After a 2-1 victory in the ODIs, India have set their eyes on victory in the T20I leg against Sri Lanka, a series in which both sides will have an eye on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE and Oman.

Overview

Sri Lanka vs India, first T20I
R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
25 July, 20:00 Local

Despite a defeat in the final ODI against Sri Lanka, India’s confidence to out-perform Sri Lanka in the T20Is would not have been dented after the visitors fought back from a difficult position to ensure Sri Lanka had to fight for their three-wicket victory.

For Sri Lanka, Avishka Fernando and Charith Asalanka found form with the bat while the bowlers put up an improved display consistently in the final two ODIs. The spinners, Wanindu Hasaranga and Akila Dananjaya in particular, made the Indian batters struggle in Colombo, and they'll be looking to take that form into the shortest format.

Remember the last time

The last time these sides locked horns in the shortest format was in January 2020, when Sri Lanka toured India. The hosts dominated the Lankans in all facets of the game at the time. India posted a daunting 201, thanks to fifties from the openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan.

The Indian bowling line-up then bundled out Sri Lanka for 123 in the 16th over, with only Dhananjaya de Silva mustering any resistance with his 36-ball 57. Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar returned two wickets apiece while Navdeep Saini snared three.

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): “The bowlers showed maturity, that's what I expect from the youngsters. I hope they will continue this in future tours as well. When you play international cricket for long, the guys will improve and play consistently.”

Suryakumar Yadav (Indian player): “Prithvi Shaw is a show-stopper. He is batting brilliantly and he is working hard on his fitness. It is really good to see him doing so well. We are really looking forward to seeing him in the T20s.”

Squads:

Sri Lanka Squad: Avishka Fernando, Minod Bhanuka(w), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Ishan Jayaratne , Ramesh Mendis, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando, Lakshan Sandakan, Ashen Bandara, Praveen Jayawickrama, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Pathum Nissanka, Lahiru Udara, Shiran Fernando, Binura Fernando

Ishan Kishan, Deepak Chahar, Krunal Pandya and Bhuvaneswar Kumar should make a comeback.

India should win this easily. :inti
Bhai- what makes u think that? foramt is T20 and its pretty even in my book
this format can make a mockery of most teams
Look at quality of Afg's spin attack - now here you have a fantastic contender who is going to give a lot of teams headaches in the T20 WC
The way i see this is India should try out all guys and give chances to the whole squad...
Hope namma paiyyaan Devdutt get a gig, excited to see him and Varun Chak - if they get a chance

Padikkal has to be played in all 3 games.

It was a big mistake on part of Dravid & Gabbar to not play him in ODIs. He was in blazing form in List A games. Would've been interesting to see how he'd have done at the international level.

As per CI, this will be the team that'll be played in this game.

India (probable): 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 3 Ishan Kishan (wk), 4 Sanju Samson, 5 Suryakumar Yadav, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya/K Gowtham, 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal/Rahul Chahar

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to field

Yuzi Chahal is a comedian. What is he doing in the T20 side?

Good to see Varun playing.....however we've lost the toss again....
when his turn comes to bowl, will be bowling under lights with the dew coming in, not the greatest of circumstances, but if he fires, would be exciting

This XI shows how much overrated the role of a coach is.

Krunal is playing too! Well done Gabbar & Dravid.

Padikkal and R.Chahar should have played. Poor team selection

And this is the Shaw we're sending to England as a backup opener for Tests. :)))

The Shaw-stopper struggles vs swinging delivery of Chameera and gets out in the first ball of his T20 debut.

How is this guy gonna survive in England conditions?

He is a poor man's Rishabh Pant :inti

Great to see Shaw being exposed for what he actually is. It's the cluelessness of the highest order of our 'think' tank to call him to England as a test opener.

This Chahal guy is a very good comedian. He should apply for stand-up comedian role instead of cricket. He will do better there.

Very interesting from selection from lanka. Dropping Rajapakasha who is the best striker of the ball
also I don't get it why hasaranga who is better player of Spin bats so deep at 7

Good to see cricket being played on with rain. In Eng they stop the match even if there is a mild drizzle.

OUT

Big wicket for lanka here , Surya would have made a difference in last few overs

Need a Pandya special now....c'mmon champ show it how its done.

Do you all agree if I say that that the upcoming generation of Indian LOI batsmen aren't that impressive?

Other then SKY, they all seem pretty below average - Samson, Pandey, Shaw... Cant rely on any of them to save a match in a crisis situation.

Shreyas Iyer is somewhat OK. He did reasonably well against NZ in NZ, but even he isn't that 'impact' batsman India needs, who can replace Virat Kohli in a few years.

Things will only get worse due to covid and no domestic cricket.

Shreyas has been exposed quite a few times already. He is pedestrian against pace.

Anything less than 170 and it's a below par score.

He didn't do too badly in NZ. Scored a 100 and two 50s in three games.

Did ok in WI before that too.

He's better than the others we have.

Sri Lankan bowlers bowling impressive line
Pandya struggling big time.. concern for India

My memories of him stem from our series down under lasy year. He was all at sea from as far as I remember.

Credit to Sri Lanka...they have up their Game with every match...Bowled brilliantly so far

Poor from Ishan Kishan. Last 2 balls would have been sure shot wides had he not forced himself to hit them.

Ishan Kishan is better and more versatile than Sanju Samson as he can bat at different positions. Samson is just a top order specialist.

2/43 in last 5 overs. We'd be lucky to be in last 4 in T20 WC with such hitting capabilities.

Pandya has been pathetic this whole tour. Was also pathetic against England with the bat.

Worrying signs for the T20 wc as he's pretty much the only "power hitter" in this lineup.

So there's going to be dew tonight. Another excuse for a pathetic performance from our bowlers as well.

Hardik's bowling has regressed so much that it is now at Bopara and Styris level.
