Eoin Morgan has been forced to rearrange his wedding later this year after changes were made to the itinerary for the tour of Sri Lanka.

England's one-day captain was due to marry Australian fiancée Tara Ridgway in October but an alteration to the scheduling of the first of next winter's overseas assignments has led to a postponement.

England travel to Colombo on September 30 and were set to begin with the Test series, with the limited-overs section of the tour following in November.

However, Sri Lanka Cricket have since flipped the fixtures.

The 31-year-old is understood to have committed to the tour, intent on continuing the 50-over team's momentum towards the 2019 World Cup.

England's Test captain Joe Root is also to wed partner Carrie Cotterell next winter but the date does not conflict with either the tour to Sri Lanka or the one to the Caribbean in early 2019.

You just skip it :) But he shows lot of commitment.

Maybe his reason for postponing the wedding (as opposed to skipping the tour) is that he feels his place/captaincy would be in doubt if his replacement did well in the series. Eoin Morgan hasn't been in the best of form himself lately.

There's no chance of him as captain being dropped the winter prior to a World Cup, particularly given how superb his captaincy has been.

Agreed. His place has never been in doubt but if he carries on bad form in the summer as well then people may start calling for him.

Quite a stupid move imo.... Wedding is much bigger event than any JAMODI series with Lanka of all teams.

Admire his commitment. Delaying his wedding for a bilateral series against Sri Lanka.

England tour of Sri Lanka (2018)

England will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a one-off Twenty20 match when they tour Sri Lanka this winter.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) and Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed the schedule for England's tour, which begins on October 10 with a day-night ODI at Dambulla.

There will be three day-night ODI matches in all, while the sole T20 will also be a day-night game in Colombo.

The first Test will be at Galle International Stadium, with the following held in Kandy.

The third and final Test is to be played in the capital Colombo from November 23 to 27, when the tournament ends.

England drew their last Test series against Sri Lanka 1-1 before visiting them again in 2014 for a seven-match one-day series, which the hosts won.

Looking forward to the test series. England should coast the LO series . Poms issues facing spin and bowling spin will give Sri Lanka hope of winning the series.

That was [MENTION=132916]Junaids[/MENTION] theory lol. They do count but they shouldn't be used a reason to over hype a player.

Sorry for delayed reply, I don't remember ME overhyping any player with runs scored vs SL. Are you making generalized statement or saying to me in particular ?

England name Test squad for Sri Lanka Tour

England National Cricket Selectors have named the following 16-strong squad for the three-match Test series in Sri Lanka starting in November.

England Test squad

Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain

Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)

Jimmy Anderson (Lancashire)

Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire) wicketkeeper

Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)

Rory Burns (Surrey)

Jos Buttler (Lancashire)

Sam Curran (Surrey)

Joe Denly (Kent)

Keaton Jennings (Lancashire)

Jack Leach (Somerset)

Ollie Pope (Surrey)

Adil Rashid (Yorkshire)

Ben Stokes (Durham)

Olly Stone (Warwickshire)

Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Surrey opening batsman Rory Burns, Kent batsman Joe Denly and Warwickshire seamer Olly Stone are called-up to the squad for the first time.

Burns, who has captained Surrey to the Specsavers County Championship Division One title this summer, has been the leading run scorer in the top flight this season scoring 1,319 championship runs at an average of over 69.

The 32-year-old Denly returns to the England set-up for the first time since 2010 when he earned nine ODI caps and played five IT20s. The experienced right-hand batsman is comfortable batting at the top of the order and has played a pivotal role in Kent’s successful season, which saw them secure promotion to the top-flight of the County Championship this week. He is also a useful leg-spin bowler and will give options to England’s attack in the spin friendly conditions of Sri Lanka.

Stone, who was named in England’s ODI squad for the first time earlier this week, has been in excellent form for Warwickshire at the top of the Specsavers County Championship Division Two. The 24-year-old pace bowler has taken 37 wickets at just 12 apiece.

