England is poised to face the West Indies in the third and final Test match, aiming to complete a series whitewash after taking a 2-0 lead. The first Test at Lord's saw England dominate with a convincing innings and 114-run victory, marking a fitting farewell for the illustrious career of Jimmy Anderson.

The second Test at Trent Bridge was a closer contest, but England still emerged victorious by 241 runs, with the West Indies bowled out for 143 in their second innings. The match witnessed historic milestones for England, including Shoaib Bashir becoming the first spin bowler in 18 years to take five wickets in a Test match at Trent Bridge, and Harry Brook scoring his maiden Test century on home soil. The stage is now set for the series finale in Birmingham on Friday.

England

England have named an unchanged squad for the third and final Test and could field a similar lineup from their second Test, with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett as the openers. Joe Root and Harry Brook are in fine form and there is little reason for the hosts to change a working setup.

West Indies

Led by Brathwaite, the Windies will hope for an improved performance in the third Test, with the likes of Kirk McKenzie, Kavem Hodge, and Shamar Joseph expected to feature once more.

Jeremiah Louis has been replaced in the West Indies Test squad by Akeem Jordan due to injury. Louis sustained a hamstring injury during the second Rothesay Test at Trent Bridge and has been ruled out of the series.

Jordan has been in the UK and has joined up with the squad, taking part in training on Wednesday. Louis has remained with the squad for further treatment.

Bowlers' chances will come 'naturally' - Stokes

Captain Ben Stokes says opportunities for fast bowlers will come “naturally” after England named an unchanged team for the third Test against West Indies on Friday.

The home side have already won the series 2-0 but have resisted the opportunity to recall Matthew Potts or hand a debut to Dillon Pennington at Edgbaston.

James Anderson retired after the first Test following talks with the England management, who indicated they want to build the experience of younger bowlers.

"At the moment we have stuck with the same team because we don't feel it's necessary to change," said Stokes.

Following the West Indies series, there is a break of almost a month before three Tests against Sri Lanka.

So far this summer, the only change England have made to their XI is moving on from Anderson. England's all-time leading wicket-taker played in the first Test at Lord's, then was replaced for the second Test by Mark Wood.

Since Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge of the England side two years ago, they have looked to avoid rotating their bowlers where possible.

And Stokes said it is not "difficult" for England to simultaneously play their strongest team and give opportunities to bowlers.

"When you look at the guys we've got playing at the moment, with Woody being the standout because of how he bowls, it's very unlikely we'll get the remaining Tests out of him because of how hard it is on his body," said Stokes.

"Even though we've got a decent break to the next series, fast bowling is very hard so naturally we may see a change in the bowling line-up. It's not required yet.

"It's tough to not play, but for Pottsy and Dillon it's great for them to be in the squad."

In the 241-run win in the second Test at Trent Bridge, Wood sent down the fastest over recorded by an England bowler in a home Test, at one stage registering in excess of 97mph.

He struggled with cramp in Nottingham, but has been passed fit to take his place in the side at Edgbaston.

Even though Wood only managed to take two wickets at Trent Bridge, Stokes said his Durham team-mate brings an "electric" feeling to a Test match. In West Indies' second innings, a Wood bouncer struck Kevin Sinclair, fracturing the forearm of the spinner and forcing him out of the third Test.

"The whole game changes," said Stokes. "When his name gets read out, the whole crowd is up, then when the speeds are on the big screen, everyone gets going. Woody is always looking up at the screen as well to see what he's clocking.

"He's got the heart of a lion. He runs in spell after spell, ball after ball. Although he didn't get the rewards he wanted last week, he knows he affects the game in more than just wickets. That showed last week. I think someone will pay this summer, either West Indies this game or Sri Lanka."

In Sinclair's absence, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who missed the second Test through illness, comes back into West Indies' squad of 12.

Akeem Jordan is named as cover for pace bowler Shamar Joseph, who is struggling with illness.

"It's all about fighting," said West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite. "If we continue to create that sort of attitude around this team, there will be growth. That's what we're after."

West Indies receive major boost ahead of third England Test

A key spinner looks set to return to the West Indies' XI for the final match of the series against England.

West Indies have been boosted by the return of Gudakesh Motie, with the spinner declared fit to take his place in the side for the third Test against England in Birmingham.

While the West Indies trail 2-0 in the three-match ICC World Test Championship series, they will be buoyed by the return of Motie after the left-armer missed the second Test in Nottingham due to illness.

Motie's return to full fitness is soured by an injury to fellow spinner Kevin Sinclair, who has missed out on selection due to a fractured forearm.

Sinclair was struck on the arm by a fast Mark Wood delivery and will miss the series finale, while uncapped pacer Akeem Jordan is in contention for his debut after he was called up for fellow quick Jeremiah Louis.

Despite trailing in the series, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite knows there is still plenty for his team to play for with World Test Championship points up for grabs.

“We have five Tests remaining for the year and, you know, World Test Championship points are still at stake. We have a lot to play for and that’s my thing to the boys,” Brathwaite said.

“You know, we are still in the running for the Test Championship and obviously we’re looking for points as well.”

The West Indies currently sit in last place on the World Test Championship standings and need to pick up some points in Birmingham to remain in touch with the leading teams.

I am at the ground.

England bowling quite well on what is a disappointingly dead pitch it must be said.

Wood is now touching up towards 93mph and settling into a nice rhythm in this spell.

Former West Indies bowler Ian Bishop on Sky Sports:

"It has been a fascinating first hour's play.

"As a bowler on the first morning of a Test match, you're trying to locate what is the ideal length.

"I'm told Woakes' was the shortest new ball spell for England in eight years. He has been backwards of that good length and then when he has tried to adjust, he has been too full and been driven.

"He wants to be somewhere in between."

