What's new

England v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Birmingham | Aug 3-7, 2016 | Day 4

200+ has only been chased twice here. 205 and 281 (the highest here which was chased by Graeme Smith and co).

As it stands 158 is already the 3rd highest chase here.

exactly what i was saying earlier. England if they had half a brain would counter attack- dont back Pak to chase over 260 and thats only a 100

No dude.

They pointlessly counter attacked when they were going well.

Till 200 lead...no counter attack.

After 200 lead...counter attack.

The game was win or draw for them in the bag.

Now look at them, trying to build because of a few bad shots.

I didn't even know that was an option will check it out. rest of the sky team I enjoy listening to but beefy is insufferable at times.

BBC has Swann who is equally as bad.

I listen to BBC during weekdays (can't turn on live video stream at work) and on weekends I watch it on the tellys.

Let me assure you Swann isn't a big step up from Botham

Swann Trott and Beefy are overly biased against Pakistan and too biased towards England.

Yeh that's a different pitch altogether. It used to turn miles on day 4 and 5..

Pakistan should have kept the Amir and Rahat for the new ball in this second spell

Yeh that man swann is as biased as they come. Someone who can make Cheetan Sharma look neutral.

Sohail is done for the day so Pakistan is down to 3 bowlers.

Oh? You went through the history books to confirm this? Can you tell us the breakdown for spinners vs pace bowlers avg on the day 5? Also, comparing the spinners avg on day 1 vs day 5? Please do share

No I didn't . This is what Nas, Warne and Atherton were discussing yesterday in the commentary.

Also , Channel 5 commentary team had the same opinion about the pitch including geffory and swann.

Bairstow looks a million bucks man. Has so much time to play the ball with excellent concentration. Will take some doing to beat him.

Would prefer the new ball bowlers work on Ballance and keep him on strike as much as possible.

Another session won by england

The one huge positive is that they did not score very fast. Cook is a pretty defensive captain, he will not declare without a sizeable lead. Hopefully Eng will have to bat well into tomorrow morning, and we can defend out 70-75 overs to get a draw.

Of course, ideally, we get all 6 wickets for 20 runs post tea. Haha

Best chance for England is if they are bowled out with a 260-270 lead by early morning tomorrow latest. Then Pakistan will have to survive 60-70 overs and the pressure might get to them and they might collapse OR there is a slight chance they will chase it down. If wickets don't fall till then Cook won't declare till mid 2nd session tomorrow and it will be a draw.

Indeed. Cook is a safety first captain. England all set to bat 15-20 overs more tomorrow. Good from Misbah for keeping it tight.

Cook is a safety first captain. No way he is declaring before 320-350 and the pitch is damn good so I don't see England collapsing.

Leaders like McCullum, Clarke would have declared and challenged Pak.

Not that bad a session for Pakistan.

The run rate has been curtailed due to wickets and good bowling in the fag end of the session.

England can't do much till they touch 200 lead so Pakistan can squeeze them in 3rd session too.

160 run lead......even 100 runs in last session means just 260 which is short.

Unless England get bowled out or do some magic by scoring fast in 3rd session...Pakistan will be bowling on Day 5 and that's a huge achievement.

England lost 2 pointless wickets which killed their run rate or else they were pretty quick in session 2.

Wow...this game is fun.

And that is why the Indian team is kinda a joke, even when they are dominating and winning. You guys could have a 500 run lead, but cause two days are left, you gets scared that the other team has 180 overs to score the runs, so you better bat longer. 270 is not safe on a potential day 5 pitch? Hilarious.

You do know that almost 1 day was washed out?

A double blow at at the start of the session will keep england from scoring , we might get them out under 230.

Cook if he got 300 lead would have declared today itself.

You can safely defend 300 in 90 overs here with the series on line against Pak batsmen.

But problem for Cook is he won't get a 300 lead today unless something CRAZY happens in session 3.

100% agreed with the above two comments.

The same Swann who said Pak would be all out for like 250 odd in our 1st innings? And rumours are he said he would have eaten his hat if we scored 500? And 4 out of the 5 being English?

Also, Warne already called out Eng on "If you want to win, you cant be afraid to lose". So no, Warne has not even remotely implied that Pak can chase 270+. He has implied that Eng should score faster, and declare, and they have every chance to win then.

Channel 5 hv Malala on during the tea break. Bizarre ..

Bairstow is the real danger man here. I'm not that worried about Ballance. We need at least 3 in the session if we wanna win

3 in the session and they will add around 70 more and in the morning their last 3 can at least at 25 more.

How are we going to chase 260 on a day 5 pitch in 80 overs.

Match is on a knife edge. England will try to up the anti but not at the expense of giving away too many wickets.

Pakistan if they get wickets after tea will slow down England's progress and any chance of a declaration which is not happening today in any case.

Because this day 5 pitch will still behave like a day 1 batting track, as it has been throughout this test match.

Pakistan batting on a 5th day pitch - what are the odds they won't collapse ?

I ain't saying pak can't chase what I m saying is that this pitch is not that bad to how pitches used to be here before. With Pakistan yo can never be sure. One day they can chase 370 in a test match and on second day they can even fail to chase 150. That's Unfortunately how it is with us, We never are good chasers.

Tame approach by England.

Taking too much time to score runs. England are killing this match slowly.

Like we chased down 302 in 60 overs some 18 months ago.

Odd that Amir is swinging the ball a lot in the sun but wasn't getting shape under clouds . Maybe he fixed his wrist position ? Anyone know why ?

didnt see the second drop catch of hafeez, just saw on highlights he dropped Vince too.. how many did he drop today..

England's tail isn't meek like Pakistan's that it would collapse for a very low amount of runs.

around 35 36 overs can be bowled in the last session. If england go at 3.5 runs per over they can get around 125 more today.

England already have enough runs on the board. It would be extremely difficult if not impossible for Pakistan to score above 150 on a 5th day wicket against this Englidh side.

Only thing that's in favor of Pak is that England doesn't have a specialist spiner.

Sohail pumping his way to 79mph absolutely annoying

We have no world class player in any format, so why do people expect miracles.

We have no answer to players like Root, Cook, Kohli, Smith, de Villiers, Ashwin, Starc, Steyn, Anderson, Broad etc.
Lmao at sneaking in Ashwin

Yasir>Ashwin

Amir having good shape on the ball now unfortunately none of our bowlers consistently bowled well

It helps that the so called fast bowlers are maxing out at 80mph

England will score at 7/8 runs per over in last 20-25 overs. They have the batsmen to score at a brisk rate.

I agree with your post prior to that about this being tough for Pak from here. But I do not need see England scoring at almost 8 an over for 25 overs!! Maybe 10 overs, yes. But Balance is too defensive, Moeen Ali cannot attack us for that long, and JB is struggling (even physically right now). If Eng try to get that aggressive, they will not last 25 overs against our bowling. (Root could do it but he is gone)

Just now Michael Holding explained about his run up closer to stump has allowed swing
