Seems that MI5 had files on Saville and Cyril Smith, but the DPP buried these.

Thatcher tried to get Saville a Knighthood five times and was only successful on the fifth attempt, as the Civil Service knew something was wrong about him and kept knocking her back.

When the prime Minister himself, along with (allegedly) some govt. ministers, MP's, (allegedly) members of the judiciary, and even senior military officers, as well as some of the most famous celebrities (eg Jimmy Saville) linked to various paedophile rings with common members, having the odd Ex-deputy director of MI6 also part of the same paedophile gangs is not such a big surprise.

How else do you think none of them were prosecuted for so long? In fact who would even dare to prosecute a member of such a ring, knowing that they will jump to protect each other as a means of self preservation.

The only surprise is the obvious efforts still being made to protect these individuals even after they've been long dead - but that's also probably to safeguard the family name since most of them will now have offspring or family members in high positions and will ensure that the family name is not tarnished.

I can only imagine that the DPP was too craven to start an action that could have brought down a Government. He could have done it, he had all the ammo from MI5.

That's evading the being point made above , ie those involved were so spread out and ingrained into the upper echelons of the Establishment (politicians, judiciary, civil service, police...), along with the fact that not everyone's identities were known, one has to assume that whilst the main reason was so as not to bring the fabric of power and government of the UK into disrepute, there has to be an element of not knowing who would block any legal action and destroy or manipulate the evidence (eg the Geoffrey Dickens dossier given to Home Secretary Sir Leon Brittan)

Only a couple of nights ago on Newsnight, Lord Armstrong, Sir Edward Heath's former private secretary, was demanding an inquiry into why the allegations against Ted Heath were even investigated under Operation Conifer since he's already dead and "as he's unable to defend himself".

Lord Hunt of Wirral - Chairman of The Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation- said the "deeply flawed" Operation Conifer report by Wiltshire Police leaves an "urgent need for an independent judge-led inquiry", "Sir Edward's reputation has been unfairly tarnished"

Lord Lawson, who has also called for a review into the "grotesque misuse of large sums of public money" by the investigation. Meaning there should not be any investigation. Presumably in case any more skeletons are uncovered?

As you can see, there's many who want to put a lid on it and bury everything whilst hoping that another Jimmy Saville type revelations doesn't open up everything all over again.
