"I don't know who Sachin Tendulkar is" : Maria Sharapova

Mailonline will publish every news story, it won't make the print version which is what most people read. Just look at some of the comments in the reply section to get a better idea

Who is he???? Cricket? Boring game!

My point is, go to any country outside India and ask Who Sharapova or This cricket guy are, the majority will identify Sharapova and more than 90% will struggle to identify this Sanchin guy.. And Maria is not even anywhere near a Tennis icon. That should tell you where cricket ranks in terms if World Sports.

How pathetic. Tennis is played over most of the globe, cricket by a handful of ex colonial countries. Do many Indians know the best living Russian ice hockey player or NFL quarterback (depending which culture Sharapova is most allied to these days)? I suspect not.

But you said : It didn't make news over here at all.

Give it a rest, you know I can play this game well.

You play whatever game you like, I'm just telling you that the average Brit would have no idea about this story. Even I didn't notice it until it had stormed to 6 pages in a few hours due to irate Indian members. Just ask any of the native Brits here and they will tell you the same.

On SRT's and Afridi's picture people are commenting who is sitting with Shahid Afridi. Not only pakistanis but also some aussies on the cricket australia page. :)))

Its hilarious. The whole world is trolling.

Some Indian's are cry babies & drama queens man. I can see a Bollywood movie out of this in the near future.

Yeah, where the hero (Sachin) on learning that the heroine (Sharapova) did not know him, him being the biggest cricket star in the world....plans a trip with his two friends/sidekicks to Russia. They start a cricket club there....soon the sport takes off and start making headlines....One day, Sharapova learns about this game from her cousin/sidekick who is planning to attend the game and meet the cricketing genius who started the cricket craze in Russia. She tags along with her....when she learns that he is the same guy she did not know a few years back when asked by a reporter after a game and remembers how her FB page got vandalized by Indians. She first gets very mad but then intrigued when Sachin tells her he was in love with her all long and when he learned that she don't even know his name, he got heart broken and decided to come to Russia to spread cricket like polio so Russians eventually get to know him. They have a good laugh about it. Post game Sachin throws a party where he breaks into a dance number with 100 extras dancing in unison to something like "Shara Shara....tera naam dil pe likh liya". Sharapova becomes overwhlemed and break into "Sachin Sachin...ap tu hum ne bhi dil pe tera naam likh liya"......the video goes viral on youtube....Indians are seen celebrating on the streets, Holi style....dancing and singing, like their honor in the world has just been restored.....Sachin asks Sharapova for her hand, she agrees but tell him to stay in Russia and continue to oversee the promotion of cricket. In comes Putin....he hears of this British game gaining popularity in his native motherland. He tries to sabbotage Sachin's club, even have KGB make death threats to him. Our hero Sachin does not budge as Sharapova wants her to continue spreading the germ of cricket in Russia. Putin gets depserate, he kidnaps Sharapova and tell Sachin to leave or he will have her send out a tweet from her twitter account about how she hates Indian movies. Knowing full well that if this tweet ever happens, his whole country will be against Sharapova and he would never be allowed to marry her or if he did, will be disowned by the Indian nation. He decides to leave Russia....teary eyed and singing a sad song with a muffler and leather jacket, sitting on a iceberg, he gently weeps "Shara Shara...." same song but in a slow and depressing tone. He flies back to India and slowly starts to pick up the pieces of his life.....He still fondly remembers Sharapova and watches her games on his massive TV screen.....he slowly realizes how moronic this whole patriotism thing is in the first place that made her leave Sharapova. One day he is asked to speak to a graduating class and he lets it all out, recnouncing his love for India.....he tells the crowd his whole story...the crowd is seen shocked, mouths open but at the end of his speech, they are seen crying and teary eyed...one person starts to clap and then before you know it the whole crowd starts clapping.....A smile comes across Scahin's gloomy face....crowd chants "Go get Shara! Go get Shara!....he runs out, takes the first slight to Russia and end right in Shara's arms....Putin is seen grinding his teeth in a distance....Love wins in the end....patriotism and nationalism is defeated. The End.

What the hell. Subtle trolling. :)))

Lol at people arguing about endorsements and how many times someone made it onto the cover of a magazine.

Are these guys sharing their fame and money with you? If the answer is no, then sthu and get a life.
Exactly. Some people proudly tell their fav. stars incomes as if they have a share in it lol. :D

Can't blame her, after getting abuse from so many indians, this reaction was expected

It was hard to read in one paragraph but what a story lol. Try writing scripts for bollywood movies please.

Did you create it ?

It's impossible to imagine any sports star using such language in public sites. It will be a PR disaster for her. She has only 2 tweets in July and it's very easy to check that the posted screenshot is a fake one. Took me 10 seconds to check it. Poor Photoshop is a dead give away and then this language leaves very little doubt. Here are two tweets she made in July.

https://twitter.com/MariaSharapova

Anyway, I don't understand why it's an issue with Indians here. Majority of folks in Maria's country won't know about cricket. I guess there are enough idiots in 1+ billion population.

:))) at all the posters here. Of course the tweet is fake but it riled up many indians as well. This is so easy. *speaks in morarity's voice* :misbah :afridi :yk

Rubbish english used in that tweet.

That itself is a dead giveaway.

Also the post would have far exceeded Twitter's 140 odd characters.

Maria be like, aint no body got time fo dat. :>

No offence, but some indians have gave a very horrible face to indian people. Disgraceful behavior.

Come on. Spamming a facebook page will be among the last in things that can be deemed disgraceful. There are many other things which give a bad name to indians (corruption, religion intolerance, misogyny, foeticide etc), poor internet behavior is the least among them.

