with two matches to play.

Australia started the day well, bowling four successive maidens before Nathan Lyon had Joe Root caught at slip for 77 by a diving David Warner. Stokes, who at one stage was two not out from 66 balls, was joined by Jonny Bairstow and the two added 86 for the fifth wicket with some counter-attacking strokeplay, as a boisterous Headingley crowd cheered every run to the rafters.

After lunch Australia hit back as Bairstow was caught in the slips off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood for 36, Jos Buttler was run out by Travis Head for 1 and Chris Woakes (1) drove Hazlewood to Matthew Wade at short extra-cover.

That left England 261/7 but Stokes was still there, and he added 25 for the 8th wicket before Jofra Archer was caught at deep square-leg off Lyon for 15. Stuart Broad was lbw to James Pattinson for a duck two balls later, and Australia had one hand on the Ashes.

Stokes though had not given up and with last man Leach digging in at the other end, Stokes proceeded to expertly farm the strike, hitting fours and sixes all round the ground, running hard for several twos, and giving Leach one or two balls per over to survive.

Australia had chances to win it, Marcus Harris spilling a difficult catch off Stokes at third-man, before they wasted their last review on a Leach lbw that pitched well outside leg stump.

Another Stokes straight six left two for victory before a mix up left Leach yards out of his crease at the bowler's end, only for Lyon to fumble the run out opportunity. One ball later Stokes attempted to sweep and survived a huge lbw appeal, which Hawkeye showed would have hit middle and leg.

Leach dabbed a quick single to leg gully to tie the scores before Stokes crashed a four through the covers off Cummins to seal a truly remarkable win as the crowd erupted.

This England team has holes but they are very resilient and refuse to lose. They are far from the soft bottlers that are normally associated with English cricket.

They were on the ropes in the World Cup but rallied at the right time. Today, it was the Stokes show but others played their bit under the pump as well.

The way they responded with the ball after being shot for 67, the way Root and Denly played crucial knocks yesterday in spite of their poor form,

Bairstow’s aggressive cameo against the second new ball that shifted momentum and Leach’s brave innings - this England team has a lot of fight in them and this forum usually doesn’t give them the respect that they deserve.

Not even a super over of a WC Final, for me...… I hardly watch PLs & SLs in any case. Have you observed that last few weeks I spend very little time in PP, because I have a PACKED summer schedule - but I did make time to watch the last innings of SRL-NZ 1st Test, those 3 Ashes Test and tonight I'll follow SRL-NZ Test till lunch to figure out if it's justifying to risk a night's sleep - still 105 overs possible on a crumbling track and Kiwis have ~150 lead already.

This is the fundamental difference with top pacers till 1990s and recent days. Those days, they were skilled and cunning as well - they knew how to get a batsman out when he is trying to save his life (wicket). T20 era has taken cricket to that cheap level where bowlers can go through the motions and "things happen". Today is a bit different case, but in 99% times, you'll see Aussie pacers bowling short and wickets tumbling here & there. Somewhere I read McGrath suggesting that he didn't use "Out-swing" to tail-enders, because they are "too poor to touch" it - he used to bowl In-cutters on stick and made sure that 9, 10 & Jack have to play/block every ball.

I read these days lots of "theory" about the "bowling" era of modern days …… these kids haven't seen batsmen shoulder-arming balls on line & length, that pass by whispering the bails - on absolute green tops, till pacers are into their 3rd spell of the day!!!!!! And, many modern great line-up won't last a full session on Day 4 dry wicket against Warne, Murali, Kumble, Saq or Mushi.

I thought they had maybe a 1/3 chance at the start. When Woakes got out I thought it was all over.

But PSL is pinnacle of cricket according to PCB and some fans.

Who needs Ben Stokes when you have Fahim Ashraf swinging and missing on those wonderful sporting Abu Dhabi pitches or Mohammed Nawaz looking like Murali in Dubai ? Would you not risk a thousand sleeps to watch such a great spectacle ?

:) UAE is indeed something that PCT could have done better missing. Take about today's game - Stokes took 3-4 overs to score last 35 runs, and he also started dead slow but stayed there to kill it ….. few months back Azhar Ali tried to chase last 18-19 runs at "run an over" rate!!!!! I in fact felt sorry for Abbas guy - batted beautifully for his 0* (16), only to be hard done by his No. 3. That's the contribution of UAE in PAK cricket.