Somerset left-arm spinner Jack Leach returns to the squad for the first time since he made his debut in New Zealand in March and is one of three specialist spinners named alongside Worcestershire’s Moeen Ali and Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Commenting on the selection of the squad, National Selector Ed Smith, said:

“Joe Denly has had an excellent season with bat and ball and has matured into one of the leading players in county cricket. He has that all-round touch of class that can help at the highest level.

“Olly Stone is an exciting talent who bowls with pace and skill. His 37 wickets in the county championship have come at an average of 12.27 and a strike rate of 22.22.

“Rory Burns, who has led Surrey to the Championship title, has been the most consistent run-scorer in county cricket in recent seasons and fully deserves his elevation to the Test squad. Rory is the leading championship run-scorer this season with 1319 at an average of 69.”

Jonny Bairstow: England batsman ruled out of white ball games by injury

England batsman Jonny Bairstow will miss the remaining one-day international and one-off T20 against Sri Lanka after twisting his ankle playing football in training.

England brought in Alex Hales to replace Yorkshire's Bairstow for Saturday's fourth match, with victory giving them a series-winning 3-0 lead.

The final match takes place in Colombo on Tuesday with the T20 on Saturday.

The first of three Test matches starts in Galle on 6 November.

England regularly play a short game of football in training and pre-match warm-ups, and the players have been awarding each other fantasy football values on this tour.

However, speaking earlier this week, recalled 32-year-old Kent batsman Joe Denly offered another reminder of the risks involved.

He suffered a knee injury in a challenge from team-mate Owais Shah in 2009 and football was banned for a time by then England coach Andy Flower.

Referring to the incident, Denly said: "A few of the lads were saying I ruined their football - the best part of the day as they say.

"Thankfully it is back in now and hopefully no more injuries."

Ben Foakes to be flown is as cover for injured Jonny Bairstow for Tests

Surrey wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes is line for a Test call-up for Sri Lanka Tests series starting next month, as cover for the injured Jonny Bairstow, as per reports.

Bairstow who has been ruled out of the remaining ODI and the following one-off T20I and is a doubtful starter for the Test series as well. The 25-year-old Foakes is likely to be flown in if Bairstow fails the fitness Test ahead of the 1st Test at Galle starting November 6, according to The Evening Standard.

Bairstow twisted his right ankle while playing football during training ahead of the fourth ODI on Sunday – which England won to claim the series with a game to spare – and was replaced by Alex Hales.

In Bairstow’s absence, Jos Buttler could take the gloves (Ollie Pope is also an occasional wicketkeeper), but England are ready to send for Surrey man Foakes.

Jos Buttler taking gloves in absence of Jonny Bairstow 'the likely scenario' – Joe Root

England Test captain Joe Root revealed that Jonny Bairstow's chances of participating in the first Test against Sri Lanka remained sketchy, but expressed confidence in Jos Buttler's ability to fill in for him with the gloves.

First-choice Test wicket-keeper Bairstow picked up an ankle ligament injury while playing football ahead of the fourth one-day international against Sri Lanka, and is still in the recovery process. Root said Bairstow was making faster progress than was expected, but still remained a doubtful starter for the first Test in Galle, which begins on 6 November.

He accepted that Bairstow, who averages 37.19 with the bat in Test cricket, would be a big loss should he not recover in time, but remained confident in Buttler's ability to make up for his absence.

"Although Jonny will be a big loss, we've got great players that can come in and rebalance the team," Root told BBC Sport. "It's day-by-day with Jonny at the minute. He's actually made good strides and recovered a little bit quicker than we anticipated, but it's still a long way to go.

"It's obviously a big three-match series, so we need to weigh all that up and make a decision closer to the first game."

In addition to Buttler, who was likely to play as a specialist batsman in any case, England could also turn to Ben Foakes, the Surrey wicket-keeper, who was called up as cover for Bairstow. But the likelier course of action, according to Root, would be for Buttler to sport the gloves.

"That will probably be the likely scenario. But the reason we called Ben up is because he's a high-quality keeper and we give ourselves another way of balancing the side out and give ourselves a chance of winning.

"These are all different options we've given ourselves going into this series and it's a really nice position to be in."

That apart, the England captain says he has a fair idea of what the team for the first Test will look like, but performances in the warm-ups against Sri Lanka Board's XI would help the team management determine the best XI.

