Christians attacked at dinner party in India

MUMBAI – In India, police and a mob barged into a Christian family dinner gathering after members were accused of “forced conversion” in the state of Jharkhand.

According to a July 26 report in The Indian Express (TIE), when members of the Christian community were having dinner to mark the end of a 21-day fasting prayer, over 100 people, accompanied by police, barged into a Christian family dinner gathering at a Jamshedpur housing society, alleging that religious conversion was taking place.

However, police later said they found no evidence of conversion. Some residents of the housing society where the dinner was being held raised concerns over what they claimed were suspicious gatherings in two flats, where around 50 people were present, the report stated.

Jitu Lima, a pastor from the local church in Govindpur told TIE that 40-50 individuals, mostly relatives and acquaintances of church members from other states, were staying in two flats at during the fasting prayer period observed by their fellowship.

“No prayer meeting or religious activity was taking place at the time. The flats were being used only for lodging, and everyone had gathered for dinner as it was the concluding day. From small children to the elderly, everyone was present,” he said.

“Suddenly, a mob, along with police personnel, barged into the flats and began questioning the gathering. After about three hours of inquiry, they took six people to the police station,” Lima told the newspaper.

A church member, speaking on the condition of anonymity told TIE the group was harassed by the mob and that some were beaten after being taken to the Golmuri police station.

“For about three hours, we were confined to the room. At around 12.30 am, six of us, including me, were taken to the station. There, some of us were slapped and beaten,” he claimed. He alleged that a senior police officer beat them and asked them why they were “converting people.”

Golmuri Station House Officer (SHO) Rajendra Kumar said he was “not aware” of anyone being assaulted.

“I am not aware of that. I offered them water and treated them respectfully. It is possible that when I stepped out, someone from the society may have assaulted them,” Kumar said.

Jharkhand state has a large proportion of India’s marginalized tribal people, who exist outside of Hinduism’s traditional caste system, and many of them become Christian – Jharkhand has a Christian population of over 4 percent, double the national average.

The state is currently ruled by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has previously ruled the state. The BJP is the ruling party of India, and is a promoter of Hindu nationalism – and religious minorities often accuse it of discrimination.

Father Ajaya Kumar Singh, a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar and a civil rights activist. He is known for his involvement in advocating for the rights of Christians in Kandhamal, particularly after the 2008 anti-Christian violence.

“What happened in Jamshedpur is outrageous. A peaceful Christian family dinner was invaded by police and a mob, all over a rumour of conversion. This is not just harassment — it’s a warning sign,” he said.

“We are witnessing the slow but steady dismantling of our constitutional guarantees. Freedom of religion and the right to assemble peacefully are not optional — they’re protected rights. Yet, time and again, anti-social elements, emboldened by political silence and police complicity, violate these rights with impunity,” Singh added.

“This didn’t happen in a BJP-ruled state. That should scare us more. It means hate is not confined to one party—it’s being enabled across the board,” the priest continued.

“We must demand accountability. We must protect our minorities. We must prevent another Kandhamal from ever happening again. We must stop the Persecution of Christians and we must speak up before another Kandhamal happens,” he said.

Kandhamal is a district of the eastern Indian state of Odisha, formerly known as Orissa, where an orgy of violence descended upon the impoverished Christian minority in August 2008. A series of riots led by radical Hindus left roughly 100 people dead, thousands injured, 300 churches and 6,000 homes destroyed, and 50,000 people displaced, many forced to hide in nearby forests where more died of hunger and snakebites.

AC Michael, the National Coordinator of United Christian Forum, India (UCF India) said these kinds of false accusations by the mob accompanied by police “are becoming a norm in our country because of political patronage.”

“If the trend is not stopped immediately, it will threaten the identity and existence of the Indian Christian community in their motherland” he told Crux.

“Across India incidents of violence against Christians have become the hotspots of viral hate, brutal mob violence, rampant social Ostracization in which elements of the law and justice apparatus are complicit,” Michael said.

Amit Shah grilled for police-Hindutva collusion in anti-Christian attacks

UCF records 834 incidents in 2024, 706 till November 2025 in India

New Delhi: Amid a sharp rise in hate crimes against Christians in India, the United Christian Forum (UCF) has written an urgent letter to Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, warning of an alarming escalation in targeted violence and hostility against the Christian community with the collusion of police in several states.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the UCF said it recorded at least 834 incidents of violence against Christians in 2024 and 706 incidents up to November 2025, describing the trend as “deeply disturbing” and reflective of a systematic pattern of persecution. In the letter, UCF National Coordinator A.C. Michael said propaganda of forced religious conversions remain the primary trigger for attacks, with Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh emerging as the most affected states.

