What's new

England v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Birmingham | Aug 3-7, 2016 | Day 4

Again - like my fishing. Always my wife knows that the biggest one slipped away.

The way people are hyping Yamin, like PAK has left Keith Millar at home. He is a 120km dibly dobly without any skill with new ball, and you want him to bat at 6.

One reason PAK is in top 3 in Test (could be even 1) & 9th (could remain there for 3 more years), because Test is still almost unchanged - PAK uses the most fundamental formation - 6 ballebaaz & 4 genbaaz; I am more comfortable to keep it simple like that only 5 ballebaaz & 5 genbaaz.

Playing all-rounder is a combination game, for which you need Captain in field. Coach with a lap top can't instruct Captain in charge - bring Yamin now, bowl Azhar for 3 overs against wind, use YK as 1st change .......

Yamin can bat at 7 bro. The way he will improve his bowling by actually bowling. Also there aren't many options. You are screening for an all rounder when I give you one who could do well with proper time and investment, you dismiss him straight away.

Nope, seems England will play tomorrow's 1st session and then they will declare. Nothing in this pitch, Pak can survive 2 sessions easily.

Won't do the entirety of the session. Maybe 10 overs of slogging. That gives around 75-80 overs.

Well, those are 3 decent overs in a row for us. Only 8 runs off last 3. If we can bowl tight to end of day, Cook may come back to bat tomorrow.

England will declare overnight so we'll be chasing whatever they score today.

This is the key. But will Cook, the guy who did not enforce the follow on in the second test really do this? Dangle a carrot? I do not see it. I see them batting tomorrow (unless they got completely crazy these last 20 deliveries).

This is heading to a draw.

England will bat another 15-20 overs tomorrow and even if Pakistan's batting collapses, they should still be able to survive the 5th day.

Overall not a bad result for Pakistan

England fans really wearing out the "Please don't take me home" song. Give it a rest !

England won't declare overnight.

Last few overs they didn't slog.

Lead is 300.

Tomorrow 5 overs and lead of 330 and then they will declare.

Just looked at the score

England have just totally wrecked us

Won't be surprised if we collapse tomorrow and lose this

Bairstow the best WK batsman in Test cricket at the moment without question.

Has been England's man of the summer.

I am guessing around 10. Lead is already 303 with 3 overs to go. Will prolly be 320 by end of today. 10 overs of slogging means 380-400 target in around 75 overs (rr 5).

Either way I don't see it being a safe draw. Pakistan will lose or just about manage to save it by 2 wickets or something.

Why haven't England attacked these last 5 overs? 2 of the most defensive captains in the world going at each other

Never - it's back to back Test & 4th in less than 5 weeks. PAK won't finish with 4 bowlers on their feet if they pick only 4. It's a 2 innings match which is won by bowlers. For 20 overs game, one can pick 9 "All-rounders".
Depends on the outcome of this test. If we manage to draw it then I think management will take a safer route and don't tinkle much with the batting and take the draw in oval too and draw the series.

Because, I don't see him doing any hoodo in England.

Look, the strategy is simple - you play 4 bowlers, 2 of them has to be like Mac or Hadlee or Ambi - can't get wicket, no problem bowl 38-15-75-1.
Or play 3-2-1 combination. 3 bowlers with batting skills like Chandrashekhar or Walshi; 2 bowling all-rounders (one like Yamin/Nawaz, one may be Aamad) & a batsman who can bowl 15 overs. PAK hasn't brought anything like that.

Options are keeping MoHa puffed, or bring Iftekhar. None is encouraging proposition to be honest. So, for Oval, play 5 bowlers, as simple as that.

Going forward, in UAE against WI - play Nawaz & Aamad/Yamin + Yasir, Aamir + Ashghar/Babar/Rahat. That's 5 bowlers & depending on wicket 3 spinners or pacers. I would like PCB to man up and put some grass in the wicket so that team is not gang ra**d in 1st Test at Hamilton, going straight from UAE roads.

Babar, Sami
Azhar, YK, Asad, Sarfy,
Nawaz, Aamad/Yamin,
Aamir, Yasir, Rahat

Or Azhar swapping with Babar & YK with Misbah.

Bring it on .

Don't say that loud. I got ripped apart for saying the same with a lead of 270.:yk

Honestly 300 is more than enough and England can declare right now forcing Pakistani batsmen to face a couple of overs today but most of the captains like to play safe specially when there is still another test left.

How can you be so sure? I think Cook will bat for half an hour tomorrow in the first session and tell hus batsmen to slog.

If I were Cook, I'd want the second new ball.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Pak won't be able to score 150 let alone scoring over 300 on a 5th day wicket. Why is he so defensive? Shamebolic captaincy from cook.

Eng will wait for the century from Bairstow and then declare. I think they are eyeing for 350 lead with 80 overs to go till they declare.

That is my gut feeling too. Which is ok with me. It is almost the best case scenario for Pak at this stage. Plus if we get it down to 80 overs, no second new ball, which will be huge. Our final 4 would not survive more than a couple overs against a new ball.

Who tells you that 6 batsmen saves a Test? Oval is a true wicket - if England bats first, they might race to 600 at 4/overs - then PAK 'll fight for 12.5 sessions to save the Test, which they are not good at.

If PAK bats first, ENG might get them all-out for 400 by lunch on Day 2, then they'll bat for days & and leave PAK to save it for 5 sessions, again not encouraging with a tail that starts from No. 8 (& 1).

3rd option is taking out draw - target to win it in 4 days. Tell me the last Test outside Asia, that PAK has taken it to Day 5?

Because this is outside the subcontinent and the bowling attack is much better.

The pitch is quite flat and the spinner is Moeen not Herath, I'd be surprised if Cook doesn't bat 6-7 overs to get to 350 leaving us 80 overs to go at over 4 an over.

Cook will wait till England get 330-350 lead and let Bairstow get his ton.
