This middle order is brittle and 1 or 2 good innings might get him a world cup seat, rather he go through the grind and then get there rather than get there pre maturely and fail as that would be disastrous to the team in long run, not to mention he would be still playing for Ind A, no one better than dravid to keep him improving and grounded and far away from the nonsense of shastri and co.
 
unless there is dew that helps the ball skid on later, this ain't looking like a good decision to bat second.
 
There is not enough time left in WC 2019 to nourish Gill in the odi side. He should be getting a call after WC 2019 so that he establishes himself as one of their main player till 2023 WC.

It's too early for Gill. Let him shin at least in IPL or some domestic games before fast tracking him in the Senior side.
 
On such a true wicket batting falls apart. Wild swings, swishes. No focus on timing, placement.

When seniors bat like under 15 player we have to stop calling them seniors. I bet none of these middle order batsmen bar Kohli show as much maturity as Gill shows.

He is not just random 19 player. He is extermely special by all accounts. These first class cricket produces average cricketers like Pandey, Jadhav. They pile up runs against useless bowlers and come in. Look at Jadeja, Ashwin. Jadeja has far superior first class record with bat. Who has better record in Tests. Ashwin by a distance. This guy is just ready. Many guys havre made debut at the age of 19 for India.

We have players like pandey and rahul who should be given the 4 and 5 position but alas kohli and his lackey don't like them much.

Yuvraj Singh, came in 1 month before he turned 19, and made his first class debut at 17. He had spent a full season playing domestic cricket (including first class and list A) before being called into the Indian side.

On a serious note, South Africa exceeded the maximum quota of white players in the Test series v India.

But the quota is measured over a twelve month period, and it was always obvious that less important matches would be used to balance the numbers.

Hence four black players today, of which at least one is of questionable quality.

Hence also JP Duminy having played so many ODIs.

Selecting South African sides is always a complex balancing act, with a clear imperative to adhere to racial quotas over a twelve month span. And the selectors appear to be using the India ODIs as a means of cancelling out their quota breaches in the preceding - and much more important - Test series.

It will take some time for Gill to establish himself. Remember Kohli in WC 2011. He couldn't do much even after debuting in 2008.

However, I am unsure of going with Rahane at 4 no matter how many 50s he scores. Same for Karthik. But you cant replace them with Gill before WC 2019.

He played two first class game. Already got a 100. He averages like 100 in under 19 cricket somethig unheard of.
 
Rahul is the one who could replace them but captain is captain..

Jadeja has a fantastic record because he is a better batsman than ashwin, but sadly jadeja seems to have given up on batting and tries to be a swashbuckler rather than a batsman and his huge average is mostly down to saurashtra pitch and its tendency to be flat rather than the bowling.

If they re going to build a side for WC2019 this is the best time to include him. Pandey, Karthik, Rahane, Jadhav all useless. This kid got such an all round game. He can rotate strike, he can play big shots without slogging, He can place the ball, He runs well between the wickets. He is good against short ball, he is good against spin.

Jadeja is such a pathetic batsman against quality bowling. He didn't give u panything. HE is just crap. That's it.
 
The run machine is in his 90's. I just wonder...If he has Rohit's 6th gear to get to 200...

You haven't watched him bat my friend, he is a good batsman. Not your great batsman level player but a sort of better version of someone like rabada in last series but sadly he has embraced the whole sword thing and hitting stupidly rather than playing as he did for saurashtra.
 
Mahendra ‘Geoffery Boycott’ Dhoni is displaying excellent defensive technique is this ‘test’ match.

People judging the utility of Rohit and Pandya in ODI's have no clue. You need Rohit who is a match winner. Just because he flopped in 3 straight games doesnot mean anything. He will come good again. He blows hot and cold every now and then for no apparent reason. With Rohit, when he rains, he pours.

You need a player like Pandya down the order to hit big shots. Indian team has no fire power after Top 3. He may have flopped in this SA series. But he will come good again. Fans need to have patience.
 
MSD is batting on a difficult pitch, while Virat is playing on a flat pitch.. This is not fair! :bhatti
 
Dhoni should have gracefully retired like an year back. He is not even 30% of the real Dhoni. He hurts India two ways. He hurts present matches. He also doesn't allow another keeper to grow in his shade. Just in case Dhoni picks up an injury prior to 2019 world cup who will replace him?

I don't mind either but why on earth do we have pandya come ahead of the batsman with 20 overs to go, it was smart at times when we did it with dhoni in early part of his career he actually was a batsman but with pandya it is basically setting one self up for failure.
 
He's scored so many centuries that it's not even impressive at this point, great great player

Lol ... give credit where due, you don’t look to lose a series vs a major opponent and that too with the #1 ranking on line to prepare another one. Tough pill to swallow for you but SA have been outplayed thus far.

Scoring a 50 is hard enough. Scoring centuries even harder. Scoring centuries for fun is much much harder.
 
It was perfect platform for Dhoni to play his 'natural' game, and he never disappoints.
 
One wonders how many 100's Kohli will end up with come end of his career.
 
In hardmode i quiet often struggle to make 100 in some of my cricket games on Ipad. This guy makes them for fun in real life.

India are clearly looking a head and not at the present. MSD at Age 37/38 bats like a snail. You can only imagine him at Age 39 in 2019.

India are grooming Pandya to be the guy who can score 30-40 runs at 100 S/R at the minimum for WC 2019. Its a chance they have to take. Even if he fails for the next few games, its alright. At least you know what to expect of Pandya or they can try another player or some youngster.

Pandya is a utility player. He can bat, bowl and field brilliantly. He will contribute to the team in one way or the other. Today he only scored 14 runs. But he did not take 30 balls to do that. He was going at 100S/R which is not bad. He did not kill any momentum.

The bounce in SA pitches is something he is not used to. WC is in England and the pitches are super roads. Pandya will surely come good there.
 
I dont think South Africa can chase whatever score the Indians are gonna put up here.
 
Should be easy win for India. South Africa will not score over 150. Too much dependent on Faf, Steyn and AB. Wonder why they never won World Cup. Mentally weak team.

What you say makes sense if pandya could actually bat, if we gave this role to rahul or even jadhav it makes a lot of sense but pandya seems to have only one mode see ball swing bat, that is basically afridi level batting it will come off once in 50 games but the other 49 it will fail, if he actually shows improvement in his batting kudos to the management but given how he has played in each series not just this one i am not holding my breath.
 
This is why Pandya came ahead of MSD.

MSD kills the momentum and gets out like this. Not your ideal finisher/basher like he was until 2013.

MSD has been past his prime since 2014. 4 Years too much. But he is still the best WK in the country.

Dhoni was behind the success of Kohli's captaincy. Many times Kohli gets suggestion from him. An old Dhoni still far better than most of our batsmen.

Rahul cannot replace Pandya. Rahul is an opener or has to bat in Top 4. He is not a middle order player or a finisher. That is his problem.

Jadhav is useless. Below average batsman, a pie chucker with the ball and a pathetic fielder. I would play Raina a head of him.

MSD is in the side just to captain the side during difficult times while fielding. That is what I feel. Kohli trusts....

ANd Jadhav gives catching practise....lol
