India have a lot of work to do on Day 2 if they are to make a comeback in this game.

This match is done. It's only going to get worse because the bowlers are going to get bowled into the ground on a flat wicket and they're going to be worn out for the next test. India if it had negotiated through that tough two sessions on day 1, it could have cashed in with the pitch easing out, but they batted like they were playing in Mumbai and lost the test in two hours on day 1. Best thing India could do in this test now is to give walkover and concentrate on the next test.

Four pacers in the team, overcast conditions, yet India skipper Virat Kohli decided to bat first. England captain Joe Root was happy to have lost the toss and field. The visitors didn't take long to highlight why Kohli was wrong in deciding to send his men to bat on the 'tacky' Headingley pitch by bundling them out for just 78 runs. But, Rishabh Pant feels the team can't be thinking about the decision at the toss as much.

Rohit Sharma was the top scorer for India from the first innings, scoring 19 runs while Ajinkya Rahane came in second with 18. It was James Anderson who rattled the Indian top-order, bagging three wickets including the big one of Kohli. Pant, who usually looks unperturbed with the dismissal of his teammates, also failed to last long on the crease.

The chatter among the experts has been that Kohli was wrong to bat first and should've rather made the use of overcast conditions, especially as he had 4 pacers in the ranks. Pant, speaking to media at the press conference after the end of the day's play, said that the team backs whatever decision is taken at the toss and doesn't like to think much about it.

"Whatever decision we take, we take as a team," Pant said. "So once we have decided we are going to bat first, we are going to back our decision. Yes, we could have applied much better but we can't keep on thinking too much about the toss.

Reflecting on the nature of the surface in the first session on Day 1, Pant said that although the Indian batters could've applied themselves better, England pacers bowled in really good areas to get rid of them.

"It's part and parcel of the game. Everyday the batting unit is giving its 100% but sometimes it doesn't go well. In the morning, the wicket was slightly on the softer side and they bowled in good areas. We could have applied ourselves better. We can learn from it and only move on. That's all we can do as cricketers. You learn from your mistakes and improve."

In comparison, Indian pacers struggled to impose themselves and ended the first day's play without a single wicket to their name. The wicket-keeper batsman feels the conditions became much more conducive for batters when England openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed came out to bat.

"They took the heavy roller, the wicket was much more settled down, and they batted nicely also," he said. "But when we batted, the wicket was slightly soft, and they bowled in good areas, but we could have applied [ourselves] much better…"

Pant himself has been in the spotlight for a while now, having become a strong pillar for the team, especially with the bat. With the likes of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane struggling for runs, Pant has played a number of rescue innings for India. The young cricketer, however, sees the situation as more of an opportunity than pressure.

"As a cricketer, I don't think in that manner." Pant said. "Whatever be the situation, you think about the team first and what you can do in that situation… if the top-order collapses and you get an opportunity, I see it as an opportunity that if you can bail the team out of that situation, you are going to do wonders in your life, as a cricketer."

England remain in the driving seat in the 3rd Test, with a healthy 42-run lead on Day 1. India would really need to be at their absolute best if they are to get anything out from the match.

England will wear black armbands today in respect of the passing of Ted Dexter.

Need to have a good day today. My manager who was maintaining pedestrian distance from the topic of cricket after Lords already reminded me twice about yesterday's game this morning with a big grin on his face. :))

This has always been the problem whenever India tours here...the embarrassment in office if we play badly. That 2014 tour still haunts me...LOL.

C'mmon India....world is watching.

India fast bowlers (especially Shami) will be tough this morning in the early dew. If England can get to lunch with only a couple down, then their batters can cash in as lateral movement reduces.

A big day for Hameed if he can take the chance and build on his excellent work if yesterday.

Let’s be realistic, this match is already over.

You don’t recover being bundled under 80, and then the opposition go past your score without losing a wicket.

This game will be over by day 4 latest.