Citing reports by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), the forum said that police often side with Hindutva groups, ignore complaints by Christian victims, and allow prayer meetings to be disrupted while worshippers are harassed and intimidated. It said such conduct by law enforcement has emboldened Hindutva elements and created a climate of impunity.

The letter exposed grave incidents of burial-related violence in tribal areas, saying that Christians are denied burial space, subjected to forced exhumations, threatened with violence and coerced into “ghar wapsi.” Referring to incidents in Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand, the forum said these acts have fostered an environment of fear rather than dignity for minority communities.

The UCF strongly criticised anti-conversion laws enforced in several states, arguing that these laws are being misused to target religious minorities and undermine constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion, equality and conscience. It recalled Indian Supreme Court observations that peaceful religious gatherings, Bible preaching and charity work do not constitute unlawful conversion, warning that continued prosecutions amount to an abuse of the criminal justice process.

The forum urged New Delhi to provide systematic training on human rights and religious freedom standards to police forces and the judiciary.

The UCF said the Modi regime must issue advisories to repeal anti-conversion laws and ensure functional Human Rights and Minority Commissions in every state through transparent, non-partisan appointments. It further demanded compensation for victims falsely accused or attacked for their faith and urged implementation of long-pending recommendations of minority rights bodies.

The letter follows a spate of hate incidents ahead of Christmas, including reports from Jabalpur where a local BJP functionary was seen harassing a visually impaired Christian woman over conversion allegations, and from Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar where Bajrang Dal activists allegedly confronted Christians wearing Santa Claus hats and forced them to leave.

Good post and agree with this last para.

However, it is same for Islamist Jihadis right? They claim to be muslims but has given up on religion, rejects actual teachings of Islam and adopt the path of terrorism.

How is it the same? Are you saying Islamist jihadis are actually hindutvas in disguise?

Might be better just to discuss each on their own merits. If you have genuine belief in hindutva respect for Christianity, you would not need to resort to outlandish whataboutism.

Guys who really want to derail this thread, please bump relevant threads like Islam vs Christianity etc to save your time and posts.

No because you are very quick to pass judgement on Hindutvas that they dont probably represent the actual teachings of hindusim which I kind of agree. At the same token, the Islamist terrorist world wide also dont follow the actual preachings of Islam. Considering the number of Hindutva fanatics are miniscule compared to Islamist terrorist, being a fellow muslim you should be condemning the later more. However, I never see that to be the case.

Sharing articles from year 1999 is not derailing this thread is it?

There is already a thread exist on treatment of minorities in India. Not sure why this thread is even needed and not merged with one.

Then again, I am not questioning you. You free to moderate the way you like. However, I also should be given the same chance the respond to any outlandish allegations. Using this thread as propaganda with 1999, 2008 articles to spread lie that India is intolerant towards minorities will be responded accordingly. Posters like us will never let it go.

One sided propaganda must never be allowed. You put forward a charge, have the patience to hear the response back. Thats all I ask for.

Topic: RSS attacked Christian minorities in India.

Do not derail the thread with off-topic nonsense. :inti

Condemn it without if and but. Embrace self-accountability.

Derail my foot. We know what happens to Christians in peaceful nations. :dw :dw

This incident is from 2024 and the name of the guy that was attacked is Shubhran Paswan who is not a Christian.

@The Bald Eagle - is this not propaganda or derailing the OP?

I thought this thread is about this specific incident and not all minority attacks than happened in India since 1999?

Alarm as Hindu vigilante groups target Christmas celebrations in India

Online videos show Hindu groups harassing Christians and disrupting celebrations

Christian and human rights organisations have sounded alarm over alleged attempts by Hindu far-right groups to disrupt Christmas celebrations in India, amid a series of attacks targeting members of the minority community.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of India said it “unequivocally condemned” what it described as an “alarming” rise in targeted attacks on Christians across the majority Hindu country.

The organisation said it had recorded several incidents involving the harassment of carol singers, congregations, and church gatherings.

Human rights organisations also accused Hindu vigilantes of vandalising churches, ransacking Christmas decorations and threatening people celebrating Christmas at multiple places.

Christian watchdog Open Doors said it had recorded over 60 alleged attacks targeting Christians across India during the Christmas period.

A video from Jabalpur in the central state of Madhya Pradesh showed Anju Bhargava, identified as a local leader of prime minister Narendra Modi’s BJP party, harassing and assaulting a visually impaired Christian woman attending a Christmas programme.