Normally, this would have been expected. That shows the class of her not to resorting to what Sachinistas did. I just became aware of the recent situation. From what i have read, Sachinistas crossed all the limits, even though i am not surprised, but targetting on celebrity like this is not the way to go which doesn't represent very well when it comes to image of India. This time, Sachinistas is not just few people anymore given the worship status of Tendulkar in India, Allahu Alim.

Plus, i don't know Maria Sharapova. Now i know her. Not good job, Sachinistas.

Indian media did the same with Zaid Hamid, and mind you, he was nobody before Indian media recognized him as one of their Bollywood superstars. :jf

Should Indians be banned from Facebook/Twitter? Or if outright banning is not possible, some strict checks need to be placed on them when people signing up from Indian IPs.

Some sort of a questionnaire to assess their mentality so that they don't damage social media later on occasions like these.

You think Pakistanis, Bangalis or Lankans or people from other regions are any different? If it's an issue related to national pride or belief, they would most likely react the same way.

I really do not understand why people need others' approval to feel worthy? Any cricket fan would know players like Sachin, Lara, Ponting and their worthiness as cricket legends.

People behave the same way on forums too. Some people curb and restructure their opinions based on what others in the forum would deem popular or worthy. Some people need approval of bunch of random strangers on the internet to feel popular, social and worthy of him/herself and their construct. Why??

Why the Indian cries? I support Mario Sharapova regarding what she said. What? is she suppose to worship this Sachin or something? she just proven the fact how unpopular the sport and boring Cricket is. Most of the world has not even heard of this Sachin guy and don't like Cricket. No wonder Indians are butt-hurt lol

I do not know whether it has something to do with their economic status (as large emerging markets), but quite a few people from the BRIC nations do act in such insecure manner on the web (Brazil/India/China). Anything detected as a slight towards their country is jumped upon by net users with threats, absurd comparisons and exaggerated boasts

The average Brit may not be aware of a lot of things, that is not the point. You said it did not make any news at all, and now looking for excuses.

I don't think he meant it literally..................

But quite an important and captivating discussion you two are having regardless...

The End.

If only real life was like a bollywood movie. Love would win and not defeated.

He tries to sabbotage Sachin's club, even have KGB make death threats to him. what a gem of a post.. Will post it maria's page.. :-)
her page still gets beaten btw

Sachin Tendulkar, the wise man that he is, told NDTV that he didn't expect tennis Maria Sharapova to know who he was since the Russia ace didn't follow cricket.

In an exclusive chat on Tuesday, the retired cricket legend said: "Sharapova's comments were not disrespectful. She doesn't follow cricket."

A section of Tendulkar's fans created a massive hue and cry after media reports said the tennis Grand Slam champion wasn't aware of Tendulkar's name.

During Wimbledon, when Sharapova was asked at her post-match press conference is she knew that a cricket icon had come to see her play, the five-time Grand Slam champion said she had met David Beckham a few times but wasn't familiar with Tendulkar.

"Sachin Tendulkar was the other person who came in at the same time as David. Do you know who Sachin is?" The French Open winner flatly replied: "I don't."

Tendulkar is a regular visitor at the Royal Box during Wimbledon. He is a good friend of Roger Federer.

Tendu should issue a statement to all Sachinstas to calm their buttts down.

Most Sachinstas and they are unbelievable homers. To them world starts with Tendu and ends with Tendu.

I blame the Inidan media for making Tendu more than just a sports person.

Take that Sachinista's if you worship Sachin so much why can't you learn some humility from him.

^^ You missed the pun in the post. She infact recoganizes sachin, she said who sachin, not sachin who.

Btw god has already shown straight drive to millions of fans :sachin

with all due respect, its normal. There is nothing wise about it

Dammit Indian fans why did you have to mix drugs in her food :mc She genuinely doesnt know who he is

Sachin fans are so annoying. It's like they expect everyone to worship the ground their god walks on. I don't like Maria and I'm delighted that she got a ban but there is nothing wrong with her not knowing who Sachin is. Cricket really is a popular sport in very few countries of the world.

:))) go to her twitter, Indians are now apologising to her after the farmer tweet by tendu

Please tell us how many endorsement deals IK had and how much he made out of it?I am sure thats more than Sachin as you are claiming.

Tendulkar made it to Timez cover as a cricketer 2-3 times.IK only did it as a politician.

the funny thing reading back joshilla's posts is that he is making such post under a thread where a Tennis Icon is saying she doesn't know who Tendulkar is :)))

The whole argument of joshilla gets killed here yet he continued arguing :))) :)))

SRT is mainly known among the cricket faternity.

Rhianna is more famous world wide. Can I get a Bharat Ratna award - please? Lol!

" My point is, go to any country outside India and ask Who Sharapova or This cricket guy are, the majority will identify Sharapova and more than 90% will struggle to identify this Sanchin guy.. And Maria is not even anywhere near a Tennis icon. That should tell you where cricket ranks in terms if World Sports."
good comment

Don't know why I watch cricket feel like an idiot sometimes
I should just stick to better sports
Possibly identity crisis it certainly isn't the quality of the game...

Off topic

I thaught Maria would have a thick Russian accent but when I heard her talk she sounded like Becky from down the street :saslam

My brain felt a sudden electric shock...

I always thought that she would have a thick russian Boris accent too. Just listened to her interview and she doesn't seem so slavicly exotic anymore.

She moved to the US when she was 7.

Most likely because its the only sport Pakistan is good at. At least thats why i watch. And regardless of how bad Pakistan is now at cricket, since there are only like 8 countries that play Pakistan will always have a chance to win the World Cup.

Many years back i remember some sort of similar dialogue involving Ravi Shastri and Gabriela Sabatini
