Gill though? Probably will win the 2023 WC and 1-2 T20 world cups towards the second half of this decade. Part of a historic Test win in Australia on his debut. Will likely win many more fantastic games for his team in years to come.

Most of Babar’s best efforts will come in vain. Maybe like Tendulkar, who was unfruitful for large parts of his career though, bless him, Tendulkar got a fairytale ending to his hard work in 2011. Not everyone is lucky enough to get that.

Gill's debut and good performance, Rahane has two wins against Aus now one in India and one here, both very crucial.
 
Probably the hardest victory for the Indian team.

It's very hard to come back in Aus. They did it despite missing 3-4 main players.
 
This has to be the greatest comeback by any team against a top class team like Australia in their own den.
Having bundled out for a paltry 36, India was done and dusted for the rest of the series as Kohli went home on paternity leave, Shami sidelined and losing Yadav in the 2nd innings.

Rahane has taken greater responsibility as a captain and he is shining in that role.

This has to be the best Indian overseas victory ever considering the circumstances preceding the match.
 
Congratulations to India. Outplayed Aussies in all the departments. Jadeja, a lucky charm for India played a huge role by hitting 50 and then picking couple of important wickets.

Agarwal is not cut out to play express pace with his high back lift. He needs to change his stance to shine against super quicks like Starc and Cummins.

Yet SRT was rated as one the best 5 in history by the end of 2001. I don't think Babar will be rated for wins. He will be rated for making big runs against top-class bowling when the match is alive.
 
Considering the odds , this will go down as among India's best victory.

He used to adjust his lift back then. Then he became a successful t20 batter and his test batting is going KL Rahul way. He needs to rework his game again.

It is because of Pant we had to chase 70 though. His poor keeping made sure we don't win by an innings. Half asterisk on Indian team because we need to win another test to remove it and a full asterisk on Pant because I am still not sure about his wicketkeeping. :inti

I think Aus has not crossed 200 in 4 innings despite India missing their first-choice attack. I don't think an asterisk is needed anymore. They outplayed Aus in 3 out of 4 tests last time. Right now they are 1-1. No matter what happens next, huge credit for Indians to come back here.

Rankings are indeed very accurate. India in top 3, Pakistan in the bottom 3. India's performances in Australia over the last 20 years vis a vis Pakistan sums it up

I have to say more than Kohli we missed Ishant.. and a damn 3rd bowler that keeps getting injured.
 
One of our greatest ever overseas wins. To think it has come without Kohli, Ishant, Shami and Yadav (half the game). Also after what happened in the last test.

Well done guys.
 
It proves once more that our win in '18 was not a fluke.

Sachin couldn't win overseas tests (or even World Cup ODIs) for that matter mainly because he didn't had this kind of bowling lineup! (And started to achieve something after finding good partners like Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman, Sehwag, Yuvaraj, etc)
 
Another difference bw India and Pakistan is the selectors. Unlike Pakistan they do not tolerate mediocrity for long and if an Indian player regardless of his numerous past performances does not perform for a series or two, he is send packing and replaced by someone else and it is this sort of competition in the side that makes their players strive to be the best versions of themselves.

In contrast Pakistan has more or less been playing the same squad players for the past 10 years and hardly any coach, player is held responsible for the team consistently lying in the lower 3 rankings.

Yes an argument could be made that India can afford to be ruthless because of the abundance of talent, quality in their system and Pakistan cannot afford to be this ruthless because of the absence of quality in their system but some food for thought. We won the 2017 CT because of new blood and unless our players, coaches are not pressurized to get out of their comfort zones, our rankings will eternally stay in the bottom tier
 
More than Mayank, Pujara's lack of form is more of a concern. Especially the way he got out in the 2nd innings in this test.

Yeah, even the replacements for the injured bowlers are doing great. That's the greatest positive for our bowling.

