5 wickets Dale Steyn. :14: What a bowler.

England about to face their biggest defeat at home for many years.

Interesting how both Prior and broad didnt walk when both knew they had touched the ball. Thank god for DRS.

Steyn showing england and rest of world why hes numero uno bowler in the world!

Oh brainless batting. We are hopeless. Headingley should suit SA too.

Ahh well I haven't seen such one sided test matches since the Indians toured England last year or the last Ashes. Back to the drawing board.

Looks like S.A 1st ever win at the Oval, that will give them so much confidence for the rest of the series.

Crazy Stat Time:

England in their last 6 test matches have won only ONE

Not the record you would expect from a Number One Test Team!!

....looks like the 3-0 loss to Pakistan was NOT an aberration, eh, what? Would I expect the English to admit that....I will wait and see....

So you didnt watch england get hammed this winter then in the UAE :)

Steyn should try and knock anderson head off 1st before finishing him off.

So the best bowler in the world again justifies his spot.....the pretender (Anderson) was toothless in his bowling display

It does go to show that England really need a spicy pitch to make a match of it...FLAT PITCHES mean England literally do fall FLAT on their faces!!

Ok time to bring Morkel in for Philander. Jimmeh needs to head back to the pavilion to do some reflecting.

There hasn't been a true number one since the fall of the Aussies in my eyes. There has been a few pretenders that have held the spot since.

Can South Africa take it and make it theirs?

Sean says
'Great weekend for South Africans, except for those who play for England!'
Ha!

Cricbuzz.com

Do you think we will see Jonathan Trott go into the South African dressing room 'by accident' again!!

Poor performance here by English batsmen. After this innings defeat, I wonder if they will be able to bounce back as a team or not. Next test a draw will be high expectation to them.

Monty Panesar at no.11 could have been handy.

These two should try and get SA to bat again, save the innings defeat.

36 over for england to survive! would be some effort if they managed it!

Do wins against the West Indies not count???? Oh I get it...'Test' Matches against the WI are not counted by the No.1 team as 'Test' matches because they were not 'Tested'..... :jf

The number one test team is a poisoned chalice...

However, South Africa do look like genuine contenders and have the batting, bowling and fielding all covered to consistently remain the top-side with purpose..

All this means is that Pakistan will now rise to third position as well

Out of all the teams around today, Saffers are the only ones with the potential to dominate test cricket for a few years. They have the batsmen and bowlers to compete in all conditions. The only flaw is the spin bowling, Tahir is o.k but they would need another one to partner him in Asia or to cover him if he's injured.

He did that even Sachin in SA, I clearly remember him hitting Sachin with a bouncer and asking 'who's the no.1 huh?' awesome bowler.

Oh sorry let us revise that then...

So since becoming Number one test team England have won only THREE matches in 9 matches

2 against West Indies and 1 against Sri Lanka away

33% success rate from a Number One test team is not what you would expect!!

Extended session, c'mon boys!

Get Tahir off and go with the two strike bowlers!

It would be interesting to see if they can truly compete india last tour to SA showed old SA back having squared the series after being in lead (if im not mistaken) SA always competetive the problem is not able to close the deal, always bride's maid

Tim Bresnan about to experience his first loss in 15 tests. Pretty good record that.

South Africa with a comprehensive victory. England are usually good at home because of the conditions. If conditions are right then they can compete. In South Africa, due to the varying climates, it makes ALL conditions available, so they play the game not the pitch or the conditions.

England bowlers have again been found out on flat, sub-continental type wickets. Considering England lost 7 wickets for 118 runs in the 1st innings where South African bowlers managed to take wickets and swing the ball, the England bowling attack has been exposed somewhat here, but credit must be given to the South African batsmen.

What a perfect match for S Africa! Congratulations.

Well done boys!

That last ball by Tahir was pretty good, guess he's not as mediocre as the English thought he was.

I am so happy for Guru Gary!

Just matter of few months he joined with side and SA getting closer to number 1!!

Sigh! I miss him.

...to claim VALIDLY to be the number 1 test team is dependent not only upon on winning but how you rebound from a defeat like this. All England to pray for good weather for the next match so that we can find out.....

Hmmmm.

Well played SA. Can't remember a kicking that hard. Maybe a loss to WI in the Blackwash, or Australia in '93.....

Back to the drawing board for England. I think their biggest problem was that SA have found a way to negate Swann, so that put pressure on the three seamers.

I'd like to see Monty in for Swann at Headingley, and Finn in somewhere too. Show the SA batters something different.

Could be that the wheel has turned, and that the England batting must be rebuilt. Strauss is 35 and not consistent any more. KP seems about to hit career self-destruct. Bopara doesn't seem to have the temperament for tests.

Or England could win at Headingley. They do seem to respond well to getting a boot in the backside.

Good post. At least you've acknowledged that their are some pressing concerns in the English setup that need to be addressed :) Best of luck for the rest of the series bud.

The Indian fans are making us look bad :(

Gotta say England were pretty overconfident. There was no excuse for such poor batting but bowling so poorly, i think its time for them to press the panic button.

They need to stop responding and show that 'Ooohh look we are so poor and innocent, we have done nothing wrong.'

First they love to take a dig at Indians on twitter then when trolls attack they cry for 'save us' we are innocent. By responding, they are encouraging and deep down they are having fun, because you will see English fans getting involved and the weird sadistic fun in their mind begins.

Wow this is some major phainty as you guys would say. Amla making more than the entire Pom team in the 2nd dig. Saffers making a statement of intent. :133:

england got well and truely spanked! pretty much they will need to show some serious improvement in next game to get back into the series.

No don't change the side. Go with the same side. Maybe bring in another pacer for Swann as he has never picket a test wicket at headingley? look yes your team got outplayed but this is the same team which got to number 1. You have to back them.. making changes show you're weak, panicking and this will allow South Africans to knock you out. England were overconfident IMO. They thought Andersen and Broad would knock off first three wickets with the new ball, Swann would take care of the left handers and we will get into the tail which isn't strong. Things didn't work out as planned and English panicked. they forgot how they dealt with flat wickets in UAE and Sri Lanka- bowled wicket to wicket. Also, the fact that Saffers had never won at Oval made them more complacent.

Time to regroup and come back hard. Saffers usually collapse at least once in every series. Headingley conditions can trigger that collapse. Strauss and Andy Flower need to back the bowlers. No need for drastic changes.

Surprisingly, Swann has played just one test match at Headingley, taking 0-64.

Bopara might do a decent fourth seamer's job there.

The odd things are that:

1. all three of them seem to have lost a yard of pace.

2. none of them reversed it, and they have all reversed the ball at times - Anderson in Australia, Bres in various places, and I can remember Broad suddenly blowing the Aussies away with a 5fer out of nowhere. That didn't happen at the Oval.
