India looking to continue momentum against injury-hit South Africa

South Africa will be without their captain Faf du Plessis as they attempt to level the series in Centurion.

Overview

South Africa v India

SuperSport Park, Centurion

2nd ODI

Sunday, 4 February 10:00 local time; 8:00 GMT

India's resounding win over South Africa in Durban not only put the tourists 1-0 up in the six-match ODI series, it sent a big message. South Africa, ranked number one in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, were unbeaten in 17 ODIs at home before a Virat Kohli-inspired India arrived to beat them by six wickets at Kingsmead.

Aside from home captain Faf du Plessis' wonderful 120, South Africa were out-played in every department. Despite their relative international inexperience, India's wrist-spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, were superb, taking five wickets between them to gut the opposition batting line-up. Their efforts ensured the batsmen were left with a score of 269/8, which they chased comfortably.

Kohli then put on the kind of masterclass we are getting used to, pacing his innings of 112 to perfection and putting on 189 with Ajinkya Rahane (79). The Indian skipper's 33rd ODI century – and his 20th when chasing – was absolutely dominant. In many ways it was a perfect series-opener: India have thrown down the gauntlet; it is now up to South Africa to respond.

The hosts will have to respond without captain du Plessis, who has been ruled out of the remaining ODIs and following T20I series with a fractured finger sustained in the field at Kingsmead. The 33-year-old will need three-to-six weeks to recover, meaning he is also a doubt for the four-Test series against Australia that starts on 1 March. With du Plessis and AB de Villiers sidelined, South Africa have called up batsman Farhaan Behardien and wicket-keeper Heinrich Klaasen as cover. At the time of writing the Proteas were yet to announce who would captain the side in du Plessis' absence.

If India can win the series by a 4-2 scoreline or better they will claim the much-coveted top spot in the ODI team rankings. South Africa need a drawn series or better to retain their place. It's game on in Centurion.

Key players

Kagiso Rabada (South Africa): In the first ODI, Rabada bowled with excellent pace, regularly clocking around 150kph. However, he claimed figures of 0/48 from his 9.3 overs, with Kohli in particular playing him well. Rabada is an outstanding talent, ranked as the sixth-best ODI bowler in the MRF Tyres ICC Rankings, and his side will be hoping for a destructive spell at Centurion, where he should find a pitch with pace and bounce. While it was largely the batsmen who were at fault in Durban, it is Rabada who could hold the key to neutralising the threat of India's batting.

Kagiso Rabada has taken 77 wickets in 44 ODIs at an average of 26.77 Kagiso Rabada has taken 77 wickets in 44 ODIs at an average of 26.77
Virat Kohli (India): As much as you may want to highlight other players, India's captain makes it difficult to overlook him. His performance in the first ODI was as spectacular as it was inevitable. Kohli is simply awe-inspiring with a target to chase down: he has now scored 18 of his 33rd ODI hundreds when batting second to secure wins for his side, at an average of 94.04. His competitiveness, leadership, match-awareness and shot selection make him a game-changer. If South Africa can dismiss him early, they stand a much better chance of winning.

Conditions

South Africa enjoyed themselves last time out at Centurion in an ODI. The Proteas racked up 384/6 batting first against Sri Lanka, with openers Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla both scoring centuries in an opening stand of 187. Both players have particularly good records at the ground: de Kock averages 90.33 with four hundreds in six innings while Amla has scored 846 ODI runs at an average of 76.90 with five hundreds in 12 knocks. South Africa have won 24 of their 36 matches there.

Weather-wise, the match could be in for some interruptions with potential for thunderstorms in the afternoon and 27-degrees forecast.

Hashim Amla (154) and Quinton de Kock (109) put on 187 for the first wicket in South Africa's last ODI at SuperSport Park Hashim Amla (154) and Quinton de Kock (109) put on 187 for the first wicket in South Africa's last ODI at SuperSport Park

Faf Du Plessis and AB Devilliers, both injured their fingers while trying to catch Virat Kohli in the slips :O

This doesn't even make sense. Anyone can get injured catching for tail or batsman's catch.

