Overview
England v India
Lord's, London
2nd Test
Thursday, 9 August, 10:00 GMT, 11:00 local

England came out on top at Edgbaston but only just – by 31 runs – in what was a thriller, where teams wrestled back and forth for the advantage before England finally got the better of Virat Kohli's men.

There were plenty of positives in both camps – Kohli's 149 and 51 in the game, R Ashwin's seven wickets in the match and Ishant Sharma's five-wicket haul in the second innings for India, and Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow's half-centuries, Sam Curran's all-round Player of the Match performance (87 runs and five wickets) and Ben Stokes' match-winning spell on the fourth day for England.

So, while England have the momentum and the advantage of playing at home, they will be aware that India ran them close in Birmingham and are capable of doing the same at Lord's, a venue where they won their last encounter, in 2014.

All isn't rosy for either side, though. A low-scoring match at Edgbaston meant batsmen on both sides had to counter some quality swing bowling, and barring Kohli, Root, Bairstow and Curran, not many could play a knock of significance. The most important of these, perhaps, was Curran's match-turning 65-ball 63 in the second innings, after having come in at 86/6 (effectively 100/7 with the first-innings lead) and England in a spot.

England finished on 180, setting India 194 to win – a chaseable target by all means – but the Indian batsmen faltered against some high-quality swing bowling and were bowled out for 162. The next highest score after Kohli's 51 was Hardik Pandya's 31.

England were better than India but not by much, as barring Root's 80 and Bairstow's 70, the batsmen were found wanting in the first innings. Dawid Malan has since faced the consequences of a string of low scores – 8, 20, 6, 28 and 7 in his last five innings – and some lapses in the slips as he lost his place in the team. Replacing him is the 20-year-old Ollie Pope, who will jump straight into the XI at No.4.

An improvement on the batting front will be on both sides' agenda for this game. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane – the core of India's batting, all of whom made low scores in Edgbaston – will have to hit form sooner rather than later, as must Alastair Cook – who was dismissed off identical deliveries by Ashwin in both innings, and Jos Buttler.

England are also without Stokes for this game as the all-rounder has a court hearing to attend, which began on Monday 6 August and is expected to last for around a week. Chris Woakes has been named Stokes' replacement but Moeen Ali could well get the nod ahead of Woakes in hot and dry conditions at Lord's. That decision will be confirmed at the toss.

India could ponder bringing in one of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav and field a two-pronged spin attack along with Ashwin by giving a break to one of the fast bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah, who excelled in his debut Test series in South Africa, was also in contention but bowling coach Bharat Arun has ruled out his participation in the Lord's Test.

But bowling isn't much of a worry for India; batting is. Kohli scored 200 of the 436 runs that India made in the match, and India had lost half their side by 100 in both innings. While Kohli rallied the lower order along in the first innings to get India close to England's first-innings total, he might not be able do it repeatedly. The other batsmen have to come good.

Key Players

Sam Curran (England): The all-rounder impressed one and all in just his second Test and bagged the Player of the Match award. With his ability to swing the ball prodigiously and score runs lower down the order, the youngster is asset to this England side and may fill the Stokes-sized gap.

Virat Kohli (India): India will be hoping that their captain courageous comes good once again, having seen how heroically he took them within touching distance of a victory – 200 runs in the game have also propelled his erstwhile average of 13.40 in England, and he will look to build on that.

Conditions

London is expected to hot and dry owing to the heat wave in England. However, it is expected to be cool on the first day of the game and there are chances of some rain. So the team that wins the toss may prefer to field first. The pitch is expected to assist both seam and spin, as it did in Edgbaston, but is likely to be spinner-friendly and India may look to take advantage.

Squad

England: Joe Root (c), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Alastair Cook, Sam Curran, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, Jamie Porter

India: Virat Kohli (c), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, M Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur

What will India do if they win toss? If they bat first they collapse, If they bat last they collapse :dw

If IND is to win this Series, they MUST win this Test - it has to be a win, not draw. In recent times, ENG's results at Lord's are not that great, while next 2 Tests are at Nottingham & Southampton - unless IND wins this Test, by the time Series reaches Oval, ENG might be out of reach.