Yeah max by 4th day tea and that is a strech too. Eng will bat by lunch tomorrow and declare. Would get India out and win by an innings.

I think all India need is a couple of breakthroughs and England's batting will come down like a house of cards.

India finally bowling the right length at this ground but far too late when the damage has been done.

Shastri should be fired for not preparing them adequately. He should have known what Headingly was about, but was probably too busy celebrating the Lords win.

India not giving much away this morning

Not sure how long they can keep bowling Bumrah and Shami

England's opening wicket stand of 135 in this match was their highest since Alastair Cook & Haseeb Hameed put on 180 v India in 2016.

It’s not the strongest but they have an English ATG at #4 and Moeen at #7 has five test hundreds.

I think yesterday came as a shock to India, even their bowlers lost the plot. Bowling far better today

True. I think England will post 400 and bat us out of the game. Anderson will grab another 5fer tomorrow.

England can bat slowly all day and still finish on a very strong position with plenty of the game to go, barring a miracle i can only see 1-1 here

Barstow has been given enough chances, time to replace him with living legend Livingstone :afridi

Clearly hameed has got the instructions to try n ensure england dont lose many wickets early in the day

My thoughts exactly. He is far better than Sibley to give his wicket away like that.

poor stuff from hameed got stuck in a rut then gets out.

and Hameed is out to Jadeja. could have scrapped a ton but India bowling far better today

siraj trying to give some stick back to the english fans, lets hope he doesn't start crying when they have had a few drinks and england are on top, cos the fans wont forget.

Malan is looking good. I like his wristy shots backward of square.

This top three looks so much better than the previous few combinations.

Especially Shami for what?? On his best days, he takes max 3-4 wickets. Always looks like he bowls well but with no success.

Root is an international ATG, remarkable batsman.

But what's around him is so fragile, I can't remember the last time Moeen played a meaningful test knock, Malan is only just making a come back, Bairstow and Buttler are terrific strikers but sometimes lack the ability to draw an innings out.

India get Root early = chance in the game.

Eng cross 200.
Root dug in the crease, Malan is non-chalant. All in all, easy for England

Root passes 1300 runs this calendar year. He has five test max after this one to catch MoYo’s record of 1788.

Again he makes it look easy by comparison to his team, scoring at 100 / 100 balls while everyone else so far is at 40.

England’s top four all pass 30 for the first time in an incredible 104 tests.

New ball, critical for India to stay in the game. They need four wickets, now.

wow that is shockingly bad. Have to say englands top 3 at moment is probably best options they have in reality.

Where's Kohli and his aggression....didn't hear any chirping from him today

Shami getting thumped by Malan. Bring on the real deals, Bumrah and Siraj.

Kohli’s captaincy is awful. Root is hitting everything square, yet he is guarding the vee.

Looks like England are on the way for 500. Really feeling for missing out our batsman super show earlier on Day 1.

nothing in the pitch whats so ever, new ball edge is not even carrying to keeper, intresting to see what england do in indias second innings.

Dawid Malan has been breath of fresh air.

He should have played first two tests as well.

Fifty for Malan for on his England return.

Top four all get fifties…..

Meh. It'll be a mine field once India will bat. We have two batsman and a somewhat okish lower order which is carrying the burden of batting. Middle order is non existent. Even if you remove them, it won't have much impact on overall score. That's how useless they are.

This has turned into a completely one sided affair mainly due to Ind batting yesterday but, bowling has been pretty harmless as well till now. Even with the pitch possibly better for batting, Eng has plenty of time and potentially plenty of lead to get the positive result out of this match.

Bowl tight and bore them out. This is a good situation for Pujara but the rest will be under massive scoreboard pressure.

Might start turning for Moeen, we shall see.

The top four England batsmen have all passed fifty now, the first time that has happened since 2013.

These 2 have scored 115 at a rate of 4.6 per over.

Ishant has been terrible. Where is Ashwin?