Bumrah was nailing yorker after yorker. Aus batters were terrible. But Cummins and Green did well to keep those balls off their stumps

hmmm....long way to go....- needs to be of proven ability on bouncy andseamy wickets consistently, needs to have better footwork or at least a better leave- if he is to be an opener, needs to be tested in variety of match situations
Donot know how hot he is against quality spin, did'tn see him much againt lyon in this match, imagine facing Herath, lyon, tahir, etc on a turning wicket
possibly needs to work on his patience-and tendency to thrash every ball-I guess IPL has a lot to do with this....
Most importantly needs to be insulated from the over the top hype and hoopla that surrounds the circus that is indian cricket media and keep grounded and working hard.
Yes, potential is for all to see but he's surely not the next sachin...
 
Unbelievable comeback! Surely the second best win in our Test cricket history after Perth 2008. Arguably even better that too....

Happy for Siraj and Gill. Had absolutely brilliant debuts. And Rahane once again proving why Kohli doesn't deserve to captain us in any format.
 
Ravindra Jadeja is certainly good enough as a specialist batsman in Test cricket but it is his pure all-round skills that gives the Indian team much-needed balance in the traditional format, feels head coach Ravi Shastri. Jadeja's contribution in India's eight-wicket victory against Australia at the MCG on Tuesday can't be ignored as he scored an important half-century, picked three wickets and also took two catches in his 50th Test. Asked if India could look at Jadeja as a pure batsman, Shastri said: "He is a genuine all-rounder and that's why he bats where he is. He can bat at No.6 or even No.5, on given occasions but is a genuine all-rounder. That's why he lends a lot of balance to the side."

For someone who has 216 Test wickets apart from 1926 runs, Jadeja's restrictive left-arm spin and ability to quickly get through his overs gives respite to the team's fast bowlers.

"Also when we play overseas, there is a chance of one of the (fast) bowlers getting injured. You saw with Umesh (Yadav)," said Shastri, referring to the bowler, who is set to miss the next Test due to a calf muscle injury.

Australia have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee and penalised four ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the second Test that ended in Melbourne on Tuesday.

David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Tim Paine’s side was ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time. In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised two points for each over short. Consequently, four World Test Championship points have been deducted from Australia’s points total.

Paine pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Paul Wilson and fourth umpire Gerard Abood leveled the charge.

No they don't. 2018 India was in peak form when they toured Australia. Entire year revolved around team India strategizing and formulating a plan to win in Australia. Just trust me on this. I don't see Warner or Smith making any difference in 2018. That notion was put to bed. Just in peak conditioned and completely focused on creating history in 2018 when India toured down under.

Btw that wasn't even Indias full strength team.

Can't say as I agree. England beat Australia rather easily home and away in the middles eighties - when Alderman, Hogg, Rackemann, Hohns, Hughes, Yallop and Dyson were all banned. Alderman alone would have made a massive difference - and did, when he returned for the 1989 series which barring the rain would have been 0-6 Australia.

Yet the same team was marmalised 1-4 by a weak side in England, so I don't rate them.
 
A great display of batting and bowling from India, wonderful cricket.

A team that is on the up, and certainly looks like they have the foundation to become one of the greatest teams in the history of the sport.

They have almost everything perfect apart from a few injuries here and there.

They are the benchmark for a top side in modern cricket, and as neighbours, we should also appreciate what they have done to reach this position, the players they backed, and what they made from their resources.

There is a lot to learn for PCB from the methods of BCCI, and we have a blueprint in front of us about what is needed to succeed in foreign conditions like Australia.

Though I don't rule Australia out of the series yet, I still think that this Indian side is capable of toppling them over, and doing something remarkable.

Bhuvi din't play the whole series.

Mayank never played
Rohit din't play or Gill whatever you like from the two

Jaddu and Ashwin never played together

You never played or beat our best team. Besides we dint play any practice games before a major test series. We went straight from odi to tests.

I am 100© sure India can beat England in England if they play at full strength, provided they play some county practice games as well.

Mayank and Rohit were in form in 2018. Mayank din't play IPl. He modified his stance after 2018.