Last 4 County games this season has produced scores like -

April: MS 214 & 159; Nor's 71 & 142
April: MS 194; G'Goan 38/4
May: MS 455/8D, Gloster 210 & 326/4
July: MS 236 & 242; Warwick 276 & 184

Apart from that PAK beat Poms by 9 wickets inside 3.5 days, after Root electing to bat first.

First 3 tosses were uncontested (another joke) & every visitor put Middlesex in; while in last game hosts won the toss and batted first to win by narrow margin. Wickets were dominated by seemers and only in July game Jeetan Patel took a 5for in 3rd innings.

This gives a decent idea about the wicket - it's a bit soft wicket with decent grass coverage, that helps seemers on day 1, but, it gets faster on Day 2 & 3; eventually there will be some turn. Since it's a hot summer, I think it'll be better batting surface than the past FC games.

May be losing the toss isn't a bad option here, because I am not sure which is better - IND bat first or 2nd. Ashwin scare might suggest IND to bat first, but last time Rahne played a wonderful innings at Lord's on Day 1, otherwise ENG could have started their 1st innings before Tea, on Day 1. If IND bats first, similar effort needed to bat 100+ overs (duration is important, because if it ends in 3 days, Ashwin won't come much into play) - if Poms bat on Day 1, they'll have a massive advantage. If IND bats 2nd, they must ensure that, ENG doesn't score more than 275 in 1st innings. Ideally, IND would like to keep ENG batting at very slow rate, so that they can get them all-out for 100+ overs, so that the 2nd morning is faced by Pom tail. ENG all-out for 225 in 75 overs and then IND top order faces 12 overs on Day 1 evening & another 13 before 1st drinks on Day 2 ... IND might go to Lunch 105/6.

For ENG, it depends on who is picked - if they Pick Woakes, they might bowl first; but in Moeen is picked, certainly ENG will bat first. Ideally, ENG should bat first, and try to end Day 1 at something like 302/6, and bowl at least 10-12 overs before Lunch on Day 2, when wicket still is a bit juicy.

Fascinating contest waiting, between two equally matched top teams on English condition. For me, biggest positive for ENG (negative for IND) is that, Root got run-out when well set and Cook failed both times; while Kohli batted one his best innings and Ashwin had his best game outside Asia - still ENG won.

I like to watch matches where there is a threat of a wicket falling any moment. I hope this is one such match. Might not be good for weak hearts.. but such games are the ones people remember rather than run fests.

So it will have something for spinners/pacers.

I expect India to go with 2 spinners. Hopefully it's Kuldeep and not Jadeja.

Kuldeep should be in for Pandya.Don’t think they will pick Pujara due to his horrible FC form.

The team should be ideally this:

Vijay
Rahul
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Pant
Ashwin
Ishant
Kuldeep
Shami
Yadav

Nair should have been tried in previous match instead of Dhawan and seen if he was better enough to replace Pujara/Rahane. There was nothing to lose in the previous match as things were predictable (Dhawan's failure). But now with one down India should go with safe ploy and bring back Pujara as his marathon 2(86) now looks better than match getting finished in 3.5 days! Let's see if Pujara has learnt anything now! Also unfortunately Bumrah is injured otherwise we would have got those 3 seamers & kept Pandya away! Still I don't want Pandya in the side... In next matches India should go with 6 batsmen, if batting keeps struggling and the 6th batsman should be specialist batsman!

Anyhow I guess Shastri/Kohli have other ideas to bamboozle everyone!

If these bunch of players are so out of form and untrustworthy then India should quickly look at other options in next series, really it is going out of way (M.Agarwal, P.Shaw, S.Gill...

Hope Rahul's career kicks off from today. Everyone knows he is much more talented than Kohli but now time to put all that talent into some runs.

