Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai has urged all political stakeholders to pass a resolution to ensure supremacy of parliament, saying that some people want to make it ‘animals market’,

Speaking on the National Assembly (NA) floor, Achakzai said that Pakistan was passing through difficult times, underscoring the importance of ensuring supremacy of parliament.

“Today is the first day of the National Assembly, you all [PPP, PML-N and PTI] should now pass four resolutions that parliament will be the source of power for Pakistan’s internal and external affairs and no one else,” he said.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai further said that they will “salute” those who believes in the supremacy of the Constitution. “Those who embraced martyrdom in fight for democracy should be declared martyrs and judges who opposed martial law should be declared heroes,” he added.

“Believe it or not the PTI representatives have come to the parliament through the power of the people. Changing the public mandate is tantamount to treason,” he maintained.

Earlier in the day, PML-N’s Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was elected as the National Assembly speaker, while PPP’s Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah secured the slot of deputy speaker.

Sadiq became the 23rd speaker of the parliament’s lower house after he bagged 199 votes, defeating Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) candidate Malik Aamir Dogar, who bagged 91 votes. Later, Shah secured 197 votes and defeated Junaid Akbar, who bagged 92 votes.

Outgoing speaker Raja Parvez Ashraf administered the oath to Sadiq, while the newly-elected speaker administered the oath to Shah.

The NA session was convened today to elect the speaker and deputy speaker during which opposition lawmakers chanted slogans against alleged rigging in the Feb 8 polls.

Expressing apprehension about the state of democracy, Maulana Fazlur Rehman remarked, "Regrettably, I see this country heading towards the situation in Bengal; the Parliament is merely a symbolic institution, and democracy is losing its ground."

Challenging those who label their struggle against democracy, he asserted, "We are fighting against those who declare democracy as infidelity, but we are being cornered. If Parliament continues to be formed through rigging, it will lose its significance."

JUI-F chief emphasised their adherence to the concept of democracy defined by senior religious scholars and questioned the deviation from democratic norms.

"The Parliament is being brought into existence according to Western interests; do not expect anything from the rulers; they have buried their dignity before their demise," he remarked.

He questioned the credibility of America in advocating for human rights after its actions in Afghanistan and Palestine.

"Our manifesto states that we become the voice of the oppressed; I told Shehbaz Sharif, join the opposition, lest you become a target of our movement," he added.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday filed for an investigation into a notification of an “unknown” woman on the party’s reserved seat in the National Assembly by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The electoral authority issued the notification, bearing number F6 of 2024, for the success of the said unknown woman on the NA reserved seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Reacting to this, Fazl submitted a request seeking the suspension of the notification and investigation into the matter.

“Sadaf Sultan is neither our party (JUI-F) member nor named in our list. Notification for Sadaf Ehsan should be suspended and Ms Hina Bibi should be notified [on the reserved seat],” Fazl’s request stated.

He also raised a question of whether the notification for Sadaf was issued by mistake or there was a conspiracy behind the matter.

The ECP last week allocated reserved seats in the NA and all four provincial assemblies.

It may be noted that the reserved seats were distributed among other parties as the electoral watchdog ruled against allocating them to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

According to an ECP notification, eight women reserved seats in NA from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are given to PML-N’s Sobia Shahid, Ghazala Anjum, Shela Bano and Shaheen while PPP’s Asma Alamgir and Naeema Kanwal and Naeema Kishwar and Sadaf Ehsan of JUI-F.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has been urged to postpone tomorrow’s public gathering in Quetta, amid a ‘threat alert’ issued by the law enforcement agencies.

JUI-F is all set to flex its political muscles in Quetta on April 20 (tomorrow). The public gathering would be attended by the JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Unidentified terrorists want to target the JUI-F public gathering, the DC said in an official handout, adding that JUI-F provincial chief Maulana Abdul Wasay is also informed about the threat alert.

In the official handout, the district government maintained that the recent wave of terrorism could not be ruled out. The deputy commissioner recalled the Pishin blast on February 7, a day before elections, that killed 17 people and the martyrdom of a Levies personnel last month. It was also a terrorist attack.

“It is requested to kindly postpone the public gathering/jalsa at Pishin district on April 20 keeping in view the threat alerts,” it added.

Last year, at least 42 were killed and more than 111 injured in a bomb blast that took place in Khar tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district during the Workers’ Convention of JUI-F.