"I've got a strong idea of what the core of it looks like, but we have got some great options," he said. "We are going to make sure we've got a very balanced side that gives ourselves the best chance of winning in these conditions."

England's comeback man Denly is eyeing a Test spot

Having picked up 4/19 on his England comeback after a lengthy hiatus to secure a 30-run victory against Sri Lanka in the one-off Twenty20 International, Joe Denly said he was now eyeing a spot in Test side.

When Denly broke into the England team in 2009, it was solely for his abilities with the bat – in fact he opened the batting, and never once rolled his arm over in any of the nine one-day internationals he played.

Fast forward nine years, and it seems that Denly is in equal parts a capable bowler and a batsman. If anything, in his first performance in an England shirt after the break, he impressed more with the ball.

A practioner of leg-spin bowling, Denly says he has made huge advances in the past couple of years, and now backs himself to land accurate leg-breaks – a skill that could come in handy in the upcoming three-match Test series in Sri Lanka as well.

He has statistics behind him to prove that his haul in the T20I was no fluke. In the 2018 T20 Blast, he was among the leading wicket-takers, finishing with 20 scalps at 16.75. He also picked up 23 wickets at 18.52 in the County Championship and 14 wickets at 30.78 in the domestic One-Day Cup.

Denly feels his expertise as a batsman has helped shape him into a better bowler. "Being, primarily, a batsman, I feel I have a pretty good sense of what batsmen are trying to do," the 32-year-old said. "I back myself to land my leg-spinner reasonably well, and I enjoy opening the bowling. I did it for Kent in T20 last summer."

The ability to put in contributions with both bat and ball has inspired new confidence in Denly, and he reiterated that he's just enjoying his game now.

"I've had some ups and downs in the last eight years," he said. "But, over the last two or three years, I've enjoyed my cricket a lot more. I've played with a bit more freedom and I've learned to deal with failure a lot better.

"I feel (like) a different player to the one I was in 2010. This time I've come in with the attitude of embracing it and enjoying every moment of it.

"Getting a chance, performing with the ball and chipping in with a little 20 down the lower-order can only give me confidence. It's certainly nice to get a game in before the red-ball stuff starts."

Denly has made his ambitions to play the upcoming Tests very clear, and knows he could have the edge over some of the others because of his bowling. Towards that end, he hopes to make a mark in the two-day warm-up fixture, starting on 30 October.

"Obviously there's a spot up for grabs at the top of the [Test] order," he said. "Being able to bowl might work in my favour. But it comes down to performing in these warm-up games and putting your name forward for that first Test. I'm certainly going into those practice games looking forward to performing, scoring runs and giving myself the best chance."

The first of three Tests will get underway in Galle on 6 November, and if all goes to plan for Denly, he could be making his Test debut.

Root backs Broad to play a part in Sri Lanka Tests

Stuart Broad can play a ‘massive part’ in the upcoming three-Test series in Sri Lanka, said Joe Root, but didn’t guarantee the experienced seamer a spot in the starting XI.

England’s first Test in Sri Lanka starts on 6 November in Galle. Jos Buttler is likely to don the keeper’s gloves because of Jonny Bairstow’s injury, while England have five frontline pacemen in the squad, as well as Ben Stokes, and they might not field more than two of them.

There was talk that Broad, with 433 Test wickets to his name, might not make the trip as the management attempts to manage his workload. He made the trip in the end, but a place in the XI is far from certain.

“I wouldn't say it's a changing of the guard and I wouldn't say he's in a weaker position than he has been previously – he could still definitely play a massive part within the three-match series and definitely in the first game is an option,” said Root.

“But we've been away from home for a number of times now and struggled. So finding a different formula with him or without him, I don't think it weakens him as a player or shows where his game is going.”

As such, James Anderson and Broad form England’s first-choice new-ball pair, but in the subcontinent, the stress is likely to be on spin, and they have Adil Rashid and Jack Leach in the squad apart from all-rounder Moeen Ali.

That said, Broad has had a decent year, and has been on the upward curve after a lean 2017.