But, I don't blame PAK fans for the fascination of T20s, because that's the only format PCT actually plays entertaining cricket or at least compete at per, and PCB promotes. Entertainment industry lives on the promotion and PCB sells Test Cricket like a "Inventory clearing sell" offer. UAE (& domestic) wickets have taken spark out of PAK team, which has made most of PAK's game (particularly Test games) extremely boring, hardly inspiring and often a pain to watch.

PCB, as a board never encouraged Test cricket, never promoted it and never thought of making it exciting, entertaining. Otherwise, in general PAK people love their cricket - there is absolutely no reason why they won't follow a Test match like this one or the SRL-NZ/SAF series. I can recall couple of Test against SRL in 1990s (1994 & 1998 I believe), which ended dead close till 15th session and the stands were almost full by last afternoon - it's not about Test cricket, rather how it's played in PAK that matters.

Last 2 Pom tours to PAK in 2001 & 2005 produced 3 direct results (some how) and 3 draws, Last Aussie tour produced 2 draws, last Indian tours produced 2 draws, last SRL tour had both draws - I felt to burry the groundmen into those tracks alive. Current PCT is a bit border line minnow (they'll go down to 8th on Test table, if WIN draws the next Test), but it was not the case 25 years back, neither PAK was isolated from hosting home games - still some of the Test matches that were hosted by PCB between 1980s to 2009 ….. you would have felt to pee on the wicket and spit on the scorecard.

wonder if Paine will drop himself next game and give the gloves to Wade to strengthen the batting.

I've seen alot of good England test teams, Vaughns 05 team, Straus 09 and 2011 team, this is one of the worse England teams I've seen, batting is mediocrity with alot of em being mental midgets, bowling is being relied on a 37 year old whose on the side line, a 33 year old whose on his last legs, a decent county standard spinner, good job archer was quickly fast tracked, today was just about a one off cameo, idvrather see England get beat so they don't become a closed shop selection wise, typically your views are delusional

Agree that this win doesn’t make everything ok all of a sudden.

We won the toss at home against a Smith-less Aussie side and still almost lost the match.

Roy and Buttler are both averaging an abysmal 9 in the series. Buttler in particular has looked terrified, like a rabbit in headlights when he came out to bat today and his dismissal was deeply amateurish.

Drop ‘em both.

What a game!

Stokes won it for England out of nowhere.

Advantage England now. They are in a great position to win back the Ashes.

The bowling is a problem but the batting the best since Swann retired.

The 37-year-old will be put out to graze now, I think. Broad is bowling faster than in the last two years and can carry on for a couple of years yet. Archer is already an ace. Stokes boweld 23 overs off the reel yesterday for three strikes in Archer's absence. Woakes is very good in England and Leach is competent.

Congratulations to all England fans ! Great comeback to win a brilliant test match .

Can’t see Aussies retaining the Ashes now .

Congrats to England for a great win but above everything it was cricket which was the winner and illustrating that still test cricket is the supreme form of the game.England displayed resilience at its crescendo facing an uphill task under optimum pressure.of having the Ashes churn st stake.Ben Stokes played arguably one of the 10 best test innings of all time and possibly 3. best of all in a run chase with an exhibition of riveting stroke play.Few players have ever ressurected a team to reach the pinnacle of Glory like Stokes yesterday There is no word in the dictionary which could do justice to the intensity of his domination having a stroke for every kind of delivery.Defeat was a foregoe conclusion till Stokes launched his blitzkreig reminiscent of a sudden turn in plot in the climax of a Hollywood epic. Before lunch England had the marginal edge but after a quick flurry of wickets soon after the break it looked over for England bar the shouting.

Still England should not be complacent however heroic was their rise like a Phoenix from the Ashes.Overall Australia has still played the cricket and would have retained the Ashes but for the miracle caused by Ben Stokes .England were Afterall outplayed for most of the game as well as the 1st test.I Still back Australia to retain the Ashes,Nevertheless no doubt the morale has risen in the aEnglish camp Like a ressurected army which had reached the depths of despair.
