What's new

England reach 77/0 at stumps on Day 4 in pursuit of a target of 368 runs against India

If Rahane plays the 5th test I'm going to laugh.

As vice captain too.

Whoops, Kohli gone.

Game over. England 2-1.

That is a big wicket.

India however are still in a good position here. England are keeping themselves in the game but remain behind overall.

Rahane played a disgracefully poor innings in the situation: he is not defending, not scoring, nor is he inspiring any confidence at all — he should be dropped.

England is at very good position to win this test now .im sure ali will take more than 2 wickets now .

That's the match wide open for England. Kohli batted well in both innings but not enough runs to make a difference.

Both batsmen surprisingly playing within themselves some big shots would’ve been expected.

I was wrong about Shardul Thakur who is not a bad all rounder after all. He is easily a poor man's Hardik Pandya and better than likes of Vijay Shankar.

High quality batsmanship from the great Rishabh Pant, who went on to deliver India one of their greatest wins in the history of Indian cricket. :inti

LUNCH - India 329-6 (Thakur 11, Pant 16) - LEAD BY 230

England have done well this morning, but they know they need to keep that going - Thakur and Pant can score quick runs and both are dangerous customers. Anderson and Robinson back to try to knock them over?

That's one of the things Joe Root will be thinking about in the approximately 32 minutes before they go back out there again at the Oval...

This is a perfect opportunity for Pant. India has a healthy lead, flat pitch, no pressure at all on him and Shardul Thakur is batting very well here too. :inti

Moeen getting turn, ashwin will be missed by india.
England need to wrap up the innings quickly. A Chase above 250 can still be tricky even on a flat pitch.

Michael Atherton said: "England kept a pretty tight lid on the scoring rate, just 59 runs in the session, three wickets, a couple of those very big wickets - it's a very, very evenly poised game."

Michael Holding added: "If England are chasing 250-260, I would have them as favourites. I think India need to be pushing towards 300 to be thinking 'yes, we are in with a very good chance'."

Yes they are right , England is favourite to win anything under 300. 300 to 350 anyone game ,above 350 india is favourite to win .

India better win this, if only to irk Holding. Ive noticed the guy is anti India, anyone else feel this way 🤷*♂️

Yep, conditions look good, pitch is flat. Eng surely in with even chance.
i dont see us setting even 300. hope am gladly proven wrong, atherton was so confident and said oval alway has traditionally got better to play as the test progresses,
what an impact the new additons to the two squads are having here, woakes and pope, thakur and yadav
I always felt due to the brilliance of stokes, Eng always overlooked such a super quality player like woakes, any team around would be glad to have him.

This pitch is still very good for batting ,yes there is slow turn but we don't have service of Ashwin .

Missed the first session. How the heck did Rahane not score even in these conditions!!?

Stokes is batting all-rounder where woakes is bowling all-rounder.any team want both of them in playing eleven .

India already has enough runs.

Only Covid or rain can save England.

Very important partnership for India. There is nothing much in the wicket like yesterday so these two need to carry on for as long as they can. Though 4th innings chase pressure will be on Eng even with 250 irrespective of the conditions.

For Eng as mentioned before, irrespective of the conditions I personally am never that fond of a one dimensional attack in terms of pace and angles (Except height/release point differences all Eng pacers are operating at similar pace and strategies).

Shardul is not competing with Pandya for the spot. He is competing with Ashwin.

Not sure why do people throw Pandya's name when he is not even in the squad and even in the consideration.

Good batsmanship from left handed Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi mould into one. Certainly done enough to be considered a better bat than Hasan Ali.

Looks like pressure has started to take better of him. It was possibly the best chance in the series for him to score and get some form and confidence back.

Good shot by Rishabh, hope he does not get carried away and do something diamond crazy especially against ali

This is the easiest track to bat so far in this series and there is no pressure on Pant at all. Shardul is also playing quite well here. :inti

Thakur has a batting average of 39 and bowling average of 24 so far but he lacks the X factor of someone like Pandya therefore no one rates him in India. Fans love to hype hacks and bits & pieces players. :inti

After the initial couple of overs by Woakes, the conditions have become really easy for batting. Rahane's wicket looks like an even bigger missed opportunity given the context.

Think this is Jimmy Anderson's last test for this season. He wont play in Manchester as 5 games is too much of a stretch for him. This maybe his last spell before Ashes downunder.

I think Pant's presence is intimidating not only for opposition but for one of our own fan too :yk

Although these are flat conditions but Thakur looks so confident while batting. He should be given a chance to bat above Jaddu and Pant sometimes. Can become an allrounder we have been looking for a long time. :inti

Game out of England's reach now.

Unless rain saves them again like it did at Trent Bridge, this one has got 2-1 India written all over it.

well he's bolwed 29 ov so far, but its not like ashes are the next month. He's such a competitive guy and i would think he will play in OT test.
I want him to play.
not only is he a class act, all the more fun when we win and collectively put the pepper masala up jim grump's nose:faf

Root has to be a touch unorthodox here. Get fielders in, bowl bouncers or slower ones. Try to not give easy singles. after lunch they had to be more aggressive but have gone soft

The first day was bowler friendly. Day 2 and Day 3 were flat and day 4 has been even flatter. Given this trend, I dont see any reason why England cant chase this

Because it is the last innings. The wicket is less relevant than the psychological pressure. I wouldn’t back Strauss’s team to get 250, let alone these guys.

Root goes through these phases as captain where he has zero clue as to what to do. Pant has been Robinson's bunny this entire series yet Robinson has not bowled at all to him.

If there is no sign of deterioration, India should just keep England out there as long as possible. Reduce whatever chance England has of winning.

Michael Holding's tone is always a good indicator of India's position in the game.

Now he is in full mourning.

Get to tea sensibly then think of quick runs to declare. There is enough time to worry of declaration.

2nd test Day 5 was also flat, England could not survive for 2 sessions there

Will be interesting to see how Indian bowlers bowl on this wicket. England have two walking wickets at the top. :inti