“I think he's actually improving all the time and using his experience wisely,” said Root. “His action is as strong as it has ever been, but whether we have to find a different formula, we'll just wait and see.”

England have been in Sri Lanka since early October, and won the one-day internationals 3-1 and then the lone Twenty20 International. They play a two-day tour match on 30-31 October against a Sri Lanka Board XI before the start of the first Test.

Sri Lanka political crisis: England asked to remain vigilant

Sri Lanka is in the midst of a political crisis with a man being killed by the bodyguard of ICC World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga. The turmoil began after President Maithripala Sirisena sacked the country’s prime minister and replaced him Mahinda Rajapakse.

Ranatunga was arrested after his bodyguard opened fire at a crowd that left one dead and two others injured. He was subsequently released on bail.

England cricket team are in the final leg of their Sri Lanka tour and are facing a Sri Lanka Board Presidents XI side in a two-day practice match starting from October 30.

“We are exercising vigilance and avoiding all demonstrations or large political gatherings. We are aware of a political demonstration today, but for us it is all about preparations for the first Test,” England spokesman Danny Reuben was quoted as saying by AFP.

Reuben confirmed that the warm-up fixtures will go ahead as per schedule.

Sri Lanka will host England for a three-Test series beginning November 6 in Galle.

Jonny Bairstow out of 1st Test against Sri Lanka

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow is yet to fully recover from an ankle injury he picked up during the ODI series against Sri Lanka which has ruled him out of the first Test that starts from Tuesday in Galle.

Confirming the news, England head coach Trevor Bayliss said they are observing caution considering the busy summer ahead. Bairstow picked up the injury while playing football during training session.

“Jonny is not available for this Test match. He has come on a long way in the last week or so but with another winter tour and a big summer we didn’t necessarily want to risk it,” Bayliss told Test Match Special.

England have backup wicketkeepers in Jos Buttler and Ben Foakes. Buttler hasn’t been able to establish himself as a solid choice behind the stumps but his batting credentials mean he is a regular fixture across the formats.

In case England opt to go for a specialist ‘keeper, Foakes will make his debut but they are yet to settle down on a combination. “They’re both still very much in our thinking and that will probably come down to the combination we want to play,’ said Bayliss. “Definitely one of them will be keeping but how we structure the batting order and what combination of bowlers we put in to the team could determine who eventually gets the gloves.”

Lahiru Kumara, who was in the 16 member test squad to face England in the three match series, has been found guilty of breaching the code of conduct of the team.

Accordingly, the team management decided to replace him.
Dushmantha Chameera comes in as the replacement.

Wow thats a big blow for SL. Kumara did pretty goood in the warm-up match. What did he do?

Galle is always spin friendly, so both sides likely to play 3 spinners. Also with rain and humid conditions during test, swing bowlers should enjoy conditions as well.

Too many bowlers/pace bowlers, might as well place the extra batsman. Added to that we don't really need Denly as a 4th spinner and he's not really done enough to justify selection over Jennings.

Added to that, no Buttler?

3-1 in the ODI series and won the only T20, now 1-0 up in the Test series.

England are one more good Test match away from having their best ever tour of Sri Lanka.

https://www.ecb.co.uk/england/men/news/911131/england-name-unchanged-side-for-second-sri-lanka-test

England have named an unchanged side for the second Test against Sri Lanka starting in Kandy on Wednesday.

Ben Stokes is expected to bat at No.3, with Moeen Ali coming in at No. 6.

England team for second Sri Lanka Test: Burns, Jennings, Stokes, Root, Buttler, Ali, Foakes, Curran, Rashid, Leach, Anderson.

Joe Root, England captain, said: “Having had a good look at the surface today, we feel the side that won the first Test will give us the best opportunity for us to get something out of this Test. The surface is dry and it will spin. The balance of the team is ideal for these conditions. We can also adapt, if the situation dictates, as we showed in Galle.

Three Lions captain Joe Root reflects on his century in his first Test as captain at Lord's in 2017. Brought to you by New Balance.