Zondo is another quota player lol

His overall stats are abysmal then I looked at his recent form to see if he justifies his place. He averages 39 with a SR OF 65 in the current List A tournament.

I don't see how this system is working

2-0 on cards

Not seeing SA defending a total against kohli and co with 2-3 quality bolwers

If de kock fail again this too will be a yawn fest like the first odi

The quota system works. In 20 years they have gone from zero coloured players to half the team. Occasionally there is a player you could question like Bavuma or Zondo but most are there on merit. People forget the champion Ntini was absolutely "just" a quota player for the first few years of his career but is incredible progress & career are the ultimate proof that the quota system has worked and should continue for one more generation- you can't erase centuries of disadvantage in one generation.

India win toss and bowl...

Kohli wants to chase... Poor Rohit.. No double 100 :babar

Have a qouta system but less number of colored and black players required in the playing 11. 6 is a lot imo

South Africa without their 4 key players will be white-washed left right and center.

Pitch doesnt look like a belter.. There is some dangerous bounce, Or QDK is woefully out of touch and is making Bumrah look like Holding.

I think Amla should consider his retirement seriously. He is becoming a burden of the team

How many quality bowlers do u need? Lol. U r lucky to have 3 world class bowers in ur team. Most teams don't have a single one.

That's another bad shot from decock in this series. And here starts tail of south africa.

We should have played Kuldeep and Chahal in the Tests!

SA's plan to stop virat kohli scoring another century is working great.

Miller gone! Shows the importance of AB and Faf in the side.

What an immature captain!!!! Lack of batting and leadership quality

Its a decent track. SA just do not have the batsmen to play spin. This is Indias chance to win 6-0

LOL! It's funny!! mera bharat mahaan going to win the series it seems

The Miller ball was well bowled but that was clearly the dismissal of a person who cannot play spin.

Zondo walks in to tame the rampant Indian spinners

South Africa should make either flat roads or go for green tops. Not sure these kind of pitches are going to help them win any thing.

We would beat them on flat tracks and green tops won't help them get ready for the WC.

Poor captaincy from kohli as usual. No so sure why has he brought back his buddy Hardik to bowl again. Hardik is a rubbish bowler.

kohli bowling pandya to make sure he can score century while chasing.

Pandya is one of the most gifted bowlers India has found in recent times.

He gifts runs to the opposition whenever he comes onto bowl and releases pressure. 2.4-0-23-0

Never do you ever!

Hardik has been unlucky with all the edges flying in no man zone. On another day he would be having 2 wickets by now bowling the same line and length.

I have never seen such a fake bowler than Pandya. He regularly goes for 8.5-9 RPO against the top order batsmen and then comes back when the team is 4-5 down to end up with an overall RPO of 5.5-6.

Problem is we don't have alternative to pandya.

you don't need allrounders to be great team. I will still play proper 5 bowlers instead of bits and pieces player like pandya. (cause in odis any one bowler can have off day + pandya = we left with only 3 bowlers)

How sad that trying to win ranks below make pandya look like a bowler.

Pathetic

Someone will have to play the game of his life to save this. Frankly, it looks like this series will go to India.

Oh look what happens when you let actual bowlers bowl, who could have seen this coming.

Kholi is disgrace as a captain. We should hand LO captainship to Sharmaji ka beta and test to Rahane.

Ind is doing well again ....Some folks here crying about Pandya bowling. Ind Mgmt is thinking long term for WC'19 making him get more exposure ...Will it work or not different story ...But good thought by Team India.

Agreed. I dont mind Pandya bowling, and India losing a couple of Jamodi, as long as it helps him develop as a bowler in the long run.

Also, today a lot of the runs off pandya were edges and quite streaky.

Two days and two poor matches of cricket....

Kuldeep and Chahal neck and neck with 3 each. With 3 wickets to go, who will win the battle of the spin twins? :42:

This. The obsession with all-rounders is beyond my comprehension. You only play all-rounders if they are quality not bits and pieces hacks :afridi

Jadhav us just rubbish all-round. Makes our batting weak and bowling is nothing special either.