Also, probably a better decision to bat first by Windies unlike the brainless decision last match.

Whitewash still on though.

Ian Bishop on Sky Sports Cricket:

"That is a lesson that this team is learning playing against a top nation, that you have to continue doing good work for longer periods of time, across a day, a session and a Test match, otherwise the defining line can be quite sharp.

"The opening partnership did a good job again.

"They've batted over an hour between them but the middle order now has to come up and do some work as [Kavem] Hodge and [Alick] Athanaze did at Trent Bridge."

Mark Butcher on Sky Sports Cricket:

"We saw the ball move sideways which in these atmospheric conditions you would expect, the pitch is easy paced and there's no deliveries flying through and when it does something, it doesn't do it at a high pace.

"You have to sit in there and wait. One thing with the West Indies is that there are certain players, Mikyle Louis in particular, he gives you such a large margin for error in terms of length, you can keep him quiet but he will eventually nick on which is what happened.

ECB CEO is being intereviewed by Mike Atherton. He is shedding light on the market 100 creates. He uses the word "market" a lot. That is the way it is going to be in the future. PCB should watch the interview if they can.

Even though England is strictly not a one sports nation the reception for Test cricket is still encouraging.

WI - 97/3 (26 overs).

Honors are even so far.

Not really on this pitch, which is flat.

The danger of Windies position is now apparent with the post lunch dismissals.

Always add two wickets to the score.

Former England bowler Stuart Broad, speaking on Sky Sports Cricket:

"One wicket away will be the conversation - find a way to get that wicket.

"The bouncer ploy is always an option when the ball is a bit softer.

"The message will be it takes one ball to break this open and then you're arguably into the tail.

"England will be absolutely thrilled with the situation they find themselves in on a pitch which, I think we'd all agree, is a 400 minimum."

Windies look good for 330 now ... 217/5

get the feeling that ENG will lose this one .... some naughty stuff happening . 220/5

This is a welcome addition , expert opinion

Sun is beating down. They are going to feast against inconsistent and erratic bowling. They have to use the new ball

Seales strikes. Crawley got carried away. Throwing kitchen sink at every ball. Eventually that proved to be his demise.

Drag on very next ball. Duckett. Two wickets gifted with extravagant stroke play. Absolutely nothing for bowlers lol

what a gun slip fielder Holder is for a tall bloke. He uses the reach to good advantage. Anyone else that is dropped short.

Unusually poor from crawley. Duckett is kind of a ftb, struggles whenever there is movement.
Gus looks the real deal.

Actually Crawley was playing too extravagantly. He had already hit 3 fours in a row. He was still in the mood for few fours. Went after a wrong ball. Same goes with Duckett.

Late wickets leave third Test finely poised

England lost openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett late in the evening session as they surrendered the initiative to reach 38-3 at stumps on day one of the third Test against West Indies.

Gus Atkinson had earlier taken four wickets as England’s bowlers rallied to snuff out a West Indies fightback and restrict them to 282, only for three late wickets to boost the tourists.

Crawley nicked off to Jayden Seales before Duckett inside edged Alzarri Joseph on to his own stumps the very next ball.

Nightwatcher Mark Wood was also caught in the slips off Seales (2-19) to leave Ollie Pope and Joe Root to navigate a tricky few overs before the close.

West Indies had earlier teetered precariously at 115-5 after they had won the toss, with Kraigg Brathwaite’s determined innings of 61 initially looking like nothing more than a sticking plaster at the top of the order, but they battled back.

After five wickets fell for 39 runs the momentum appeared to be with England as they sniffed the opportunity to bowl West Indies out cheaply inside two sessions.

Instead Jason Holder (59) and Joshua Da Silva (49) dug in and played with maturity as they guided West Indies towards something like a respectable first-innings total with a stand of 109.

Atkinson and Chris Woakes, who claimed three wickets, snuffed any hopes West Indies might have had of posting something more daunting.

Duckett is just a Shikhar Dhawan level FTB test batsman.

Duckett is shot a ball player. He is never going to be consistent. But if he had played conservatively he would have done worse than this. I think this strategy is to cover their defensive flaws.

Yeah irrespective of his name, he seems not good in ducking :jofra

few showers forecast for today but game has really moved on .... result in 4 days !

England will get close to WI total of 282 & then bowl out WI cheaply in the second innings. They will easily chase down the target on the 3rd day.

England looking strong to make their 1st appearance in the WTC final scheduled for next June at Lord's.

Poor decision to not give Root out lbw. That was plumb. England very lucky not to be 5 down.

Train wreck of a game for England. wafting, swishing when there is seam movement on offer. Proper test match cricket application required.

100 runs lead and it's going to be very difficult to chase in the 4th innings

Alzaari is a crap bowler. Doesn't have the skills that Seales and Shamar has. He just has pace.

54/5 is England’s lowest score at the fall of the fifth wicket in home Tests in the Bazball era

Sangakkara just said "Saqlain mushtaq took quiet a lot of wickets with no ball". INteresting fact.

Is this a tougher batting pitch than it looks? Can’t tell. Or is it just flat.

Most of Windies wickets were avoidable, also Crawley and Duckett both had a shocker, and Brook’s shot wasn’t very good either.

Wickets are falling in clumps for a reason here.
Maybe just poor batting.

Sangakkara just said "Saqlain mushtaq took quiet a lot of wickets with no ball". INteresting fact.

Not sure about no balls but Saqlain used to vary his release points a lot in the latter half of his career - sometimes delivering from well behind the crease etc.

So I wouldn't be too surprised by this.

Ball change shenanigans have started

Only England ever do this though ;)

With movement gone this has turned into an absolute road. These two can bat as long as they want. They need to commit mistakes as ball is not doing anything. Bowlers are out of ideas