“Ben's game is in good shape and he is more than capable of batting at three. We are in a fortunate position that many in the side could bat in that position. Ben’s technique is sound and he will be able to adapt to this role. He is one of the fittest guys in the side, so the intensity of batting in the top order and bowling as one of our three seamers, will not faze him.

“If we feel that he has done a tremendous workload with the ball, then we can adapt and alter the order if it’s necessary, but I don’t expect that to happen. Ben is relishing the added responsibility of doing a job at three.”

“Jonny [Bairstow] was available for selection. Trevor [Bayliss] and I have spoken to him about finding the right balance for this Test with the conditions we are expecting. He understands the situation and is aware that we have to pick the side that are best suited to conditions we can expect in Kandy. It is unfortunate that he missed out through injury in the first Test. He is an integral part of our plans and is a key member of our core squad and his experience around the group is important.”

Uncapped off-spinner Nishan Peiris called up as Dananjaya replacement

The off-spinner Nishan Peiris has been called up to the Sri Lanka Test squad as a replacement for Akila Dananjaya, who was reported for a suspect action in the first Test against England.

Dananjaya is set to undergo an assessment at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on Friday. He was given 14-days to respond to the charge, which allowed him to feature in the second Test. The mystery spinner claimed eight wickets in the match, and contributed a vital 31 with the bat in the first innings.

Peiris, 21 years old, has only featured in 12 first-class games, but has picked up 38 wickets at 29.52, including two five-wicket hauls. In his last first-class outing, for Galle against Kandy, he picked up first innings figures of 6/67.

Peiris has represented Sri Lanka Under 19s and Sri Lanka A in the past, and has form against England, having picked up three wickets in a warm-up game against them before this series.

Sri Lanka’s third Test against England starts in Colombo on 23 November.

Jimmy Anderson has confirmed that he will be rested for the third Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, with Stuart Broad replacing the seamer.

The Three Lions have already won the three-match series, leading 2-0 after victory in the second Test in Kandy, and will take the opportunity to rest their all-time leading wicket-taker.

Broad, 32, has missed out on a place in the side in the first two Tests but will play in the match starting on Friday at the SSC - the same ground where he made his debut in 2007.

"I understand the reasoning behind it with the series already won," Anderson said.

"With the winter we've got ahead, it makes sense for Stuart to get some cricket. He's not played for a while and it's going to be a tough tour of the West Indies.

"It's a good opportunity for him and the team. You have to look at the situation as well - it's hard work for seamers here and it's not like I've been able to have a huge input on the games."

Bairstow, Broad included in England’s line-up for the third Test

Stuart Broad and Jonny Bairstow will feature in England's third and final Test in Sri Lanka in Colombo on Friday at the expense of Jimmy Anderson and Sam Curran.

England’s highest Test wicket-taker, Anderson, has been rested, while all-rounder Curran has a minor side issue.

Broad will get his first airing of the tour at the SSC – the same ground where he made his debut in 2007 – while Bairstow, who injured his ankle during a football exercise in a pre-series training session, is likely to get an opportunity to prove his credentials at No.3, with Ben Stokes, who batted at first drop in the second Test, likely to return to No.5.

During his absence, Bairstow has seen wicket-keeper Ben Foakes perform admirably with the gloves, and the Surrey youngster will retain 'keeping duties in the final outing of the tour.

"I understand the reasoning behind it with the series already won," Anderson said after confirmation he would be rested. "With the winter we've got ahead, it makes sense for Stuart to get some cricket. He's not played for a while and it's going to be a tough tour of the West Indies.

"It's a good opportunity for him and the team. You have to look at the situation as well – it's hard work for seamers here and it's not like I've been able to have a huge input on the games."

On Sri Lanka's side, along with the call-up of uncapped off-spinner Nishan Peiris to replace Akila Dananjaya, who is undergoing bowling action tests, Danushka Gunathilaka has been added to the squad, with uncapped batsman Charith Asalanka missing out.

Captain Dinesh Chandimal is again unavailable, having failed to recover from the injury which ruled him out of the second Test. Suranga Lakmal will continue to lead the side in his stead.

England have already won the three-match series, with their victory in the second Test in Kandy giving them a 2-0 lead.