Three Pakistan Army helicopters took part in the rescue mission and 10 critically wounded persons were shifted to Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital.

Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed claimed there is no doubt that former Army Chief General (retd) Qamar Bajwa was ‘behind’ the toppling of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.

In an exclusive interview with ARY News, the senior politician said that he knew that the Imran Khan-led PTI government was bound to be toppled. “The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan had informed (to vote against Imran Khan in the no-confidence motion) me,” Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed added.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that the party's Majlis-e-Shura — top decision-making body — has decided against becoming part of any alliance for now, while expressing "serious reservations" over the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) amid reports that the two parties were on a verge of joining hands against the coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Fazl's party has been holding meetings with the former ruling party after they both termed the February 8 elections "rigged" and also voiced shared concerns about the federal government's policies on the economy and the menace of terrorism in the country.

The Imran Khan-founded party and JUI-F have jointly opposed the Centre's newly-announced anti-militancy operation, Azm-e-Istehkam, raising concerns that parliament was not taken into confidence on the matter.

In a meeting with senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser last week, Fazl agreed that the military operation was not the solution to the problems.

They also agreed on fulfilling the role of opposition in the National Assembly together, and also constituting a political committee to address various issues between them and formulate a political strategy.

The PTI or any leader did not address or comment on the claim on social media as of Saturday night.

He also reported progress in contacts with the PTI and said his party formed a committee for formal negotiations to bury the hatchet.

“PTI and JUI had a bitter past and normalisation is a priority for future cooperation. This will lay the foundation for moving ahead,” he said.

He detailed that senior leader Kamran Murtaza would lead the committee while other members would be Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Fazal Ghafoor, Maulana Amjad and Fazal Ghafoor.

Fazl blasted the government for keeping PTI founder Imran Khan and other party leaders in prison.

He also reiterated his opposition to Operation Azm-i-Istehkam and claimed the people did not support it as they had suffered a lot due to previous military operations.

“People will not leave their houses again as they had to flee Swat and tribal areas due to operations and would live in camps,” he recalled.

Fazl called on the establishment to review its policies, saying the country could not continue to run if the current situation prevailed.

“They (the establishment) have no capability to deal with political matters. They want to make the Parliament and civil institutions as slaves and elected representatives as their servants,” he said.

“If you want to impose an emergency, launch parties of your own choice and make the Parliament subservient, we will not allow this,” he asserted.

Addressing the establishment, Fazl said: “You are creating a situation like Bangladesh in two provinces (KP and Balochistan) to separate from the country. The situation is now out of your hands and control. Martial law and emergency will not work now.”

PTI seeks JUI-F support in anti-government campaign

The PTI has sought in-house cooperation from JUI-F, stating that the two sides can make things difficult for the government if they work together in Parliament.

According to sources, a PTI delegation met with a JUI-F delegation in Islamabad on Friday.

The discussions also touched upon past meetings between the two parties. Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that the JUI-F can respond to PTI’s proposals after consultations.

Sources added that both parties proposed forming committees to enhance further cooperation between them, and also discussed efforts to bridge the gaps between the two parties.

The PTI delegation included PTI Chairman Gohar Ali, Asad Qaiser, Shbaz Faraz, and Rauf Hasan. The JUI-F delegation included Secretary General Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Aslam Ghauri, and Maulana Amjad Khan. Kamran Murtaza also participated via video link from Quetta.

JUI-F spokesperson Aslamm Ghauri stated that the meeting was an introductory one, which took place in a “pleasant atmosphere.” The opposition alliance in Parliament will be strengthened, he added.

Ghauri clarified that the perception about the alliance was not “entirely accurate, as the two parties are not part of a grand alliance.” He emphasized that both JUI-F and PTI are opposition parties in Parliament and they would also work on the “issue of the PM’s powers.”

PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan said that it was the first meeting of the committees and they agreed to continue the dialogue. He mentioned that they also discussed cooperation on “important legislative matters” in Parliament. Hasan expressed the belief that “with determination, one can achieve anything.”

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday held a joint meeting for cooperation on the parliamentary forum.

Committees of both the parties decided to join hands in the parliament on public issues and legislation.

It was also decided to take a unanimous stand on the legislation in the Senate meeting.

Sources said that Barrister Gohar, Shibli Faraz, Asad Qaiser, Kamran Murtaza, and Ghafoor Haidari participated in the meeting.