Sorry everyone doesn't know that... Also talent comes into picture only after its executed & shown. Even then it is not assured! Because you need to perform on a specific month, against specific attack (no bowlers should be injured), no catches should be dropped, umpires should be not biased, etc, etc... So many criteria to be fulfilled... Till then you will be inferior to left handed Babar, right handed Anwar, middle-handed Miandad, etc!

Pakistan won the test match here in Lords...if India cant win here, it will be proven Pak is a better test team in English conditions.

It is only Indian PP'ers who will be under this pressure! Actual players today don't know about this fact. The only thing that is affecting them is the Shastri/Kohli regime and their out-of-the-box ideas! India has won matches in much tougher conditions and challenges before...

So we should not try to win here because we have already proved we can win in much tougher conditions? Team has lot at stake. Number 1 team has to prove itself everytime and in every match.

Let Rahul score 1k run at > 70 average in a calendar year then compare him to Kohli. Kohli had to wait until 2012 to be compared to Tendulkar. Rahul hasn't done anything yet to receive such praise.

Rahul has just played around 25 tests , bigger sample size is needed to know his true worth.
Regarding your question in other thread, , i use excel plugin "Forum Table Maker".

Not looking good at all.

After all the heatwave and temperatures of mid-30s, come the test match and we are looking at the day 1 getting washed out!

I think this test will be washed away. A bad news for India. Their best bet is at Lords and Oval.

If Lords get washed away, England to win this 3-1.

Bad news for England. They could have gone 2-0 up easily in this test. :mv

India will escape a whitewash this series, thanks to rain

Any chance of play today? ANy way, it's better to be rained off on Day 1 than Day 4 - still they can make-up 8 overs in each of next 4 days.

Most of our bowlers are vegetarian but i can see very few veg options. No wonder we underperform overseas.

Most Eng players rate Lords lunches as one of the best going.

Another reason for their poor record here?

Another site also posted a menu which is different to this and it has a variety of vegetarian dishes, in fact they're all vegetarian dishes.

Two out of the six options of main course are not just vegetarian but Indian vegetarian. That's got to be more than sufficient.

Just out of curiosity-

Ben Stokes was set to miss this match if the match had started yesterday but since toss has not taken place yet and final eleven has not been named so he can play this match. Can anybody confirm?

yes he can but unlikely

Fully expect us to be bundled out for 120, once Kohli gets out.

Anderson and Woakes especially will kill us.

So Woakes, Kuldip and Pujara in and dhawan and umesh out. Let's see whether the Yadav exchange helps India :13:

But why has he dropped Umesh ?

He is is the onky one who could be replaced for Kuldeep.

Pandya is undroppable...

Dhawan for Pujara was logical. The1 is useful only on flat pitches.

I for one am excited to watch Anderson...ooooohhh thriller!

Vijay has become a liability since the last few series. We need to look ahead and blood some youngster

C'mmon Rahul....stage is set for you to show your class to the world

Class?

I really hope to see what all the hype is about.. If he plays out Anderson's first spell I might start believing a bit in him... but so far he seems well below Kohli's class.

Totally seaming conditions and the duke ball showing what it can do in these conditions. Good luck 😉 ind

Does anyone know if the Lord's player's menu offers halal options? Can imagine they cater for Muslims when team like Pakistan/Bangaldesh visit or players like Moeen, Adil Rashid, Amla and now the likes of Shami...

KL seems to be in good zone. I think he'll score

From what I have heard he looks good for a short while and then plays a reckless shot to get out. Cannot concentrate for long periods.

This year's series will be a trial by fire for him.

Spot on man

England slip fielders better get their hands warm. they cannot afford kohli to get another hundred

Fish and veg options.

If Kohli gets out early then even 100 could be a challenge. Pujara meanwhile even at the end of 50th over will be busy taking of the shine of the new ball.

This will be a drawn test with rain forecast for whole sunday and monday. India need to win at Trent bridge to level the series

Excuses!

You guys should dial down on the hype.

Rain....again..... This is not good. England is missing out on 2-0

These are insane batting conditions. The ball which Rahul got out was an 85 mph leg break.
If you think excuses...I cant help.