The video caused outrage, with the opposition Congress party describing it as an example of “cruelty and insensitivity”.

The outrage led the Jabalpur chapter of the BJP to issue a notice to Ms Bhargava, seeking an explanation for her actions.

“We have asked Anju Bhargava to explain her conduct as seen in the video,” the party’s local head Rakesh Sonkar said. “She has been given seven days to submit her response.”

Ms Bhargava denied any wrongdoing, claiming she acted on information from local “activists” who said visually impaired women were being held against their will in a dilapidated structure near a church.

Police, however, said that no formal complaint had been registered in connection with the incident.

Another video from the eastern state of Odisha purportedly showed a group of Hindu men harassing roadside vendors selling Santa caps. They objected to “Christian items” being sold in a “Hindu” country.

“Being Hindus, how can you do this?” one of them was heard admonishing the vendors.

“Wrap up quickly and go away from here. If you have to sell anything, sell Lord Jagannath’s merchandise.”

In the national capital Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area, a group of men allegedly linked to the Hindu vigilante group Bajrang Dal was seen in a video harassing women wearing Santa caps. They accused the women of roaming the streets with the intention of converting people to Christianity.

Open Doors said “these troubling incidents have reinforced the uncertainty and fears of many Christians as they seek to celebrate the peaceful Christmas season”.

The organisation noted that the incidents included far-right Hindu groups disrupting a Christmas celebration in Haryana, claiming it was being used to lure people to convert to Christianity.

The Catholic Bishops Conference said that it had urged federal home minister Amit Shah to ensure strict enforcement of the law and proactive protection for Christian communities, so that Christmas could be celebrated peacefully.

The organisation condemned “the alarming rise in attacks on Christians in various states of our country during the Christmas season”.

It was “particularly shocked” by Ms Bhargava’s alleged behaviour and called for action against her.

“These targeted incidents, especially against peaceful carol singers and congregations gathered in churches to pray, gravely undermine constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and the right to live and worship without fear,” it said.

The United Christian Forum said it had recorded over 600 incidents of alleged attacks against Christians across India this year, including mob assaults, demolition of houses, and disruption of prayers.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a vigilante group linked to the Hindu far-right ecosystem that includes the country’s ruling party, urged Hindus not to participate in Christmas festivities.

General secretary Surendra Gupta said in a letter last month that participating in the festivals of other religions “may lead to social acceptance of other faiths”, adding that the directive was intended to “culturally awaken” Hindus.

Christians account for around 2.3 per cent of India’s population of 1.4 billion, making them Christianity the third-largest religion after Hinduism and Islam.

Christian groups have repeatedly complained of attacks and harassment by Hindu vigilante groups aligned with the BJP, allegations the party has previously rejected.

This it’s so sad . Hatred exists between people but rarely you see hatred spewed on a special day . I can’t recall a majority religion abusing minorities on Diwali but these folk have caused trouble on Eid too .

If they feel strongly their religion is the only acceptable truth then prove it .

Yup. There are thousands of minority persecution incidents in India. Minorities are regularly getting attacked by hindu extremists.

there is a slow genocide going on in India. World should hold India accountable.

This is Riligous Terrorism. Surely, the Christians, Sikhs, and other minorities deserve their own state to practice whatever they want with freedom!

Sanghis are indeed religious extremists/terrorists. This is one of the biggest evils since the Nazis.

Hopefully Khalistanis will get their own country soon. China is also likely to grab Arunachal Pradesh. Not a matter of if but when.

A smaller and balkanized India has become essential to reduce conflicts in subcontinent. :inti

Shame on those who are defending it on this thread

Sanghis cheer when Gaza civilians get massacred. They cheer when Muslims die. They bury their heads in the sand when minorities are persecuted in India.

They have demonstrated they are a bunch of indecent people with no moral compasses. Being beghairat comes naturally to them. :inti

They are some of the worst of humanity without a doubt.

Our PM celebrated Christmas too bro

Think posting head of state celebrating a minority festival is not a true reflection of the society. You need to reflect how systematic discrimination happen against minorities. I dont think anyone in their right mind ever thinks minorities gets better treatment in Pakistan compared to India. Even Indian minorties dont think that way and hence their population is increasing all the time where as Pakistan has the recorded worst record in treating minorities.

I am not blaming your beloved party in power for this though. This is the case since the formation of Pakistan. But just saying PM celebrating Christmas is nothing but a photo OP.
